  • This delicious sticky rice cake is filled with peppery mung beans and savory, tender pork. It's wrapped in banana leaves, which infuses a lot of its floral fragrance and smooth flavor into the sticky rice cake. It's eaten across many Asian countries, each having their own variation. This aromatic sticky rice cake is sold as a street snack, and often prepared on auspicious holidays and ceremonies, like Lunar New Year.
With holidays fast approaching, I wish you and your loved ones a safe and happy Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year!

Honestly it seems if someone makes it, it's a special occasion or gathering. I suppose khmer new year would be a holiday in April and in the US thanksgiving, Christmas & New Year we would hope somebody will make it too😅. This season I'm gonna try it!

Reminds me of pasteles, which are very popular among Puerto Ricans around Christmastime.

You may be surprised but this sticky rice cake with the exact same ingredients is eaten for special occasions (spring festival, dragon boat festival and winter solstice) all the way up to Guangxi China where I am from. :) There must be a connection there.

Thank you so much and especially for showing how to make the banana leaves more pliable by passing them over the flame. I'm going to try to make tamales this way:-) I have plenty of banana and leaves and no corn husks!

Hi Wayno, I used pork shoulder but pork belly would also be great. Any cut of fatty pork would do well.
