Take a trip with your favorite moto tech guru Todd, as he takes you on an in-depth look into how-to install a Dynatek 2000i Electronic Ignition system on a 2003 Harley-Davidson Sportster. You may recognize this motorcycle he is working on from another series we called "Saturday Sportster". With hopped up cams and larger pistons this 2000i ignition will give the motor some extra pep by adding to the tuning curve.
Todd walks you through from start to finish on this job. From learning all about what a VOES switch does, to removing the old ignition, to installing the new one and static timing. With just a few wires to hook up, Todd takes away all those wiring fears!
LET'S GO!

Best most informative video I have seen yet, you should teach.I really learned a lot from this and will be watching more of your stuff. Thanks
Thanks man. That helped me get my bike firing again. Love the depth and style of your explanations.
I like watching these vids because I can learn about my bike watching you tear into your demo bike, so if I ever have a problem I'll have the knowledge to fix it myself. I love wrenching (most of the time) and learning everything possible about the bike I love. Thanks Todd !!
We all got this now, thanks. Great tips and info! Happy Thanksgiving.
Awesome explanation. Hooked it up and fired it up 👍
I was hoping to see the timing light being used and his explanation for not having the plastic **chinga that threads into the timing hole🤣. I enjoy and learn from every one of Todd's videos🇨🇦
For the timing light, you put the plastic plug in to see the line more clearly also, if you don't want oil in your face and then you put the timing light on the spark plug wire start it up and at run at optimal rpm. you will then see the line hopefully in the center, as the timing light flashes. If its left or right of center you may have to adjust your sensor. Retarding or advancing the timing. Heres a vid on using timing light on a triumph starting at the time of using timing light. same concept different bike. th-cam.com/video/HdP__nnG1XA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=N9N50F_qOfC1L6WY&t=4181
@@lowbrowcustoms thank you so much, 78 Shovel Head that I want to check the timing on as its experiencing high oil temps.
awesome video!
After an hour or so of riding, my stock '03 Sportster starts running like garbage, not firing right under load. It runs great until it gets hot. New VOES, sealed all intake leaks, and re-jetted. Really runs great, until it gets hot, so I believe it is likely the ignition module or perhaps a coil. I want to replace the coil and ignition, and be done with it.
Thanks for the video, I’ve been wondering what to do while the roads are too slick to ride on for the next few months.
Question, for bikes tgat have the pickup and ICM behind side cover, is the installation process the same? …ish? Just unplug and remove the pickup then replace with the Dynatek piece?
Hoping to install on my 98 sportster 1200s! thanks for putting this video out, though I have to do more homework with the dual plug heads and no VIOS! Love the videos and Todd!
let me know how you planing to do it with the quad plug , still trying to figure out the best way to do it
@@faisalalzidjali5573 I believe the dual coils need to be used from dynatek but can’t seem to get consistent info. It’s falling to the bottom of the to-do list currently.
I have a 2000 1200s and already switched to the twin powers coil that’s 3.0 ohm. Also looking for the best way to set up this rev limiter 😪
Theres a few wiring diagrams on how to do this with dual plugs.. i got a 76 ironhead that i did it with..
Great job, thank you sir. I just ordered my cat's meow and will hopefully be puttering down the road in a few days.
You're the best Todd! I would take this project on with help from your video. Thanks for sharing man!
Does a 98 1200 have VOES?
Awesome video Todd / Lowbrow that was super informative and I will definitely be purchasing one of those for my 73 Ironhead at some point cos honestly who wants to mess with points anyway lol Btw , I hope I didn’t get your name wrong if I did I do apologize 🤦🏻♂️
Is there any specific reason why the two coil wires must run from the ignition sensor directly to the coil instead of simply running them to the existing deutsch connector thats already at the bottom of the bike?
18:10 before you send the wires through, if you wrap some electrical tape around the wires and the factory insulation it will help keep the insulation from bunching up like that. you can also tie a string over the insulation and wires, drop the string through and then pull the bundle of wires down out the other side.
Pulling a thin wire or string threw with the old one makes it easier to pull the new one back threw
Did one on my 2000 sporty. Super easy.
What dose the rev limiter sound like my stock 1200 sportster just losses power if I pull it all the way I want the gun fire rev limiter dose this one do that
@@gwizzfpv6741 it’s been so long I don’t remember. Sorry.
Please help. I did Evo1987 engine service, I replaced the camshaft with s&s 495v, I bought Dynatek 2000i and there was a problem with starting the engine. The motor is set as the manufacturer suggests. Tdc in the window is a line piston located at the very top. I set the ignition so that the LED signal goes out. When trying to turn on the engine, the LED shows the signal at the beginning and at the end of the start. I am asking for help. Best regards
Perfect instructions, thank you for that. When you do dynamic timing, do you ground voes and all switches on 2000i off, as manual says so, or you do it voes conected, switches on? Also whats confusing, do i search for advanced timing mark, or tdc mark?
I would suggest hitting up Helpdesk@lowbrowcustoms.com to see if they can help and or give them a call at 1800-935-5050
@@lowbrowcustoms im from Croatia, calling is not an easy option. But thanks anyway.
I like Dynatec. I have Dyna coils and electronic ignition on my 70's Honda CB750, but the green coil kinda screws up the color scheme on the Saturday Sportster. I'm kind of OCD about stuff like that.
we are gonna paint it. it was just to show that is what it looks like when you buy it. 😜 yeah not sure why they did green for that one... but a quick heat paint rattle black and easy fix.
Can I use the same module for sportster 2007 ?
Can I use the oem cup?
Another great video , thanks for posting . Just a quick one , is there any reason you couldn't simply fit Deutsch pins on the end of the new wires and re-use the original plug ?
Thanks
you would have to either splice on the old plugs which could be a little messy / un reliable or go to the dealership and get new pins. The other thing is to make sure the wires match in the deutsch connector.. Many ways to skin a cat we were just trying to show a way someone can do it in their garage with doing what most would have in their garage to do the job :)
Ok , that makes sense , many thanks !@@lowbrowcustoms
I have a 98 fat boy with an Evo motor it has a Dynatek 2000i Ignition the LED lights do not work, but still have fire going to the Plugs. I have a digital timing light and I'm trying to dynamic Check my timing but the timeing light will not work. Can you give me an idea what is wrong?
What do I replace the rivets i drill out with ? I have this ignition on the shelf gonna put it on this week.
You will need Harley part # 8699 special blind rivets those should be available at your local dealership
@toddmuller768 but it seems everyone uses screws not the rivets. I cant find this info anywhere on what to use, thanks in advance.
If you are going to reuse the stock cover then you will use the rivets . If you are going to replace that with one of the many aftermarket versions then you could use screws SKU: 005048@@ChadLand011
What happens to the other plug side?
👍👍👍👍👍
Hope thats not the final position for the coil pack. Unsightly!
Autolite 👍👍😁
will this ignition work for my '83 shovel kick only?
Need reprograming to fire on first revolution 😔, stick with points better for kickers imo.🤙
This Dyna S would probably be an easier solution for that bike: www.lowbrowcustoms.com/products/dynatek-dyna-s-ignition-complete-kit-dual-fire
thank you@@lowbrowcustoms
Anyone running it with there stock dual fire coil?? Wondering how it is
def run this with a 3 ohm coil.. if you hate the color, it can be painted.
😎👍😎
So if your just running a dual fire system, why wouldn't the Dyna S ignition be just as good for less money?
I was wondering this too but some years sportsters you need to get a mechanical advance aswell to go with the dyna s
@@crippledwizard666 Yes you need an advance unit, best way to get one is to buy a points conversion kit Drag part # DS-242299 Keep the other parts because if the Dyna quits, the points will get you home, takes about 40 minutes to swap it out on the side of the road.
ADvance unit from Drag is $62 bucks in Canada, probably 40 or less in US
putting an advance unit on a bike that has a cup would be going backwards one less part to fail
Why the heck is it green?
