    Very interesting. I don’t effort any pair of shoes more then 35 dollars. My kilometres are below 4 minutes. I was ashamed of myself not being able to effort anything more then 35 dollars. This video is a huge emotional support for the people like me. Yes, no question about the specialized shoes…. They are outstanding, that’s why people buy these but nothing wrong with cheap shoes as well. End of the day, it is our legs that generate energy.

      Well there's a huge difference between shoes that generate 0 energy, because they aren't responsive, and a shoe that actually helps you go forward. Believe me your legs will generate energy but they'll be more effective and they'll have more health in the end of the day 😉

    Alpha fly next % was meant for long distance runs at high cadence......they are responsible for Eliud Kipchoge breaking the sub 2 hr marathon time. Of coarse not everyone’s going to beat his time but we can always try! The 40 dollar pair is not bad either I have 40 dollar shoes that I use to simply change up my runs and not worry too much about my more expensive shoes and wear them down. 40 dollar shoe is a work horse .......usually when there’s new tech innovation the top shoes such as the alpha flys pave the way for less expensive shoes and get some tech incorporated in the less expensive shoe.
    Great vid!

  • @nickhyland9497
    @nickhyland9497 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Nice video, however I think a better comparison would be something like the cheaper Nike shoes vs the Nike Pegasus. The alphaflys and vaporflys aren’t really supposed to be used on your daily runs and are only supposed to be used for races time trails etc. They are not really a like for like use comparison. With the Pegasus you have a €120 daily trainer, which many will swear by for comfort, running feel etc. The question I think from a lot of people getting into running would be, “do I need to spend on a Pegasus or can I buy the cheaper alternative, and get good miles on them without risking injury to knees etc?”

    • @goranwinblad

      Thanks! Yeah you are right just thought it would be interesting to compare the most expensive ones to the cheapest ones but good suggestion for sure!

    • @virtual_self
      @virtual_self ปีที่แล้ว

      You're right. This is strange to say the least, its a cool video but its not accurate or logic to say the least.
      I ran with a pair of well used vomero 10 (never before used in running) a few years ago 2 times a week for 1 month (5 to 11kms per day) and I ended up injured and in need of treatment and spent a lot of money until I got fully recovered. Why? Because I used some cheap used shoes that messed up my chin and knees.
      They weren't responsive and they weren't cushioned like they should be, so now that I'm feeling like running again I'm spending money on a Novablast 2 o cumulus 23 that I'll purchase in Black Friday for 60 or 70€.

  • @rturrado
    @rturrado 3 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    Always a good time watching you, Göran! They talk wonders about how these expensive shoes help with recovering. Actually, probably one of the best points I've heard about them. I also understand that's a big point for elite runners, not so much for recreational runners. But it may be worth testing as well. E.g.: one week training with ones and the others and comparing perceived efforts and heart rates at the end of the week? Have a good day, thanks!

    Something nearly impossible to measure is how the shoe protects a runner from injury. That's probably more important than outright speed. Less injury = more training capacity = better results.
    I think the only way it could be measured is by having a mass poll of regular runners over time. Record shoe, injury type and frequency, training volume and intensity. Got to be a Phd paper in this.

    Hey Göran, thank you for the video.
    As I understand the advantage of more expensive shoes opens when you run long. Like marathons.
    If I calculated everything right, these 0.2sec per every 80m will be 2.5sec per 1km.
    And for a full marathon, it's going to be 2.5x42=105sec. Or 1min 45sec.
    So, it makes sense when you're on top of your shape and fight for every minute.
    And you're right. For an amateur (like me and 99% of the people here) having $300 shoes doesn't make sense at all.
    Thank you for sharing. :)

      Your calculation in terms of actual math is correct but you can't apply it here. Running math is complete different and varies from week to week, course to course. You also are neglecting to factor in distance, route(inclines etc) plus many more things. I have a pair of Vaporflys and while they were expensive the cost then becomes more than monetary value depending on your activity. Also say you buy these at 40 then you hate them and they are wrong for your foot, you are then limited to say trainers 60 and above - you've then spend £100.00, I paid 140.00 for my vapourfly new.

    I am on a budget so I cannot afford to buy the smartest and newest shoes. On the other hand I find that the cheap ones wear out really fast, so I tend to go for last years model of the better models, or older if I know and like a particular model. This way you never own the 'top of the pops' but you do save a lot of money and get to run in really good shoes too.

    Next time you do a comparison, please test the cheap shoes one day and the "super" ones the next day. While you have run in both at the same remarkable pace, you should consider that you were surely affected by the previous 6x1K (I'm talking about how much you've fatigued your legs muscles, nothing to do with the heart rate). I tested a lot of shoes at the running track, doing 5x1K and the difference between "normal shoes" and carbon plated with PEBAX foam is noticeable. i.e. the Saucony Ride 15 are 8 seconds slower than the Nike Vaporfly and 7 seconds slower than the Saucony Pro 2 on a 5K. Talking about the current shoes are now on the market, the Pro 3 are 17 seconds faster than the Pro 2, which means that the Pro 3 are 25 seconds faster than the Ride 15 on a 5K. This means, running 5 seconds per km faster, which is a big improvement in terms of performances. My 2 cents.

    One thing a short test can't quantify is how much the more expensive (better cushioned) shoe may prevent injuries to your calves, knees, shin splints, etc. That injury prevention and ability to train injury-free for the long-haul may be well worth the extra $250 for someone who would otherwise have months of downtime or very expensive surgury and/or physical therapy.

    very interesting. Somewhat surprising that the result was the same, but I must admit that I was also happy about it. If you had run continuously on a threshold over several km, the result would probably have been somewhat different.

    Pro golfer did a test w inexpensive vs very expensive clubs. Golfer concluded that the money you save and take golf lessons would be more efficient to lower your score. The equipment needs to be sufficient, but it's the proper training that makes improvement.

    Meanwhile seth de moore runs a whole 10k slightly faster than your 1k repeats and as a running beginner I probably can't do a single 1k at 3:20/km. You did 12 during a casual workout session. Fantastic job!
    This is just to put things into perspective :)

    • @goranwinblad
      @goranwinblad  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah I think I could do something like that or slightly slower on the 10k as well, it's quite common to train 1k repeats at your 10k race pace or slower if you are doing lactate threshold training. Yeah we all run on different speeds, but it doesn't mean we all can't enjoy running and have all the health benefits from it. Good luck with your running 😊

    • @stayontrack
      @stayontrack 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      he had average heart rate of 153 during his 1k repeats, obviously he can do faster than 3:20 on average for his 10k

    I have 28 pairs of running shoes. 🙂 They range in price from $65 to $165. My findings agree with yours. I also find to pay high prices for good shoes is not necessary. Especially for the carbon plated super shoes, leave them to elite runners, not for the rest us. We don't need them.

    I run half marathon in champion galactic shoes in 2.15min and recover fast after...so.... everything is possible 🤣 i run in them almost 1 year. Now I have nike pegasus... but for beginners its not about shoes... just start running. Later think about speed and faster shoes. Good luck🍀

    I chose the nike turbo 2s over the alphas because 1 they are cheaper I paid £160 at the time, and 2 are more durable so last a lot longer for day to day training.

    An FYI-
    That first pair of shoes you looked at buying were a pair of racing flats, they are significantly cheaper normally, because there’s almost no material that goes into them. It’s not really a running shoe. So I wouldn’t have bought them for this video anyways.

  • @petiefrankland
    @petiefrankland 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The testing was interesting but I would argue it was wrong, the alpha are made to run long distance, not fast, if the other shoes were much lower stack height they might actually have an advantage in small distances. The alphas are for maintaining a good pace for a long time while keeping your legs fresh, the other shoes anxiously do less. So you probably aren't testing the actual purpose of the alphas.

    • @goranwinblad
      @goranwinblad  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your feedback and yeah you are probably right but I still think it was interesting to test this since many people are racing in them for 5ks.

    I got that renew run for a total of 300 km. I don't really like it being heavy and stiff. It's also not that stable. But it's good for recreational runs so it's worth it. It still really depends on the kind of runner you are.

    • @jamestremblett1875
      @jamestremblett1875 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you look at it from $/km then 300 km from a $42 shoe is great. A well built $200+ shoe (like the Brooks Glycerins at exactly $200) will go about 800 km, which is $0.25/km. Whereas the Renew Runs getting 300 km from $42 is $0.14/km. The Alphafly's are good for 300 kms or less before the marshmallow zoomx in the heal loses its spring. So that's 300 km at $350 for $1.16/km.
      Yes you read that right. Alphafly's will cost you over $1 for every km you run in them, vs $0.14 for the Renews, that's 1/10th the price. Nike really wants even the most casual runners to buy a new pair of $350 shoes every couple of months.

    Well they do have one thing in common. They both DESTROY your feet/legs/back with their unnatural narrow toeboxes, arch support (arch weakening), elevated heel and extreme amounts of cushion. Meanwhile a simple pair of 100 euro Altra Escalante Racers will keep your feetl/legs/back healthy and are perfect for running.
