Holy crap… I haven’t seen a TH-cam video that ended in a failure in like a year now, crazy to see someone upload that. Was still incredibly entertaining to watch, amazing job with this!
This has been a well-known challenge here in Oslo, but not between these two stations! You start on the line from Sognsvann to Oslo, and run from Frøen (the last stop before Majorstuen) down to the big Majorstuen station: This is slightly downhill all the way with almost zero detours out from and into the stations. You have to be quick though because Frøen is going to be closed in a few years, replaced with the new Diakonhjemmet station a bit further up the line. It is also about 700m total distance.
I like how this video was edited; * short intro * informative build-up * close fail * enough time left on the video for anything to happen * very short outro This had me captivated without feeling like I needed to skip forward, and now I want to see if you make the run later on.
This particular challenge is definitely harder in Oslo than here in London. Mansion House and Cannon Street on the district and circle lines are extremely close, so you get more advantage from the acceleration and deceleration of the train (as well as shorter attempts, making it easier to reattempt if necessary). If you ever find yourself in London, and you really want to beat a train by running, that's probably your best option.
Seems like there is problem world wide with television companies telling the truth. Great effort and thank you for being truthful. This was very fun to watch.
Getting out of the first station was definitely hard, for this challenge it should help finding two stations that have short exit/entrance. Very good tries though!
This reminds me of the passage in Haruki Murakami's 'What I talk about when I talk about running'. He wants to run the original marathon route in Greece to write about it for a magazine (if I remember correctly) and they are very surprised that he actually means to do the whole thing. Apparently most of those challenges were faked back then too. Integrity is important, for the media, athletes and everyone else.
Great effort, guys! Regardless of the end results, this was one of the most "edge of my seat" videos I've watched on TH-cam. Fun idea, with great editing and pacing... I was entertained.
I do not mind public service television making entertainment (including sports or "culture", even if both ot those are also entertainment) especially in areas that are not likely to be covered by commercial television. And being (reasonably) advertisement free is definitely a bonus. However, I do expect integrity from them, and that faking is definitely a mark against NRK.
The 800m world record is 1:40.91. Comsidering this, I would have been really impressed if you manage this! The thing that was bad is that NRK didn't clarify it when first asked that this was for enterteinment purposes only and not actually accomplished. While it might have been a entertainment format, it can leave a bitter taste in regards to news. What is, in current times, very important. If people start saying: "national tv faked this, why should we trust their news on politics etc.?" their whole journalistic integrity is at play. I'm not Norwegian and therefor don't know alot. But I understand some Norwegian (easier written) and from those times i went on their website i had a good impression of them. A similar discussion as you hinted on is currently going on here in Switzerland. I think that the entertainment side and sports should have it's place on national tv. If this field is left out, you also don't get cultural things that make a nation/culture to people that might just earn enough to live and pay rent (also Norway has those). So you would push them out of anything besides news about war and politics.
From time to time I need to do this at the bus stop. In my village the stations are only a few hundred meters apart and when I miss it by a few seconds I can catch it because it can‘t drive very fast. It‘s always a fun thing to do but I could spare the sweat in the bus before university 😅 Maybe I‘ll try this in purpose one day.
I train intervals like this pretty often. I get on a tram and then push myself between stops that aren't too long or too short. It's the most fun type of training for me.
Nice attempts! Would be interesting to see if you could find a long distance version of this as well. I've been trying to find such a version in Stockholm. Apparently Alvik - Hagsätra takes 34 minutes station to station and is roughly 10 km on a path suggested by google maps. I'm not fast enough to be a serious contender, but would love to see an attempt.
I would recommend to try in Budapest, on line 4 between Új-buda központ and Moricz Zsigmond kör tér. The stations are so close the train is leaving one, when it is already entering the next.
I tried that in Frankfurt back in 2013, from Konstablerwache to Hauptwache - but was shy ~12 seconds, too many normal people in the pedestrian zone. 😂 suggest to mount the videos to a splitscreen, so you can see train moving and runner racing hard at the same time - no fake for sure! 😊
There is a similar challenge in Dresden as well: Tram 12 does a slight curve and you can run it directly. It should be possible for runners at around 3:30min/km (depending on tourists in town) :) I found this detour while running all tram lines here from endstop to endstop
Awesome video! Seems like a 800m/1500m specialist would have the right mix of speed/endurance to make the sub-2 minute all out effort required to cover the distance.
I have done a slightly different version of this without planning to that is a lot easier, but probably in the spirit of the challenge. I ran from Sognsvann to Kringsjå station. The reason it's different is because the metro stops at Sognsvann for almost 10 minutes, so if you get off the train immediately anyone can do it. What happened to me is that I usually get on at Sognsvann, and I was just too late to reach the metro before it closed its doors and started moving. Since I was in pretty good shape I tried sprinting to reach it on the Kringsjå station, which I just managed to do. So yea, that is a somewhat similar challenge with real world application. Try to catch the metro on Kringsjå after the doors close on you on Sognsvann. When I started running I was all the way beside the very back of the metro, and I could run a 1.55 800m at the time.
In Vienna might have a few good spots for you. U1 Praterstern to Nestroyplatz comes to mind, the Station Nestroyplatz has a very short exit, but the one on Praterstern might be too long.
Agreed, as far as I remember, there are some lines that use the same track, so that the subway 🚇 will not go at top speed. Same with Munich central lines. However, great idea of Goran to try bin real life.👍
Sooo close, maybe running it the other way is easier? Nationaltheateret to Stortinget? That way it is not so much uphill, I would love to see you try it again as an Oslo local
We had a cheese burger run at uni. The buss stops at both sides of a mall with a mcdonalds in the middle. So one person just bolts to the mcdonalds while the rest try to delay the bus to get some extra time. It's rare to succeed. There has been a few known successes though.
Living in Oslo, I think there are other combinations of stations, where this challenge might be possible (or even too easy). Ris -> Gaustad should be possible and Gulleråsen -> Slemdal or Frognerseteren->Midtstuen should both be rather easy. Might try one of them myself in the future. :D
You could likely make it by having a couple of late runners catching the underground at both stops. First person catches and hold for the second for five seconds or so. Now this can happen organically, but one would've thought it would have been a better method for NRK.
This looked a long way out of the station, i don't know the oslo metro but maybe if there are 2 sessions with easier exits. The others I have heard about are Cluny la Sorbonne to Odéon on the Paris metro and Mansion House to Cannon Street on the London Underground.
great video! Even though 60M is more my distance, I enjoy you content alot! Why not go the other way? From Nationalteateret to Stortingent - like in the NRK video? Then you get to go down the escalators, which should be alot quicker..
You should've tried it the same way they showed Amalie Iuel do it. Nasjonalteateret isn't as deep underground as stortinget so you don't spend as much time running up stairs and ramps. I suspect both of you would've gotten it running the other way around.
Holy crap… I haven’t seen a TH-cam video that ended in a failure in like a year now, crazy to see someone upload that. Was still incredibly entertaining to watch, amazing job with this!
Absolutely, I think it's a great display of Göran's integrity. Win or lose, it was pure adrenaline from start to finish!
nice spoiler dude,
Now that's how you make an interval workout more interesting!!😁
Haha Definitely! 😁

Frøen is on the Holmenkollen line, not Sognsvann.
Her is a video of the Majorstuen - Frøen run.

@@goranwinblad There's also a good spot on the M4 subway line in Budapest. Easily doable.
Yes! And it has also been faked by a prominent TH-cam channel
It’s going to be a Euro - tour apparently, .. then world evidently 😂

such a fun challenge, i was on the edge of my seat! 😅

Wow, that sucks that your national TV just went and faked that :( Kudos to you both for trying it though, congratulations to you both for these times!
Thanks 😊

What a great content! Im glad you guys are honest, even though you were unable to catch the train, you will have more loyal followers!!!🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤
I used miss my bus almost every morning and had to run to the next stop to catch the bus. This brings back memories.
Man, that was so much fun to watch haha, that music was also fantastic. That seems like a near-impossible task, but great tries!
2:11 Pace. Wow, just wow.
Wow!! That was a crazy competition 😲You guys had to run through the streets, traffic and people, multiple turns! You were both faster than the train👍
0:05 Than you need to run 24 kph for that distance. That is sub 2 min 800 speed.
This was epic - from the social commentary to the urban orienteering adventure. Stellar content.
