In becoming Magicians, we automatically assume a responsibility as representatives of how Magic is perceived. It’s up to us to champion and present Magic as a wonderful and beautiful Art. Magic is Dead, it is our responsibility to convince our audience to believe that it is alive, by any means necessary. Magicians, take responsibility, be amazing and prove to the world that Magic is an Art; alive and thriving.

I am 58 and I have never seen a Magician live it is on my bucket list to see close up magic! Even though I might have the knowledge of how the trick is done. A magician that is good at his or her art form would blow me away!!! I have always enjoyed magic whether it is a performance on TV or a tutorial it brings a joy to my heart!!!! If the Magician show a card trick for example before the tutorial I always watch it back because it amazes me. And I cannot perform most of the tricks due to severe arthritis. And it is a performance not just a trick.

Chris I completely agree with you! I was at my kids school a couple of weeks ago to pick up school supplies. There was this card magician there he had stopped us and was doing a couple of tricks for us. And note that I have been watching your channel for years and I have watched your tutorials on sleight of hand and everything so I thought I knew how he was manipulating the cards and I thought I knew how it was going to end and where everything was but I was so wrong. He amazed me and my son. Magic doesn't die because we know how a trick is done it lives because we are still able to be amazed even if we think we know how a trick is performed and we are still amazed when we're wrong.

From a former intermediate magician: One of my all time favorite performances was by Lennart Green on his TED Talk. The laser deal portion is among one of my favorites to watch. This DESPITE it being one of the easiest to understand simply because of his delivery and his fluidity. It's one of those examples I give as maybe something that isn't mechanically "hard" to understand the concept of, but to master and perform it in the way that Lennart does it takes long periods of practice and dedication. Also throughout the performance his sloppy on purpose lackadaisical approach while he knows exactly what's going on is perfect. I'd recommend watching the whole performance for anyone.

The more you know about something, the more you are able to appreciate it in its entirety. Fooling, like you said, isn't the main aspect of magic. Magic is an art form, and should be appreciated in the same way that all other art forms are appreciated. A professional singer would appreciate another professional singer's singing more than an average person would. Why? Because he knows the mechanics behind it. The effort put into it.The beauty of it. He can wholly appreciate the skill, and not just be 'wow-ed' as other members of the audience would. MAGIC SHOULD BE MADE AVAILABLE TO EVERYONE! THANK YOU CHRIS!

  • @claytonfricker6542

    Chris this is so inspiring!
I started watching your puzzle videos a couple years ago and then your magic shortly after.
I love puzzles but your magic led me to other channels, Daniel Madison, Spidey, All your Big Trick Energy pals, Cavann Booth, Owen Oscar and so many more. Then local magic shops and local magicians. I've been practicing and learning everyday since.
I also am a guitar player and can see an analogy where a guitarist practices the same riffs and parts of songs over and over again into a rut. It takes inspiration from a mentor, friend, colleague, family, spectator to evolve.
The more I learn about magic the more I know I would never know everything but could collaborate and create. I've started taking magic everywhere pubs, work, parties. People either want to be amazed or they want to learn how to amaze. BUT the Key thing is they always WANT magic. Social Media is a great platform for magicians to spread their craft!
In addition to catching your inspiration bug I think Im coming down with some rambling on!
Great Video and Keep the Flame Bro!

I love the analogy that "magic is at the knock knock joke phase"

    • @mcdermottpeter
      @mcdermottpeter 2 ปีที่แล้ว

It's not true though, is it? Is Derren Brown doing the magical equivalent of 'knock knock' jokes? How about Derek Delgaudio? I've seen live magicians perform just three times in my life. First time, I was five and I assisted the magician at a pantomime in his performance of The Misers Dream. Fooled the hell out of me, but I was five. Since then, I've seen Gerry Sadowitz and Guy Hollingsworth. both of them were absolutely outstanding performers. (Both at the Edinburgh Fringe -- one of the few places you can see state of the art live magic in the UK.) I'm not a performer, but I do read magic books and watch DVD's on history, method and theory. So I'm interested in magic.
Magic is like everything else. 98% of the people who do it are useless hacks. There are a tiny number of artists at any given moment taking the art form forward. Are there more of these today than there were in the past? I see no evidence for this assertion. Ramsay didn't provide us with any either. But as with any discipline, the very best in the field are standing on the shoulders of giants.

I remember when I 1st started watching magic videos that were teaching tricks and then started trying those tricks myself. My appreciation for magic grew immensely because I realized just how difficult magic really is. It takes hours and hours of practice to be able to perform a trick adequately. To be a true master really requires a dedication to the craft of magic and will take years of practice. Having this knowledge gave me a newfound respect for how much time and effort goes into actually performing that trick.

This was super interesting to think about. I've always thought that letting people in behind the curtain, about how we practice, how we think of new effects, the culture etc, would take away from the amazement and offer what could almost be called a pseudo-method. But you've made some really good points here. Going to have to mull this one over.

Chris, as a working magician I always tend to ask my spectators when or if they have ever seen magic in person before, and I have gotten the same amount of results when it comes to how many people have not. This of course excites me to be the first to show them some real close up magic, but it also reinforces that there will never be enough magicians in person to touch even a tidbit of our population. In times like these, where suspending disbelief can makes some one's day or even week, the more the merrier!! Online or not, people need magic in their lives so they can learn that nothing is impossible, and when you have something special you can do, you need to share it with the world, not keep it for yourself. That's what got me to change from a quite 12 year old with too many card tricks to even count, to go from showing only my family (who was bored of me performing by that point) to then go out and face my fears, and show some strangers some magic. Fast forward 20 years and you would never guess I was a quite person when I am performing. Both magicians and viewers can learn more about this important artform and I excited to see what is to come!! You have inspired me to post more online so I can reach more people and I can't thank you enough!!! Keep up the good work and when your in San Diego, CA ever, I have a place for you to stay any time. - @SkyKingMagic

That B-Roll of you with the green close up pad is something I'd love more of... just the same sort of background music, no patter over the top (though I do love magician patter!) just the movement of hands and the moments of gentle wonder.
I once wanted to be a magician, or so I thought, but I figured out I DON'T want to be a magician... when I don't know how it's done I can wonder at it, let the kid in me belive for a second then let age and experience join in and try and figure it out.

Hey Chris, I loved watching magic as a kid and performing for my family. I lost that in my teenage years. Just this past month I showed my own kids the David Blaine special where he performs Voyeur. I remember watching the special on television as a kid and how it was a pivotal moment in my love for illusion and misdirection. However, as a kid I was more in-touch with close-up magic. A few days ago I ordered a deck of cards and a close up pad with intentions to start putting some time into card magic. This middle aged guy is stoked to see what you're about to start putting out there for us all. Genuinely entertaining them and spreading joy. If after you’ve done an effect they ask how you did it then you failed. For performance, you need to be good enough that they don’t care how it was done… they are just happy they experienced it in the first place.”
    Jamie O’Hara.

The idea of not sharing how magic works reminds me of when companies try to copyright video game mechanics. It just ends up restricting creativity.

My first close-up magic experience (two weeks ago) lead me here. I didn't know any magic, I didn't know cardistry, I had never experienced it, but I was so amazed... and I told the magician I wanted to learn the trick. He didn't wanted to share the secret at first (he actually never did), but we started talking and he asked my why I wanted to know the secret. I told him I wanted to make people feel like I felt when he performed it. Now I'm here. I saw your videos on magic were around 2+ years ago, and two days ago I started to wonder if this was just all the content you would make about this (for me) new topic... and I was kind of devastated until I saw this video.
The feeling isn't dead, your words are true, and although I have no experience, and suck at every move, I hope I find the motivation just to keep on trying... to amaze people and spark the same joy I felt that first time I witnessed close-up magic.

Preach brother!!! 1. I had a routine that in the middle, I exposed a classic palm to the audience. The old men and purists thought it was a terrible thing. I told them that if this routine hurt their magic, then they needed to step up their game.

      2. Just because I know all the colors doesn’t make me appreciate VanGough less. If I have already seen all of the notes should I like music less? In Roger Klause’s book, he tells a story of fooling Dai Vernon with a thumb tip bill switch. I would like for the way you put together a routine and how well you execute it to make me astonished by the move that I already know.

If we don’t get out there and perform, how do the next generation of magicians get inspired. We are the intellectual great great…grandchildren of Thurston and Houdini. They inspired Bobo and Erdnase and Vernon … down to Ammar and Harris and Goldstein…. Down to, eventually, us. If we don’t pass it on, then we are the ones who killed it.

Lastly, you have 7 million audience members every time you open your mouth. Copperfield, Blackstone, Lance Burton, Mark Wilson never got those numbers. You are one of the most important voices in the art right now. It shows too. Look how many amazing friends you have. Remember you flash, you loose? The people showing up to that day were on TV winning AGT. Big trick Energy had how many PandT coolers working there? Your voice is the inspiration!!! You are the future of magic!!! You keep paying forward with all the positive energy that you give off to these young kids on your Reddit page, here, etc. and the next gen of magic will be assured.

I used to be really into magic a few years ago largely to you and your channel. Watching shows, learning techniquest, doing performances for friends, family and coworkers to the point to where it became my thing. Its been a few years now where I stopped doing it because I didn't want to define me and I felt it was becoming normalized and not amazing for others. This video helped me see that there is a lot more room for magic to grow and maybe even if I don't go as hard as I did before there is still room to bring novel experiences for people and give them a memorable moment that they will remember.

This is deeply profound, and I think it applies to any discipline and any elitism surrounding it.
I’m not a magician, I’ve never practiced magic but always appreciated it in a peripheral sort of way but your last video from the magic convention absolutely blew my mind, that sense of wonder and astonishment you talk about here is exactly what I felt watching the Spanish crew as absolute masters of their art. It was incredible, and all the more so because as well as being captivated and spellbound I knew I was watching absolute masters of their craft. You have a new subscriber here, and I’m really intrigued to follow you on this journey.

Hey Chris I have been following you for a few years and you are the reason I got in to cardistry and magic. I can 100% agree that me knowing some tricks and sleight of hand has made seeing close up magic MORE enjoyable. The fact that your bringing back the tutorials and tricks is probably the best thing I've heard in a while. I can learn more ways to make the look of shock an awe splash across my 4 year old sons face. Cause that is what magic means to me and Im sure alot of other people to. Keep it up man and Ill keep a look out for the next deck and your upcoming videos.

Thank you Chris! Being an audience of magic I appreciate people like you a lot. I try to do a lot of the tricks, I try practicing. Not very seriously therefore don't get good at it. But I am thankful to you for providing me the bare bones of magic, the basic structure. Now when I see magic I'm much more invested in the performance. I'm not trying to belittle the magician by thinking that, I know how it's done. But I'm trying to follow through a little bit. It has a weird sense of achievement but soon enough I'm lost again to the skills of the magician.
    So thank you!

It's been way more than 60 years since I last resorted to magical thinking. That hasn't diminished my enthusiasm for watching magic being performed in the least.
And knowing some of the basics through teachers such as yourself, Chris, helps me convince myself that "Yeah, yeah that's how the trick was done" even as I'm standing slack-jawed in amazement (and probably wrong, anyway).
I found this channel through the magic 'tutorials' a few years ago. The puzzles were a fantastic bonus. Very happy to have the content split this way.

When it comes to magic I frequently know the method but that has never taken away the genuine joy I get from watching it performed well. I'm not a magician I'm just curious so I tend to learn or discover how tricks are done. I always feel bad for magicians as I'm not overly vocal nor am I amazed by most tricks but I'm incredibly happy when I see a magic trick performed well. It is a skill and takes lots and lots of practice to excel at it. I get the same joy watching a skateboarder pulling off incredible tricks. Knowing doesn't detract from the joy of witnessing excellence in action.
Thanks again Chris. I really hope to visit CA at some point and will hopefully be lucky enough to see you perform some of your favorite tricks/slights/etc.

I've written something like this before - maybe even on a video by You.
The art of magic is the same as for any art form - entertaining and blowing minds.
I love books and the written word. I have dyslexia and still dreams of becoming an writer.
I have some education and understanding about how a GREAT painter paints a great painting - yet I don't come close to the same results.
I understand how to be good in sports yet I can't perform it myself and therefore/or still I can enjoy seeing other do it.
I love learning new stuff. My philosophical teacher once told me "when You've finished this class You'll have more questions then You had at the beginning" = knowledge is just a key to more rooms. Just because I get to know how ONE trick in magic actually works doesn't stop me from loving great magic tricks.
I'm a total novice in magic (except from being 39yo and having seen lot's of great magicians up close) still I love to understand some trick and Just be amazed by others.
Some tricks still looks and make me question "Isn't this REAL magic..." It's 2022 and people can still be that amazed.
This is a really great and necessary rant. Not just Your video but my thoughts as well. Rings in the water.
Love You Chris and Love magic and Love being alive and learning more and more. ...

I just started card magic, and the reason I started, Ill be honest, is because I craved attention. After doing it for a while, I realized, magic is much better done for people than for yourself. The people I practice on have a good grasp of how my tricks are done, and they help me improve, but when i perform magic at school, its just amazing, top notch reactions. You’re such a big inspiration to me, and I hope you keep doing magic on your channel, and that I can spread my magic and hopefully teach more people the tricks and form a club. I had no chopice but to stop the video at the 2:37 mark to write this. Thank you so very much for saying this. I've been saying the same thing along the same lines for years. When Shin Lim was on Penn & Teller's Fool Us and went super viral with that God Mode Routine I literally got back into magic that day. I've been watching magic for years. Was a magician for about a year at a magic shop and watched all the magic shown on Tv possible. I rented books from the library and boguth so much in the past. But, that performance by Shin Lim brought me back in. I had no fucking clue that magic was like that also. I thought it was mainly just all this prop stuff and some sleight of hand moves regurgitated year after year. But, no. There was so much sleight of hand that was so advanced that many magicians never got into the moves. They stopped at double lifts and simple card manipulations. Now that I've learned from the greats of today, Chris Ramsay, Alex Pandrea, Daniel Madison, etc...I could write names for 20 more minutes but, we all get the drift here. Now I'm still no magician and mainly still consider myself a Sleight-of-Hand Enthuisiasts theres still much to say and see in magic. Magic is big time in it's infancy and I think in the near future some technologies will come out that willmake magicians perform actual magic in front of our eyes. Just imagine the use of super detailed holograms. Or magic beign done in the Metaverse. Okay I want to keep writing about this becuae there is so many references to throw out here about why Magic is comign out of it's toddler stage but, I shall I end the reading on your eyes here. Now back to watching the rest of the video.

Teaching/Showing us a 'trick' or two (or even explaining) can only fuel the curiosity and love, it can't and won't kill the art. It's like anything, artist are taught in one way or form by lessons or natural talent, but it will not stop them from buying other peoples art but will likely create more artist to showcase their own. And that same theory works for almost anything, taught/shown something did not deter from seeking from a specific source but likely fueled their love to create something similar. Thank you for all you do, I have not seen up-close magic but I have the curiosity and amazement to continue to watch you and others perform!

You offer a unique perspective, one that I find myself using myself in my field of Data Analytics. There is a lot of logic in your words, but there is a lot of logic in presenting something, anything, while yet telling a story. I was introduced to Magic as a child, in High School I became a juggler, and College I dabbled in the more dangerous aspects of both. But professionally I am tasked with taking someone else's data, with a mission to weave both my learning and fact finding into a compelling story telling using data to teach my customer about their own data. And in essence set out to teach my customer more about what they are doing through insights translated in pictures, often even without words. There is certainly a trick, some misdirection (in the form of a usually nested complex analysis), followed by a reveal. I guess I should not be so humbled when my customers describe my offerings as magical. But it leaves me questioning, is it the trick, or is it the magician? Saying that, I also have to push back to other magicians (regardless of their field), Technology is wonderful, but how we choose to use technology is what makes us human. How can we use our skills to make our technology experiences better, i.e. more human.

I loved this video and the points you make. I'm a pro wrestling fan and I know what's going on in a "match" it has not lessened my enjoyment of what is happening, instead I can appreciate what is going on. I can see the difference between a good performer and a not so good one and knowing that either way I could not do what they are doing. I see that in magic. I am the rankest of rank amateurs and do some breath takingly simple tricks for my kids (thanks to you and others) but knowing what is going on does not take away from how amazing good magicians truly are. What you can do and how simple you make it look even though it is far from simple. You are ducks on the water and I feel inspired to learn more, try more and do more. Thank you for what you do and keep up the amazing work.

Cheers man im very excited for this new chapter in your channel and i got inspired to start sharing content more about methods and things like that in mine, im been restricted of doing it and now i realized that i doesn't make any sense. thanks man this was magic

It's fun to hear your vision of magic!
In fact, I was at a hotel in Quebec city this summer with my kids and friends and there was a magic show one night. After the show, my friend and I were having a chat on how kids were reacting and participating during the show. It blew our minds to see how kids today have no “belief” in magic, how they are watching the show by not accepting the fact that it just happens and how even before a trick they always try to catch how it’s performed and yelling it out loud.
I personally found the guy entertaining, he performed well, of course when you know what to look for you can catch stuff but it was also a basic show adapted for kids.
My 6yo boy after the show said something along the lines "I know how he did this trick, I saw it on TikTok and it's not magic he was hiding it..."
I explained to him that it's not important how the trick is made but if he saw it disappear when it was performed, he didn't, so I told him it was good, then the magicien did it perfectly!
I don't think magic is dead but as my friend and I were discussing after that show, when we were kids, life was so much easier because we were not exposed to so much information online or fake montages and how for them, everything in life is manipulated.
We were amazed that not it was not just our kids but most of the kids attending just don't have that “empty mind” of accepting to be fooled, accepting that Santa brings gifts at Christmas, and that is what I wonder how this will bring to art of magic in the years to come as those internet TikTok kids grow up...

After never owning a deck of cads in my life, I took up magic (card and coin sleight of hand) 18 months ago as a Hobby. The first year or so it was my own personal journey-- losing myself in all my magic books and coming up with routines to show my family every single night after work. Just over the past month I have started going to restaurants and bars and performing for fun for whoever will watch after I get off work. I had an interesting experience at a bar last night-- I was doing some coin and card magic for the bartender--. After I was done and leaving, a gentleman sitting a few seats down asked me to come over-- he had tears in his eyes-- told me his brother was a Pro Magician and had passed away a couple years ago-- and how wonderful it was to watch me do magic up close and brought back fond memories of his brother. Magic is very alive and I will be doing it as a hobby for the rest of my life.
