Being a food critic and being a chef are two entirely different jobs that require different skills. A food critic might not be able to work 10+ hours as a line cook working for minimum wage, but he does know what a good restaurant looks like. If a restaurant isn't working, it's the critics job to let people know. A good critic is the bridge between restaurant and customer. While they may be pretentious, lots of customers are as well, and part of being in the food service industry is being able to cope with that.
It's Pounds Sterling, so at the time this was filmed in 2005, that's about $26,000 per year. A fairly goodentry level wage for a teenager, or low skill worker.
For the people that dint know, this video is from 2005 but reuploaded on 2018. The 14k a year is in the value of pound not usd, back then this is consider a moderate amount.

Then he got grossed out at having to debone fish and remove their eyes and I was just done. His chef was right. He'd never get hired in any kitchen with that attitude and working at that pace.
they start at 8 AM and end at midnight? I did not know it was legal to work 16 houres a day. Actually, I highly doubt it. Where I live there's a law that there has to be a least 10 houres between shifts. (for non essential jobs)
Just because he’s a critic, doesn’t mean he should be able to cook. He’s good at judging, maybe not producing. Just like a car critic doesnt make his own cars...
I do understand that to criticize something you should normally first know how the something works, what makes it, and how difficult it is to make but I mean, if you as a person can eat food and you know what kind of food you like and then you go out to eat food, and you pay for said food, you're allowed to criticize it if there were parts you didn't enjoy, that doesn't mean you're right and that doesn't make the chef bad but you don't need to know how to cook to criticize food, I do find it important to know how someone made a dish but I don't see where the sentiment of "if you've never done this how can you criticize it" like I've never made a movie but I can say that the new Ice Age movies are bad. I could go more in depth but you know what I mean
He is like all critics they can’t do so they criticise those who can!,nothing but parasite voyeurs who ain’t got the balls to actually work in a kitchen
This would of aired between 2005-2010. I think minimum wage then was around 5GBP per hour in the UK, Today it's around 8GBP per hour. So if he says 14k per year then. today you'd be looking closer or if not more to 20k give or take. Isn't great but it's not bad for someone learning the trade. Within a year you would be looking to move up in the ladder and would be hoping for a raise. IF for some reason you don't move above that station due to what ever reason it's time to look else where for work to bring about that increase in wage.

I tried to follow one of the links at the end, but it said it wasnt available in my country. I don't understand why, since its not like a full show or anything. I assume its a mistake.
£14000 a year for that many hours? I got around the same as a starting engineer apprentice lol
That head chef is a complete ball buster haha respect
"I'm never eating in a restaurant again. I'll be a film critic."
Great, now someone can force him to make his own movie so he can see just how easy filmmaking is... Spoiler alert, it's no easier than being a chef. Or anyone with a creative profession, at that.
CatMaster90001 What is with this retarded assertion that you have to be as good as whom ever you critique? You don't need to be a composer to tell that a band playing out of key sounds like trash.
He was joking when he said that
@@camronyearout1158 no body is saying that you need to be as good as the one you are critiquing . You should just atleast understand the process. Understand how hard it is to make the thing that you shit on regulary.
I love cooking, thats why I never want it to be my job, it would ruin it for me, respect to proper chefs
Being a food critic requires skill? Wich one wozld it be being able to eat? being able to breath too or is it bonus?
I don't get why food critics are able to be critics without ever working in a restaurant before. They only sit down and move their mouth and leave.
"....a magnificent 14k a year." Yeah nah, I dunno if I can call that magnificent.
You have to see a standard Chef de Partie or Sous chef salary in a Gordon Ramsay Restaurant ...Very Magnificent!!..LOL
Whoosh
Ever heard of sarcasm?
Not bad in 2005 when this was broadcasted
It's Pounds Sterling, so at the time this was filmed in 2005, that's about $26,000 per year. A fairly goodentry level wage for a teenager, or low skill worker.
Finally a critic know what it means to be in this career. And how extremely difficult it is.
"If I wanted to work all day I'd get a proper job". He ain't wrong.
so now he wants to be a film critic? basically, he can't do anything but criticize other people's work. what a worthless waste of space
It's a joke you twat.
hold up, are you criticizing him?
For the people that dint know, this video is from 2005 but reuploaded on 2018.
The 14k a year is in the value of pound not usd, back then this is consider a moderate amount.
14k in the UK in 2005 was minimum wage i.e. the lowest amount of money they could legally get away with paying.
What to do to become a food critic?
You shouldn't know a damn about food...
that guy has a show on netflix where he tours unique hotels with another lady. its pretty good
14,000 a year?
8am to midnight for 14k a year.... NOPE!
I was expecting 140,000 a year lol
You use copping board yellow to cutting fish?
"Starts at 8am and ends at Midnight starting at a magnificent 14,000 a year" 😂😂😂 Get the fook out of here! Talk about about having no life for slave pay LOL
I was curious to see how he would fare. When he started peeling that salsify at his pace, I was like: 'Oh, boy ... '
Then he started cutting the onions and I switched to: 'Please stop...'
Then he got grossed out at having to debone fish and remove their eyes and I was just done. His chef was right. He'd never get hired in any kitchen with that attitude and working at that pace.
Critic about foods can't even peel or cut food properly yah people listen to people like this about food??
When is this from?
14,000 a year working 15 hour days? You actually get paid slightly more on unemployment benefits in Australia.
they start at 8 AM and end at midnight? I did not know it was legal to work 16 houres a day. Actually, I highly doubt it. Where I live there's a law that there has to be a least 10 houres between shifts. (for non essential jobs)
Just because he’s a critic, doesn’t mean he should be able to cook. He’s good at judging, maybe not producing. Just like a car critic doesnt make his own cars...
Say No to Autonomous Driving Anyone can critique, you don't need any talent to do it ...
I wonder how much per hour or day does Gordon make?
14,000 a Year?.... That's Pittance.
They must split tips with the waiters? Just a guess, I know nothing about the restaurant industry
THAT GOES LIKE THIS.....
YOUR NOT GORDON 😂
Mr ramsay i love your shows plzz like this 😊😊😊😊
I do understand that to criticize something you should normally first know how the something works, what makes it, and how difficult it is to make but I mean, if you as a person can eat food and you know what kind of food you like and then you go out to eat food, and you pay for said food, you're allowed to criticize it if there were parts you didn't enjoy, that doesn't mean you're right and that doesn't make the chef bad but you don't need to know how to cook to criticize food, I do find it important to know how someone made a dish but I don't see where the sentiment of "if you've never done this how can you criticize it" like I've never made a movie but I can say that the new Ice Age movies are bad. I could go more in depth but you know what I mean
"14 thousand a year"..... Bruh I'm 18 and I make double that
Love this guy
I’m glad they mentioned the salary lol, that’s actually common for chefs. Hell he still gets paid more than half the people in my department
For double the average hours tho
His kitchen skills are too relatable
Amy’s cats meow meow meow meow
I challenge Gordon Ramsey to come work my job chucking rods on a drill for 14 hours a day.
Philip McAuley I challenge Ramsey to do my job, is army infantry Afghanistan multiple tours and Iraq
Tbh sounds like a shitty job
Chris Winter lol dumb grunt lol my history/political science degree from NYU must also be dumb.......being in charge of hundreds of millions of dollars worth of equipment is equally dumb and I’m sure your much more qualified and more intelligent to operate drone systems than me...... I have more respect for the taliban than people like you who disrespect serving military personnel, at least they fight, you let others like the dumb ones do it for you...... I have a feeling your from the uk also......and I wasn’t bashing Ramsey you ignorant fuck, I think he’s awesome, I’d love to see him do a military reality tv show...... I do multiple tours because of the people who serve I’m dedicated to, the nation I’m dedicated to, and especially dedicated to the people who lost their lives on 9/11......
Chris Winter I’ve got post secondary schooling, but I can’t a job that pays as good as mine does with it.
I don’t think being a chef makes you a very smart person or requires the highest of education.
I’m not here to argue with you on TH-cam comments. I have nothing to prove to you. I just don’t think being a chef is a very hard job.
Philip McAuley exactly buddy, not sure where this guy is coming from, in his world you must have to have a PHD to be a chef
I'm a good cook, but I know i don't got it in me to be a professional chef. Just cooking diner for my family is an exhausting experinece, and im allowed to take as much time as I need. People really underestimate how hard it is not just to cook, but cook efficiently, and on a tight schedule.
Get this fool out of the kitchen before he hurts everyone
the only man allowed to roast Gordon
First
yeah being a food critic is sitting at a table, taste, and write your newpaper column if you liked it or not. Never did they know what it takes to be in the kitchen, but this one does now. :D
14k a year is that considered a lot in the UK?
"you are not gordon " 😂
I get that chefs of this caliber are motivated more by passion for cooking than wealth but 14K for 16 hours a day?! I didn't become a teacher for wealth but I still expect a fair pay check!
He's a food critic. he doesn't even need to have hands.
I make 14k a year from a 8:30 to 4 job this is shocking pay for that many hours they must make about £3.80 an hour and I make £6.70 an hour
that's the dude from million dollar critic holy shit i never thought i'll see him with gordon
Oh yeah! These people need to know where they truly stand.
08:00 until midnight at £14k a year?! Surely that’s under minimum wage
14k a year for all those hours of work, basically slave labour, and people still expect them to have passion
2:00 when he becomes a film critic, he should work for one day as a PA!
i love this guy
I had to put the captions on to know if i was hearing right. 14000 p.a. wow
How ca you critic food, when you bearly can clean some onions?
Work Time From 8am to Midnight.
Who says slavery doesn't exist?.
Definitely they have to give that smile on camera or else you're fired
That is absolute horrible pay.
I'm going to become a useless waste of space and air to be a food critic with Zero idea of cooking.
Just kidding. I love cooking and I love this job. Big respect to all hardworking chefs worldwide :)
Black band, vibrant yellow face, three...…….I have that farrari watch too. Got it in Dubai, because there were no cheaper alternatives.
Lots of mise en place i love it
Now they know how tough it is to be a chef
This plates fucking raw, RAW
Chef Angela!! Murano! I was offered a stage in her restaurant but couldnt get visas and passport together in time...man do i wish i could go.
Its about 19,643 in american dollars
"I'd get a proper job"
Define "proper job"
His version: slave labor
In the terms of "critics" now it's not in the same purpose in Liberal Arts. "Critics" means to be a bridge between society and the experts. It's suppose to be same terms in food, literature, arts, and social studies. It's not looking a bad findings reports only ...
Everything about the restaurant business makes me want to rip my hair out
