Its all part of this artform. There is always a good lesson in every tree and this was a perfect example of that.

I have a very small (1 gal) shop vac, and use that for both vacuuming my bonsai as well as putting the hose on the blow end and blow the flotsam and jetsam out of the way. I have a set of attachments for the vac designed to clean computer keyboards, and I love the little brush attachment for tidying my plants. :-)
Great, inspirational videos. I haven't had a bonsai for a while, and have just bought a ficus for indoor cultivation after seeing your videos. Hopefully I can get further into the art this time and keep the tree going for a long time.

Gah that totally looks like a moved-in seedling at 25min, I love the idea *so long as* bougies will fuse, I've only begun fusion experiments but with ficus and 1 other species, not bougies as they just don't callous well and that seems part&parcel for fusing-behavior, but yeah at *some* point fusion must occur if two pieces are forced to grow-into each other (ie if you zip-tied the trunks of two lil whips, they'd eventually fuse as they split the zip-tie), if I can get approach/thread grafting to work on my bougies it will be a game-changer am so glad I've rewatched this one :D
I assume the tree didn’t make it, as no update on what it looks like now. I received some good advice from a Master many years ago. When the soft wood rots, remove all the way back to the hardwood, then coat it with wood glue. He added some colouring into the wood glue depending on the color of the natural bark of the tree. Seals area well and keeps the rot away. If I remember his mix had a couple of drops of antibacterial liquid also. Instead of mixing for myself I just bought from him. Lime Sulphur also works, but the glue worked better.
The tree is still alive. I did however a complete restyle once again removing most of the deadwood and focused on those interior exposed roots. It is now developing into a full exposed root cascade. I’ll post photos soon

Oh and I know it's 'meta'/esoteric but it'd be awesome to see a video *exclusively* on aesthetics/style-theory/artistry, not just getting those 2nd-hand as results/inherently-included parts of a specific-bonsai-re-styling but attack the topics head-on. For instance the merits of a tree like this one where it is a radically different tree depending upon the angle (I'm still torn between the "360 beauty" and "dedicated front" approaches, I have a ton of bougies that are similar enough to yours here *insofar as* the size & the extent of deadwood, thankfully most haven't gone through any significant deadwood-loss just yet, at any rate I could develop so many of them very very nicely IF I was only worried about 1 side, because this would let me get-away with massive wounds that were incredibly unappealing in short-order, of course. I think that it's worth a discussion, I mean I fully see that the front/back way is "the norm" and that it, of course, is far better for single-picture snapshots of a tree which is how they're often shared &, I assume, judged at competitions. However, when it's your own tree, and you're in the habit of rotating your stock routinely (relative to sun), you tend to yearn for 360degree beauty not just a perfect Front, would love to hear your thoughts on such subjects from front/back to presentation to theory, any&all would be awesome I don't think there's a single bonsai vid on youtube that's not tree-based but aesthetics-based, you could have the 1st :D )
Hi, I loved your video. Info sharing. . Your diva is a beauty and I can see how much you care for her. I have one... a pink...that’s 10 years old. I want to repot it but I need to know when to do the repotting. Do I do it now... in fall... or wait until blooming is done? You are right. A correct blend of aesthetics and horticultural knowledge is a good thing to have a successful bonsai.
I have a 40 year old boganvilla similar to your tree. I've been letting it grow out for about 3 years now intermittently cutting it back trying to prepare it to be styled . last styling attempt was a failure on my part not sure if the gauge wire I used was too thick but the trees seemed too soft to handle it and I damaged my branching while wiring. beautiful trunk it has it's probably a couple inches thicker than yours but of course being a bougainvillea the rotting has taken place in some parts. if I sent you a picture of my tree I'd love it if you had any recommendations for me. pretty novice here.
Help please! Jan. 11 just dug up and potted a big bougie stump. It was covered with ants. Got most off with hose. Potted the bougie anyway how do I get rid of the remaining colony living in my tree. Thank you

it's nice to see this... i'm a big fan of bonsai... actually i have bougainvillea bonsai. but sad to say i'm having trouble on how to make it to the best look like the one on the bonsai shows... do you know how to turn all the green leaves into modified leaves? i mean all you can see is not the color green...
The change in leaves will occur during the summer months but I have found that if you cut back on the watering the tree gets stressed and that causes the tree to put out its colors as a survival method Also I have used bloom buster fertilizer with good success. Normally I defoliate a couple months before a show and then load it up with the bloom buster so I can time it correctly to be at its peak flowering when on display.
This was really neat to see. I didn't know you could propagate so easily from cuttings. Great to know, I think I'll try to propagate some of the bougainvillea I have here at the house. I would love to see a video on how you developed the trunk to be so thick. I looked at your website for some of the blog entries but didn't find much. Based on the original photos I would guess you wired several branches together until they grew together?
To thicken any trunk it takes time and space. Trees in bonsai pots are not gonna thicken too much. Try putting the young tree in the ground or a big pot and let it grow for like 5+ years. Then like magic you get big fat trunk.

I have a Bougainvillea Bonsai I purchased out of California and I have it for about 6 weeks. It is an older tree with a beautiful Trunk but the Tree is dropping a lot of leaves after they turn yellow (below the new leaf growth of which there is some) and has not flowered yet. I live in New Orleans and it gets plenty of Full on Sun and I only water it every 3 or 4 days. It came in a very gravelly type soil and I am wondering if I need to transplant it into a different type of soil? I really want this tree to do well and need some help. Is it normal for the Bougs to lose a lot of leaves and look wilty? I did fertilize it with "Bougain" when I first got it. Thanks for any help! Joe
I just bought a bougainvillea about a week ago. I live in Canada so it's kinda cold now but it's fairly warm in my house and there lots of sunshine but the flowers or the coloured leaves fall off ( the small leaves) if anybody knows why please reply!!! Thx
beautiful work! would you provide the type of soil for this bonsai, and where should I buy them from. I have tried many times to cut nice branches, dipped with root hormone, but they all died, what did I do wrong? thanks
Check out you tube for bonsai soil mixtures. Everybody has different recipes they use. The goal is to make sure your recipe is well draining as to not promote root rot. Generally cuttings should be 5-6 inches, semi hard wood, all but 1 or 2 leaves removed and placed in a well draining semi firm soil mix. The key while rooting cuttings is to keep the humidity around 90-100% this can be achieved by putting them in a greenhouse or building a makeshift "greenhouse" around the tender cuttings
Joe thats awesome. I was really on the fence because the other side has been the front for so long, but yes the more I looked at it the better it looked. It jas so much more character this way and is just going to be amazing very soon
Loved this!!! I am a newbie. I bought a small Bougainvillea 4 weeks ago and all the red flowers have dropped off. I have had it in the shade of an umbrella on my balcony as it has been hot here in So Cal. Can you suggest a place for me to check why this might have happened?
The red are called bracts not flowers, the flowers are the small white centers. The bracts last for a couple of months but you should get another round sometime around September.
Great instructional video OrlandoBonsaiTV! I live in the Melbourne Beach area & I have a huge (massive) bougie that I am trying to make into a tree. I've managed to trim away enough of it that I have a decent trunk that is about 5-6 inch diameter & about 6-7 ft high. However I can't stop it from shooting new growth on the trunk area. Do you know if there's some thing I can put on the trunk area that would stop new growth? I love Bougies!!! Thanks in advance! :)
Thanks very much. The new growth is the good thing and bad thing about bougies. It's good because you can always get growth to develop new branches. The bad part is you'll keep getting them until you're canopy is dense enough to shade the trunk. Nothing you can do except cutting them off as they come. So glad you're local. Hopefully see you at the bonsai societies of Florida convention next week in Orlando

Thanks for the video; this was fascinating! I've really enjoyed most of your series, it has been really helpful as we've started on the path for bonsai! I did have a question though; my boyfriend has a privet that he is working with. It is still fairly young, and he really wants to develop thicker branches. It is a very happy little tree and it will grow length at great speed. I've heard you say two things about getting branches thicker; the first was that you wanted to let it go and grow, because it was like a water system.. the more demand there is for resources from the branch, the thicker the "pipe" needs to be in place. Then in this video you said that letting it grow longer and cutting it back repeatedly would thicken it. Is this a difference in working with a vine-type vs a traditional tree? Or is the answer on thicker branches a combination of the two?
Sorry for the confusion. I must of said it wrong in this video. The purpose of letting it grow out then cutting it back will give better ramification (inner branches of the branch being cut back). Which will produce more leaves since there are more branches. If you just let the branch grow you don't get the ramification but the branch will thicken as more leaves grow on the branch. So for you let the branch grow out until it is as thick as you want it
OrlandoBonsaiTV I'll have to watch again, I may have just misheard (and it may have been another video that popped up after this one that you did). Thank you for the clarification anyway, though! Eventually we'll want to go for more ramification with it, but for now its just young and spindly. We'll continue to let it grow rampant. :)

Zorica Rajic You can thicken the trunk by putting it into a large pot (not a bonsai pot yet) to give the tree a chance to grow. Let the foliage grow without pruning. The more growth you have on the tree the thicker the trunk will get. Once the trunk is thick enough you can prune the foliage back and get it into a bonsai pot at that time
+syafiq asmuni I find letting the tree get a little dry during the growing season promotes the tree to start to gain the color to the bracks (the color of the bogainvellea)
syafiq asmuni Yes, full sun and dry heat. I live in the Sonora desert and this and oleander are the two most resilient flowering greenery in these parts. Summer temps here reach 120 f.
Hi, I was wondering when you do cut a really thick trunk by growing the plant out do you have to cut it back drastically so it's sort of just a stump. Your videos explain everything well and you go into detail which is awesome but I'm just not sure how you reduce the size of a tree that has been growing in the ground for five years or so. Thanks, it's hard to find these things out. There isn't many Australian bonsai nurseries I can ask.
I think I understand your question. Depending on how thick I need the trunk I lest grow for a season or two and then cut it back to the length I need before starting another leader that will grown out and again cut back so the trunk tapers as it goes towards the top. I cut trunk as angle sloping towards the back so the cut isn't flat instead it hides the scars in the back. I hope that answers your question

Hey i wanted to share something thats happening to my maple trees, i have two, well three now cuse i successfully air lay one (thanks to your vid) anyways 50% of each leaf is drying out. I had the trees in the sun on early summer but move them to the shade when i notice it, but the leaves keep drying what should i do. I live in california and the temperature hardly reaches 95*f. Thanks for taking your time to read this. And it will be awsome if you sit and talk to us about an specific tree on some videos, no need to work on them just talk to us about its needs. Maples don't like to be very hot and in late summer those trees really start to show stress. I would suggest keeping it in the shaded sunlight until into Fall when it will drop its leaves. Also its the warm nights that really hurt those trees because they don't get a chance to cool down and night and don't have a way to get enough water flowing to help it cool because the roots are still developing. Give it a good fertilizer with a high second number and lower first and third numbers. Congrats on the air layer, that's just so cool that you tried it and did it!!
Love your work mate! Great video! I just found a similar size tree while clearing some bush on my land here on koh tao, thailand. I made a short video on my channel. I've scraped away all the soft bits and will seal it when it dries. I'm looking for some advice on how to get the best from it. It was just a bare trunk when I dug it up and a month later it's shooting out branches and even starting to flower! This is my first time...
Let me think about that. I'm going to need to get some material to do that with. Of course my first thoughts are Trident Maple or a Ficus. However at this time of the year the maple would be the way to go.
Try spraying your tree with about a quart of water with a cap full of dish soap in it. It will rinse the tree to remove any sweet smell that might be attracting them, and the soap will keep insects away. Also the soap won't hurt the tree or roots
oiblin Bougainvillea is great material for bonsai and even when the center wood rots the tree remains healthy I only talk about it to make you aware that it will occur and the look of the tree will continue to evolve into a more hollow look

Thanks Jack and so happy you found a bougainillea to work on. Just remember to protect the tree under 40 dgrees and large cuts will not heal. That is waht causes the tree to root away. If you have to make a large cut add Wood Hardener to the wound to help it last longer. Let the branches grow out to thicken them up then cut them back and keep repeating the process to get it to ramify better Good luck!!
Hello again, hope you don't mind. I have another question. I read that Bougainvillea plant has very fine root system and I have just bought a 3.5 gallons Bougainvillea plant. How should I go by transferring the plant into a bonsai 3 inches pot without disturbing the root system? I know I will need to take out soil and cut up some root but not sure how to approach this correctly. Any suggestion / advise is greatly appreciated. :) Thanks again. Jack

Jack Wong Don't worry you are not going to have any issue getting thoise roots into that pot. Just take your time raking it out then rinse it with the garden hose. Roots ar epretty strong so not an issue atthis time of the year
Watching @25:00 makes it hard to think that lil branch is part of the original specimen (looks like a whip/seedling that was put in-place, with its visible roots going-down the inside of the cavity instead of simply fusing-into it), hope my tone doesn't convey anything is *wrong* with that in fact I'm going to be attempting some mergings of that sort now that I've got the idea (bougies are like 2/3rd's of my ~150 tree collection down near Tampa where they just grow insane) I've got some tips for *bougie* deadwood you may like, feel silly suggesting anything to a veteran like you but I grow so many bougies, almost exclusively large ones I lift from the ground 'yardadori' stock, and have found *two* things to be absolutely essential for working with the deadwood (neither of which you seem to be employing), 1st is that you've gotta clear-out any&every compromised piece of deadwood, this is often difficult insofar as requiring larger removals than you'd like (like a good chunk of half your tree in this example) however if it's not done the compromised deadwood tissue will simply spread & contaminate/soften ALL deadwood attached to it, there's no way around this IME. 2nd is that, while lime sulfur/LS is helpful as a coating (and sanitizing), it's to be used after the prime means of protection which IME is burnishing, I use a handheld little butane torch usually 1 day after exposing the deadwood (sometimes I'll just do it immediately, though I'm finding the protection is better when the wood was dry when it was fired and since I like to use the hose - a lot - when carving I end-up with wet deadwood that isn't fully ready to take a proper burnishing) Thanks for posting all these videos, your work & presentation is awesome I've probably seen this video 4-5x now lol, hope things are going great at the nursery as you get ready for fall!!!

For instance the merits of a tree like this one where it is a radically different tree depending upon the angle (I'm still torn between the "360 beauty" and "dedicated front" approaches, I have a ton of bougies that are similar enough to yours here *insofar as* the size & the extent of deadwood, thankfully most haven't gone through any significant deadwood-loss just yet, at any rate I could develop so many of them very very nicely IF I was only worried about 1 side, because this would let me get-away with massive wounds that were incredibly unappealing in short-order, of course. I think that it's worth a discussion, I mean I fully see that the front/back way is "the norm" and that it, of course, is far better for single-picture snapshots of a tree which is how they're often shared &, I assume, judged at competitions. However, when it's your own tree, and you're in the habit of rotating your stock routinely (relative to sun), you tend to yearn for 360degree beauty not just a perfect Front, would love to hear your thoughts on such subjects from front/back to presentation to theory, any&all would be awesome I don't think there's a single bonsai vid on youtube that's not tree-based but aesthetics-based, you could have the 1st :D )

Hi, I loved your video. Info sharing. . Your diva is a beauty and I can see how much you care for her. I have one... a pink...that’s 10 years old. I want to repot it but I need to know when to do the repotting. Do I do it now... in fall... or wait until blooming is done? You are right. A correct blend of aesthetics and horticultural knowledge is a good thing to have a successful bonsai.
I have a 40 year old boganvilla similar to your tree. I've been letting it grow out for about 3 years now intermittently cutting it back trying to prepare it to be styled . last styling attempt was a failure on my part not sure if the gauge wire I used was too thick but the trees seemed too soft to handle it and I damaged my branching while wiring. beautiful trunk it has it's probably a couple inches thicker than yours but of course being a bougainvillea the rotting has taken place in some parts. if I sent you a picture of my tree I'd love it if you had any recommendations for me. pretty novice here.

it's nice to see this... i'm a big fan of bonsai... actually i have bougainvillea bonsai. but sad to say i'm having trouble on how to make it to the best look like the one on the bonsai shows... do you know how to turn all the green leaves into modified leaves? i mean all you can see is not the color green...
The change in leaves will occur during the summer months but I have found that if you cut back on the watering the tree gets stressed and that causes the tree to put out its colors as a survival method Also I have used bloom buster fertilizer with good success. Normally I defoliate a couple months before a show and then load it up with the bloom buster so I can time it correctly to be at its peak flowering when on display.
What is the brand and ware do you get your watering system heads I guess mine are really inefficient and spray all over the place.

This was really neat to see. I didn't know you could propagate so easily from cuttings. Great to know, I think I'll try to propagate some of the bougainvillea I have here at the house. I would love to see a video on how you developed the trunk to be so thick. I looked at your website for some of the blog entries but didn't find much. Based on the original photos I would guess you wired several branches together until they grew together?
To thicken any trunk it takes time and space. Trees in bonsai pots are not gonna thicken too much. Try putting the young tree in the ground or a big pot and let it grow for like 5+ years. Then like magic you get big fat trunk.

I have a Bougainvillea Bonsai I purchased out of California and I have it for about 6 weeks. It is an older tree with a beautiful Trunk but the Tree is dropping a lot of leaves after they turn yellow (below the new leaf growth of which there is some) and has not flowered yet.
I live in New Orleans and it gets plenty of Full on Sun and I only water it every 3 or 4 days. It came in a very gravelly type soil and I am wondering if I need to transplant it into a different type of soil? I really want this tree to do well and need some help. Is it normal for the Bougs to lose a lot of leaves and look wilty? I did fertilize it with "Bougain" when I first got it.

I just bought a bougainvillea about a week ago. I live in Canada so it's kinda cold now but it's fairly warm in my house and there lots of sunshine but the flowers or the coloured leaves fall off ( the small leaves) if anybody knows why please reply!!!

Check out you tube for bonsai soil mixtures. Everybody has different recipes they use. The goal is to make sure your recipe is well draining as to not promote root rot. Generally cuttings should be 5-6 inches, semi hard wood, all but 1 or 2 leaves removed and placed in a well draining semi firm soil mix. The key while rooting cuttings is to keep the humidity around 90-100% this can be achieved by putting them in a greenhouse or building a makeshift "greenhouse" around the tender cuttings

What season is the best time to plant the bonsai ?
If rot is typical of the bougainvillea maybe keeping it indoors is best? I live in a cold climate where it must be indoors much of the year.

Loved this!!! I am a newbie. I bought a small Bougainvillea 4 weeks ago and all the red flowers have dropped off. I have had it in the shade of an umbrella on my balcony as it has been hot here in So Cal. Can you suggest a place for me to check why this might have happened?
The red are called bracts not flowers, the flowers are the small white centers. The bracts last for a couple of months but you should get another round sometime around September.

Great instructional video OrlandoBonsaiTV! I live in the Melbourne Beach area & I have a huge (massive) bougie that I am trying to make into a tree. I've managed to trim away enough of it that I have a decent trunk that is about 5-6 inch diameter & about 6-7 ft high. However I can't stop it from shooting new growth on the trunk area. Do you know if there's some thing I can put on the trunk area that would stop new growth?

Thanks very much. The new growth is the good thing and bad thing about bougies. It's good because you can always get growth to develop new branches. The bad part is you'll keep getting them until you're canopy is dense enough to shade the trunk. Nothing you can do except cutting them off as they come. So glad you're local. Hopefully see you at the bonsai societies of Florida convention next week in Orlando

I did have a question though; my boyfriend has a privet that he is working with. It is still fairly young, and he really wants to develop thicker branches. It is a very happy little tree and it will grow length at great speed. I've heard you say two things about getting branches thicker; the first was that you wanted to let it go and grow, because it was like a water system.. the more demand there is for resources from the branch, the thicker the "pipe" needs to be in place. Then in this video you said that letting it grow longer and cutting it back repeatedly would thicken it. Is this a difference in working with a vine-type vs a traditional tree? Or is the answer on thicker branches a combination of the two?
Sorry for the confusion. I must of said it wrong in this video. The purpose of letting it grow out then cutting it back will give better ramification (inner branches of the branch being cut back). Which will produce more leaves since there are more branches. If you just let the branch grow you don't get the ramification but the branch will thicken as more leaves grow on the branch. So for you let the branch grow out until it is as thick as you want it

Eventually we'll want to go for more ramification with it, but for now its just young and spindly. We'll continue to let it grow rampant. :)

Zorica Rajic You can thicken the trunk by putting it into a large pot (not a bonsai pot yet) to give the tree a chance to grow. Let the foliage grow without pruning. The more growth you have on the tree the thicker the trunk will get. Once the trunk is thick enough you can prune the foliage back and get it into a bonsai pot at that time

syafiq asmuni Yes, full sun and dry heat. I live in the Sonora desert and this and oleander are the two most resilient flowering greenery in these parts. Summer temps here reach 120 f.

Hi, I was wondering when you do cut a really thick trunk by growing the plant out do you have to cut it back drastically so it's sort of just a stump. Your videos explain everything well and you go into detail which is awesome but I'm just not sure how you reduce the size of a tree that has been growing in the ground for five years or so. Thanks, it's hard to find these things out. There isn't many Australian bonsai nurseries I can ask.
I think I understand your question. Depending on how thick I need the trunk I lest grow for a season or two and then cut it back to the length I need before starting another leader that will grown out and again cut back so the trunk tapers as it goes towards the top. I cut trunk as angle sloping towards the back so the cut isn't flat instead it hides the scars in the back. I hope that answers your question

I have just bought a small trident maple and that's the one I am growing in the ground and i am hoping to eventually make something like you have. Also do you have any favourite styles or shapes for trident maple bonsai's or bonsai's in general as all your bonsai look fantastic.

Hey i wanted to share something thats happening to my maple trees, i have two, well three now cuse i successfully air lay one (thanks to your vid) anyways 50% of each leaf is drying out. I had the trees in the sun on early summer but move them to the shade when i notice it, but the leaves keep drying what should i do. I live in california and the temperature hardly reaches 95*f. Thanks for taking your time to read this. And it will be awsome if you sit and talk to us about an specific tree on some videos, no need to work on them just talk to us about its needs. Maples don't like to be very hot and in late summer those trees really start to show stress. I would suggest keeping it in the shaded sunlight until into Fall when it will drop its leaves. Also its the warm nights that really hurt those trees because they don't get a chance to cool down and night and don't have a way to get enough water flowing to help it cool because the roots are still developing. Give it a good fertilizer with a high second number and lower first and third numbers. Congrats on the air layer, that's just so cool that you tried it and did it!!

I just found a similar size tree while clearing some bush on my land here on koh tao, thailand. I made a short video on my channel. I've scraped away all the soft bits and will seal it when it dries. I'm looking for some advice on how to get the best from it. It was just a bare trunk when I dug it up and a month later it's shooting out branches and even starting to flower! Let me think about that. I'm going to need to get some material to do that with. Of course my first thoughts are Trident Maple or a Ficus. However at this time of the year the maple would be the way to go.

Try spraying your tree with about a quart of water with a cap full of dish soap in it. It will rinse the tree to remove any sweet smell that might be attracting them, and the soap will keep insects away. Also the soap won't hurt the tree or roots
All and all,does this mean bougainvilleas are not suitable for Bonsai? Since you mentioned that no matter what, it will rot out one day.
oiblin Bougainvillea is great material for bonsai and even when the center wood rots the tree remains healthy I only talk about it to make you aware that it will occur and the look of the tree will continue to evolve into a more hollow look

Thanks Jack and so happy you found a bougainillea to work on. Just remember to protect the tree under 40 dgrees and large cuts will not heal. That is waht causes the tree to root away. If you have to make a large cut add Wood Hardener to the wound to help it last longer. Let the branches grow out to thicken them up then cut them back and keep repeating the process to get it to ramify better Good luck!!

Hello again, hope you don't mind. I have another question. I read that Bougainvillea plant has very fine root system and I have just bought a 3.5 gallons Bougainvillea plant. How should I go by transferring the plant into a bonsai 3 inches pot without disturbing the root system? I know I will need to take out soil and cut up some root but not sure how to approach this correctly. Any suggestion / advise is greatly appreciated. :) Thanks again. Jack

Jack Wong Don't worry you are not going to have any issue getting thoise roots into that pot. Just take your time raking it out then rinse it with the garden hose. Roots ar epretty strong so not an issue atthis time of the year
Watching @25:00 makes it hard to think that lil branch is part of the original specimen (looks like a whip/seedling that was put in-place, with its visible roots going-down the inside of the cavity instead of simply fusing-into it), hope my tone doesn't convey anything is *wrong* with that in fact I'm going to be attempting some mergings of that sort now that I've got the idea (bougies are like 2/3rd's of my ~150 tree collection down near Tampa where they just grow insane)
I've got some tips for *bougie* deadwood you may like, feel silly suggesting anything to a veteran like you but I grow so many bougies, almost exclusively large ones I lift from the ground 'yardadori' stock, and have found *two* things to be absolutely essential for working with the deadwood (neither of which you seem to be employing), 1st is that you've gotta clear-out any&every compromised piece of deadwood, this is often difficult insofar as requiring larger removals than you'd like (like a good chunk of half your tree in this example) however if it's not done the compromised deadwood tissue will simply spread & contaminate/soften ALL deadwood attached to it, there's no way around this IME. 2nd is that, while lime sulfur/LS is helpful as a coating (and sanitizing), it's to be used after the prime means of protection which IME is burnishing, I use a handheld little butane torch usually 1 day after exposing the deadwood (sometimes I'll just do it immediately, though I'm finding the protection is better when the wood was dry when it was fired and since I like to use the hose - a lot - when carving I end-up with wet deadwood that isn't fully ready to take a proper burnishing)
