(Moving picture -Fox and Asian racoon's cheats each other)
    Director:Ikuo Oishi
In the temple that became ruins, the fox that disguises as the samurai does the fight of magic with Asian racoon's parent and child.
It seems that it was influenced from the style of Max Fleischer's Cartoon.

    Synopsis↓
Night of full moon, a fox masquerading as a samurai arrives at a certain old temple. The raccoon dog of the old temple makes various mischief to this samurai, but on the contrary, the samurai teases the raccoon dog. The bullied raccoon dog asks his father raccoon dog to avenge and attempts a counterattack against the samurai. However, the samurai is strong and his father raccoon dog is cornered. At that time, the raccoon dog discovers the samurai's gold rod and hits the samurai from behind. The fainted samurai returned to the fox, and the raccoon dog's parents and children celebrated his victory.

I love how this early animation is both familiar yet oozes with Japanese folklore, comedy, horror and storytelling. I even love that they had a traditional instrument soundtrack added much like symphonies were used in Looney Toons years later. Very cool!

Ohh, it's about a fox (狐狸精) in eastern Asian legend which like to troll people who are still on the street late. The fox can transform to anything and trick people with illusion using its magic.

The most important premise: Japanese considered foxes and raccoons are able to turn their looks into something they want to be, and they use the strange power to astonish people since ancient age.
So this story is the fighting between a evil white foxes ,which can turn into Samurai (in other words, Bushi),
and a child and father of raccoon.

Also, both animals are believed to be able to transfer themselves into other creatures including human-beings. Sound effect of the film is amazing. I wonder how Japnese people in 1933 thought of the film.

    • @BananaPhoPhilly
      @BananaPhoPhilly 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

@@krunkle5136 No. They didn't imply anything, you're just propping up japanese animation when you don't need to. Fluidity is almost optional when it comes to animation (it looks really nice i.e. in Akira, but it's more about presentation than necessity) and sometimes choppier animation looks better for the art style.
However, older Japanese cartoons were very fluid at 24fps like American cartoons, because the Japanese hadn't found their own footing yet and their cartoons weren't nearly as detailed for every frame as later Japanese cartoons

Interesting to think that some of the Japanese soldiers who fought in WWII would have seen this when they were young. There would also have been people still alive in this time who would have lived by Bushido as Samurai before the turn of the century. I would've expected cheap knockoffs of the animation of that era, but this thing is very advanced: parallax backgrounds, perspectives, painted backdrops, and pretty smooth animation at times. Did some research last night, and it's based on the folk tale of The Fox and the Tanuki. The Tanuki is sort of a raccoon-dog creature native to Japan.

    奇妙な変身や魔法の発想がすばらしい。電話先にテレポーテーションするなんてシュールすぎますねw。カメラワークも非常に独特で面白いです。日本人から見てもfelixの影響が見てとれますね。

This strikes me as something you could put in a horror film. It could be playing on the tv when they find the first body, and you could cut out all the sounds of people screaming and just have this soundtrack play over it. Ultra creepy.
The cartoon itself is really neat - way more interesting than most Mickey Mouse stuff from the period. But maybe that's just because I think tanuki are less creepy than mice ^_^

This is actually more Max Fleischer's animation style, getting along well with all of Japan's spooky Yokai ghost stories. Anime style would not be a thing for another decade or so, beginning with war propoganda like Imokawa Mukuzo Genkanban no Maki. Animator Osamu Tezuka, creator of Astro Boy and so-called 'Godfather of Anime', would have barely been out of his teens at the point that this animation was made. What you're seeing is actually Western animation sticking its dick into Japan and making the first anime babies.

@@GoldieTamamo Look up Taro's Train. It was released in 1929, and the animation bit is quite detailed and doesn't as much use the rubber hose style. There was another one with a similar style about two old men that dance for tengu, forget its name though.

That's fortunate, because I'm sure there are people who would praise this cartoon on the sole basis that it's from Japan, despite being a lot more like the American cartoons of its day rather than the way anime is now. I apologize for suspecting you of being one of them. I could have said India, Turkey, Brazil, or Switzerland instead of China, but you'd give the same response.
This is a great cartoon indeed. I wish it had an English dub or subtitles though, it'd make the experience better IMO.

@BankaiIchigo12345 "Anime style" hadn't been invented yet. In 1933, Japanese people were watching American cartoons like Mickey Mouse, Silly Symphonies, Felix the Cat and Betty Boop, and their animation style reflects that. In fact, "anime style" is, in many ways, an imitation of it. The big eyes in anime come from American cartoon characters.

What a great example of early animation utilizing what appears to be a multiplane camera. I wonder if this was inspiration for William Garity of Disney's multiplane invention?

This has the feel of a 1930s Fleischer Studios cartoon and is interesting, i'm sure they influenced this cartoon's director.
