Put a transmission jack under each tire while the car is on the lift. (Obviously don't topple the car off the lift...) This will compress the suspension to simulate vehicle load. You might find the bad component that way. Sometimes when the suspension hangs it actually binds up a loose bushing or ball joint so you can't detect the free-play in it.
Had similar knocking sound on my e92 after 80k. Could not see any loose links. Changing front struts fixed it. Getting them out of pinch clamps was the biggest issue as bolts had seized.
check everything when wheels are not hanging loose. had a similar issue with e38, replaced even bearings, turned out that some nuts can`t tighten when wheels are not suspended.
Hi Nathan Did you ever solve the knock. I have a E53 4.8is with the same noise Replaced control arm tie rod ends thust arm, stabilizer bar links and swaybar bushing Still have noise. Not sure I'd the front air strut can cause this. Stumped
Hey Nathan I would like to ask you for a tip as this is hard for me to diagnose (if you don't mind of course). I can do pretty much everything myself but I sometimes have to seek help elsewhere :) Front axle makes noises like if your arms and bushes are shot and need replacement. But they are all 2 months old (Lemforder set) and I barely drive the X5. It started off with corner turning at city speed only but now the noise is present each time I turn the wheel regardless if I drive or stand still and turn on the spot. But it does not translate into driving. The X5 goes straight no matter what and regardless if slow or full unlimited Autobahn speed. I suspect the upper front suspension mount which has a bearing in it (1st guess) or steering rack (2nd guess but just a wild one I do not really believe in). The somewhat clunky noise translates into the brake bedal. I can feel every clunk a tiny bit when it occurs which somewhat points me back to the control arm area again yet I know that a bad bearing can do the same as those things like to travel over any metal parts regardless where they originate throwing all good guesswork out of ballance :) Sorry for the lenght but tried to cover as much as possible to narrow it down the best.
Let’s see you change end links I just re did my suspension on my winter ride 2004 expedition all four shocks and springs, front calipers, rotors, pads Lower ball joints inner tie rod outer tie rod upper arm controls sway bar end links it took me two days no lift just three ton jack 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Hey man check the rear end because it has a independent rear suspension with a floating bell housing and you know that as the weight changes on a vehicle so does the sound man
Had same problem on my x3 on both sides left side changed a tie rod end and fixed it but right side is driving me crazy it Clank at the end when I'm steer the wheel have changed the lower ball joint ,lower suspension arm and lower right suspension arm too and still ..
Figure it out yet? I’m replacing my front struts soon on a guess that they are the problem but if that’s not it I’m SOL if it’s a diff or t case or something more, thanks in advance!
@leveluplife8585 I have the same problem on my 2001 4.4i e53. Did the strut mounts fix the noise? I have changed all suspension components and track rod ends. Steering rack is the last one is the noise is still there.
@@matthewbourne9624 My transfer case chain is stretched and that is my current diagnosis. A new one is like $80 and some rtv as well as about 8 hours of labor to pull it and replace it. I checked local junkyards already and they’re in worse shape than mine. My front driveshaft splines are still good enough to keep using so I only need the chain replaced. In the v8s they often start to stretch at 150k and for my 3.0i model I made it to 260k
Hi. What was the solution in the end? I have the exact same issue on my 640d, changing the sway-bar links didn't do anything, I checked all the subframe bolts, and the play in the joints. I can't see anything that causes the noise.
@BAIMS Hi, there were two issues, the clunk noise was a worn bushing on the suspension lower control arm. I took it to a guy who lifted the car up and put a pry bar between the lower control arm and pulled it and found about 2cm movement (excessive). I also video'd under the wheel arch, turned the wheels and saw a bit of movement as the click noise was heard in the same place, so I replaced both arms (always replace both). The bushes are cheap, but pressing them out needs specialist tools so replacing the arm is easier. The sounds you hear are different outside the car than inside. It was a click outside and a clunk inside. The second issue I found that the suspension top mount screws were over torqued, and as self tapping bolts, this meant the thread the self tapper makes into the top mount aluminium block was stripped and the screws were not actually holding the top mount as they should. This wasn't the cause of the noise though, but both also needed doing.
I just replaced my whole sway bar and links and this noise started. It's a lot worse than what you have...lots of popping. I was told it was the strut mounts as well, but they also said aftermarket sway bars might not be a proper fit. Not sure where to go from here
90% of the time its strut bushing, check on top first you dont even need to jack the car up to check and replace top one, they are known to disintegrated quick. otherwise pull the strut for inner bushing or replacement of strut
Having this issue too on my X5. Front end is creaking at take off. Also I’m throwing a p1092 code and sounds like the engine is hissing on the intake side but runs very smooth.
I am haveing this exact issue. Any body actually know whats the cause. Same as in this vid had vehicle up on hoist and can not find any reason. Everythings tight. No ripped boots.

Love the old fashioned diagnostic videos!
Dude, show us fixing the oil leak out of the linkage bolt on the trans. 👍
Literally never ween an x5 not fucking leaking from there.
Sound like a strut or strut mount to me or both. but I haven't looked at it either. Great video Nathan. Thanks alot.

My E53 has play in the steering rack itself. Makes clunking noises and wobbles under moderate braking.
Thruster arm bushes are worn. I had the same problem. Changed them and ball joint now the car runs smooth.
Did you check the strut tops? Those gave me clunking noises on my e39
In the uk that tie rod end and the sway bar link would most likely fail the MOT test. That strut would probably fail as well.
Strut mount were mentioned already. Also check the preload on the rack&pinion nut. The cluncking could come from a not tight enough contact there.
3:26 Is that subframe rusted through? I know there's always a gap to drain water but that frame looks compromised
Its just the paint flaking
The video might not be much, but it's a good refresher on what to look for, with suspension issues
Have you figured it out yet? Just did my front axles and now I’m getting the same noise and everything feels tight. Thanks
Same here. New axles and now clunking
check everything when wheels are not hanging loose.

it is ur sway bar end link?
It's due to body roll as well as the struts could be shot man. Its obvious that they are bad by the leakage
Enjoyed the video dude.
Check bolts at top of strut arm. Looking from engine bay top corners.
Let’s see you change end links
I just re did my suspension on my winter ride 2004 expedition all four shocks and springs, front calipers, rotors, pads
Lower ball joints inner tie rod outer tie rod upper arm controls sway bar end links it took me two days no lift just three ton jack

Thigt the 4 bolts that hold the aluminum cover under engine, same noise i had on my 2006 X3

My 2004 e53 has that frt clunking noise on the right when taking turns.
New arms, purple bushes. So its a common issue? 153k

Whats p1611?
I had my control arm replaced on passenger side. Now my side lites aren't working panel says check side lites. ?????
Can you make a video on how to remove and replace the GM transmission on the e53?

@@kevinchan2841 Hello, it's fixed! Ended up being the axle shaft.
@@thedevilhimself6557 thanks for reply, I changed the axle too probably need to torque it down and see again tomorrow
Nice video, Nathan, and excellent explanation. Continue your good work! 👍👍👍
Strut mounts?
Make sure you get lemforder sway bar links... Cheap chinese ones don't last!
I got some Febi for it
At least no death wobble like I get in my Jeep Cherokee Even after changing many parts
At least you had your seatbelt on lol
Do you find the problem Nathan?
You never said if you fixed it, I replaced upper lower control arms and rod ends to fix that clunk on my 06.
replaced everything but my sway links, had the same problem. Then replaced them and it completely went away
could also be your leaking strut. Also replaced mine
@@jgordon7719 I replaced sway bars and links and then the noise started. Didn't have it on the stock ones.
Check the double joint going to the rack
Great vid Nathen keep them coming!

Shock tower bushing, subframe bolt, or wheel hub
Damn man if she drives a hour each way each way where exactly does she work city wide man?
Hour round trip each day

Did you figure out the engine hissing issue?
Nice looking cars are like the X fives moment myself actually
Grease the inside of the strut top pole mine was annoying but some grease cured it
I am haveing this exact issue. Any body actually know whats the cause. Same as in this vid had vehicle up on hoist and can not find any reason. Everythings tight. No ripped boots.
I had a similar noise it was my motor mounts that would pop at times!!!
if it sounds like a door squeaking when you turn the wheel, its the steering coupler.
Put a big pry bar under the tire and have someone move it up and down while you lay under and listen for the noise
I had the same problem, it was the stabilizer link, it was somehow loose
I was just thinking that it might be the struts also.
Good one ccv classic man always love everything you put out! I appreciate you.
I liked the video
I faced this problem....found out ot was the Transfer case chain
Interesting
Check strut mount
Westlake tires are dangerous
Humming sounds but not loud, middle of car 5 series 2004
Good times video...
exhaust maybe?:)
Strut bearing
Don’t worry about the noise. What about your seatbelt 😂🤦🏻
what part was the Culprit Nathan? what part did you end up replacing?
well, I dont think you will respond anyway. I will just unsubscribe. If… lol
The driver side brake caliper was the issue
@@NathansBMWWorkshopWhat was wrong with the brake caliper?
