    He is such a sound golf instructor. Forget all the crap and polished productions. He just cuts to the chase, and doesn't let any schools of thought push him around. This is some of the best stuff I've seen, and I've watched a lot. He's no fluff, just logical. Thanks Paddy.

    I tried this at the range tonight and it totally transformed my iron shots. Before i was trying to smash the ball hard with limited success, but this showed me it's all about the timing of the release coupled with a smooth tempo. Thanks!

    Great video, could not agree more. So many instructors and videos are trying to increase lag by having you hold your wrist angles and not flip. What they don’t say is that all players have to release their wrist angles which means all players flip. The key is when the flip happens. Amateur players definitely release earlier than better players but we all flip. The key is timing when the release happens and lag is created by lower body rotation, not by artificially holding your wrists back. Well done Paddy 🏌🏻‍♂️

    Sir Paddy, I have to say I was never a big fan of yours. But after seeing your passion for helping others...aka...
    Common Weekend Warriors...aka...Hackers...here on TH-cam, I now know I was all wrong about you Sir. And for that, I sincerely apologize. This has to be the best most to the point succinct lesson I have ever seen. No positioning P 1-6 talk, but just simply how to freely swing and control the club, specifically the face. Hats off Sir! Thank you for your unselfish love of the World's Greatest game! I'll be rooting for you from know on in medal tournament play, but being American, no can do in the Ryder Cup! Lol! But still, good luck to the Europeans there as well! God Bless, and I wish you the best of luck out on The Tour! Your new fan...

      As a scratch player Ive watched quite a few of these. What Paddy THINKS he does and what he does are two different things. This one, for example, the moment the smalls muscles and joints (wrists) are focused on, you're screwed. Not good advice. Yes he's a Hall of Famer, but MANY elite golfers can't translate what they're doing properly. "Active" wrists is not a good explanation. I think what he is means is "relaxed wrists" without tension, and let them do what they will do naturally without tension holding them off.

    I started and fell in love with golf a year ago at age 55. They say it takes a year to learn your basic swing. I have watched hundreds of videos that stress using straight arms, shoulders, legs and torso only. "Never use wrists is their message". I have struggled to get consistency. My golf partner recently told me my swing was too robotic too "Woody" and to use the wrists more. I refused from all the advice on TH-cam. I tried flicking wrists last week on the driving range. What a Eurica moment? This video confirms my lesson and I am so greatful. Begin with short whip shots then lengthen the swing and incorporate the other principles. Thank you. I have subscribed as you hit the nail on the head for me.

  • @NoelPrendergast
    @NoelPrendergast 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thanks Paddy. These two videos are the best videos I have seen on the golf swing. I think most players learn golf without learning how to control the face at all, and then end up trying to control the ball with their bodies. Thanks a million, from Dublin. I believe your best is yet to come.

  • @brian2973
    @brian2973 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is my second time commenting on this video but I just need to express how helpful this lesson was. I have watched countless hours of golf instruction online but this video right here has had the most positive impact on my iron game. Bar none. If I'm ever having a bad round or bad range session I literally just revert back to using my wrists in the swing and I inevidably hit it straighter and more consistently. I might not get the distance that I would from my full body driven swing, but my body driven swing is so inconsistent lately that the slight yardage loss is irrelevant. My golf progress had plateaud until I watched this video. A couple of range sessions later I played my best round of my life. Recently I got conned (again) into thinking I was missing out on something by not fully using my body, firing my hips, generating ground force etc etc. I started going back down that rabbit hole and and my swing quickly went to sh*t afterwards. Today I was having the MOST frustrating range session because of this and then I remembered this lesson. I dropped all the fluff and got back to short swings and using my wrists and started flushing straight shots immediately. Thank you Paddy.

  • @waltvau
    @waltvau 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I used to normally flip the club and I was a fairly decent golfer somewhere around eight handicap. I started watching the golf instruction that said that it's not a good idea to flip the club and to hold lag as long as possible. And it literally tanked my game. I went to the golf range after watching the second lesson and I started getting my consistency back instantly. Thank you for sharing the information it helps out weekend 🏌🏻‍♂️

      Now I watch players who are built more like I am. 5'9 - 195 lbs. Stocky. None of this left arm straight hands away from the body. Just keep the wrists loose and the arms and shoulders without tension and the ball goes farther with less effort. Just turn a little faster and more with feet,ankle knees and hips. Narrower stance helps too if your hips aren't super flexible.

    • @supercarn

    You probably know already but your theory on skill learning is spot on.
    The best way to learn a new movement pattern is not to do 100s of reps of the ideal but do 100s alternating extremes around the ideal. Your body will then naturally zone in on the ideal without being forced.

    Excellent tip along the lines of what the great Bob Toski said.
    Noted teacher Bob Toski, though, loves to hit mammoth drives from his knees. The point, Toski says, is that the hands, wrists and arms can generate a huge amount of power.
    “I just don’t understand what these people (big-muscle advocates) are talking about,” Toski says. “The body can’t make a swing, because the body isn’t touching the club. You can’t get any speed from your shoulders.

    Great demonstration of the use of the wrists. I used to use them more the way you explained and could hit an acceptable distance. Now I notice I am not hinging them at the top of the swing. Tried your drill of consecutive swings with 5 balls lined up. This frees up the wrists. Excellent thank you. Got some power back.I was trying to extend my hands farther away from my body at the top but it doesn't feel smooth or natural. Too much strain and becomes unathletic.

    I think this instruction advice is aimed more towards the very advanced player with a really aggressive attitude towards releasing the club at the bottom and "letting it go". This is probably very good for the player who uses their arms to generate speed, which can "sometimes" produce a bit of a sluggish hit. Potential power lost when using the arms only and holding off on it. Good instruction and potentially a deadly piece of advice for some players who might have a fear of just aggressively letting it go. Hitting balls with the feet together naturally forces the player to release the hands and wrists. A great drill. Thanks!

      He is saying the reverse. In this and other videos he makes the point that using the big muscles, rapid hip rotation etc., to help generate club head speed, is for the elite player ie., those with natural ability, flexibility/strength and the time to seriously practice. As he says in this video, at that level while you use the wrists, there's probably less wrist action than he is recommending here. For the large majority of golfers he is recommending we maximize arm and hand speed with lots of wrist action because most of us are capable of doing this, even senior players with limited flexibility. Larry Rinker, a long time player on the PGA tour, makes exactly the same point and bases his teaching on speed via arms and wrists. You probably won't get 300 yds of carry with your drives this way but, 230 carry is easily achievable. That would be significantly more than the large majority of recreational golfers.

      @@pete3953 Yes, one always has to keep in mind, who is he really talking to. What type of player. It could easily debated which way is better to play for the advanced player. There are many very advanced players who play extremely well who primarily use the large muscles and some who play extremely well who primarily use the small muscles. It's not black and white, despite what a lot of teachers try to say. One has to be really careful with what they hear and see, regardless of who it is coming from. There is a little bit of good as well as bad in everything perhaps. One needs to try and figure things out for themselves in the long run. Find one's own way and stick to it like epoxy glue. :)

      @@ericcopeman7882 I agree. There are many variations on the golf swing and beware the teacher who says his/her way is the "right" way. However I think it's fair to say that touring pros tend to have a larger big muscle component in their swing than the average recreational golfer, and that's reflected in more active body rotation to generate more speed. Virtually all the top pros have their hips very open at impact. That is difficult for many recreational golfers to do - requires flexibility and puts more stress on the body. Also, coordinating body rotation to accelerate arms isn't straightforward and requires skill and practice. This is why Harrington, Malaska, Rinker and others propose letting the body move in response to the arms/wrists/hands, as the better swing for most recreational golfers.
      That swing won't win any long drive contests but as Harrington points out, if you use more hands/wrists than most of us normally do, you can hit the ball a surprisingly long distance with a simple swing that doesn't put much demand on the body.

    No joke this video and his other one on the shoulders and torso has just lead to the best round of golf I’ve played all season.
    Paddy your videos are incredible, they’re short but incredibly detailed and this leads to them being easy to remember and internalise. They’ve genuinely made a material difference to my game.
    Thank you

    I used to swing with no wrist hinge, I made a conscious effort to work on it and man did it make a difference...so much more power, club shallows more naturally...

    I started playing in Texas 65 years ago and the emphasis back then was to eliminate wrist action for more control, but this stuff from Paddy is pure golf - with no wrists you may as well be a cigar-store Indian. Bobby Jones wrote that the correct feeling is to "free-wheel" though the ball, allowing the wrists complete freedom. Great video here!!!

      yeah man but the hands get involved too much and screw up the tempo in many players....
