Chromecast Review | Can A $35 Device Be That Good?

  • Let's take a look at the Google Chromecast (3rd Gen) that turns any TV into a smart TV. The price is awesome, but do the features pack the punch we hope for? Let's dive in.
    ----------
    See our picks for BEST STREAMING DEVICES here:
    www.reviews.org/tv-service/be...
    ----------
    Chromecast price: $35
    Resolution: 1080p, no 4K (on the 3rd Gen)
    Chromecast Ultra Price: $70
    Resolution: 4K
    Includes Ethernet port (On the power supply)
    Now that Amazon and Google have decided to share their toys again, we’re getting an Amazon Prime app on the Chromecast. So does that make it any more worth it?
    So much changes in streaming...but not with the Chromecast 3rd Gen, released in 2018. It's just a juiced up version of previous Chromecasts, but is still a solid media player if you can get around one thing - there's no remote. Your device is your remote. I'll explain.
    Chromecast user experience:
    - Your phone/tablet/computer is your remote. For some, this will be wildly off-putting; for others, it’s freeing
    - Just connect to wifi and you’re off to the races
    - Look for the cast icon on your device to "cast" whatever it is you want to view onto your TV
    - So the question I had, and a lot of people have, I think, is what role your phone is actually playing in this? Don’t worry, your phone is basically just a remote. You can still text, tweet, or use your phone for calls while it's casting something. Casting doesn't mean that your screen is mirrored and everyone will see what you're using your phone for. It's a cool technology that still allows you to use your phone like normal, while it broadcasts something else onto your TV.
    One feature I love is the screen mirroring. This is different from the aforementioned casting. You can mirror exactly what's on your device if you want and turn your TV into a huge computer monitor for a presentation, to collaborate on a project, etc. Apple TVs have this feature, but Chromecast is a lot cheaper and makes it so easy.
    What content, or apps, are available on Chromecast?
    It has lots of content. But compared to what?
    I pinned it against Roku because, well, I love Roku and wanted to see if the Chromecast had similar apps. Here's a list of the top 10 apps on Roku (check our vid of that here -- • Top 10 Free Channels o... ). Well, Chromecast has 8/10 of those apps.
    TH-cam - yes
    Pluto TV - yes
    Tubi - yes
    NewsOn - NO
    The Roku Channel - NO
    Kanopy (connects to your public library) - yes
    PBS or PBS Kids - yes
    Sony Crackle - yes
    The CW - yes
    Comedy Central and/or Adult Swim - yes
    Stadium (for the sports fans) - yes
    Obviously no Roku Channel, and no support for NewsOn, but 8/10 ain’t bad. The blaring omission used to be Amazon Prime. But that's no longer an issue.
    Chromecast pushes you toward renting or buying content via Google Play. But since both are Google products, that makes sense. I was surprised, though, at how well the app works on iPhones. No different from Android phones.
    THE VERDICT:
    - If you like casual gaming integrated, Amazon Fire and Apple TV are better
    - If you’re a more serious gamer, the Nvidia Shield is better
    - If you want the most streaming apps and a brand-agnostic search experience, Roku is better.
    But for $35 and the ability to cast, screen mirror, and turn your normal TV into a smart TV, this thing is awesome. Also, if you use a Google Home or Google Home Mini, there are a lot of integrations. You can see more of those in this video - • Top 3 Tips for Chromec...

    I have to have a remote. I tried a chromecast when they first came out but I like having the feel of real buttons and not having to look at a screen especially at night when I can just feel for the button I want to push.

    Thanks for your great videos. I just bought a Sony smart TV that has built in Chromecast. What is the way to connect with my Android tablet with this built in Chromecast? Next would I still be able to use our TV remotes if the Chromecast? Would the remotes interfere with the Chromecast? I am looking forward to your videos in the future.

    I had an original chromcast for years that I haven’t used. Then one day I wanted to start mirroring my gameplay from my pc laptop to my tv. I quickly leaned that my old chromcast could mirror my entire desktop, a feature that had been added since I last used it.

    Till yesterday my google Chromecast 3 device worked properly. But, today it is not working properly. Only screen casting from You Tube and Disney hotstar is working. But, screen mirroring is not working. If I click cast screen, a note will come, there I will click start mirroring. But, no action found. Home name is Family room, under this Family room "Play music" in green colour is appearing. after clicking Family room cast my screen will come. After clicking this, cast to mirror device will come. After this, if I click cast screen, screen mirroring will not work. It stands in same stage. What is the problem? Only Casting from you tube and Disney hotstar is working. I feel Google Chromecast device is partially out of order. Please suggest early.

    If you plug Chromecast into an HDMI monitor, does audio come from your phone or does it pair with a Bluetooth speaker directly?

    • @PJBrunet
      @PJBrunet 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Truth Never Lies most monitors have no audio, so you would need an HDMI splitter to split off the audio, and the audio splitter will probably cost more than the Chromecast itself. Seems like there must be a better way, perhaps some kind of daisychain from Chromecast to speaker to monitor, but when I research that potential solution, I instead get "Chromecast Music" solutions and "HDMI Arc" nonsense. Maybe somebody invents a speaker that has Chromecast embedded (and/or HDMI 'video in' port) that also plays 'video out' through HDMI (to a monitor) that's something I would spend ~$70 for because it's cheaper than a rat's nest of adapters/wires. Whoever builds it, send me a free one to try :-) Maybe Sony already has this capability? I'm not sure. Make it a 'sound bar' with an option to wire in some classic bookshelf speakers because IMO Bluetooth still sounds like garbage, am I wrong?

    • @tamarasthornton
      @tamarasthornton 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Use the Localcast app with it. You can send the sound to bluetooth.

    • @amsburiro
      @amsburiro 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Truth Never Lies You can cast your video to None Audio Monitor or TV via chromecast and simultaneously you can connect your Mobile to Bluetooth Audio Speakers which can be buy easily less than $5 to $10, So your video will be on Monitor and Audio will be on Bluetooth Speakers.

      It depends on how old your devices are. When I switched to yttv I had the newest AppleTV and older out dated AppleTV. With The newer one I can download which apps I want, older version if it’s not there you will NOT be watching it. So I can not watch it on my old devise. TH-cam TV is a newer app and can not be used with original TH-cam app.
      I even tried HuluTV and even though it uses the same app it still would not work on the older devices.

    Is there no way to set up Chromecast to work with mobile data, rather than a home router? Without using 2 phones? I don't have a router. I only use my unlimited mobile data, I'm cheap. This seems like a ridiculous limitation if you can't set it up using mobile data.

    • @frankpeter9145
      @frankpeter9145 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you can, but for the initial setup you will need a second phone. There is a method to the madness, and the following steps worked for me. This was solved by Richard Kilmer and you can thank him on his TH-cam channel.
      You will need a second phone (from a family member or friend) which becomes a router and must have internet data.
      Turn on mobile hotspot and internet data of the borrowed phone and switch your wifi on and connect to that hotspot.
      Press the reset button on the Google Chromecast device and when completed, go to your phone and setup the device through the app.
      When successfully setup, disconnect wifi link from the borrowed phone and switch of their mobile hotspot. On your phone, go to 'mobile hotspot and tethering' and rename the device name and password as per the borrowed devices hotspot name and password. Also, I turned on wifi sharing.
      Switch on your mobile data and your mobile hotspot then open the app and cast to your tv screen or monitor. From now on you just use your phone to stream to your Google Chromecast device.
      Hope that helps, Good luck.

It seems all the major devices now require a microphone so they can snoop on you. This whole industry is a mess and not what we were supposed to get 20 years ago when planned.
