      I literally just caught this myself :D
      Everything USB is at minimum 5 volts to prevent overvolting (amperage amount doesn't matter as much), devices like MacBooks that use a higher voltage have some pretty nifty tech where the device first 'talks' to the charger to determine that it is actually safe to supply the full 9v/12v/ whatever the device wants

    Important to note that even though the bandwidth wasn't particularly higher with ethernet the ping was significantly better with over 20% improvement. Would recommend using it in case you plan to stream games through a service like stadia (which can be sideloaded right now and should launch shortly)

    This is an extremely detailed and helpful video. My set up is a Tivo Stream 4K (very similar to CWGTV) with an extra USB-C port. It gets power from a micro USB port. My hub is an ESHOWEE with one ethernet, one HDMI, one SD card, one micro SD Card, one USB-C Power delivery and two USB 3 ports. I connected the hub to the USB-C port of the device. I tried a 32GB SD card a 16GB micro SD card and two USB flash drives, a 32GB Sandisk and an old 8GB Corsair. Like Tech with Brett, I can confirm that the TS4K recognized both flash drives and didn't recognize any of the SD and micro SD cards. I didn't try the ethernet port or any hard drives.
    The most iteresting part of this video, besides what works and what doesn't, was the power supplies. I tried two power bricks the weakest one was an 18 watt, and everything worked fine. Maybe the TS4K requires less power from the hub because it uses its own power adapter, so a regular 10 watt power brick might work, but I can't confirm this because I didn't try it.
    Thanks again for such a nice video.

    @brett at 2:22 you say the brick is 5 amps and 1.5 volts. Its 5 volts and 1.5 amps. You can use any brick that outputs 5 Volts. So amperage will needs to be high enough to deliver enough power. Amperage will adjust it selfs to the needs of the device. If you were to connect a 10 Volts brick you would frie the chromecast. I think most usb power bricks have a 5 volt output but i would check it anyways before hooking it up. You dont want to burn down your house ;)

    Likely your external storage is formatted as NTFS but for Chromecast needs to be formatted as exfat. USB thumb drives are usually formatted in fat32 or exfat automatically for compatibility, but larger drives tend to get formatted as NTFS to better support the larger size. If you take those drives back into Windows and reformat them as exfat they should show up in your Chromecast and then be useable for media payback or internal device storage.

    • @TechWithBrett
      @TechWithBrett  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for the tip! Any disadvantage of formating those to Exfat?

    • @edgeman04
      @edgeman04 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@TechWithBrett honestly I couldn't say with certainty. I don't think the Chromecast OS would take advantage of anything NTFS offers anyways. ExFAT is just a way to get around the size limitation of FAT32 is my understanding. So other than that limitation it functions most for compatibility over performance or security.
      I've been using ExFAT on a large SSD with my Nvidia Shield and haven't seen any issues whatsoever.

    • @jimtran93

  • @kuchesezik
    @kuchesezik 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    the reason the card and drives aren’t showing is because of file system compatibility.
    the sdxc card and t7 ssd are pre-formatted in exfat and the hard drive is probably ntfs.
    most usb thumb drives are pre-formatted to fat32 which is limited in some ways but has the most compatibility.
    android phones usually support exfat drives natively but it recently came to my attention that the google pixel phone has this capability intentionally disabled, probably because google wants to push its paid subscription cloud storage service which is noted with the closing of the free google photos storage, (the reason for me to test that).
    this is most likely also the case with the chromecast and you might be able to get around it by re-formatting the drives to fat32, although you should first note its limitations and would need to temporarily offload any files on the drive that you don’t want to delete.

    At 2.4 A at 5 V the maximum output is 12 Watts ,so it doesn't matter if it's USB C or not.The higher wattage and voltage is for a charging Protocol where faster charging times are achieved by putting higher voltage at lower Amps that's creates less heat and requiring the same wire gauge as used by most smart phones,some computers and some batteries.

    • @ajv7835

      Random question: Should it matter if USB C Hub has 100w or 87w USB C PD? Isn't the cable's amperage (3A or higher) or the power brick more important? I'm kinda confused about that... Why does the USB C hub have to support 100w PD?

    • @justinmaxwell4199
      @justinmaxwell4199 ปีที่แล้ว

      Heat is the reason. If the hub is inline with a 100w device. Then the hub must be capable of managing the heat generated from an amperage draw that high.

    Reason why the Duo video doesn’t look good on the TV is because your TV is likely a 4K while your front facing camera on your phone may not be able to capture video at that resolution. Using the rear facing camera that’s capable of recording video at 4K may work, though actual video quality may depend on video compression used by Duo.

    If you aren't getting great speeds from the gig ethernet cable, its a flaw in the USB hub. Perhaps its not creating a separate subnet so it drops to the lowest denominator (100mb probably) for all devices. (this is the equivalent of using an ethernet hub vs an ethernet switch) There are other videos where different USB hubs were able to deliver way faster speeds than what you got from your test. If you have a choice between a cable or wireless and there aren't any enough differences between the two to make a difference, the cable is the less prone to error and is the best choice.

    Thanks Brett for the great tips and TechDoctorUK (who I'm also subscribed to) as well! You guys make it easy to get the most out of your Chromecast TV. I wish I hadn't cheaped out initially and tried the UTechSmart hub (which was $20 CDN cheaper) which kept losing ethernet connection even with the Anker 45w PD. I returned it today and when I got back, the Amazon package with the Anker hub you recommended was sitting by my door waiting for me. LOL
    Now if Google would just fix the damn intermittent audio dropouts on surround sound! Anyone else experience this?

      @@TechWithBrett Hi. I have been trying to do video calls on my chromecast with google tv, via google duo, but have been facing some issues.
      The microphone on the chromecast remote doesn't work i.e. others can't hear me during call but I can hear them. I have allowed the mic permissions for the app and even though the mic works flawlessly with google assistant, it doesn't work with Duo. I even unplugged my webcam, restarted the device and the tried to do just some voice calls but still same result, the mic on the remote doesn't work.
      I have searched on Google and some answers came up saying that you can't use your remote mic for video calls, but then I see TH-camrs like you having no problems whatsoever.
      If you can help that would be awesome!
      Plus my webcam's video quality is a bit blurry compared to when I connect it to my PC.

      Do all the Chromecast models still allow anyone on the same network to basically "jump into" anything you're casting and watch whatever you're watching? And also control from their phone anything through the casted device? I couldn't believe that was possible and that they weren't password protected somehow.

    Amazing! How did you manage to connect a SD Card. My Chromecast only shows a message similar to "SD Card has been correctly removed" even when it is still plugged. Another problem I had is that I selected my pendrive as removable (in order to conect it to pc and CCGTV) but now google TV apps only have reading permission, not writing.

    • @Retroaria

      This is the limitation, this video have 1 year. After few month I tried and no more works. I think the Chromecast firmware update remove the SD card and USB external connection. Now is very very difficult to get access to external sd or USB flasdrives. 1 in 20 is your chance after reset chromecast. Even if you get access After reset or simply restart the TV your connection can be lost. "Congratulations" to Google
