Very nice at the price !
I'd be tempted to pick one up and run around 500 pellets through it to bed it in. In my experience, brand new budget guns are rarely at their best right out of the box so I'd be willing to bet it can shoot tighter groups once it's settled down and with the right pellet.

Nice gun Andy I’ve ben shooting over sixty five years and it’s nice to see a gun made for the youngsters .I started with an Original mos 15 which I still have in first class condition and for fun I get it in the garden and have a pop at a tin can and at seventy years it still gives me a big smile on my face .
Mind you anything that goes bang makes me smile from a Diana pop out to my BSA 308 or a 17 hornet and lots in between keep up the good work and get all the kids you can involved as you can .

Cracking little springer and what more is needed for knocking over some tin cans in a back garden and I’m sure any new young shooter will be head over heals receiving one of these for their introduction into our sport. These guns are the stepping stones for all young shooters and not overpriced and just set at the right power level which is all that’s needed to get them going and enjoying the fun that we all enjoy.

You make a good point about encouraging the girls to shoot, Mine are all in their fifties now but they always like a go on my garden range at 29 yards, and they are good shots.
So are their daughters too, all around their 30s but when they were younger , teens , the interest was there too but I'd bring the range down to about 20 yards .
Can't wait for the great granddaughters to start in about ten years. They like the BSA Meteor as its so light , but if I get one out the daystates are their pick.Airsporters and suchlike are too heavy for them unfortunately .
Point is they are very good with open sights as well, and consider it more of a challenge, with their keen eyesight. Fair review the 18.9 inch barreled Hamerli 👍

I coached for a few years, There were a lot of the young ladies who were a consistently better shot than me! They were great at taking in, and putting to use, all the information we could give them, far better than I often was at taking my own advice. You're right in what you say about holding the barrel - your great work here could well be someone's introduction to shooting, so show them good practice from the start.

It's a fabulous thing to see that Hammerli, who makes so many fine but expensive air arms, is thoughtfully producing such a well thought-out affordable rifle for a starter gun. As such, however, I wonder if it is a Chinese subcontracted job? I'll bet modern economics preclude a German origin, though you'll still get German design. This doesn't mean such rifles are no good - but it does make family shooting possible (affordable). Thanks Andy, for another useful, well thought-out review.

I've just bought a Hatsan 900x and was disappointed with it initially until I did quite a bit of work to it even though it only cost £89. As my rifle is used for 16 yrd plinking this looks pretty decent!
It would be nice to see Andy using RWS Hobby's in the cheaper springers.

    Great review!
I got a few years back a used inexpensive Ruger X5 (550fps or so) model for free. While sighting in both the open sights and the scope (my personal first shots with it), it proved itself to be a pretty accurate starter rifle. Got very good groups with it. Therefore I bet this Hammerli will turn outbto be a great one.

My club, like so many, is suffering from a lack of younger people coming into the sport. We have a smaller course set out, mainly for open sights, but it would be ideal for a beginner, using the Hammerli 400. Once an interest is gained, they might well decide that an upgrade is desirable, in order to shoot the main f.t. course. How about promoting the clubs Andy, to promote safe shooting and stop the kids from becoming bored and targeting the wildlife?? 🤔

@@simonnoble7589 Nice to hear you doing better again. We're all good here. Nice sunny weather too atm - although a small chilly breeze also can be felt.
This rifle seems nice. I've liked the starter break-barrels that I've gotten to try out. I once got for free a Ruger X5, which shoots at only 550fps or so - but it proved itself to be quite accurate while I sighted in both it's open sights and it's scope. I think the powerlessness of it kinda helps with the accuracy a bit. My 1000fps rated Crosman Phantom .177 on the other hand has a pretty good kick to it and is not as easy going as the Ruger.. So I bet this Hammerli is a great starter air rifle.
