- So today I'm out on a Yamaha XJ600S Diversion Test Ride, as I've been looking for a lightweight winter bike, so far I'm quite pleased with the results.

Now I've just bought one of these on Friday as my first big bike after passing my test. I love it and it does everything I need it to.

Just bought one of these after looking at your video, moved down from a 1300 pan. Only done about 3 miles, but I think I already love it. Everything is so easy to get to. Maintenance is a doddle. I'll report back when I get it taxed and insured.
Nice to hear Chris, I don't have mine anymore but I did love the bike whilst I owned it, I agree they are very easy to work on and surprisingly quick for what it is, hope it gives you many untroubled miles buddy, RS.

I have a red one with the stock double Exhaust in Chrome. It is a Beauty. I love her so much. Perfect Beginner Bike that comes so cheap.

These bikes are very good to buy iv had mine for 6 years, mine is xj600s diversion 1997 original spec no mods runs like a dream.
I don't have mine anymore, but I agree they are a great bike, I think the only thing mine had was the four into one exhaust added, other than that it was totally standard, RSM8.
Those are great old bikes. Back in the '90s they were hugely popular here in the States. Over here we call that bike the Seca. It's very nice to see a well-preserved example.

Hi Skeggy. Yes, it does take a while to adjust from a cruiser. After many years on a Midnight Star I bought (due to weakening joints and muscles!) a Suzuki SV650. At first, I thought I'd made a big mistake. That riding position! The revving! The hard seat! One month later, I'm getting used to the riding position and revs but I'll never get used to that wooden seat. Because it is so small and light, it feels a bit unsubstantial at times, but it does handle really well.
I'm sure with more miles you'll get used to the Diversion - I think the seat's a lot more comfy than my SV.

Cheers buddy, I fear you are more than likely correct, although I had it for two and a half years but never really put miles on her, yeah the seat on the diversion was definitely comfier than the sv650, lol, I'm afraid I traded it in for a 2009 Royal Enfield Bullet 500 EFI which I must say is absolutely beautiful and very comfortable to ride, for me it was the bent over riding position that didn't suit my knackered back, Many thanks buddy and RS.
I just bought an 1992 with 95,000 klm's on her. Still strong. They have a great riding position, tailor made for me. :)

Cheers Sean, yeah I must say when I had this one it never let me down I was the one to let it down by allowing the battery to go flat by riding the other bikes too much, must remember to share the riding lol, RSM8.

that is a beautiful example, I have naked one as my first bike, on my log book mine said blue, but it had original black.

I had one of these. Commuted 70 miles a day, let me down only once due to a corroded fuse. A bit of tappet rattle when cold and, as you say, a bit vibey. Only changed it, for it's 900cc brother, as I was struggling to keep up with mates on 1000+ bikes. I would definitely have another as a commuter/winter hack. Cheers
+Professor Cheers buddy, yeah I must admit it seems to be a good choice winter hack wise, I thought about the 900 but it had to be something I could lift on my own if necessary, hope it's not though, lol, don't blame you for changing it's not fun playing catch up all the time, RSM8.
I had one years ago was a great little bike, seems like they all suffer from clunky/rattly gearbox and starter motors can be a problem but easy enough to swap out yourself. Other than that they make a great first bike or winter commuter, handling is predictable and forgiving and acceleration is okay but you're never going to get a rush from it but that's not what this kind of bike is aimed at, weather protection is reasonable and riding position is comfortable (once you get used to it) they are reliable bikes and the engines seem to go on and on, good thing is you can pick these up quite cheaply and spares are easy to get hold of and cheap.
+andy cleary Thanks buddy, yeah I did find the gearbox a bit clunky but to be fair I think a lot of Yamaha's do, having said that it's more 1st & 2nd the rest are reasonably smooth, before i buy any bike these days I always pop online to see what and how available parts are, I've found the seat to be a lot comfier than I thought it would be, so I bought it when I got back to the bike shop, and left being more than happy with my little winter bike, cheers Andy RSM8.

Nice, I've just purchased a brand new oem screen for it as the one on it had been cut down and sprayed black by the previous owner, RSM8.
Mine's front fairing was battered because of a fall of previous owner so I converted to naked,... let's see what MOT thinks about it.
should be fine buddy, so long as everything works and there are no sharp edges the MOT guy wont be bothered,

Sounds about right to me Skeggy, can't be too much difference between it and my hornet rev-wise. I usually change around 4.5-5k revs. Mine gets quite vibey around 65-70ish. I find myself looking for the 7th gear sometimes too hehe
+Bex88 Yeah I did some research when I got back, should have done it before I left really, it's 598cc and the revs are abut right, seems strange running out of gears with six of em, my cruisers only got five, kept forgetting that my cruiser is 700cc more though, no wonder it didn't perform as I expected, lol, mind you having said that I was quite impressed for a 1992 bike, thanks and RSS.
LOL - laughing at your question re the revs. When I rode BigKev's cruiser it took me a while to realise it had (or even needed) more gears than just first :)
Being on the 500 twin 50Mph is about 4000rpm, but the limiter kicks in at 9000. Having the 4 pot screamer it must be weird revving up over 10000!!

A very good buy indeed, I bought a XJ 600 Diversion 1993, about 6 years ago, and to this days it never leave me on the road, and I drive it every days of the week, noisy engine but truthful.
I'm glad I don't have to put up with rain & snow in the winter. I don't think I'd be able to go down to such a smaller cc bike unless it's a dual sport for off roading
+Robert Robb Thanks Robert, we don't get too much snow normally and I've never considered a winter bike as such, but the last 2 winters haven't been kind to the cruiser, so I thought why not, I've looked at dual sports and adventure bikes but I have to be careful with a knackered back and leg, as they're all so tall, cheers bro RSM8.
And plenty of cable length if you feel the need to fit handlebar risers

Nicely discussed vid Skeggy! It doesn't really suit you but would certainly be an excellent winter bike and looks in superb condition!

very nice bike. I have a 1982 Yamaha xj650 Maxim that is my favorite ride. I like to ride it better than my Harleys. The RPM you stated is about for that motor. The good thing about it is got to 9500 rpm redline
+dheller777 Thanks bud, do you know if the XJ650 is the same engine, I looked at a XJ650 but it turned out to be a real high miler and not in very good condition at all, RSM8.
+Skeggy Cruiser I believe is much the same engine as I have in my 1982 model. I am sure they have made improvements over the years. I can tell you the engine is very strong. I have seen several with over 30,000 miles on them that are still running. Mine has about 26,000 and still pulls strong. Ride safe brother.
It's my first bike. Got a a xj 600s 1994. As I have only the second biggest motorcycle license (in Germany it's called a2), it's limited to 48hp. Compared to other 48hp bikes, it's pretty fast too. And yep, it vibrates from 3,5-4,5k. But before and after that it's smooth. Also that's normal for this series. All in all I think it's a cheap and good beginner bike.
It's a great bike, so I'm assuming you have to have it restricted to 48bhp then, I think it's about 61bhp as standard, so I bet your only losing the equivalent of a 125cc motorcycle, still pretty nippy and very easy at slicing through traffic, RSM8.
Yeah I think there are 3 versions. 50 HP, 51HP and 61 HP. I recently did 180 km/h on the autobahn and for the city it's all u can ask for. You can beat 98% of all cars on the streets :D

put rubber innertube from a bicycle at the fairing mounts for vibration control cuz it will drive you nuts. carburator synchronization and valve adjustments are crucial for these bikes. awsome bike that can be modded like crazy ...check out some cafe racer mods for some ideas..it doesn't take any comfort away and looks bad ass have fun
Can't go wrong with a Yamaha. That looks like a nice short distance bike. I think my back would protest after a few hours. I don't know if anyone makes a forward control kit for that one or not. Good luck.

Looks an ideal winter or town bike to me. It's been kept nice and clean and seems to have enough power to keep away from those annoying tail-gaiters! lol ;)

It'll never set the world alight but they were never meant to....
A safe proven motorcycle with a decent spread of power and with a regular hosing down will prove to be a good winter bike but also a handy back up tool for when ya main bike is off road for whatever reason. .
As you know buddy I have the pre divvy xj 600 and use it not only as a work tool but it's very useful anywhere when I can't be arsed to get the 12 out of the cave..
One thing about yammys is that around this sort of era if neglected salt and shite can quickly tarnish the alloy parts and brakes will soon seize up....
so the hose and a decent wash down....with oils and lubes is a must thru the shite months. .....

+WEGGY zx12r Thanks Weggy, as far as my backs concerned, I've always said, "I'm gunna suffer tomorrow for that" so long as I can ride it the majority of the time through the winter I'll be happy, and to be honest buddy I was spurred on by the pictures of your Pre Divvy on facebook, yeah i've always done the same hosed em of and plenty of lube, but it's not fair to keep using the cruiser through the salty winters so, when I got back after the test ride I bought it, shhhh spoiler alert, lol, mind you if we have a mild winter i'll still be out on Ebony, cheers bro RSM8.

Its right no the mark mate, there very viby around 3.8-4.5 vers. If you have to bend to much mate you can get a set of 35mm lifters for the bars like i have in mine and it works well. If you get it then i can sure help you with any teck help you need. good looking bike for its age, mine is a little younger then that one "J" 1992.

Looks like a minter. Never tried one - but I colleague has one and I think it's his only transport. It's there in all weathers !

Love my Divi. having not not ridden for many years and back on the roard bought one cheap and got got it back to good enough. however vibarates at about 55 mph.... so avoid that speed at all times ... higher or lower :)
Hi Nick, sorry for the late reply, yes the Divi is a great bike, getting hard to find a good one these days now, I got rid of mine after a couple of years, traded it in for a RE Bullet, can't keep em all eh! yes 50mph or 60mph fine but agree avoid the vibes at 55mph, mine also did it at about 33mph i'd be happier changing up, cheers and RSMF.

the sprocket gearing has been changed they usually rev alot less at hiway speeds.probably went down a tooth at the front and maybe up at the back...on average down 1 tooth at the front is roughly the same as adding three teeth at the rear...looks like your mate did both as the diversion is pretty slow out of the box and has around 60 hp at the crank gear it back up for some serious miles per gallon keep the rubber down brother and always watch out for other drivers who don't deserve to be on the road..

I'm really sorry for not noticing you comment until now, youtube doesn't always tell me I have a comment and it's impossible to go through every video weekly to see if there are new ones, as for your question if it's still valid, assuming your say 6'3" with boots on then I would say yes you would be fine with this bike, I'm 6'1" with boots and it was absolutely fine with a tad to spare, The bike isn't very heavy and handles great at any speed, hope this helps buddy, RSM8.
What oil do you recomend? I have an xj600s 1995
I used 10w-40 semi synthetic with a highflow oil filter, although mine was the 1992 model it's the same engine, I've traded the bike in now, wish we were able to keep all the bikes I've had but just not enough room or money, lol, hope this helps RSM8.
Is that going to be comfortable riding position for your back? Looks a good bike for only 21k miles

Good looking bike mate. Go for ergonomics rather than looks, the mirrors are good I reckon. I think if we have a dry winter you might get bored of the power it delivers so maybe if there's a bigger motor out there, might be worth a gander.

A winter bike!? I’m considering an XJ600 for my main bike!
I used to have the bigger brother XJ900 Diversion, I found it a bit too heavy and tall for me though, that’s the problem when you’ve only got a 29ins leg.
Yes I imagine that a 29" inside leg could be a problem on some bikes, mines 32" so not ever really been a problem on any bike, it would make a great bike for all year, it was that in my case as my main bike is a cruiser with lots of chrome I was looking for something without any so it wasn't such a bind to clean in the winter months, the only problem was every time I went the the shed to get a bike out to ride I got on the cruiser as I found it more comfortable for my knackered old back, even the XJ600 is quite a tall bike but my wife loved riding it,
she's a 30" inside leg, RSM8.
I am UK have one in green same exhaust. 1993 .. had it 8 yrs same battery. Done 34k miles I done five. Don't start that well after a couple of weeks .. don't vibrate does rattle from the clutch. Sits at 80+90 better than 50. ....
How i could get a front fairing?
Any parts I needed I bought from Ebay second hand but normally good, there are a few on at the moment but it depends on what year you need, also don't forget if you haven't got the framework to hang it on you'll need to buy that separately, RSM8.
looks o'reet that skeggy,long as it does what you need and is reliable then all good ay....as for the leanibg forward a bit too much,would a set of risers not help out with that at all.you planning on keeping her a few year then bro?....just store her through the summer when the big-lass comes out to play?anyow ride safe my friend..Bizz

Just got a 1994 one,I know what you mean about high revs at low speed,I was desperately trying to find another gear,might try smaller rear cog!!
I'm sort of getting used to it now, but the bike is actually up for sale as I only wanted it as a winter bike, only problem was 9 times out of 10 I still went out on my XVS1300, lol, Thanks and RSM8.
I got my one because I thought of giving up bikes,just wanted a cheap hack to plod along with,lots of years on bigger "nicer" metal!

Hi, I'm 6 foot tall with a 32" inside leg and fit just fine I would say at 6'2" you should be fine so long as you not anymore than a 34" inside leg, hope this helps, thanks & RSMF.
thats a pretty nice bike, thing to remember .. this is a 600 so it will be a bit more windy than the 1300 .. the 1300 will be in 4th gear at 50mph as the gears are a bit tall . I usually dont get to 5th till about 60 .. this is mph .. so the 600 will be a bit rely in the higher rpm .. its something to get used to .. A very nice looking bike though all the same .
+dbest1a Vlogs yeah it's not a bad looking machine really, I think the last 600 I owned was a BSA, lol, I think i've just had too many years listening to a bigger cruiser engine, I've got to admit though I was quite pleased how it picks up when you give it some for a 600, still a bit sluggish compared to the beast, lol, cheers bro RSM8.

The 1300s redline is 6300 bro... Not 4k ... N with the 1300s tall gear it can hang around with most bikes and cruisers ...
wow that is immaculate - for a winter bike would u not want a bike with a chunky screen in front for wind protection or I guess grab an aftermarket screen for it?

Would you recommend one off these as first big bike just passed my test and I'm going to look at one next week, the only issue is it has 50k miles but I've heard that these bikes are bulletproof. Any advice would be appreciated
Yes buddy I would say so, mines only done 21000 and is in great condition, it's for sale now but I want £850 for it, just lowered the price from £950 because of the time of year and people not having so much money, but if you've got a good one in mind good luck, don't forget to check the usual things like no play in headstock bearings and swingarm, RSM8.
Skeggy Cruiser thanks for the reply it looks in extremely good condition the miles is really the only thing putting me off, the person has it up for £1000 it's year 2000 just trying to do as much research as possible before I decide, finding a first 600 isn't as easy as I thought
mark hill oh yea bro. i have a 94 xj600s and i literally riding in the rain today and i shit you not you can gun it thru a tight corner and be fine. i have a shinko SR741 rear tire and battlax 071 (i think) on the front. i love this bike
pretty basic bike have the engine checked out at a shop valve adjust is at 20 k miles. if she runs good buy it as all the other work is super basic and easy.super sports are a nightmare to work on as in the late 90's they started doing mass or weight centralization to keep the majority of the weight centralized for superior handling.fork revalves are pretty easy and some companies like works performance in USA will still build you a rear shock.remember your weight and kind of riding you do.tires are kinda bad to find at 18 inches though.should be a great 1st big bike but if you have the money and you arent going flat out alot look at the honda grom as it's alot of fun and or a honda cbr 300 single.remember everyone is trying to kill you out on the road. any more questions i'm at jonnysocko1@hotmail.com P.S. been riding since aged 5 and am 52 now so i will help with any questions you may have.....keep the rubber down brother...John
If you want a bike to drive conformable, not a sports one, or a racing one, it's the ideal bike, she "swings" a bit in curves, but you'll adapt to her easily.
A very good bike. 50mph @ 4000rpm is okay. You should get about 70/75mpg.
+Waltham Hillingdon Cheers Buddy, wow 70/75mpg would be great that's a good 20/25mpg more than I get from the XVS1300 mind you that's twice as heavy and the engines twice the size, lol, I suppose I should think before typing, lol, RSM8.
Looks better than kawasaki er 500,which has drum brakes at the rear.And in terms of reliability,I guess is about the same,but maybe is a little expensive to maintain because XJ has 4 carbureteurs.What do you think?
Personally I prefer the XJ600 I took my test on the ER500 and wasn't that impressed, I had bought this XJ600 and it never let me down was more than powerful enough and the four carbs never gave me any trouble, so for me it would be the XJ everytime, sorry for the late reply, RSMF

Nice one, I don't think you'll be disappointed to be fare, they are a great bike and quite reliable if used regularly, RSM8.
I used to drive a forklift at baby food factory and brakes would deliver meat there, all the other drivers would run away as the brakes drivers could barely speak a word of english and were really hard work to deal with!

my 75000 mile 99 reg xj600N its usually around 4500- 5000 rpm at 50 and roughly 5500 at 70. although i still try and go for that imaginary 7th gear. I have the same exhaust and the only thing that bugs me is the mount from the missing can sticks out like a sore thumb. I do prefer the twin disks on mine along with the choke in a more logical position (although saying thative never had to use it thus far)
+steven bradley 75000 good miles then bud, yeah that imaginary last gear we all try to find eh! lol, I swear if they had 15 gears we still wouldn't be happy when we're shifting, lol, yeah the exhausts pretty sweet really and not cheap when new, this one looks really strange as without the exhaust in the way the centre stand kicker seems to stick out a mile, lol, I noticed this one was single disc but to be honest I never even looked at the choke, cheers bud RSM8.
+Skeggy Cruiser 1992s are single front disks, dont know why as two look better lol. choke should be on the carbs, just pull it out and push it in job.

+Skeggy Cruiser The centre stand lifter thing. is a pain in fact the previous owner cut it down as it has a habit of scraping the floor or large vehicles when filtering. You need too keep your eye out for the famous clutch basket rattle . It doesn't do any harm but my god is it annoying. The gearbox is a bit clunky, and like dave said it's a bit vibey at low revs Other than that it is an amazingly comfy mile cruncher (although coming from a cruiser.....) and it just goes on forever. Mines an. Ex courier bike and still going strong. In fact I saw one in London on the day I picked it up with 111000 miles on it. And it was still as sweet as a nut mechanically although a mess cosmetically.

My wife reckons that the Diversion is the classic middleweight commuter bike, it'll go to the moon and back with no problem. The missus has spoken! ;o)

I just buy one, friend fix carberateur and now drive excellent. I like the motor but I dont like it as high way motor, it is easy able to do so but it ill cost much of Its power.
Its max is actually 7-8 rpm and absolutely not 11 but u ill get a motor which cant break so we ill see them for maybe another 10 years driving our roads and another 20 years in low income country’s xD
I've got rid of the bike now and just keeping with my Royal enfield and the new Yamaha XV1900A Midnight Star, enjoyed the diversion whilst I had it but alas no more room in the mancave for another bike so had to go, Thanks & RSMF.
Skeggy Cruiser Okee thats a big one ;). Im thinking about buying 450-700 adventure or allround type of thing. Not sure yet but I first go ride this one for another while. I never use Its top speed actually once I drove 150kmph but is not my thing to speed it.
Those very heavy bikes arent something for me, Im 68kg so i allready seem small on This bike xD.
Its very relieble motor. Mine did 134.000km (more then clock) and many thing original.
I think about buy new Yamaha tenere 700 but 10.5K euro is lot of money for me idunno if i feel confortable driving that amount of money through muddy roads :s

I've an XJ Diversion exactly like the same colour, and I know is Dark Blue, because I went to the Yamaha dealer to by some parts after an accident, and I told him it was Green, but no, is Dark Blue. In certain sun light it like green, and others blue. It's the Yamaha's magic. LOL
@@SkeggyCruiser 2 years late but to put folks mind to rest, No its Green, You can see it on the tank in the sunshine the color scheme for diversions is odd, the blue variants of this bike look black/purple their color scheme is Dark blue with red hue on the official yamaha factory release. I bought mine recently and was worried it was nicked and resprayed, took it to a dealer who said the diversion had a very odd paint scheme almost translucent the only diversion which you know is the color on the log book is the red one. But yeah going back to this bike , get one thats had a lot of love and common modifications and you have something that will keep cars on their toes and if you dont mind keeping it down a gear you can keep up with the supersports due to that rev range. The only let down is, its an Air/oil cooled engine, an aluminium lump which has every noise you can imagine, couple that with a clutch basket rattle, a pin on the clutch basket, exhaust manifold rattle and chain rattle and things start to sound Rhythmic. Engine super reliable everything else as normal. Love my divvy and wouldnt upgrade it for anything else.
@@phayzic4039 Sorry for the late reply, only just noticed your comment, I've not got the Diversion anymore as I traded it in for a Royal Enfield Bullet 500 love it, mind you it's a totally different pace of life but around here on the east coast it's perfect down all the back lanes, I know I'm really colourblind so yeah it did always look blue to me but even the wife told me it's definitely green, lol, It's now owned by an old chap who's part of the owners club and loves & treasures it alot more than I ever would have, personally I'd be much happier if I could have kept all the bikes I've ever owned, mind you I'd need a much bigger man cave, lol, Thanks & RSM8.

I'm gonna buy one of these P reg, 1300 miles 12 months MOT and it looks immaculate. However it has a choke and it's years since I owned a vehicle with a manual choke (in fact its years since I owned a 600cc bike!) so should I anticipate any probs with this? Thanks. By the way the guy wants £1500 and I'm paying it, so I hope I'm not getting ripped off! I got £700 for my 125 so I'm happy, but just hope I'm not being blatantly had!
