Watching this at age 44 makes me realise how fucking infantile and egotistical those 'rockstars' actually are. As a teen I thought they sounded so cool and now they sound like little babies. At least that's one benefit of aging.
I mean depends the killswitch dudes were super chill but like that dude from the random band that asked the interviewer to stop…
And for that reason alone I never regret getting older and wiser. No interest in going back in time. (Unless I could go back to high school and tell my teachers off and bang the cheerleaders.)

Once I met this woman who worked as an assistant tour manager. She had worked with all the great names you can come up with and also amazing underground bands. From Eric Clapton to Therion, from Britney Spears to Dimmu Borgir. She told me that of all the artists she met in her career, Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons where by far the worst. Actually, she pledged to never work with Kiss again. That speaks volumes.
I’d be embarrassed if I had any association with KISS… I literally wouldn’t tell anyone. I would just tell people I worked with talentless a**holes that dress like clowns.
I had a relative who worked in the industry during the late 70's to mid 90's. We were talking and I asked him why so many other artists would mention KISS as an influence to them. He couldn't figure it out either. He said that every session musician and engineer thought they sucked.
I've heard this about Kiss so much from people in the music industry especially artists who grew up idolizing them, once they finally got to meet them, turned in & or tossed out their Kiss army badges/patches.
@Digital Intent I really think it was their personas/stage shows because it was just SO overthe top for the time period.
I could never make sense of it either until I analyzed it a bit more and though that had to be what it was. That and the fear they struck into the general public. But their music was never even all that great, imo.

Henry Rollins didn't know how to react to someone even smaller than him, so he went right into bully-mode against the kid.

For context, people had been endlessly talking shit to and about Black Flag for their style change during the My War album and actually every album after. Most of it specifically directed towards Henry, who wrote zero lyrics on the album, and played zero notes on the album, and at that point was pretty much a temp worker for the band. All while Greg Ginn does what Greg Ginn apparently does in every life situation and passes the buck for someone else to deal with. Kira walked away when the kid started talking bravely because she knew what was coming. Bill Stevenson was visibly physically restraining himself from going way more savage than Henry. It doesn't take the Psychic Friends Network to know that Henry wasn't and still isn't a guy that people ask smart ass idiotic questions to because he is going to immediately give the person smart ass idiotic answers. It was above his pay grade to entertain some scene clone kid's nonsense about music and bands he didn't know and never heard of, which was the thing that Henry wanted to say but was keeping his mouth shut about until the kid made a remark about it. He has since apologized for that interview and said that he isn't proud of the way he acted towards the kid but honestly, don't show up at a show preloaded with the dumbest fucking questions and dialog anyone could come up with, insult a band (and their labelmates, and multiple cities) who came there to play in a bull shit venue in a bull shit town like Dearborn with no music or art scene worth ever mentioning and people might not bang the microphone off your forehead to see if the thing sounds as empty as it looks.
TL;DR version: If you are interviewing a band the absolute dumbest fucking thing possible to do is, for example, implore the band to explain to you why you no longer sound like every other band and if the band thinks they are "selling out" by not doing so
And definitely don't do it if you don't even know any of the music from any of the bands you're talking about. Go pose in a store window if you want to be a mannequin
@@neilpatrickhairless You're 100% right. Despite being cocky and arrogant, Rollins didn't actually create any of the best Black Flag music. He was just one of many vocalists. It's Ginn's band and always has been, but Keith Morris (and Ron Reyes) contributed to the music in the early days. That's probably another reason he's such an asshole, to this kid and generally. He's really just an angry little roadie turd who shouted whatever words he was told to.
When it comes to KISS, Ace Frehley said it best: “How are you going to take yourself seriously when you’re sitting there in a superhero costume and a face full of makeup?”
Yeh that interview was awesome ! Ace and Peter made those two clowns mad, embarrassed them and stole the show. Brilliant!
It's almost as if they're not actually being serious. Gene has never been serious in his entire life. He loves to do this stuff, because it drives virgins crazy.

I wished that the kiss interview would have sparked a trollfest. Where every interviewer afterwards would have worn an iron maiden t shirt. That would have been too epic.
That had to be embarrassing for Rollins when the kid interviewing you acts tougher than you'll ever be. Rollins tried to be intimidating, but the kid didn't back down at all.

More capable brains have self awareness and a willingness to re-evaluate and change beliefs and attitudes, so I will watch future Rollins material with the new knowledge that he's aware of his previous shortcomings.

Albums like Number Of The Beast and Powerslave for example. Never was a Kiss fan, i wouldn't say they are bad, but they are pretty overrated in my opinion.
Interviewed Serj Tankian as well a few years back, he was the nicest guy ever and wouldn't stop talking.. I wasn't even able to ask all of my questions :D It was early afternoon and he just came from a walk through my city. He definitely was 100% sober, which probably helped ^^ Same with Phil and KSE
I never get tired of The Sex Pistols interview, where Steve Jones cursed at interviewer who had it coming. John Lydon (Rotten) was trying to move interview along. Loved them! KISS are Egomaniacs

I’ve never understood this mentality that some bands have like that Kiss interview. It’s not like it’s competing products or brands, like Walmart or Target. Music enthusiasts will listen to a plethora of bands. It’s not like we individually sign a contract of loyalty to Band A, but not bands B-Z. It’s fucking stupid. All they did was just make music fans hate them more.
But then again, maybe they were just intimidated because Maiden was, and always will be far superior to Kiss.

The System of a Down interview was a sad one. The interviewer was asking good questions and she was really confident too. She’s had a lot of great interviews with people like Peter Steele and Henry Rollins. Sucks that the band was too drugged out to be polite

These make me appreciate the talent of someone like Nardwuar who almost always has entertaining interviews for both the viewer and the band.
Narduwar is great but he only interviews rap artists now. I liked it better when he interviewed rock and metal bands. He still does great interviews but I'm not into modern rap at all. My favorite is when he interviewed Steel Panther.
His Kurt Cobain interview is pretty uncomfortable though. Courtney was actually really cool in that one and saved it from being a complete disaster.

There were also some weirdly racial undertones in how Paul was speaking to that interviewer by mimicking his accent. Speaking as a life-long KISS fan, KISS has never been a stranger to looking or sounding bad from one end of their career to the other, and this interview may be them looking and sounding their absolute worst. It's behavior that is nothing shy of inexcusable bullshit that I refuse to support.

Really love how Gene always says he took ACDC out on their first door, and Bon Scott was interviewed about it and said "I have no idea who KISS is, all we knew is that we got our shot to hit America."
If Bon would have paid a little more attention, he would have noticed that nobody in Kiss drowned on their vomit. He did complement Rush, and either Alex or Geddy said that as much as Bon seemed drunk all the time, when it was time to hit the stage he brought his A game. [ My words. Not a quote.]

They added that SOAD interview to the list of times when bands outclassed interviewers. I watched this when it came out. Julia is a great interviewer and a massive fan. They were absolute dicks, and I didn't think it was funny or cool at all. She had a job to do, and they made me think less of them after this. She's the one who outclassed them.

I've seen that Kiss interview before. It still pisses me off, there's like a hundred different ways they could've handled that instead of being dicks on camera to that poor interviewer who was only doing his job. If they were so concerned with their brand why not address it before the cameras start rolling? Even better, give the guy a t-shirt and everyone sign it on camera so he will have a cool story he can tell his friends about later.

haha that Gaahl thing is gold. I love how he builds up the viewer expectation by thinking for like 1h before giving that shitty answer and "dropping the mic" by drinking a little wine like "omg I'm so badass"... I remember laughing for like 15 minutes straight the first time I watched that. It's like when you feel a pain in your chest and expect like a heart attack or an alien exploding your chest to gain freedom at any second, then you just fart and get better.

I don't really care about what he believes, I only think that the one word answer was just to look badass/smart/awesome and it backfired in my opinion. Could've done better than that if he really wants to make a point. After all if you give an one word answer you will certainly get a follow up question, which he also answered with a single word. People may start thinking you're dumb and can't articulate thoughts lol. EDIT: And sure, he's a nice guy, except for his little blood drinking and torturing problems, but come on, no one's perfect right? Probably more of a nice guy than Ted Nugent if that's even possible.

5:38 The interviewer asked a serious (maybe a little bland) of a question and got a lukewarm response. He make a joke to lighten the mood, and the guy who couldn't answer any questions acted like a pretentious jerk.

Perhaps there's some lost context because the fucking band started the "Elvish" joke and after the guy with the mic said "Lord of the Rings-ish" thats when they said okay fuck this guy lmao. The entire interview must have been shitty. Doesn't help the band members look bored/drunk.

Looking back on all of these stars of yesteryear long after their heydays have faded, I'm struck by how so many of them utterly wasted the golden opportunity their talents gave them to inspire others and leave a lasting legacy of goodwill. It is as if they all believed that the music alone was somehow going to make up for all the times they treated the people around them like shit.
And really, it never did.

I grew up wanting to be a rockstar. Then after seeing how fucked up rockstars are, I think I'd rather just be a musician.
I got punched hard in the back by Phil once. I didn't know who punched me until I turned around, and saw him laughing. It was football Sunday, his Saints lost, and I was wearing a Packers hat backwards. I'm guessing my hat contributed to his punch. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it. 😂
I did a meet and greet with him and Down. He was sober and cool af during the meet and greet....then when Down came to play their first song I was recording it to send to my friend that was unable to attend after being hospitalized. Well Phil saw me with my phone and proceeds to scream about how he's going to break my phone over my face etc. Lol, the dude was drunk af and made himself into a complete ass that night. He was on stage ranting about planned parenthood and f**king all kinds of random nonsense. I still love Phil and his work, but he's definitely a 🤡

Rollins at least showed regret for that interview, granted it was somewhat tepid but he said he owes that guy an apology.
He most certainly does owe the poor kid a sincere apology. I want to reach into the screen and grab that mike and knock Rollins on the head and see how he likes it.
The kid was just trying to ask some questions. He was polite, and in no way provoked that kind of disgraceful response. He was just a kid. And Rollins humiliated him in front of an audience, and had no right to knock him on the forehead.
That teenaged boy kept his cool and showed far more professionalism than Rollins did, who behaved more like a child than the boy did.

It wasn't just the grilling of a teenager. The despicable action was the knocking of the mike on that poor kid's forehead. He had no idea that was coming and Rollins absolutely overstepped the line. That's something cartoonish bullies would do in 80s films like "Back to the Future."
The interviewer was just a teenager, and Rollins had the power in this situation. That was humiliating, doing that in front of others, in front of the cameras.
Somebody should have stepped in and made Rollins apologize to the kid. Makes me want to wrench that mike from Rollins' hand and bash his forehead with it.

It's the guy in the red shirt who's the asshole. He was very condescending and tried to skewer the interviewer with ridicule, especially at the end where he points at him. Really tried to humiliate the interviewer.
Watching these interviews, there's a lot of abuse of power on the part of these musicians. Most of these interviewers seem to be hardly known, and to therefore have very little power and authority to balance these "stars."
