Sadly, Timberlake did that and it was matter of time before a South Korean came to the States to undo that with a history-making Oscar win for his Korean-language film.
The pope's picture she ripped up was of Pope John Paul II soon to be canonized to be a saint. He did a lot of positive things for the catholic church. He was the one who took immediate action to bring clergy who have cohorst young men and young women into sexual relationships with them. Pope John Paul II insisted upon those clergy who perpetrated these evil acts are prosecutor to the full extent of the law. Sinead was a wack job from the start. She chose to be an arrogant person by doing that stuff on SNL. Face it, a lot of "popular" singing stars who are also activists shoot themselves in the foot sooner or later and then they dissapear.
I’ll still never understand whY Janet was blamed for that “wardrobe malfunction”. She wasn’t the one who ripped the piece off. She wasn’t the stylist or costume designer. Sorry, but she shouldn’t have been black listed for that.
I mean, the whole "malfunction" thing is an obvious lie. But that incident and the Robin Thicke backlash goes to show how prude and uptight the US really is. I really don't understand why they made such big fuss about these things.
The fact that Justin Timberlake didn’t even defend Janet Jackson really pisses me off. The media attacked her and he didn’t say crap. I lost a lot of respect for him then, I was never a huge fan of him but that did it for me.
Nah. The next day on CBS2 LA, he blamed her and said she set him up probably because her career wasn't what it uses to be! He later issued a statement and said that ethnic people are treated more harshly.
@@carltonthepug that's a damn lie. There's old footage of Justin when he was with N*Sync talking about his crush on her, he had posters of Janet on his wall, constantly talked about how fine she was and it was rumored that they got together. Next time know what the f^ck you're talking about before spewing nonsense. He liked her a whole lot more than he would you, so there's that.🤡
Janet Jackson’s blacklisting is still one of the most disgusting and egregious forms of gatekeeping and misogyny in the entertainment industry. She deserves so much more than that.
The media blows so much out of proportion, one of the singers of Milli Vanilli killed himself over their backlash, the legendary Janet Jackson had her career destroyed for something she didn’t even do, and Ashley Simpson never got the opportunity to recover from that 1 SNL mistake in life. Honestly the only people that should be holding this level of scrutiny to is our politicians. 💯
Come on, tho. Janet was still going to expose her red, lacy, bra to millions of ppl, including my then, 4-year-old son. That doesn't make me feel good. That makes me feel exactly the same way that JLo's strip pole routine from a few years ago made me feel. So, yes, she did do it. Or at least contributed to what happened.
I still don't understand why Janet got cancelled after a malfunction. Not a huge fan of hers, but this is not fair, especially if Justin went on unscathed.
@Manuel C Lies. Janet Jackson was literally blacklisted by certain video and radio stations after that Superbowl. Les Moonves the head of CBS saw to that and it changed the entire trajectory of her career. Only now is some of that "canceling" wearing off.
Yeah nudity is easy too oversexualized in American Society, especially the female body, Like a breast is a normal body part All of us drank from our mothers boobs when we were babies, and most girls have boobs
Remember when Lenny Kravitz had a wardrobe malfunction on stage and we all just got on with our lives? People understood that these things happen, it's just body parts, and it wasn't even on purpose. It is ridiculous that Janet Jackson was not granted the same courtesy. You would think she had killed someone the way some people reacted.
this was a weird one to be on here because like literally no one cared. media made a big deal of it because it was weird but otherwise...... janet jackson wasn’t really even popular at the time. the whole performance was basically like having her on as a classic to the contemporary justin timberlake.
@@sergeiyzerman7240 @Sergei Yzerman Just to play devil's advocate, isn't it possible that Huw Guyver merely disagrees with your assertion that it was deliberate?
I like how lip-syncing back then was such a huge deal. But nowdays megastars like drake and post malone do it all the time during their live shows. If you can call it a live show... it's just playback with some walking and barking something into the mic every 10 seconds.
Megastars have been doing it for a long time, especially pop & r&b acts where the singer dances & wouldn't have enough breath to sing. It's just... they mostly don't get caught doing it.
To be a megastar these days you need to be able to lip sync because all the vocals are auto tuned on records.. they know their voices are shit. 😄😄😄 To call them stars is an insult let alone mega... fast food society
I'm 59 and can't understand why people are freaking out over a boob? Like NO ONE IN THE WORLD has EVER seen a boob. They were RAISED on boobs. Why is it bad? It's a NATURAL, NORMAL part of your body, and life. People suck. (well, they sucked boobs when they were little) They just FLAT OUT SUCK NOW!
Well, you know, America, show all kinds of murder and killing on tv and in the movies, guns are the leading death in children but don't you dare show a nipple!
Missed the whole point. The Superbowl is not a strip show. Just because many of us sucked milk from mommy's boob does not mean it is appropriate to expose a boob anywhere.
The way he landed he honestly could have killed someone. Their heads were the right height that they could have been broken against the stage by the forward force of his jump.
Janet Jackson getting blamed and punished for the wardrobe malfunction is like a person who got shot is the one being charged with attempted murder. Like where tf is the logic? Edit: I get what some of y’all are saying, but y’all are missing the point of my comment. It’s the fact that Janet’s career faced the repercussions of the incident (accident or on purpose), but not Justin’s, who was the one who pulled the piece off in the first place, or at least the person who designed the outfit. Imo, the resulted backlash definitely was due to either a race thing, a gender thing, or a combination of the both as well as Janet being a Jackson. Buku people were constantly praying for the Jacksons’ downfall for whatever reasons they had.
She had a weird nipple star on... it was not a wardrobe malfunction. It wasn't a piercing. It was some strange decoration for the boob that was entirely supposed to be exposed. I'm sorry, I have no problem with the incident itself... but to try and lie your way out of it after the fact. The people who got mad at the boob were prudes, and probably a few racists who weren't mad at the boob itself, but the fact that it was a black woman's boob. I was 100% on their side until that "wardrobe malfunction" farce. She should have just owned up to it. Her early stuff was just poppy r&b stuff. Her later stuff was sexed up. Which exploded her career for a while. She posed topless with someone holding her naked boobs for the album "Janet". I repeat that was - not - a "wardrobe malfunction".
I've seen several concerts back in the 90's and Janet Jackson by far was the best. She didn't stop at all during her whole set. She sang and danced like there was no tomorrow.
Maroon 5's career was not impacted at all. They have still been cranking out as many hits as ever. Although Adam Levine was already a dick before that.
Maroon 5's career has been sustained mostly by moms. They lost the vast majority of their actual fans somewhere around 2009, when they dropped their original sound, and went full radio pop fodder. Their singles do fine, but their album sales have been garbage for nearly a decade.
I really think that it was impacted. After that awful halftime show they went to Viña del Mar in Chile the most important music festival in South America and their performance was even worst with some shady backstage stories as well. Since then there’s no sign of recovery on sight
He's a big jerk. He came to Chile last year and as he and his managers had a misunderstanding about the show (He thought it would be a bigger show than it actually was, I think), performed a poor show and he acted like a pissed off kid, insulting people and the whole city. I mean, they've come for only a few times and people paid for the show.
the most curious thing is how the incident only affected Janet Jackson, as if Justin Timberlake was not in the performance and had not even touched her

The fact that Justin Timberlake's career continued to thrive while Janet Jackson's slowed down to almost nothing, because of an *accident* that he was part of, shows how shitty the double standards are for men and women.
It makes you think it was a setup. Maybe she pissed off someone in the music industry. The press has a habit of bringing people down if slipped some cash.
i suppose if you are going to have a piece of your clothes ripped off in front of millions of people, and you agree to it, if it goes wrong, you're not entirely blameless? but it was rather a fuss. Probably made by people who visit art galleries and look at 1000 year old naked statues
@@Drobium77 omg ppl, she said it ripped wrong! It was supposed to tear away to her just being in a friggin bra. Female performers have been known to dance around in those with no shirt on. 🙄.
What people don't realize is that the 'wardrobe malfunction' was to take attention off her brother's scandal at the time. To give something else to talk about
Janet Jackson didn’t destroy her career, the reaction did. I mean how could anyone blame her for that? If you blame anyone, it’s Timberlake or whoever made the costume.
I could not understand why Milli Vanilli were destroyed. I waited for the original artists to appear and continue making music 🎶, but to this day, noone knows who they are. Fascinating, because the music was fantastic.
The Music and The Lyrics are more than likely somewhere in The Library of Congress. Which means, the true Vocalists do not own the copywrites. Furthermore, there must be a time sensitive Contract, that keeps the true performers from revealing their Identity.
Well, the original artists didn't want to perform on stage (they prob hate stage performing) but had good voices thus why Milli Vanilli was created (The same producer that made Boney M, another of the lip sync artists) and well Milli Vanilli were coming back with their own voices (the ones that performed on stage, the two men) but one of them died. Now the other still has a music career today, though not as big as before, its very small.
Actually, the musicians behind the sound did come forward later on, as The Real Milli Vanilli. Without the handsome young fake front men, they weren't as successful.
@@kakadoodoo3000 really? I never heard about it, maybe because it was because people felt tricked or not enough advertising 🤔 or air play. I wonder if they tried again, under a different name. They had a great sound. That's a Bummer 😪
two things: 1. Maroon 5 also did a terrible job at a performance here in Chile, he was the absolute worst. 2. We all owe Janet, Sinead and the Chicks an apology
Agreed especially with the second one, all where victims of the extreme prejudices of those times, it wasn’t Janets fault that it was just an accident yet the racist and sexist society denounced her horribly, Sinead was simply warning us about the crimes Catholic Church commits and the heinous criminals that control it yet they all though she was simply being anti-religious, and The (formerly Dixie) Chicks were right about The War on Terror being a mistake but the proud nationalistic patriotic nut jobs just treated them like trash which happens still to this day.
So Janet Jackson's career ends and the guy who ripped her top off becomes a huge star. Crazy. I never really thought about it before but that really did end her career.
Thankfully, by 2013 we had progressed enough that Robin Thicke ended own his career by letting Miley Cyrus shake her butt in his face on live TV, but Miley Cyrus continued to be a star. I'm a little surprised that it wasn't also the end of Miley's career, but I guess the media is more forgiving to young people.
1989 Live performance for the MTV tour which was in Bristol Connecticut at Lake Compounce .. I will never forget it.. being there and being confused as to what was going on as we watched them run off stage
15:25 For context, the performance was petitioned to be a dedication to Stephen Hillenburg, the creator of SpongeBob, who died from ALS. I’m still incredibly upset that the petition only amounted to a fucking 7 second lead-in for Travis “My Concerts Have Killed People” Scott and Adam “I Desperately Want To Be A Sex Symbol” Levine.
I'm a huge GNR fan and this shit doesn't bother me. If slash and the lads didn't get drunk and stoned all the time, we wouldn't have gotten their music.
Greta Van Fleet's performance was the reason I looked them up and ultimately became a huge fan. SNL is notorious for their bad sound and shredding a band's music. Do yourselves a favor, see them live. They are truly amazing and extremely talented. Trust me, SNL did not "ruin" their careers. Their last tour was consistently sold out.
I was very puzzled when i saw them come by in this list haha they are great and for one mediocre performance i dont understand why they deserve a spot on this list
Yeah I think they just wanted to fill the list with artists people will recognise rather than actually having 20 artists who actually ruined their careers.
I swear watchmojo has something against this band, every recent worst list involving bands has Greta listed. They were performing in front on one of the BIGGEST TV shows of all time, Of course Josh would be nervous if he would mess up.
Dishonorable Mentions: * Steve Harwell - Former lead singer of Smash Mouth got intoxicated on stage and threatened fans. * Fear - The punk band was banned from SNL after wrecking the stage.
We Still DO. the asshole arrived late to the Festival, ruining the timeline for other singers ( who had their sets shortened because of him) he came out basically in pajamas and mumbled his songs, and then was caught on tape saying Viña and the Festival were shitty. Since Viña Festival is basically Latin Eurovision, he was an absolute asshole and Chile went as ONE to shred his Instagram and and we are still posting sopaipillas recipes there. Chile never forgets. even after his lousy "sorry guys, I'm a child" video.
Omg what you people are saying in the comments is outrageous. I don't think it matters if the place is shitty or not, it is tremendously disrespectful to say that to the people who (probably) live there and paid to see them. The saddest of all of them was the Everly Brothers. It wasn't just the act that ended, but that gig also precipitated a total end of the relationship - for 10 years not a word passed between them, until their wonderful reunion concert in 1983. But their relationship was always very strained, and they fought like cats and dogs.
The Milli Vanilli story is really sad actually. They got conned into a contract stating that session singers would do the vocals, and when they protested, it was too late, they'd already signed. Sure, they should've read the fine print, but they were young and their manager was a notorious scumbag. One of the guys ended up killing himself.
I think the suicide thing should have come up in this video. They faced so much hate that one of them killed himself. That was before internet was a thing, before social media. Cancel culture is not new, and it was always a danger
Nice reminder that "cancel culture" isn't a new thing, it's really just a re-branding of the old Court of Popular Opinion (which has been around forever lol).
Cancel culture isn’t ceasing to buy a celebrity’s music. Cancel Culture is getting your neighbor fired & doxxed because he said “fag” or “nigga” on twitter in 2011 when he was 16

@Joe Doe serious question, is everything ok? I'm not being sarcastic or passive aggressive or anything, it's just your responses are pretty intense (and I'm not even in support of 'cancel culture', belittling you or trying to change your opinion).
The Janet Jackson thing was unfair and misogynistic. Who decided men's, um, torsos are allowed to show and women's aren't anyway? And Michelle Shocked doesn't seem to understand what words mean.
Right, 'cause it's mostly men that were offended by seeing a woman's boob on television. The "outrage" totally wasn't fueled by judgmental annoying Karens. Haha. It was beer-drinking, football-loving dudes who got upset. Sounds legit.
Except being a single mom and sitting next to my 9 year old son , it was awkward and unexpected from someone of her caliber. I never bought the malfunction story.
It's simple, we are not equal! It's a lie when they tell to women that we are equal cause we're not... What you feel is attractive as a women in a men is way different than a men to women. Women use their nipples and whole body as a bait to atract resources and attention... There's women who have ugly tits and little as a men's nipples, but the huge ones are like a big dick swing all the way out of control, that doesn't look good

The mili vanili thing is crazy. The European release of their hit had a notice saying that other musicians sing the vocals. The u.s. never got that notice lol
@Mike Edwards Then those fans shouldn't have been morons. The chicks didn't state an opinion. Bush was factually a criminal. Period. Anyone who supported him is an accomplice. Period. That's not an opinion, that's reality. The problem was that more people didn't do what the Chicks did.
@Mike Edwards I agree. They could have apologized but their pride got in the way. I’m from Texas and what the lead singer did was an absolute affront. If you’re an entertainer, shut up and perform. Nobody comes to hear your political opinion.
How about Jim Morrison, Miami, 1969, when he came onstage late and drunk, called the audience a bunch of "f'ing idiots" then asked them if he wanted to see his, er, member. People tend to forget that Milli Vanilli was created and shaped by the same guy who was behind Boney M…It’s just basically Boney M 2.0, updated for the 90s! Plenty of artists have lip synced and got no backlash whatsoever…like Whitney’s famous Star Spangled Banner performance at the Super Bowl. Even Michael Jackson had backing tracks during some of the intense dance numbers. They didn’t have to get publicly shamed and give back their Grammys! I’ll still never understand whY Janet was blamed for that “wardrobe malfunction”. She wasn’t the one who ripped the piece off. She wasn’t the stylist or costume designer.
Sorry, but she shouldn’t have been black listed for that.
She obviously had to sign off on it.

Nah. The next day on CBS2 LA, he blamed her and said she set him up probably because her career wasn't what it uses to be! He later issued a statement and said that ethnic people are treated more harshly.

White man or black woman? Of course the woman gets all the blame.
That's misogyny for ya!
@Manuel C Lies. Janet Jackson was literally blacklisted by certain video and radio stations after that Superbowl. Les Moonves the head of CBS saw to that and it changed the entire trajectory of her career. Only now is some of that "canceling" wearing off.

I think the latter is correct
Cancel culture existed even back then. It just didn't have the internet to help it spread like wildfire
Travis Scott ended up on this list even before Astroworld. Wow

The reason why he sucks
Remember when Lenny Kravitz had a wardrobe malfunction on stage and we all just got on with our lives? People understood that these things happen, it's just body parts, and it wasn't even on purpose. It is ridiculous that Janet Jackson was not granted the same courtesy. You would think she had killed someone the way some people reacted.
You don't seem to comprehend the difference between accidental and deliberate acts.
It is no big deal, certainly. But if you honestly think that it was not deliberate, at this point, you are a little too naive.
this was a weird one to be on here because like literally no one cared. media made a big deal of it because it was weird but otherwise...... janet jackson wasn’t really even popular at the time. the whole performance was basically like having her on as a classic to the contemporary justin timberlake.

I think it's the fact that, especially with Milli Vanilli, other people were doing the singing on the records
Megastars have been doing it for a long time, especially pop & r&b acts where the singer dances & wouldn't have enough breath to sing. It's just... they mostly don't get caught doing it.

Its ok to hunch twerk and grab your crotch though...jeez
Missed the whole point. The Superbowl is not a strip show. Just because many of us sucked milk from mommy's boob does not mean it is appropriate to expose a boob anywhere.

Not to mention that English wasn't their first language, I think they German or something.

They signed on the line. Stupidity is not an excuse.
Cancel Culture is getting your neighbor fired & doxxed because he said “fag” or “nigga” on twitter in 2011 when he was 16
@@jakeraught4939 People subscribe to their own definitions of what does and does not count as 'cancel culture', and I don't disagree with any definition. My point is that is that no matter what you call it or what example you use - it isn't a new thing. People have been doing horrible, unfair, petty things to each other forever.
@Joe Doe Bit of a broad statement, personally I think the context matters in each case, but to each their own - you're definitely not the only one who feels that way.

There's women who have ugly tits and little as a men's nipples, but the huge ones are like a big dick swing all the way out of control, that doesn't look good
Maybe folks saw through the bullshit excuse of wearing a pastie over the nipple you claim you DON'T want to expose!
While I agree she shouldn't of gotten punished you are just going crazy, like yea boobs shouldn't be made sexual but that's the way culture is here and you gotta accept that till it isn't that way, fun fact a lot of people actually don't care it's just law but I call it fair considering guys can't have erections in public in a lot of states when we can't control those
The mili vanili thing is crazy. The European release of their hit had a notice saying that other musicians sing the vocals. The u.s. never got that notice lol
We all feel bad for Janet, but i think we also need to feel bad for Sineád, and The Chicks. They simply spoke up against injustices.
For Sinead and Chicks, Misusing their platform was the problem not necessarily the content.
Truth!
Fans don’t want to be lectured abt politics by musicians onstage for a performance. They learned a bitter lesson.
Eminem's "Had give you a career to Destroy it " is still Legendary 🤣🤣
It's so unsurprising how most of these artistes ruined their careers on SNL stages
😲
How about Jim Morrison, Miami, 1969, when he came onstage late and drunk, called the audience a bunch of "f'ing idiots" then asked them if he wanted to see his, er, member. Whether he actually did expose himself has always been a subject of debate, but he was arrested and found guilty, and despite albums like Morrison Hotel and L.A.
