I think something needs to be said for the dreamcast menu as well... i feel like it started a trend with how consoles of the early 2000's would design their menus. I know it was largely based on a more Y2K futuristic aesthetic that was prevalent in the 90's, but it still feels like it belongs more with the consoles of the early 2000's than it does with the 90's.
PS3 may have no games, but it's got a better UI than the 360 Metro dash. 360 NXE solos any console menu ever though besides maybe the 360's own blades dashboard.
@@superstar64 No games? The whole reason why Sony didn’t die in the 7th gen was because they went “hey, people like Uncharted, let’s make more of those”.

I’ve always really liked the PS4 menu, personally. The nice shade of blue, the wave in the background, the calming music. It all just felt really relaxing. Of course though, it was nice when they really got into bringing out themes for it (shoutout to the Rez themes). The Switch is absolutely unforgivable though and just devoid of any personality, which is so antithetical to the Switch as a product. Nintendo is the only one that still feels like they’re making toys and I say that a positive. You feel that with the Switch and how unique and modular it is. Being able to hook it up to the TV or play it as a mobile device. Able to play with the joy-cons in the grip, apart or a more traditional pro controller. Even being able to give one of the joy-cons to a friend and that being able to be used as a smaller controller on its own. It just has so much personality baked into it as a product and then you turn it on and are greeted with that hospital waiting room of a menu.
It's cause of console modding. The PS3, Vita, Nintendo Wii U, 3DS, and Wii, all had an exploit that took advantage of the web browser. If you wanna mod a PS3, Vita, or Wii U, you still have to use that browser exploit, just due to how powerful it is. There was even an exploit found in the PS4 via the web browser, despite that being extremely locked down. (Like the PS5, it's a system function, not an app the user can open) If you managed to navigate to google, you could go to a website, and jailbreak your PS4.
@@Valcuda yes I am aware of those exploits. However they take years to develop. It’s just regression and anti consumer. That’s a Sony/Nintendo problem. Not ours. Xbox I believe still has its browser enabled. They actually have zero modding protection at all. They implemented a built in dual boot mode iirc so you can boot into developer mode and install all the emulators you want. This actually prevents piracy as it would disincentivize the hackers to hack the console as it already is “good enough” of a built in solution. PS5 already has an exploit in a previous kernel build. Sony also believed in consumers right to mod their console in the PS3 era when they promised Linux on PS3. Although they backed out on that promise eventually.
@@ValcudaYes this is one of the Exploits that basically never gets fixed instead of doing that they simply bann Browser for the Average Joe how many do exploit it ? Barely any most are casual.
Honestly Nintendo 3DS was my favorite menu because you could customize it and make it your own it just felt so good to know that you were individual and could express yourself not only through your DS case but your actual DS screen ya know?
I grew up with the PS3 and I can give one tiny detail, remember when you insert a PS3 Game disc it would immediately take you to the Game, but if you leave it on the main menu with just the Game not booted up it just starts blasting noise or music
i was rocking the wiiu and idk if it's just me but after constantly hearing the startup from both booting up the system and games i go through a whole new level of nostalgia. and it feels like someone beat the shit out of my ass

Maybe it’s just my bias, but I like every PlayStation UI. The XMB felt clean and futuristic, and the customizable backgrounds were cray back in the day. The PS4 had awesome themes and good ambient music, and the PS5 has more focus on the actual games you have on your console than any other system I’ve seen

Apparently with the turn of the century good design died with it, everything has to be minimalist now, god i hate the whole "modern" style so much, it's like white bread and water of graphic design
Minimalism is a plague now. It's on our games, it's on our interior design, it's in our clothes, it's on our logos, social media, etc I'm not saying minimalism doesn't have its place in the world, but why does EVERYTHING have to look soulless 😕

Very well made. I loved this video. I was born in 2004, and grew up with the DSi, Wii, Wii U... The nostalgia I got from watching this video really hit hard. It evokes memories of spending time with my brother playing games like Wii Party, Mario Kart Wii, and going out to collect StreetPass entries on my 3DS. Thank you for taking the time to make this video. It was great.
Yes! To the ambience! My favorite part of a game was loading up the console and hearing the music preparing me to play. Now, I barely want to play games. But simultaneously I have such a deep longing sensation for video games. Perhaps, if the vessel providing to me is lacking soul, like everything else nowadays.

This is so beautiful I miss my childhood and every video game I grew up playing, especially playing on the GameCube and ps2 and having all nighters to play since I didn’t have a extra memory card
Had this randomly playing in the background but 18:00 made me do a doubletake -- had to rewind that a few times to make sure I heard right. This may be some sort of mandela effect thing but as someone in my 30's I swear there was a handheld device from Nintendo before the DS. Can't quite put my finger on the name but if memory serves you could actually play video games on it too like Donkey Kong and it even had a port for the first Pokemon games. Before then Pokemon needed to be played with actual animals outside and if you wanted to trade them long-distance your internet consisted of a string of dental floss tied to a tree near your tent. The DS really revolutionized hand-held gaming by adding screens (thus greatly reducing the chances of injury whilst trying to catch wild Pokemon) and it truly showed the world what was possible, even in its infancy. 10/10 video.
Ending with Minecraft music was a crazy good choice, to me those Minecraft themes are the bridge between the childish naïveté the frutiger aero so dominated into the flat, blocky design that we had as we entered adulthood. I’ve always been very into video games, but Minecraft and a few games after it (Destiny, the Witcher, dark souls namely) became obsessions that basically deleted my teenage years. Now, in my early twenties, I can’t help but look back at the stuff we had as kids and feel an ultimate, almost sad nostalgia. I even bought a Wii just the other day to play with the family and girlfriend. Shit brings a tear to my eye! Amazing video, and the easiest subscribe I’ve ever given.
Back then, we didn't have menus. No. We had interfaces; factories; bio labs. You log in one day and all of a sudden, you're inside of a spaceship performing maintenance on the ship's engine. That's awesome! And then all hell breaks loose when you get a red ring of death, maybe your ps2 malfunctions and you're stuck inside a dark void lost in time, and it's nothing but you abandoned in space. There's something about today's console menus that are kinda like looking at food in a restaurant's menu. You get what you order for and leave once the food's eaten. You don't really experience anything from looking at a restaurant's menu aside from, "that looks good so I'll order that." Minimalism looks nice, it's clean, and it's kinda professional depending on how you look at it. But hey when you're gaming, you're off the clock and enjoying yourself. You don't need to be so professional about accessing a menu to play a game! You're basically the admin of a world you have full control over. You get to make whatever decision you want with that console as long as it's yours. So imagine this, you're back in this world. You can manipulate it however you like! We need companies to look at this example and go back to our peak era of immersion in the world of gaming. These consoles are what made our childhoods great! You can always remember the games you played on them, but the consoles were like a world full of dreams that are possible to make real.
this was an amazing video, I cant believe how nostalgic you made me feel, I felt like I was 8 again. specially when you mentioned mirrors edge... that game is a whole experience which I recommend to everyone to experience it at least once. This is the first time I find a video that actually tackles all the exact points of these designs, but structured in the same way I ramble about them in my head lol. Amazing analysis and work, man! I too, wish that design nowadays wasn't so devoid of personality. I am a graphic designer and I just believe we become designers to communicate more than just mere products. These menus were filled with small little details that did just that: communicate something more... felt more human. Again, thank you so much for this fantastic video!

I would say that it's actually the opposite, since 2000's consoles were thought in the 90's
This is my kind of content, count me in. Internet Pitstop sent me.

The PS3 XMB slander is outrageous and will not be tolerated 😭🙏
PS3 may have no games, but it's got a better UI than the 360 Metro dash. 360 NXE solos any console menu ever though besides maybe the 360's own blades dashboard.
I think the PS3 XMB is really organized because of the categories, what makes you not enjoy it?
@@superstar64
No games? The whole reason why Sony didn’t die in the 7th gen was because they went “hey, people like Uncharted, let’s make more of those”.
@@flowerthencrranger3854
Bro it's an old joke, the only Playstation with no games is the PS5.
@@superstar64
PS5? That released already? Haven’t heard of it.
Hit by so much Nostalgia of a time that has passed, crazy that one can be so emotional over interfaces.
But truly, art breathing to be appreciated. I didn't think I'd get a tear from this watch. You get a sub my dude.
It just has so much personality baked into it as a product and then you turn it on and are greeted with that hospital waiting room of a menu.
ps3 still has one of the best menu's of all time, it's so simple yet elegant and beautiful and that opening music is just the chef's kiss
Came here to hear someone gush about the Wii menu, left hearing someone give some really nice words :)
Crazy how the DS and PSP had web browsers 20 years ago and the PS5 doesn’t.
(Like the PS5, it's a system function, not an app the user can open)
If you managed to navigate to google, you could go to a website, and jailbreak your PS4.
And those also had games, the PS5 still doesn't
@@shaggy7599
It’s a cycle, they make some bad decisions, get crap for it, start to be pro consumer to get users back, gets user base, then repeat.

Same, you get it. It makes me so glad ThemePlaza is a thing!
I grew up with the PS3 and I can give one tiny detail, remember when you insert a PS3 Game disc it would immediately take you to the Game, but if you leave it on the main menu with just the Game not booted up it just starts blasting noise or music
ps2 memcard icons were peak kino

Maybe it’s just my bias, but I like every PlayStation UI. The XMB felt clean and futuristic, and the customizable backgrounds were cray back in the day. The PS4 had awesome themes and good ambient music, and the PS5 has more focus on the actual games you have on your console than any other system I’ve seen
End message is great but i just want customisation back. Nintendo pls bring themes to switch 2 😭
They should bring themes to the switch in general like wth i ain't gonna buy a whole ahh new console just for some themes man 💀

The only way is if the switch 2 has an updated OS and for some weird reason some updates go to legacy the console.

Steam bubbly squareish shape game me feelings that its like box of the game. I miss that all time.

I agree it's really sad what even last gen consoles did to the Aesthetics but at least Us PS4 players still have the option to get a cool custom background but even sound effects and music like one of my favorite ones is Call of Duty World War II endowment Edition where you get a cool background of two people rocking a machine gun Jeep and live gun fire in the background artillery strikes
I think this is my favorite video on TH-cam.

Apparently with the turn of the century good design died with it, everything has to be minimalist now, god i hate the whole "modern" style so much, it's like white bread and water of graphic design
facts it' even bled into the furniture. new furniture is so FUGLY
Minimalism is a plague now. It's on our games, it's on our interior design, it's in our clothes, it's on our logos, social media, etc
I'm not saying minimalism doesn't have its place in the world, but why does EVERYTHING have to look soulless 😕

Was gonna throw hands when you called the PS3 menu mid, then at 6:39 you became the first person I've heard in over 60 years to utter the name "Modnation Racers' meaning you are automatically deserving of a 10/10 review score from me. (Wish I still had that game... it literally got robbed... 😥)
Broo I was trying to remember what the game was called for the longest time gosh that game was awesome I remember getting free skins and cars from multiplayer. I was so young so it was hard to remember thank you, I wish they’d make creative games like that again ps3 had such amazing games that promoted creativity & fun like little big planet 2 and mod nation racers.
I missed when consoles used to have charm in general. We don’t get that anymore.
The PS2's menu was always a little creepy tbh.
Yes! To the ambience! My favorite part of a game was loading up the console and hearing the music preparing me to play. Now, I barely want to play games. But simultaneously I have such a deep longing sensation for video games. Perhaps, if the vessel providing to me is lacking soul, like everything else nowadays.
i highly rec investing in a better microphone, the vid is insanely high quality and well-written for a channel your size so it’s a shame that the audio quality isn’t quite up to par. Besides that, def subbing, shit is good
The mic is good,I just had terrible settings and wasn’t arsed re recording 3 hours worth of footage. Will definitely double check my mixer next time. Noted❤️❤️

@@Mayorski it was more the title and the fact that it was 40 minutes long so i could watch while I play gta lol
The Sega Saturn & Dreamcast had some of the coolest boot screens on a home console.
Bring me back to Blades 360 dash & PS3 XMB anyday of the week
