Hi, I'm Chris! Welcome to my channel. I react to movies & tv shows hoping to represent what it's really like to experience them for the first time. If you enjoy, you can support me by liking the video, subscribing to the channel, and letting me know your thoughts in the comments.
I am so glad I finally saw this one! Different than I expected, but just as good. I thought it did an amazing job of revisiting a significant moment in BSG history while helping set the stage for season 4. I'm ready!

In this particular case, the studio requested a "stand-alone" telemovie that could be premiered on the Sci-Fi Network and roughly a week later be released as an extended edition on home media. The show writers realized there really wasn't anything "stand-alone" they could write to take place between Seasons 3 and 4 (as it literally left off on a cliffhanger) and looked back at prior stories before settling on the backstory of the Pegasus and what that crew experienced prior to joining with the rag-tag fleet.
A side benefit was they were able to also write and shoot the 'Razor Flashbacks' [the story of Adama at the end of the first Cylon War] and release them as a series of weekly webisodes to generate excitement for the premiere of Razor/Season 4.
I loved how the Razor Flashbacks made much more overt references to the 1978 original BSG series from the use of the original TV theme (during the space battle), the uniforms mimicking the Blue and Tan original series uniforms with the checkerboard piping and the Galactica emblem on the pilot helmets, the original Cylon Raider and Baseships shown during the battle, and of course the modernized (CGI) Cylon Centurions - including a gold Cylon commander and the tag line "By your command!"
What the Hybrid says when they first enter:
At last, they’ve come for me. I feel their lives, their destinies spilling out before me. The denial of the one true path, played out on a world not their own, will end soon enough. Soon there will be four, glorious in awakening, struggling with the knowledge of their true selves, the pain of revelation bringing new clarity, and in the midst of confusion, he will find her. Enemies brought together by impossible longing, enemies now joined as one. The way forward at once unthinkable, yet inevitable. And the fifth, still in shadow, will claw toward the light, hungering for redemption that will only come in the howl of terrible suffering. I can see them all. The seven, now six, self-described machines who believe themselves without sin, but in time, it is sin that will consume them. They will know enmity, bitterness, the wrenching agony of the one splintering into the many, and then they will join the promised land, gathered on the wings of an angel. Not an end, but a beginning.
Also just a fun note, the actor who plays the first hybrid voice acted the narrator for the Homeworld video games.
Only after watching the show finale you can understand this. I'm happy I didn't think about going through this by that time.
That was quite a read. Thank for taking the time to put this.
Having the talking Centurions was a nice throwback.
Cain is very complex, she is a survivor who lost her family and is motivated by her guilt. During the Cylon attack she has lost everything. Her new family ( the fleet) a betrayal by her lover who turned out to not only using her but wants to execute her entire race, her crew, it’s her fight to survive. All this broke her. She is suffering through severe post traumatic stress and has become unhinged. It’s like Adama said she doesn’t have a President a Lee to check on her mortalities. She executed the XO who was her only person to reason with. The only person she had she executed but she wasn’t that close to him anyway. It’s only after she meets Adama, Roslin, Lee and Starbuck and they work together to blow up the Cylon Resurrection ship and Starbuck doesn’t execute her ( she knew that was her intention) that she realizes, help is here and she can rely on someone else. That she doesn’t have to do it all alone anymore and maybe she can heal But by that time too late
Loved the unforgiven reference and Clint Eastwoods line “we’ve all got I coming, kid.”
Razor was a great little insight into a few characters and had a solid story that helps connect a lot of stuff together. Also, seeing the OG Cylon models was incredible. One of my first memories as a kid was watching the original BSG on VHS at my grandfather’s. Got me hooked on sci fi. Season 4…here we come!!!
Season 4 is going to blow you away!
An emotional rollercoaster awaits!
Kendra Shaw was a fine addition to the crew/cast and it was kinda a shame she didn't feature throughout the remainder of BSG
Loving ur reactions.
Thanx for the content and for reacting to this wonderful series
Every week as I watch his reactions, it just reminds me of how I felt watching the show as it aired. When he reaches Revelations, Sometimes a Great Notion and Daybreak, oh those are gonna definitely hit.
This was so well done and well planned with all the stories we had heard about Admiral Kane.
11:00 Yes, Gina was fully aware, which makes it worse for her.
I forgot how much I like this movie. Shaw is such a great character.
I might've mentioned this before but back in the day this premiered in select theaters around the US. Seeing BSG on the big screen was a hell of an experience.
Something you made me think of when you were talking about the wacky workarounds required to watch this during season two: it kinda spoils the moment hybrids are first revealed. The first time we see one in season 3 is so interesting and part of what makes Baltar's basestar sequence so unique. Knowing about hybrids early would kinda deflate that moment IMO.
On to season four. 😁
Excellent point about the Hybrid reveal!
Oh, it was a fun night- were you at the LA (well, Century City, if memory serves) screening?
I actually really like Razor where it fits in chronological order: it makes for a much better introduction to the hybrid than what we get in season 3’s early episodes, there’s more tension to Shaw’s survival since we haven’t had a whole season without her, the events are more relevant to the viewer, it adds more weight to the sacrifice of the Pegasus. Don’t know why people think Kara being the Harbinger of Death is a spoiler - devoid of context, it’s just a teaser that pays off at the end of the following season.
I agree. I watched it that way, and it works a lot better.
Pretty much my opinions as well
To me, if I watched Razor during Season 2, the line about Kara would've just increased the tension more, which is a great thing.
I always have to smile at the saying that they could land in a sun if they jumped blindly. But if there's one thing in space, it's a lot of empty space and few suns in comparison. Their position can then also be extrapolated at any time by determining stars around them.
So their main problem would be if the FTL drive were to fail or supplies were so scarce that they would starve or be unable to jump any further. 😉
"All of this has happened before, and it will happen again. All that moves, is easily heard in the void. We will listen for you. Farewell."
- the late Campbell Lane. #RIP
Rewatching it again with you really shows that this show has a world view of no absolute morality, just the subjective morality of those who look back on these events. It's something to think about.
I remember how we howled when those OG cylons first appeared. It was nice to see them kicking ass and actually being a force to be reckoned with (the OGs were often cannon fodder, which was disappointing). Can't wait for season four!!
Finally. Let’s go!!!!’ Bring on season 4
I wouldn't think of the First Hybrid as a god. The others, his "daughters", are oracles worthy of Delphi. He is more a prophet. This is the right place to hear him. That the old centurions revere him only makes him blessed babbler. And Cain... Yeah, that was never subtle naming. How she passed psych is a mystery. But many of the great leaders of history had a touch (or a lot) of madness and drew enough of their own people's blood to fill a large lake, 5-6 quarts at a time, including many we do not consider evil. Bill was right- she had no Rosalyn, no Lee, no Tigh. Especially no Lee. Imagine Bill Adama if his son sold out humanity, how he would have shattered.... Humans alone are animals. Those alone in a crowd become monsters.
Alrighty, up to date with Doctor Who and Torchwood - now to binge Battlestar!
I'm grateful you included Razor, not everyone does - and I agree with so many of your after thoughts. The moral ambiguity of legal/right/just choices is made so clear in Razor, that it's difficult to see even the most awful characters as anything less than human, they're doing their best and previous trauma will always impact them.
Looking forward to season 4
I don’t get why Cain wouldn’t simply take the civilians aboard the Pegasus, in time they could all have become crew or at least support staff.
Great reaction! Razor is one of my favorite character development stories, rich with the backstories that enriches those character aspects of the show. I have to disagree about including this within the regular season. The show is about the Battlestar Galactica, not the Battlestar Pegasus. Razor as a stand alone story hits harder when we are immersed in this particular story without the distracction of story arcs of the regular show. It's like Rogue One not being included as a Star Wars episode.
Have you considered that Ron Moore's decision to do and release Razor before the start of season 4 was intentional and intended?
If you really love BSG, then watch The Expanse. Same great character writing.
Or DS9; same BSG writers, even
Now watch Battle Star Galactica The Plan.
See it from the Cylon point of view. Save it till you are done with all the seasons. Give it a go after that. The Plan is a good show.
The Plan may be watched at any time after season 2.
However, I would recommend to watch just before the finale. It is more significant and impactful then.
Also, definitely NOT watch it after the finale, because The Plan is Ok but NOT great, and watching after the finale would feel anti-climactic.
@@joseliano325 huh? The Plan has MAJOR early season 4 spoilers. Definitely not viewable after season 2.
Almost all the guides suggest after episode 15 no exit. I plan to watch it there with the assumption I’ll know most everything it would spoil and it won’t disrupt the final push through the finale.
Definitely recommend after No Exit or Deadlock.
Adama: This cocksucker's mine!
Classic.
Also, I'm not sure including Razor as episodes in S2 was necessary- but a few glimpses of Shaw in the background, or in some radio chatter... HAVE HER ON THE SHIP (even if they had to add her in to some earlier episodes once they decided to make the movie); I do hate when we have a very important character inserted into a 'verse's canon, but we've never heard of them. Seriously, just get some footage of her sitting at a station in the Pegasus CIC, and comp that into the shots in the episode Pegasus; maybe some radio chatter in Black Market name drops her... Sure, purists who remember the first run will know, but it'd feel more cohesive.
Basically, Cain is a coward, which is OK until she disguises it as toughness. Everything she does is for her own survival.
WRONG! she was a scared little girl!
Honestly, I'd say its the other way; its not that she's afraid and overcompensating, but she lacks fear. And let's be clear, fear is important; its let's you know when you need to get the hell outta somewhere, helps keep you and yours alive. She seems to have completely lost/removed her fear, and only understands it as a concept that stops others from doing what she orders them to do. Or to put it another way, she's a clinical psychopath that's lacking a proper fear response. And yes, probably as a result of her trauma, especially on that final day...
(And no, its not a military thing- in the military especially, you work through your fear- you get over it and accomplish the mission- but it tends to hit you later. It might not have been shown, but we never seemed to see that.)
Cain is great at justifying her aweful decisions and making people agree with her but for me there is no justification, she literally executed her best friend and XO who was calling her out on her hypocrisy.
Season 4 is wild, and does suffer from a quality drop...but still not 'bad' or undramatic viewing.
The first half does have a bit of a slump, but I think that it works in making us feel how the characters are feeling. The second half though is pretty much a straight ride.
Don't you find it odd, that they never mentioned Shaw at all during Season 3, even though she was XO of the Pegasus, under Lee? This is why you don't introduce new characters into a show that had no impact during the original airing, but tremendous impact in the stand alone. You're going to be disappointed with Season 4. Many people were.
The show took a quick nosedive after they killed Starbuck.
Who knows what I'll think when it's all over, but I'm six episodes into season 4 and having the time of my life.
Thank the Gods I was not one of the "Many people." The series Finale of BSG is my favorite wrap of a TV series ever. I am STOKED that you're finally in the end run. So many dramatic twists and turns are coming. And your reactions Chris have been more than equal to the material. Really enjoying your reactions to this show. Now get to the finale so I can squeal in delight. And maybe feel sad a little because it's the end of the ride.
@@Dendood Honestly, I was happier than most (was on the Skiffy boards and knew a lot of fans (and some cast/crew) in Los Angeles); now, if they had cut it a few minutes earlier, I'd be 100% with you... a certain cameo (not RIGHT in front of the camera, man...) and the lack of subtlety still gives me a "sooooo close" feeling.
Very, very tangential spoilers (well, not really, but still)- but proceed with caution if concerned
Though I do enjoy how Eddie (I mean, Mr. Olmos) considers Blade Runner part of the RDM BSG timeline.
@@Dendood He'll be relieved because the ending was a turd of an episode.
