Problem is every year it gets blocked up, because small twigs and bits of grass get in to the gutters and falls down the pipe,it then sit in the rim of the fitting until a bigger piece falls across the smaller hole, then it just backs up, until you realise no water in your water butt, then you remove the fitting clean it out, then it's the pipe containing anything up to six foot of sludge, first time i noticed the problem it was raining no water coming down so I investigated, found the fitting full of brown sludge, so cleaned that out, but still no water coming from the pipe, so I gave the drain pipe a wack and down it all came, birds skeleton, muck that was once grass and whatever else gets in a gutter including worms no idea how they get up there ??, then the water backed up in a twenty foot drain pipe they smell was disgusting, so if you find maggots on your walls by the downpipe or your water butt isn't filling then it's a blockage best taken care of straight away, saying that I know is a negative but simply checking the fitting after every summer keeps the big mess away, and the important thing is your using free water from your water butt, plus you can add the worms to your compost pile, the muck is best allowed to dry and then swept up and thrown away, cleaning it while it's wet is just messy and needs a hose after.
You don't sterilise it,the bits and pieces settle to the bottom, your tap is higher than the bottom for this reason, the water is rain so nothing that wasn't going on the garden already, that's all they are for, the fitting itself works, as soon as the pipe level is reach in the butt the water just goes down the drain pipe and away.

I think they missed the point entirely a demo would be a great marketing tactic.
Great kit. I have three butts in my garden. One question though. Will the butts freeze and split in British winter? Do I need to drain them? Thanks.
