The choking incident of P.J. Carlesimo was fresh on the heals of the O.J. Simpson verdit in 1995 and a year removed from the Lawrence Phillips domestic violence incident which drew national attention. In the wake of those incidents, sensationalizing black male behavior at its worst had become a viewership bonanza for TV execs, and the Sprewell incident was like gold falling into their laps. Ultimately, Sprewell was held accountable for his actions by the league, but the aftermath (which wasn't helped by his subsequent behavior and fuck-ups) was pinned on the NBA's overall image for years...and just for good measure, the combustible situation was bunched in with 2004's Malice at the Palace and Larry Johnson's "slave" remarks during the Knicks 1999 playoff run. No other league has to painstakingly watch its image more than the NBA because there's always this undercurrent of animosity directed towards its players for numerous reasons (overpaid, underskilled, too much woofing, etc.) by people with negative perceptions that go beyond basketball.

"Next Jordan" is a little much! LOL
