Renember when Buffy got accepted into a good school elsewhere, and Cordy said "that's great! Now you can leave Sunnydale and never come back!" And when they look at her funny, she's like, that's a good thing, who would ever want to stay in Sunnydale? Whelp, Cordy's father is in jail, they lost the house, cars and everything, and we never found out what happened with her mom, and she's not dating anyone there, and she couldn't afford to go to college even at the local level, and the Wesley infatuation died with a horrible couple of kisses...
She had nothing keeping her in Sunnydale - and LA is the place lots of people go to reinvent themselves after all...we love having her here!
Cordie's line "What do you want me to do?" always gets me. She thinks she is in a different kind of danger, and it seems like her circumstances may have her thinking about it.
Wheeeee! I'm so excited to see what Bel thinks of the Angel series. 🎉🎉 It's what I started with, because I am backwards, lol. (I saw the first few episodes of Angel, loved it, then realized it was a spin-off of Buffy which I'd never seen, so I went back and watched 3 seasons of that and caught up, then started watching Buffy season 4 and Angel season 1 at the same time.)
Doyle: Good gate. 😆🤣
Favorite line: Angel saying, "Hmm... can you fly?"
I remember the first time I saw this episode, my mouth dropped open, I was so surprised. It wasn't usual for a show to get rid of a bad guy so soon! I assumed he was going to be a regular bad guy or something. So for Angel to kick him out the window... *chef's kiss That was so good. (And good riddance, Russell.)

one of my fall time faves. a few fun facts from the dvd commmentary: the doyle character was originally meant to be the whistler character introduced at the end of buffy season 2; the russell character was inspired by then real estate mogul and now former Pres. Donald Trump.

Bel Welcome to the other part of The Buffyverse, which of course Jamie knows. Give it time it's a brilliant show. This was a strong opener Angel as a character has so much depth in this. Great to see Cordy too, and along with Doyle a great trio in the early days. Great crossover episodes and plotlines too with BTVS. If you keep to the watch order it will make a bit more sense but as you said if you are going to do alternative episodes you will enjoy it the same. Enjoy the show, IMHO the very best episodes of Angel are easily a match for BTVS and many surpass it. Enjoy the show, you will love it. Good Luck.
Buffy: great show I can't relate to because I left college and am not a snarky young woman
Angel: fantastic show I love because it started with a sort of alcohol abuse sub text. Except I drink vodka and not blood. Personal preference. So glad you ladies are on the this now yay
This was the pilot episode so the effects weren't very good but they get better immediately. I always found Angel to be a dull character but Cordy is irresistible, her smile lights up a room.

A lot of pilots are really uneven and have to be taken with a grain of salt, but I think this one does a fantastic job of being entertaining and surprising while still setting up all the themes of the show.

We *love* Six Feet Under! It's one of the few TV shows Bel has watched all the way through. And yes, there are tons of recognizable faces on the show. Thanks MrLorenzo
I always find it funny how spoiler free people try to be nowadays considering said spoiler from the credits was something many of the original fans knew before the episode aired. That's what the internet has done to people, though. Try to be spoiler free in a society where every little thing is or can create spoilers.
Sawyer from _LOST_ is a vampire.
Love the fact that the moment showing Angel being non-drunk to the audience wasn't picked up on by Bel. And on that note I love when Angel puts his acting skills to use.
Angel asked a vampire for a breath mint. That's irony.
The vampire makeup for this episode in order to try to seperate itself from BtVS was terrible.
Angel jumping into the wrong car would be overplayed on any other show, but it works here because they've already payed up the rediculousness of the LA lifestyle, and with that joke the audience realizes Angel has unintentionally become a small part of it by being a vampire who has a topless car in a city known for being sunny and said car doesn't stand out enough for him to distiguish his from someone elses.
Cordelia has some great one-liners in this episode.
I describe BtVS as a coming of age story while AtS is a story about being a grown up. That's the easiest way to understand the differences in both shows.
No mention of the villain in next week's teaser. That is how it should be done.
I think the spoiler-free focus is because people enjoy seeing the reactions during the show at the moment something is revealed in context, but I would be fine with them reacting to seeing the reveal in the credits and then waiting in anticipation. 🤷♂️

Yes, thankfully the makeup does get so much better. I forgot about Sawyer! It totally slipped my mind to point him out. Bel would know him. One of the only shows she's fully watched is LOST.
Yes, I have heard the shows described that way in relation to eachother. That's pretty spot on.
Idk if you've watched Six Feet Under but, Angel jumping into the wrong car always reminds me of that scene when Claire goes to check out an art school for the first time and she sees a hearse parked right next to her hearse, and it's like a sign that she belongs there. Ironically, that also happens in LA. Lol
If I had let Bel watch the credits, I would get a bunch of comments telling me why I shouldb't have let her watch the credits. Might be good for the algorithm?🤔Lol. But, I'm just trying to avoid a bit of chaos in the comment section. I didn't watch this when it aired, so I have no clue what ppl knew and didn't know at the time. I just have to take the internet's word for it.
This is such a good pilot episode! I'm so glad they injected Cordy immediately and we didn't have to wait for her to show up in some "very special episode of Angel". Doyle is instantly likeable. Russell is made out to be much more of a threat than he really is. Completely taking your eye off the ball when it comes to WRH being the *real* big bad. On my first watch I didn't understand HOW big bad they would become. I know Bel isn't clued in yet as to WRH's role in this story. It's a very well done intro to the show.

@@Sisnerdly Buffy8Fan is one of the best. She doesn't even yell at me when I point out the occasional typo or missing word! With the volume of text she generates, the occasional oops is to be expected, and if a word changes the intended meaning, I know she'll want to fix it. (I'm assuming she, if I am wrong I certainly hope to be corrected!)
