Michael Caine had a clever way of expressing this also, he said that if you're rehearsing a scene and the director walks up and says "Oh... I see you're rehearsing, I'll come back later" then you're doing something wrong. If the director walks up to two actors rehearsing a scene (or maybe not the director but anybody else on set) walks up; interrupts and you have to tell him "I'm sorry, we're rehearsing a scene, can you come back in five minutes?" and that person had no idea you were even rehearsing - you're doing it right.

I just started a new beginner's acting class 2 weeks ago, and during my very first class, I was given a monologue...memorized it in a few minutes, but realized during my first performance that I had not used the acting w's. But after digesting my great teacher's lessons and your videos, I more realistically brought my character to life during the 2nd class last week where we were off-script and filmed! I am an aspiring singer and we are always told not to mimic the pros. Use your own singing voice as they say. I never really thought this holds true for acting, till this sharing. Here’s a tip!! So if you are acting, forget your acting!! If your acting happy think of something that makes you happy, and eventually you will be so happy irl you will forget your acting!! There is a principle called "The Feynman Principle" (named after Richard Feynman) which states that if you can't explain a complex subject in simple language to someone who knows nothing of the subject, then you don't know enough about the subject. But if you reverse this principle it's one of the greatest learning techniques. If you REALLY want to understand a a complex subject, try explaining it in simple language to someone who knows nothing of the subject. I think Kurt has mastered the Feynman principle. I once heard someone that said "When you're acting a character, you are not interpreting the character, you are the character" that helped me a lot to understand that when you're acting you don't really "act" bc it's yourself that it's in action not "your character"
I agree with everything that you are saying, when you are physically doing something you should really do it and not pretend to do it, however, I think the question most beginning actors want answered is when it comes to playing a scene that requires you to be in a certain emotional state how do you really do that without indicating or faking the emotions.
*I am a new voice actor* with a burning desire *to take my skill to the next level*. My question is: How do I act in a more realistically *resonant and compelling* way when reading -- that is, in a situation where the script isn't memorized? By the way, I really appreciate your videos. They are insightful and informative. While my voice acting realism with memorized scripts is relatively good, there is a problem: *This acting realism does not happen to the same degree when I'm actually reading the script out loud*. It happens when I'm beginning to memorize or have memorized the script. These two modes of acting (memorized versus reading) feel very different in my mind. In fact, I find that when *I've realistically acted a memorized script, and I then try to act it while reading the script the result is not as good as if I'm not reading. *I've noticed that after I've analyzed the script and eventually memorized it*, the more I let go and imaginatively live the story, (living the character and feeling his intentions as he interacts with other character(s)), I find that I'm even beginning to feel the characters' sensations bodily (breathing, tension or relaxation etc...) which really helps me act with realistic vocal variations (in my pace, pitch, power, and emotional tone etc...). However, I find it very difficult to achieve the same level of acting while I'm reading the script out loud. So again my question is: How do I act in a realistically resonant way when reading or when the script isn't memorized? My challenge seems to be (and I could be wrong): I have difficulty being fully immersed in or connected to "the theater of my mind" (as I've heard voice actors call it) as I read. As I said, I'm a new voice actor with a burning desire to take my skill to *the next level*, and I would deeply appreciate any feedback you can give. Thanks
I'm trying to create multiple characters played by myself, one dimensional in certain aspects, but all of them created for a very important reason, and I'm not even an actor (as in "nowhere-near-the-slightest-mole-of-industrial-grade-acting-skills-or-experience" actor). Yes, I know, it's kinda crazy, right? I know I'll be able to handle it all, though, by making use of the best of my knowledge, learning new things and, mainly, the divine mercy and wisdom I'm dealing with, which are relentlessly overwhelming my life at times, but I'm thankful for these blessings, of course, because all of them things are the essential part of something greater than myself (in fact, this is not about me at all, that's why I'm creating these characters in the first place!) - something that is poised to unfold a well-put-together work of craftsmanship, innately magnetized by esoteric levels of pure, energetic love. This is very true! Yet I find it almost sad in a way that we have to be "taught" to feel such basic human emotions, and I think our society is reinforcing this even more.. as we socialize with our bodies less and screens more. Shouldn't it be nearly automatic, to feel our basic emotions, use authentic gesture, expression, tone? So many people are taught to stifle their emotions and curb their curiosity, creativity, individuality.. often at a young age, to meet cultural, gender, societal "norms" The honest truth.. really good actors are comfortable with feeling emotions.. understanding, empathic they stand in other's shoes to better learn everything around them. That molds an intriguing, versatile actor. The role may be a homeless drunk .. or a proper Royal from lines of tradition.. each role requiring the necessary knowledge, research, and emotional conditioning to TRULY get in that role. Im sure theres acting vocabulary to better describe, but I am not an actor. One thing I really respect.. an actor that can go far and beyond " their own self " to transform into a completely different, intricate (sometimes abhorrent) role. Assimilation is the key of acting. for example.. Charlize Theron in the movie Monster, plays role of real life murderer Aileen Wuornos.. Now, she didn't just jump up there and run lines, acting out a typical role (lets say .. random.. '50s housewife') .. she spent who knows how many hours studying the footage of Aileen from her trial, her colloquialisms, tics and speech , gestures, attitude! ... that was an example of highest mastery in character assimilation. Using your own body and creating the character .. and roles always exist for the character no good person would want to become... but it is needed. It must be so stressful for some. I also believe the ability comes naturally to some people. they know themselves, understand others, they're empathic can see into a person in a manner.. and also maybe a little weird, lonely. I study people sometimes.. imagine myself as them, try to think, feel like another person , wonder what they are.. Again not an actor, so I'm called dramatic, emotional, curious, goofball (which, understandingly can annoy people). I watch a lot of movies... if the acting is so bad I can't continue watching. poorly scripted, no real acting.. just boring and fake .. its horrible . Now, on having to "learn" to act I understand if people want to join a club to do acting ... I just think those who need instruction to act out basic emotion , ones that have no... "fire" no presence.. I can't really name it, its just there or not. Well if that is the case, lets not encourage unrealistic Hollywood dreams, however the ones i have crossed paths that believe they're always one step away from fame and fortune, because they can act/sing/dance/do anything for a part.. they are a whole different subject usually titled cluster B personality disorders. Lol Ill try to be positive here... We all have different gifts. finding your true self, what you love & are good at.. that brings real happiness and contentment. .. just try things you have interest in! What one is drawn to, naturally. For me- I know I'll never be a musician, or dancer even though i love it.. but I can ride a horse like I was born in the saddle, motorcycles too, and i learned to knit and felt.. love it! Take classes. Find out if your school offers a drama class. If it does, sign up for drama or theater classes at your school. Learn everything you can by reading and watching videos but it's really important to get into classes at some point in time. I'm not an expert on the subject but I am a working actor. I have always thought that the ability to act drunk is very interesting; you are kind of supposed to imagine that you are drunk, and then at the same time act as if you try to _avoid_ coming off as drunk, which is very paradoxical. I sometimes check my own behaviour when I am genuinely drunk, and I typically make slow, proud and delighted movements, smile a lot to myself, and have a kind of "yeaaah... things are cooool..." attitude, and I can get a feel for that state quite easily even while I am sober.

When I was like 21 or so, I came in to a casting for a pilot of a television series. Initially it was for basically the pretty, popular guy in school. However, there was this meatier part - basically the actual male lead - who was supposed to be gay. So the Director (who actually was present during the casting session) asked me to try reading that part, too. So I did and got cast on the spot. Why? Because every guy they had auditioned applied their version of how they assumed a gay character should be portrayed, and I played the part straight. No shrill voice, no hysterics, basically just a very natural way. Like a different version of myself. Show wasn't picked up but the Pilot turned out quite nicely and I got what the Director was going for with my character.
writers often make an incredible expression subconsciously while they're writing an emotional scene of a story. when acting you need to fully immerse yourself, and use your imagination the same as you daydream about what if I confessed to my crush using your friend's advice as an example. it should work very similarly the same as acting using a script.

That's a great (and VERY relevant) question! When you hear that surprise knock at the door during the second act - it MUST actually be a surprise. You have to NOT know what you already know. You have already rehearsed the scene fifty times - how do you get to a place of NOT knowing the knock is going to happen? By being SO fully present; in the moment; so fully focused on what you're DOING, that you legitimately forgot it was going to happen. How do you achieve this level of focus? Training. That's why we do the repetition exercises plus "doors and activities" in the Meisner system of acting. It takes time to build any habit - you can't just pick up juggling balls and start juggling instantly, you have to do it over and over and over until you even get to the point where you're catching the third ball. Repetition exercises are a lot like that - when you're doing repetition you can't "drop" the repetition. It's like dropping the ball when juggling. You have to stay in full connection with the other actor - even AS you're focusing on your independent activity. And when you're THAT focused on something, your subconscious doesn't know the difference between what's imaginary circumstances and reality, it responds accordingly and generates REAL/GENUINE behavior so that you don't have to fake it. You don't have to "make it look like" you're really feeling something because you are really feeling something even at the early stages of training. And then later when you get more advanced you start doing "emotional preparation" training and go REALLY deep emotionally - while working from an imaginary circumstance with an ELEMENT of truth. But you can't get to emotional preparation without taking that first step, which is signing up for a class. Learning to act is a lot like learning to ride a bike, you can read books and watch videos all day long - you can even spend ten years getting a mechanical engineering degree; learn all about bike mechanics; THEN go study human physiology for the next ten years to understand how balance works - but you're never going to LEARN balance until you get on and ride.
2 things: 1. Analyze the script and know what the scene is about, and 2. Learn the text so well that you don’t have to think about it. These 2 things should help you be present in the moment.
It's a little confusing for me but what I think he's trying to say is when your acting and saying the script, say it how you would've said it. Don't try to do it like that character would do it because your that character. You're the person playing it. So act the way you would act and that's the way that character would act.
2:18 actually I have ADHD so when you said to look at my middle finger I forgot which one was my middle finger and panicked and just went “I think it’s this one, right? It’s got be” and then thought about if you only mean the big big creases or ALL of them and got to about the number six before we we’re moving on 😅 I don’t think acting is for me
That's why I can't appreciate sometimes other actors especially here in the Philippines cuz most of them do big expressions and cry and cry and sob. I like my acting as subtle and realistic. Being in some certain everyday experiences help. I'm not an actor by the way but I dream to be one.

I am an aspiring singer and we are always told not to mimic the pros. Use your own singing voice as they say. I never really thought this holds true for acting, till this sharing. There is a principle called "The Feynman Principle" (named after Richard Feynman) which states that if you can't explain a complex subject in simple language to someone who knows nothing of the subject, then you don't know enough about the subject. But if you reverse this principle it's one of the greatest learning techniques. If you REALLY want to understand a a complex subject, try explaining it in simple language to someone who knows nothing of the subject. I think Kurt has mastered the Feynman principle. I once heard someone that said "When you're acting a character, you are not interpreting the character, you are the character" that helped me a lot to understand that when you're acting you don't really "act" bc it's yourself that it's in action not "your character"
I agree with everything that you are saying, when you are physically doing something you should really do it and not pretend to do it, however, I think the question most beginning actors want answered is when it comes to playing a scene that requires you to be in a certain emotional state how do you really do that without indicating or faking the emotions.

*I am a new voice actor* with a burning desire *to take my skill to the next level*. My question is: How do I act in a more realistically *resonant and compelling* way when reading -- that is, in a situation where the script isn't memorized? By the way, I really appreciate your videos. They are insightful and informative.
While my voice acting realism with memorized scripts is relatively good, there is a problem: *This acting realism does not happen to the same degree when I'm actually reading the script out loud*. It happens when I'm beginning to memorize or have memorized the script. These two modes of acting (memorized versus reading) feel very different in my mind. In fact, I find that when *I've realistically acted a memorized script, and I then try to act it while reading the script the result is not as good as if I'm not reading.
*I've noticed that after I've analyzed the script and eventually memorized it*, the more I let go and imaginatively live the story, (living the character and feeling his intentions as he interacts with other character(s)), I find that I'm even beginning to feel the characters' sensations bodily (breathing, tension or relaxation etc...) which really helps me act with realistic vocal variations (in my pace, pitch, power, and emotional tone etc...). However, I find it very difficult to achieve the same level of acting while I'm reading the script out loud.
So again my question is: How do I act in a realistically resonant way when reading or when the script isn't memorized? My challenge seems to be (and I could be wrong): I have difficulty being fully immersed in or connected to "the theater of my mind" (as I've heard voice actors call it) as I read.
As I said, I'm a new voice actor with a burning desire to take my skill to *the next level*, and I would deeply appreciate any feedback you can give. Thanks

2 things that make acting fake is 1 over act your emotions and 2 lack of emotions
This is very true! Yet I find it almost sad in a way that we have to be "taught" to feel such basic human emotions, and I think our society is reinforcing this even more.. as we socialize with our bodies less and screens more.
Shouldn't it be nearly automatic, to feel our basic emotions, use authentic gesture, expression, tone?
So many people are taught to stifle their emotions and curb their curiosity, creativity, individuality.. often at a young age, to meet cultural, gender, societal "norms"
The honest truth.. really good actors are comfortable with feeling emotions.. understanding, empathic they stand in other's shoes to better learn everything around them. That molds an intriguing, versatile actor. The role may be a homeless drunk .. or a proper Royal from lines of tradition.. each role requiring the necessary knowledge, research, and emotional conditioning to TRULY get in that role. Im sure theres acting vocabulary to better describe, but I am not an actor.
One thing I really respect.. an actor that can go far and beyond " their own self " to transform into a completely different, intricate (sometimes abhorrent) role. Assimilation is the key of acting.
for example.. Charlize Theron in the movie Monster, plays role of real life murderer Aileen Wuornos..
Now, she didn't just jump up there and run lines, acting out a typical role (lets say .. random.. '50s housewife') .. she spent who knows how many hours studying the footage of Aileen from her trial, her colloquialisms, tics and speech , gestures, attitude! ... that was an example of highest mastery in character assimilation. Using your own body and creating the character .. and roles always exist for the character no good person would want to become... but it is needed.
It must be so stressful for some.
I also believe the ability comes naturally to some people. they know themselves, understand others, they're empathic can see into a person in a manner.. and also maybe a little weird, lonely. I study people sometimes.. imagine myself as them, try to think, feel like another person , wonder what they are.. Again not an actor, so I'm called dramatic, emotional, curious, goofball (which, understandingly can annoy people).
I watch a lot of movies... if the acting is so bad I can't continue watching. poorly scripted, no real acting.. just boring and fake .. its horrible .
Now, on having to "learn" to act
I understand if people want to join a club to do acting ... I just think those who need instruction to act out basic emotion , ones that have no... "fire" no presence.. I can't really name it, its just there or not. Well if that is the case, lets not encourage unrealistic Hollywood dreams, however the ones i have crossed paths that believe they're always one step away from fame and fortune, because they can act/sing/dance/do anything for a part.. they are a whole different subject usually titled cluster B personality disorders. Lol
Ill try to be positive here...
We all have different gifts. finding your true self, what you love & are good at.. that brings real happiness and contentment. .. just try things you have interest in! What one is drawn to, naturally. For me- I know I'll never be a musician, or dancer even though i love it.. but I can ride a horse like I was born in the saddle, motorcycles too, and i learned to knit and felt.. love it!

Take classes. Find out if your school offers a drama class. If it does, sign up for drama or theater classes at your school. Learn everything you can by reading and watching videos but it's really important to get into classes at some point in time. I'm not an expert on the subject but I am a working actor. Good luck with everything!

I’m not an actor but I want to be, and I agree that when you get that acting role, now you have to be and feel exactly what your role is, no pretending! But I have a question, I’m a kid and I want to get into acting, where should I start?
I have always thought that the ability to act drunk is very interesting;
you are kind of supposed to imagine that you are drunk, and then at the same time act as if you try to _avoid_ coming off as drunk, which is very paradoxical.
I sometimes check my own behaviour when I am genuinely drunk, and I typically make slow, proud and delighted movements, smile a lot to myself, and have a kind of "yeaaah... things are cooool..." attitude, and I can get a feel for that state quite easily even while I am sober.
I am a singer songwriter and lately i have been given a chance to perform in a bigger stage and sometimes whenever i watch my performances i can feel it’s somehow not very natural. I hope your tip will help me in my performances thanks!
When I was like 21 or so, I came in to a casting for a pilot of a television series. Initially it was for basically the pretty, popular guy in school. However, there was this meatier part - basically the actual male lead - who was supposed to be gay. So the Director (who actually was present during the casting session) asked me to try reading that part, too.
So I did and got cast on the spot. Why?
Because every guy they had auditioned applied their version of how they assumed a gay character should be portrayed, and I played the part straight. No shrill voice, no hysterics, basically just a very natural way. Like a different version of myself.
Show wasn't picked up but the Pilot turned out quite nicely and I got what the Director was going for with my character.

writers often make an incredible expression subconsciously while they're writing an emotional scene of a story. when acting you need to fully immerse yourself, and use your imagination the same as you daydream about what if I confessed to my crush using your friend's advice as an example. it should work very similarly the same as acting using a script.
My favorite acting quote of from The Rocketeer. "Acting isn't acting like you're acting. It's acting like you're NOT acting."

That's a great (and VERY relevant) question! When you hear that surprise knock at the door during the second act - it MUST actually be a surprise. You have to NOT know what you already know. You have already rehearsed the scene fifty times - how do you get to a place of NOT knowing the knock is going to happen? By being SO fully present; in the moment; so fully focused on what you're DOING, that you legitimately forgot it was going to happen. How do you achieve this level of focus? Training. That's why we do the repetition exercises plus "doors and activities" in the Meisner system of acting. It takes time to build any habit - you can't just pick up juggling balls and start juggling instantly, you have to do it over and over and over until you even get to the point where you're catching the third ball. Repetition exercises are a lot like that - when you're doing repetition you can't "drop" the repetition. It's like dropping the ball when juggling. You have to stay in full connection with the other actor - even AS you're focusing on your independent activity. And when you're THAT focused on something, your subconscious doesn't know the difference between what's imaginary circumstances and reality, it responds accordingly and generates REAL/GENUINE behavior so that you don't have to fake it. You don't have to "make it look like" you're really feeling something because you are really feeling something even at the early stages of training. And then later when you get more advanced you start doing "emotional preparation" training and go REALLY deep emotionally - while working from an imaginary circumstance with an ELEMENT of truth. But you can't get to emotional preparation without taking that first step, which is signing up for a class. Learning to act is a lot like learning to ride a bike, you can read books and watch videos all day long - you can even spend ten years getting a mechanical engineering degree; learn all about bike mechanics; THEN go study human physiology for the next ten years to understand how balance works - but you're never going to LEARN balance until you get on and ride.

It's a little confusing for me but what I think he's trying to say is when your acting and saying the script, say it how you would've said it. Don't try to do it like that character would do it because your that character. You're the person playing it. So act the way you would act and that's the way that character would act.

2:18 actually I have ADHD so when you said to look at my middle finger I forgot which one was my middle finger and panicked and just went “I think it’s this one, right? It’s got be” and then thought about if you only mean the big big creases or ALL of them and got to about the number six before we we’re moving on 😅 I don’t think acting is for me
That's why I can't appreciate sometimes other actors especially here in the Philippines cuz most of them do big expressions and cry and cry and sob. I like my acting as subtle and realistic. Being in some certain everyday experiences help. I'm not an actor by the way but I dream to be one.
