    As long as you don't sell them as something else, i see no problem with it. I've made 30+ mods for myself and my family and i like it. Even Seiko logo is ok and i hear Seiko has no problem with it since we market their brand for free. I think modding in order to replicate a watch and then try to sell it for more than it’s worth is wrong. However, building a mod watch into something that will last just as long as these hyper expensive watches for a fraction of the price is pretty damn awesome. I don’t make the money to own a hyper expensive watch, so I just build myself one that will hold up and last just as long.

    People tend to be confused what is the different between Seiko mod vs Aliexpress watch. Seiko mod is when you mod your Seiko that you bought from Seiko and not building it from the ground up using Aliexpress parts.

    • @jeremeyre6599
      @jeremeyre6599 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      Agreed. A custom build is not the same thing as a 'mod.' If I buy a collection of parts from Aliexpress and assemble it into something I think is cool, that is a custom build. If I buy a Seiko watch and swap out handset, bezel, chapter rings, etc, because I think it would be cooler or more unique that way, that is a mod. If I try to sell either one to someone else without telling them exactly what it really is, that's lying and deceiving the customer.

    Eh, I don’t get too worked up about this. I mod/build my own watches for fun. I like to mix & match branded dials with different cases, crystals, and straps. I don’t sell them, and I don’t buy mods/builds from other people. So I’m ambivalent. To your example about that GS “mod”? Well, if I wanted that, I would just get the parts and build it myself. If anyone asks me about it, I’ll just say I built it. Would it be a replica? Perhaps in a very broad definition, but since I will have built it for me to enjoy, then no problem.

    I've thought this for a while and the problem is really only with the buying / selling. If there's somone new to watches and they see a modded watch that says Seiko, they may truly believe it is 1. It's a slippery slope between modded, franken and fake. Unless it's clearly stated during a sale it can certainly mislead some.

Looking for a good-looking piece that I can use and beat up without breaking the bank until I am ready to make the investment in a good piece. I love the concept of modifying a watch to your taste for an affordable price. I believe the issue is if you try to sell it as the real thing or pretend that it is real. That's why I avoided dials with brandings on them.

    All I hear is "but it's different". If you know about watches you'll spot it, all fakes, homages, modded, are about having something personal or having something similar to what you like for an amount of money you're willing to spend, personally I love the speedmaster, but I would never spend 8 grand on one, I don't even think it's worth a 1/4 of that.. a lot of watches, while they do have quite a bit of work put into them, they're absolutely hyped and overvalued, not everyone sees watches for what they represent but as a fashion piece, and that's perfectly okay.
    As long as something that isn't original is selling as authentic, I have no problem with it. (Which even happens with casio w91s..)

No, but the movement alone cost over a thousand dollars for them to make. Once you take a closer look at an Omega or Rolex you start to realize how perfect they are. Never understood these “mods”. A mod is supposed to be a modification. Changing something about an original watch. Putting sword hands on an SKX for example. A domed crystal on a SARB. I see no difference between your submariner and comex and these grand seikos. Both are watches that were never made by the brands printed on the dial. Seems a bit selective to own one but then say the other is too far. The mod community has devolved from once creative and tasteful customization to full on diy replica watch kits with nautiluses and submariners that say seiko on the dial. All of it is weird.

    Respectfully, I think that your sub/seiko used in comparison to the “replicas” is the exact same thing as the “replicas.” Those fake Grand Seiko dials were not thrown onto replica cases, to intentionally mislead people to look like a GS. They were thrown onto replica Rolex cases. It’s the exact same thing… Your Sub-Seiko “mod”, is the same as the Sub-GS “mods”
    I fail to see any differences. A watch on etsy with mixed matched cloned parts from different brands is not a replica. That’s like calling a skx007 conversion kit to a sub as a “replica sub”

      I don't know about that. If these are made and worn in pursuit of an aesthetic, why did they have to include the GS and spring drive logos?
      The sub/seiko doesn't say 'Submariner' or 'Rolex'. It just copies the aesthetic of an old sub. GS and Seiko are not the same thing and by putting a GS logo on it, I think it crosses a different line - whether or not that's OK is really up to the individual, but I do think the GS replica and the sub mod are different things.

      @@Jordan-fg9ccHis Seiko/Sub does in fact say “Submariner”. Am I missing something? Regardless, it’s not an OEM dial.
      Just as you said, if these are made and worn in pursuit of an aesthetic, why did they have to slap “submariner” or “seiko” on the dial? It’s the same bro
      Seiko with Submariner on it is just as bad/the same. That’s just the truth. It’s counterfeit just like the GS dials.

    • @juanroyroy2075
      @juanroyroy2075 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Jordan-fg9cc Yet, I still fail to see why sides need to be taken on this. It’s objectively true that both use fake dials to achieve an aesthetic. They are both using premium brand name (GS)/model (Submariner). Both sellers can be sued. Seiko with Submariner dial is just like the Seiko dials with Comex. No difference.
      The only difference is that it’s obvious to most buyers that a “Submariner” Seiko doesn’t exist. Consumers however should also know that when they buy a GS watch on Etsy, it’s fake.

    • @Jordan-fg9cc
      @Jordan-fg9cc ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@juanroyroy2075 nah, I maintain that there is absolutely a difference between a replica which seeks to copy the real watch 1:1 and a homage/seiko mod that doesn't use the real branding ect. The designs are not copyrighted but the brand names/logos are. You can't try to pass off a Seiko mod that says SEIKO on the dial as a Rolex, either for 'clout' or during a sale. You can do that with a replica and that makes their existence far, far more contentious IMO.

A few months later I have a microscope in my garage, and I can lay a second hand with a wad of rodico in 5 minutes flat. What that's done is give me a much greater understanding of horology and a sense of purpose. The bigger the mod community gets the more new parts become available, I wish more people would get in to the Swiss side of things to bolster availability though, the pickings are slim when it comes to chronograph dials and cases. Trademark infringement requires "use in commerce" meaning people buying goods or services based on the trademark. Using the mark on something for your personal use or as a gift to a friend is accepted. Using it on items you give away to promote your goods or services to grow sales for example is "use in commerce" as it leads to sales, so that is not allowed. One or two friends, is fine, but don't cross the line. If the logo is protected by a copyright also, that is a different story. Many companies also protect their logo's with copyrights if they are sufficiently artistic enough to be worthy of a copyright. Copyright infringement does not require the "use in commerce" clause. Simply making a copy is enough, but there is a "de minimus" exception the courts recognize, meaning the copying is so minimal it is not worth anyones time and such little harm is done, no sit would be worth the courts time. I think making one copy for yourself, and a copy for a friend would fall under this exemption.

    When you buy a car, let’s say it’s a Porsche Carrera, and you modify it to be a GT3, you change the bumpers, wing and wheels. Now, you may ask yourself, why would someone do that? Well, perhaps they don’t have the budget to get a GT3, and the Carrera, aka Seiko, is in their price range to modify. Now 1. The buyer is happy with his/her purchase, 2. didn’t break the bank, 3. If you’re using Seiko components (movement; dial; crown; caseback etc) and the finished watch says ‘Seiko’ on the dial but the end product looks like a Rolex GMT; Submariner; Yacht Master then to me this is a homage as it’s not pretending to be something else.

    So basically the biggest point of contention is the information on the dial itself in this instance. I understand your sentiments. I personally avoid buying such watches as the contradictions would drive me nuts. It may be annoying to know the truth of a time piece that someone is bragging about. On the other hand, watch enthusiasts will and should do whatever pleases them, as long no one is harmed.
    I might be splitting hairs with this but I consider a watch to be modded when a small portion of the original is altered such as replacing the crystal or rotor. Gutting a large part of the watch such as replacing the movement or, combining various major parts from different manufacturers to make a watch that never existed before is creating a new watch. As for replicas, the watchmaker would have to manufacture all the parts (i.e. dial, movement, case, etc...) to the exact (or close to) the original specifications; literally a copy. No private individual have the resources or the inclination to undertake such a venture.
    I suppose the most ethical move for any watchmaker is to remove any branding (or incorrect information) on the part but, most (if not all) modders neither have the equipment nor the skills to do so without damaging the part. Unfortunately, there really is no good solution. The responsibility still solely rest on the buyer to be informed. The best course of action is to take an activist role to ensure fewer consumers get swindled.

Nothing wrong with using an authentic Rolex dial with a different case and movement, but if you apply the Rolex branding to a component that Rolex did make actually make, that is forgery, and is wrong.
    Also, intentionally misrepresenting a custom/modded watch as authentic is wrong.

    I personally have no problem with putting a Seiko signed dial on a movement made by Seiko.
    Also, I think a modded watch is a watch built in a factory and then we make changes to it. When you buy the parts and put it together yourself it's not a mod, it's a build.
    Buying someone else's mods/builds is just plain lazy. This isn't rocket science.

    Im just getting into seiko modding (still in the planning first build stage) and have thought about this a lot.
    What if the community agreed upon a universal symbol or acronym to engrave upon a homage/tribute/ heavily modded watch? Either on the inside or backplate. So at least due diligence is done.
    For example. A gold plated watch case is labeled “GF” or “RGP”. Something like that that says its a mod. Some kind of marking if popularized would be more ethical in my opinion

    I bought a bluesy homage Seiko mod a few years ago just to scratch that Rolex itch. Nowadays I couldn’t go back to picking up another Seiko mod. I’d rather get the Rolex original or even a higher tier original Seiko (alpinist) or even a Grand Seiko nowadays. But hey I’m not judging anyone. I still wear my bluesy homage on occasion even tho I’m waiting for my Rolex to come in.

    If you're sticking a different brand's logo on a product without their permission AND SELLING IT, then it's a fake. Doesn't matter if you put that it's a mod in the description or whatever.
    If you're just doing it for your own use, with no commercial gain? Go nuts. If you go around telling everyone the modded Submariner on your wrist is a real Rolex then that's a bit douchey, but you're not harming anyone in the same way as if you were selling it. IMO.

    A big part of the luxurious watch industry is selling ETA and Valjoux mods.. so no.. what the modding community does isn't going to far.. because it's to a large extent the industry standard.. but I get what you want to say..
    For context I have built a mod based on a sprd76k1 with a rosegold oyster bracelet, rosegold mercedes hands.. a 12 hour rolex gmt style ceramic rootbeer bezel.. I would have wanted a skx007k2 dial with rosegold indices but I don't know where to get it because I want it to say seiko on the dial (althought the crown position is enough to get it away).. only if I switch the case for one with a crown at 3 and the dial so it says rolex, does it become a replica imho..
    I'm now looking into changing the calibre.. an ETA or Valjoux would be nice.. I have no idea thought if that will ever be possible.. and it would then definitely become a frankenwatch.. but I could then use basically any aftermarket dial I like but then the watch would become something I'd proudly pass on to someone and he or she maybe to someone else in due time.. something a seiko movement could never do
    it's about love and appreciation for the craft while getting something of yourself even if it's only the work you've put in, into it as well..

    The whole "hat tip/head nod" thing is a bit ludicrous. Both the Seiko "submariner" AND the Seiko "Comex" watches are misrepresenting Seiko as the maker of those watches. Those Seiko "spring drives" are just doing the same thing in a more blatant fashion. Now, if someone chooses to mod their own watch in this fashion, more power to them. I can appreciate the idea of alternative or "what if" compositions for their personal enjoyment. That isn't the same as someone using established logos to create a fraudulent product and sell it for a profit.

    Just came across this video as I was looking to buy a modded Seiko that pays homage to a Rolex Milsub (a dream watch of mine that is well outside of the realm of possibility for me lol). To me, what is important is that it does not look like a well recognizable status symbol watch like a Batman, Nautilus, or Royal Oak. While those mods are awesome, I feel like they don’t pass the squint test - from far away, they 100% look like the real thing and may give off the wrong impression. With a vintage homages, it’s less about project status and simply enjoying the look and feel of something that you love. That being said, mods are awesome as long as they do not pretend to be the real thing like the GS example you shared.
