  • Round 5 of the 2024 Rugby Championship will be played this weekend and the first game of the round will be played in Sydney between the Australian Wallabies and the New Zealand All Blacks.
In this Pre Game show on Inside Rugby with Mark I give my raw opinions on what I am feeling before this game.
I take a look at the team selections, what we should be watching out for during the game, and what major mistake I think the All Blacks head coach Scott Robertson has done in my opinon.
I look forward to hearing your views on this game. What way do you think it will go. Both teams are needing a win after losses in their last round of the competition.
As a retired Kiwi living in Mexico I am just trying to play a small role in helping the great game to grow across the world.

He’s given debuts to Tosi, Bell, Darry, Sititi, Hotham, Ratima and Proctor, and given big minutes to low capped players like Tamaiti, Aumua, Finau, Blackadder, Perofeta and Tele’a. Not to mention regular starts for DeGroot, Vaa’i, Clarke etc and the return of Sevu, we can see a gradual change in selections which is smarter than just swapping the whole xv.

@BraziwiSteve If I may respectfully respond to your comment. Of course only sharing how I see it. I for one are not suggesting swapping a whole bunch of players. Yet we see certain players who have been disappointing in several games, to name a few DMAC, Perenara, Telea, Reece, and yet we see them back in the mix again. Players like Love havent got a go, and Proctor played against Fiji, did a great job and then he´s gone again. The point is by rotating players even in the big games you get the answers your looking for. Darry stepped up, Vaai stepped up, Williams stepped up, Sititi stepped up, (he should be at 8 not 6)

I never thought Foster was the best choice for All Blacks coach but there was good sense in the continuity approach to picking the coaching staff. Robertson should know this because Canterfbury had a very stable system for many years and it was this that contributed a lot to the continuously high level of performance from the whole system. They built a machine you could feed new talent into and produce winners.
By contrast, letting the entire coaching staff leave and be replaced wholesale every time the head coach changes is proving to be less than optimal so far.
It's not only Robertson that needs to learn how to perform at the highest level, but the Rugby Union as well. Letting a newby international head coach pick his own staff just doesn't make sense. Having them both doing this at the same time is a double whammy of below par performance.

Good comments Mark. We seem to have moved to an environment where it is acceptable for the AB coach to learn international rugby on the job....instead of picking a hardened and sharp internationally experienced coach for this pinnacle role. Hence we are making errors in selection, playing players out of position, not rewarding form etc. I am not convinced we have a masterplan here.

@@insiderugbywithmark As a Blues supporter, I still think Razor is the right coach. His problem is his ability to select. At the Crusaders he had a team of All Blacks, built by Deans and Blackadder, but hasn't had to build a new team. Hence the benefit of him being an All Black assistant so he could learn and select on the job. Right from the beginning, I felt Sititi would be a good 6 if developed. I am adverse to playing players out of position, but Kaino, Collins were both 8's who played 6 for the All Blacks. If we go back, Tana was a wing, Corey Jane was a fullback, and numerous others. Sititi is talented enough to play there. If Razor can admit he was wrong, a loose forward trio of Sotutu at 8, Sititi at 6 and Savea at 7, would be dynamic, attacking and would create all sorts of problems for opposition defenses and attacks. Maybe even, and this will be really unpopular, Lakai at 7 and Savea coming on as impact for the last 30 minutes. Jacobson is not good enough to add impact and even though I am an Aucklander, Papali'i would only be back up. That was hard to say 😂

Razor is trying to find that winning culture he had at the Crusaders. At the Crusaders he would give opportunities to new guys and they would all fit in seamlessly into the team because they were winning. He's now searching for his best 15 and in a team(ABs) that's not performing well. I think bringing in guys slowly is frustrating but it's probably best. Each Test now feels like a Q&A - I hope he gets it right.

The difference is Razor inherited an already super successful franchise from a Blackadder and Blackadder from Dean's before that. These coaches have never had to really rebuild a team from scratch, and their lack of faith in selecting and developing our local talent is shown by their refusal to move on from players who are well and truly overstayed their welcome.

Its bewildering to me that Razor hasnt introduced some more players after our last tests against the boks.Depth depth depth. Some players in this team have had a dozen tests to prove themselves and have come up empty surely giving a player 1 test to prove themselves isnt much to ask especially recently with all the Ls we are taking at least we could of blooded a few more players .It seems more of the same from Razor which weve had for years now.I cant help but think if Jamie joseph and Tony brown were in charge Im pretty sure those 2 wouldnt bend to outside influences which are maybe involved in Razors decisions ?im not sure but Razor the All Black coach seems nothing like Razor the crusader coach which is who I thought we would be getting.Ill back Razor to the hilt cause hes our coach I just hope he takes the shackles off.I 100 percent agree with everything youve said on cane, dmac and the midfield!!!theres a doco on youtube when Razor coach the baa baas against a new zealand 15 ,Razor is in a team meeting for the baabaas talking about dmac who was the 10 for the nz 15 Razor clearly says to the baabaa lads"when dmacs under pressure he tries to win the game by himself and makes mistakes"!! Lots of talk around change and hard conversations. NZ don't have any enforcers in the backrow anymore. Think Kano, Collins, Brooke, Kronfeld, Mccaw. One feels that it is almost illegal to criticize Razor. To be completely honest, the man can barely string words together after his losses. No disrespect but winning multiple Superrugby titles in your own country after saying that South African teams are not on-par looks a little bit weak right now.

He’s particularly adept at getting teams loyal to him which requires showing faith in experienced players to come right and boosting the confidence of young inexperienced players by not applying the sink or swim strategy. They can't win the RC now anyway so this would have been a great opportunity. Guys, let's not forget that this is Razor's first year as head coach. It was never going to be easy, and we shouldn't expect to win every game in his first year. He was never going to make drastic changes like switching the entire starting lineup. Remember, this is not fantasy rugby. Teams are not only chosen based on individual player performance but also on how well the players work together. Many of you are calling for players like Rieko out of the team or Jordie to be benched, but we have to realize that these combinations may not work for Razor and his game plan. He has his own playing style, and our ideas don't necessarily fit into that. We are fans for a reason, and he is the head coach for a reason. Let's cut him some slack; it's his first year in charge, for goodness' sake. As an All Blacks fan, I don't like losing, but I understand that he needs time. The first year is never easy, but we can start criticizing him and putting him on the hot seat from next year onwards if he can't deliver.

I have no doubt that Razor is the coach for the job and every coach needs time to get his plan working. The issue I have is his selection policy. He said players would be picked on form. Can't pick form players if they haven't played. He laid down a rule that players had to be good both sides of the ball, then he chose players who hadn't shown that. He told us the captain would be the best player in that position. Scott Barrett hadn't played all year so he wasn't the best in that position. Currently, on what we have seen, he would be on the bench as the third best, but when Tuipulotu is fit he would be the fourth best in the squad. Make the tough selections Razor. We got told that was something we could expect from you. So far Ardie would be the only vice captain who you would have on the field.

They have mostly used the same group of players for the two tests vs SA... he should have a good idea what these guys can produce. If they win v Aus... with this team.. its to be expected. So Im not sure he can take much from it. But if he tries a new 10 / 13 , for example..and they stand up and produce a great performance.. that then starts to grow his squad depth

This has been repeated by experts through out time "you learn more from failures" look at the all blacks team under foster at the world cup and compare that same team against Ireland in wellington completely different because they had time together to learn and grow. @@insiderugbywithmark comes good? Let’s look at the facts. Razor inherits a team without strength in depth due to huge players moving abroad.
ABs lost by fairly small margins against the boks who are clearly the world’s best. Back to back world champions. Huge strength in depth and a coach that’s been there for years.
      The negativity is actually excruciating.
They were finding their feet against England, and got results. Fiji posed no problems really. Loss to pumas was a low point. Emphatic victory in the next test.
Dropped 2 losses away against the world best. By small margins.
Quit with the negativity. World Cup is a long time off.

@FrozenSurf hey thanks for sharing your opinion, despite the tone,
AB´s lose to Boks when should have won both games. Mis management of the bench in game two really showed, and playing a No 10 who is simply not up too it had a big impact on the series as well.
The emphatic victory against the Pumas was good for 45-50 mins then the Pumas got their act together won on the scoreboard for the remainder of the game and the AB bench was MIA.
Dont construe constructive opinions as negativity, you want to be the best rugby nation in the world, then constructive feedback and inputs is the first thing you need to embrace as a team.

NZ has some of the best players in world rugby, so the conservatism in not blooding new players is frustrating.
    - Going forward I see the locks akin to Darry/Lords with Vaa'i as an impact player covering BS/Lock. Personally I think locks need to be 2m/115 kg plus and in the mould of Retallick/Whitelock. Scott is just not doing it for me.
-Lomax/Taylor/Lomax are world class, I would like to propose the Nuke squad of Williams/Aumua/Tosi although I do prefer George Bell at Hooker
    - For the back row I would like to see in the future are Blackadder or Vaa'i (bs) Satiti (8) and Ardie (os)
    - Cortez is good, but he now needs to play some running in his game, but prefer Cam and Noah. I would suggest he will be played a long game in the first test to gain more experience. Noah to replace TJ for the second test against the Wallabies.
    - Would like to see BB starting at 10, with the aim to bring in new 10s like Plummer or Perofeta. Damain is an impact player.
    - Inside centers - always playing out of position. JB I think is where all the problems start from distribution to line penetration. How we miss Nonu an Snake. Reiko and JB on the bench as an impact players. I like ALB and Proctor as being big boys who will do some damage.
    - Back line - can't complain but Ruben Love to FB.

I dont back DMAC as a starting 10 because what I have seen of him when he gets pressure he loses his sound game management thinking, and it also affects his kicking, passing etc.
I dont think BB is the answer either at 10 for the AB´s. As we head toward 2027 RWC I would like to see various 10 options being trialed so we can see if there is a natural born winner there. I hope that clarifies a bit.

I don’t think that NZ will ever risk “giving up” Rugby as a sport, but when I watch other shows I get the feeling that some of the commentators have forgotten what it was like to support the ABs before 2011. Look at South Africa they had a horrendous run from 2010 to 2018 and it was only going into a very dark place which caused the changes to happen which has made them the squad they are today. The NZ executives do not seem to get a fraction of the flak or repercussions they deserve for all the cr.p they created for our most esteemed opposition!

We were told that Razor was capable of making the tough decisions for the good of the team. So far, the tough decision has been to get rid of the only assistant who challenged him. Everyone else is a yes man. No manager, team leader can make good decisions without someone who gives a different perspective and Razor got rid of that person. Maybe that was the real conflict, MacDonald wouldn't just say yes and gave his opinion. May also be why Razor is so conservative.

This side could do very well in this test but sadly as you state Mark its about growing the new stocks coming through. There's a high probability this might happen as the Wallabies have a long road ahead of them to becoming what they once were. I think if the ABs win convincingly I'm not sure thats a good thing because it'll validate selections and keep players/coaches comfortable certainly take pressure off them. I completely agree with your statement re S Barrett. He is an outstanding world class lock. His leadership is in question. Capt should be Savea who is proven leader and take the burden off Barrett. Barrett is also not a blind side flanker. The back line selection is simply uninspiring - J Barrett and Ioane have actually played to a degree which justifies dropping them out of the playing squad completely which should be a good thing for them both long term. Ioane sadly is like Jordan, being played out of position. He's a proven winger and is being let down by positional selection. DMac hasn't fired at 10. He hasn't serviced the midfield or attacking pods like we're used to with Mo'unga which flows onto the 3/4s. Jordan at wing continues to frustrate me I know you disagree however I find your logic applied to his selection at wing to not stack up (respectfully 😊). Hes a full back through and through and earned his ABs selection as a full back. Easy to judge on his recent outing in Cape Town and write him off there. In that test specifically the back didn't fire. Like other we want given opportunities, he should be granted additional opportunities as well at 15. Overall though Mark, I can't fault your general outlook. Selection at front row is great, locks are great and loosies need to be gigged around with the likes of Finau given another crack at 6. Setiti is an exciting prospect I hope if the event he has a poor performance people don't immediately write him off as a one hit wonder. I would have loved to have seen B Barrett, Clarke, ALB, Proctor, Ioane/Narawa and Jordan in as the backline with Hotham, Plummer & Love given consideration into the bench. Oh well lets see.

Lets agree to disagree on Jordan.
The backs are where the roots of the problems are, and so far, except for 40 mins at Eden Park they simply have not fired. As we all know, a general at No 10 is required and DMAC just isnt that guy.
We have to really think how BB will be used come the big dance in 2027.

@@insiderugbywithmarkThanks for your response! Agree to disagree, I can live with that :) Forwards have been great. Interestingly enough, DMac at 15 is a better option given his play style as his effectiveness under the high ball. The backline combinations is where attention is needed. • @randomlyfactual1943

I think if this fixture happened before the back to back losses against the Boks, Razor would have been more liberal in awarding some caps to some greenhorns. As things are now, Razor is under significantly more pressure than he would have liked to be.
So when I'm assessing his team setup, im looking at it through the lens of the wooves being at the door, that this is nut cutting time and that this game is a must-win. And in my layman's view, this team looks like they can at least do the business and beat the Wallabies.
Now here is an interesting question for you, Mark: lets say the AB's come out storming and they beat the Wallabies by 30 points or more; does this maybe hurt them in the long run? Does this mean that Razor might then stick with these players despite being shown up in the last couple of weeks? And can a massive win maybe dissuade Razor from experimenting?

Iaone should not start. ALB has been good and should be given another chance.
Dmac has hardly done anything wrong and B Barrett has made his share of mistakes. Forget about Harry plumber yet, he needs to be integrated slowly.
Proctor should be on the bench, Savea at 7 sititi at 8 and 6 could be Blackadder when fit.

When Scott Robertson was announced as NZ Coach even before RWC 2023 the amount of hype + therefore pressure on him straight away was something that jumped out at me - no idea how any mere mortal can be expected to match up to that expectation. God help him if NZ + Ian Foster had actually won World Cup (as they so very nearly did) - had they done so not sure to where exactly Robertson would have been expected to progress them. As it is he can only take them one step further even in a best case scenario. Way too much pressure put on him + team IMO / seems always thus in NZ rugby.

At this point one can quite confidently say that this is a coach who appears to have poor strategic nous, and does not have the wherewithall to ressurect the ABs. He's coming across as a somewhat paranoid individual too. We're seeing the product of fear and incompetence in these selection choices. It puts into light his efforts to get Mounga back earlier this year, he lacks vision and balls. He wants loyal soldiers and leans on those who have previously been loyal to him, or the old stagers who have done it previously.

He had a mandate to re-fit the entire programme, the support for him woulkd have been there to do that, but instead he's chosen to scurry for cover. It's a massive dissapointment. We needed a Baby Blacks revolution following the incompetent reign of the previous regime, and there's talent ithere to do it, but we have to match it with coaching talent and unfortunately Razor is showing he doesn't possess it.
"There's that saying: "It's better to die on your feet than to live on your knee's?" There's a good chance that we'll lose three of those tests in the northern hemispere later this season, the approach that Razor is taking will make that look worse than it already is.

I tell you what if he looses the Bledisloe it will be a no go for ABs. They are not underestimating the wallabies that's why we have some experience in this team. However in the second game I see him putting in younger players like even Hotham just as an example

To me the issue positions are still ; no6,no 10,no12,no13,no15.We have a pack the match of anyone, the issues are really the backline formation.

@lockk132 thanks so much for your comment. The forwards are going better than the backs, yes.

I see why Razor has gone with his selections as people have mentioned he needs to win and he’s desperate as his job will be on the line if he doesn’t, but I agree with you, this team isn’t the future and our backs especially are seriously lacking. From 10-13 just doesn’t work and isn’t effective. Reiko and Jordy have been used for the past 3 years and have shown they aren’t quality centres. The problem we might have now is if they win by a good margin Razor and Nz will call this “Progress” when in fact Aus are the 9th ranked team and seriously underperforming. If Razor keeps this team against NH we will win only the 1 game against Italy IF we are lucky.

@Scrotomus thanks so much for the comment. As you will know our thoughts are pretty aligned. Not sure if Razors job is on the line, but there could be some interesting opinions flying around if the ABs were to slip up on Saturday, 4 losses from 5 games wont look good on the report card.

@@insiderugbywithmark I am quite disappointed with Razors tenure so far, he hasn’t shown any point of difference from Foster and his selections. We have so much talent sitting on the bench watching the same old guys lose over and over and still no desire to change I do wonder why this is?. As you mentioned Cane is gone this year so why are we even bothering?. Again Reiko and Jordy have been a massive let down since their switch to the midfield but no push to try anything different. I am quietly thinking a loss to the wallabies wouldn’t be that bad and maybe force his hand to ring in some much needed changes.

@@insiderugbywithmark It will be interesting if you could interview him and get his views on rugby and staying fit. Sadly many rugby stars of the past didn't even reach age fifty (Jonah Lomu, Joost vd Westhuizen, James Small, Chester Williams etc)
