This is one of the coolest episodes we've ever made! I asked Greg to take us under the wing of a parked plane and he didn't disappoint. Part Two of this interview is coming out next week. Enjoy
I’m also curious about the impact, short-medium term, of online communication platforms like Zoom and Google Meet. You can eliminate a lot of non-essential travel through those, and that trend is only expanding into personal and educational travel. High level business and pure leisure will remain core markets for commercial airlines, but the rest is giving way to influencers, entertainers and other corollary products like freight. The latter saved the industry during Covid19, and is a growth sector.
Would love to see investment in long haul flights out of Christchurch, 787s out of Wellington to Melboune, Sydney and Brisbane would be excellent too even if it was just seasonal.
Another good interview Madison If international fares dont even cover the cost of capital (as greg said), why the heck are they still doing it? And if international is 2/3 of their business (as greg said), this explains the price gouging on domestic fares. But he goes on to say he wants to expand international, which brings his initial comment into serious question I think if greg has to refer to the cost of drycleaning affecting their business, he is taking the mickey.
Having just completed a mangement role in an Australian aviation business , the cleaning costs are actually extremely high ..I always hang my washing out to dry...
@@struanrobertson2609 really..... It's $20 a jacket. 3 jackets per plane. And unless the pilots are really messy, they dry clean their jacket every 20 flights = $3/flight = $0.012/passengers ticket
Absolutely😮 what a question, Madison! The international airline delivers a significant amount of intangible economic value to New Zealand, including the “country of origin label” (CoOL) brand. I’m not saying it should continue to run at a financial loss. Airline management design the organisation to shrink and expand within tolerances. The fact that Mr. Foran is “frustrated man” is proof that the market isn’t slowing down, and the airline is missing opportunities due to a key supplier’s issues. Since Air New Zealand does have power on demand contracts in place (to my knowledge) and hopefully did on the P&W plant agreement. Revenue may have fallen but I’m not certain that profitability would have been as significantly impacted. Apologies if I’m talking through my hat. 🎩
He needs to be a more aggressive CEO, the new york flights are half empty because qantas are taking potential passengers, qantas needs auckland airport to compete on the NY direct route, block qantas like what qantas does to carriers at its hubs in Australia, make a worst case scenario pitch to the government to ensure auckland airport management falls into line. He needs to head up a group of affected airlines to hold RR and PW to account. Sue them for faulty engines, get GE to back the lawsuit in exchange for supplying all future engine's to all the affected carriers. It aint rocket science
I'm probably going against the grain here but as a long time investor I'm quietly optimistic about Greg's current strategy, you have to give him credit given the cards him and board have been dealt. Flew back from Bali this week on Air NZ. No cup of tea or coffee in morning. Was told 6hr + not enough time to make one. Hmmm 🤔 the standards over all were atrocious. Apparently they must have cut costs

I don't get how Air NZ is not making a fortune. They are enjoying great revenue on domestic flights and airfares are at record highs on international routes. And a reasonably full business class in general attests to a small but loyal customer group. Airpoints mount up reasonably quickly to ensure lounge access, upgrades etc. Definitely a two-way street from end user point of view!😊
Booking ahead costs you more in risk. If you get sick or circumstances change you’ve just wasted your money. Also it’s doesn’t matter if I book ahead three or four weeks the prices are still silly.
I know for a fact people from Dunedin/Invercargill ARE taking the InterCity to CHC instead of being pinged $400 and up to get to CHC by AirNZ, how do I know because I drive that route for InterCity and some are not the low income people either, they tell me they had gutsful of AirNZ
Air NZ is a dog of an airline. I fly several times each year ( for past 40 years) always with Singapore or Southern China Airlines. Better service, better prices. Air NZ has been broke at least three times and bailed out by taxpayers. Needs to be managed by an other airline who really knows how to run an airline. Air NZ trying to be something that they are not and will never be.
@@plazma1215 I have actually flown with Air NZ in the past. After Covid two of my flights were cancelled Singapore gave me an almost full refund within four weeks after a one time application. Air NZ played the fool for nearly two years many phone calls and long phone call waits, as they do not give refunds to their international passengers. Additionally Air NZ have been given close to $2 billion taxpayer dollars under Helen Clark and more recently given another soft loan by Jacinda Arden of $840 million taxpayer monies. Air NZ needs to get their act together or get out of the business.

Yes the business class sucks but it’s being replaced. The free upgrades from air nz to upgrade any international flight is amazing 🎉 - Qantas is luck of draw. Which I’ve only had once in my 5 years with them as P1 and P.
@@bradroberts2465 You better believe I’m “taking the piss” out of you if you think the issues Air NZ are facing are down to Foran being the CEO instead of Luxon lmao
@@bradroberts2465 the service across the board has dropped since Covid. That’s what I’m saying.
Who wants to pay hundreds for a domestic seat. Get real AirNZ.
If I think about business travel, a significant component of bog standard economy class in and out of NZ, (and I speak from experience! 😅) is on Air New Zealand.
And a reasonably full business class in general attests to a small but loyal customer group.
Airpoints mount up reasonably quickly to ensure lounge access, upgrades etc. Definitely a two-way street from end user point of view!😊
They killed the company's economic business model for the domestic sector over Covid. It will never be low cost to travel in NZ again.
Book ahead and it costs a lot less. If you book same or next day flights it will always cost more, and always has.
Booking ahead costs you more in risk. If you get sick or circumstances change you’ve just wasted your money. Also it’s doesn’t matter if I book ahead three or four weeks the prices are still silly.
Stop been so greedy and bring your domestic prices down other wise every one will be catching the intercity bus
I know for a fact people from Dunedin/Invercargill ARE taking the InterCity to CHC instead of being pinged $400 and up to get to CHC by AirNZ, how do I know because I drive that route for InterCity and some are not the low income people either, they tell me they had gutsful of AirNZ
@@thebeerhunter7307Air NZ’s regional routes are mainly for connecting passengers to International flights
“We don’t separate domestic from international”. Shouldn’t they?
It would make my job easier if they did!
@@MarketsWithMadison loving these shows. Keep up the great work. I’ve learned a lot.
no good too much knocking on air new zealand
Go woke go broke. Employ the skills, not race priority.
Nope too expenisve and not needed for such a small population
NZ is actually underserved by airlines
Can you update video names on yt?
Yup thank god
Air NZ is a dog of an airline.
I fly several times each year ( for past 40 years) always with Singapore or Southern China Airlines. Better service, better prices.
Air NZ has been broke at least three times and bailed out by taxpayers.
Needs to be managed by an other airline who really knows how to run an airline.
Air NZ trying to be something that they are not and will never be.
So you never fly on it but you know all about it?
@@plazma1215 I have actually flown with Air NZ in the past. After Covid two of my flights were cancelled Singapore gave me an almost full refund within four weeks after a one time application. Air NZ played the fool for nearly two years many phone calls and long phone call waits, as they do not give refunds to their international passengers.
Additionally Air NZ have been given close to $2 billion taxpayer dollars under Helen Clark and more recently given another soft loan by Jacinda Arden of $840 million taxpayer monies.
Air NZ needs to get their act together or get out of the business.
@@plazma1215Well said, sounds like a whinging Aussie.
@@TonyWhite-x3c still better than Qantas, who took 2 years to process my refund
