    Thanks for the guide! I definitely wouldn't recommend using down-b so willy nilly as it's very readable and punishable. Also, there are so many other useful combos left out! Just goes to show yoshi still has a lot to be discovered!

    • @Dr.Jay.
      @Dr.Jay.  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Evan Edinger No problem, thank you! Yeah I really only like down b as a recovery and mixup tool; like I mentioned in counterplay if your opponent gets a read on a ground pound it’s easy to punish. But, the fact that it can go through platforms makes it much, much better than before even if it should be used sparingly. Combos/strings are so weird in this game that I kinda wanted to leave that open ended. Because everything is strings now (meaning not many true combos) I actually think that memorizing relying on specific combos is not as useful as just reacting for a follow up, at least at this point in the meta. Unlike smash 4, there aren’t very many guaranteed follow ups in ultimate outside of frame traps and on specific characters at certain percents.
      But yes, yoshi is a gold mine in ultimate for sick combos and edgeguards, I honestly can’t wait to see a top tier pro win a major with yoshi lol

    With Yoshi’s double jump, it is now subtractive like in melee. This means that if Yoshi’s 120 unit armor is hit with a 150 unit move Yoshi will only receive 30 units of knock back.
    This helps yoshi live hits he would usually die to as I have witnessed Olimar’s purple pikmin barely make Yoshi flinch at around 150%, jeez
    As a side note, Esam made a video on Yoshi where he mentions some interesting Yoshi tech involving his eggs after you jump immediately

    • @Dr.Jay.
      @Dr.Jay.  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Curduroy I only really played much melee yoshi before ultimate, so I didn’t even realize it wasn’t subtractive before; thanks a bunch for sharing! I’m not sure what tech you’re talking about, I know that Yoshis up b gains more distance after a jump now but that’s not a tech it’s just a buff and it doesn’t have to be immediately after a jump that’s just the best way to keep momentum I believe. Is there some other tech I’m missing? Cant find anything about it on esam’s channel (just looked only one vid on yoshi and it doesn’t mention new tech), and I’m very curious lol. Cheers!

    • @kleyo6765
      @kleyo6765 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Dr.Jay. yeah, egg toss just gives less vertical momentum if not used when rising from a jump, which isn't tech but I couldn't find another word to describe it. As for other techs, the only thing I'm experimenting with is Yoshi's egg roll which has an interesting implication in dash dancing which was discovered in the clip below
      th-cam.com/video/3EmG0JZjyMw/w-d-xo.html
      Yoshi seems to have his "egg roll super jump" back from SSB4, however it doesn't reach battlefield's top platform like it use to. As for this move's use in tournament, I've seen Yoshi players such as Ron from Japan egg roll to someone's shield and safely pressure it with a quick momentum switch. Still, this move isn't the best but it never hurts to know this as side-b is good for getting out of corners even though it is very situational.
      There are new combos involving his new and improved b-air but contact me if you're curious about Yoshi and his changes from SSB4 to SSBU

    • @Dr.Jay.
      @Dr.Jay.  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Corduroy ahh I gotcha. So I know about the super jump (someone explained it to me like right after I dropped the video lol) which I think can be an amazing tool if it is mastered especially against slower opponents (kinda like samus super wavedash in melee if you know it). A lot of the time though it seems gimmicky to me but can be a mix up for sure.
      As for dash dancing, while I’m very curious to hear your thoughts on how egg roll can be implemented I just don’t see it. Maybe I’m not thinking creatively enough but it seems to me like the extra bounce in the beginning, the nerf to direction change, and the (imo) longer than comfortable ending lag on egg roll isn’t as useful compared to dash dancing normally. Especially since his speed has been so incredibly buffed.
      I love yoshi’s new bair and I’ve found a few combos myself with it, and I always love talking and hearing about this stuff. Im super bad with social media so I’ve gotta set up all that stuff (aka no great way to contact atm) but I’m starting a discord for people who love esports theory crafting (starting off with just smash but I’m a fiend for meta analysis in any competitive game so all topics will be more or less welcome) or want to ask questions to a group of people who love theorycrafting. Once that’s up it’ll be a bit easier to communicate, and i think having a group of people work together to figure stuff out could help speed up the labbing process. I’ll be announcing the details of the discord in my next video (not a character guide this time, much broader and generally applicable but overlooked SSBU topic) so if you’re interested be on the lookout for it.
      Again though thanks for the great input, cheers!

    • @kleyo6765
      @kleyo6765 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Dr.Jay. Yeah man, I would be happy to join a theory craft discord group, I mainly study the characters that I play but it'll never hurt to know things, especially since I will know my opponent's character more.
      As for eggroll, I found that if your opponent is shielding there are two things you can do with egg roll. If you're on a platform you can land on their shield and use the "Super jump" to safely apply pressure to their shield w/o getting punished. If both you and your opponent are on the ground and they're in shield you can, A, roll on the ground and go through their shield, or B, just before hitting your opponent's shield jump immediately jump, you will still get the rising hitbox of the egg. After doing this land directly on their shield to trap them in shield stun. After this roll to the left or right to avoid a punish. This applies A LOT of shield pressure and I'm trying to interpret this into my gameplay as it is even stronger after spacing a bair/ fair on shield, and I've even broken shield using this. That's my take on it, the move still is meh but at least it has some use now.
      Also, eggroll has always had that bounce start-up, at least he had that in SSB4. The starting bounce use to be worse than it is SSBU....... I think, not sure on that.

    @ Dr. Jay I like your analysis Yoshi's air speed is incredible, very explosive the fastest in smash bros franchise , on ground he's very quick as well but more powerful in the air and he's a heavyweight fighter.
    Yoshi is a strong fighter that could have a chance to be one of the best fighters in the game if a lot of people would play him. Despite he's huge potential the only problem with Yoshi and this comes from me a main Yoshi, is that he's super hard to get into and super hard to master and he doesn't have the quickest result. You will need cold hard time to practice and get wins with this guy, but if you do put in the time, his end result will satisfy you with a smile. Yoshi's combo games are crazy fast and strong with amazing frame data, but they are very hard to pull of they require serious good reads once you know how to manage I guarantee you, you'll become a scary opponent to anyone.
    Honestly I don't like using Yoshi's down b in the air to KO opponents because its predictable and easy to punish, and it deals less damage with less power, on land it is better because the move is more powerful and explosive it gives a lot of pressure to your opponent because you never know when it will strike and it can shield break as well if all hits connect.

    • @Dr.Jay.
      @Dr.Jay.  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the feedback! I definitely agree with all that, I would say though that yoshi is a lot easier to get into now than in previous games though, especially compared to the game I’m coming from (melee). I also think his down b is better on the ground; but I’d say that just throwing out one or two aerial ground pounds especially when recovering can be a valuable mix up tool to keep your opponents guessing and on their toes.

    This video was brilliant, it covers every facet that makes up Yoshi's overall design.
    I keep trying to tell people that Yoshi is a rush down character. He's neither a guerrilla fighter or a spacie, so avoid playing him in ways that put him in a safe space and quite literally break out of the shell.
    Only then can you cut loose and witness the magic.

    • @Dr.Jay.
      @Dr.Jay.  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah in melee he was a bit more hit and run what with armor, but his combo game is top tier now rushdown is the way to go. Yoshis like an aerial shark, he’s gotta always keep moving lol

    • @ZinfinityX
      @ZinfinityX 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Dr.Jay. I've always found his options rewarding in the Wii U version. When I realized how effective his FAir and new DAir was it was on and crackin. Then I discovered that you can combine jumps with Aerials through playing him since he's already floaty and it's safe on approach when you take advantage of super armor.
      Everything extends into a down B, BAir sent characters downward somehow (no complaints here!), B-Sticking helps for setups and mobility. Every chracter should have a pronounced toolkit that makes playing them viable, but nothing broke the Melee mould like Yoshi, man.
      I noticed that Melee players are all about ground game, taking to the air only for short hops or combo pressure- so playing your own game outside of thier locked in mindset is really liberating.
      Nonetheless, it makes me so happy to hear about his combo game being pushed even further now, that's why I defend Smash 4 to be fun, and this shows that Ultimate's engine is good for high level fun.

    • @Dr.Jay.
      @Dr.Jay.  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very informative comment. Remember though it’s heavy armor not super (I know knitpicky lol) so it’s not as safe in this game I think due to heavy characters being more viable and they can aerial straight through the armor sometimes with heavy armor of their own. I think yoshi has always been underrated, i mean amsa is the obvious example, and although I’ve never competed in smash 4 I’ve played it enough to know that he was a beast then. I like his kit much better in 4 than melee, and I think my favorite part of smash 4 was just how many more characters and playstyles were truly viable than in melee. Only reason I didn’t take 4 further was because Bayonetta/cloud and because I was still absorbed with melee.
      I like that bit on melee players, def agree that we short hop for combos more. Being a doc main in melee meant I spent a lot of time jumping and throwing pills, but yeah being grounded prevented how easy juggling is in melee. I’ve had to adapt to jumping and full hopping a lot more now, jumping is useful for tech skill stuff and mind games (I’ll show what I mean by that in my samus vid in a few days). One of my fav mechanic changes in ultimate is how fast you reach full jump height now.

    • @ZinfinityX
      @ZinfinityX 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Dr.Jay. LOL that ZeroG jump capacity. Unheard of in Melee.
      My brother and I were discussing how the jump+aerial probably contributes to how high characters leap now, that it must be an input window that encourages players to be creative with thier timing. Couple this with dash cancels and the new engine and it really works for explorative play.
      This is a game haha, I will never downplay or dismiss what Melee brought to the table. My only argument is that the same feeling Melee players get when they push the game to it's limit is what early adoptors should be allowed to enjoy when investing in a new entry. Let us take our time and chance on high level experiences.
      Exactly as you said, the roster is expanded to a grip of new viable playstyles and characters. I like seeing all kinds of different characters peppered into endgame brackets during tournaments. Like this is the proving grounds.
      I earnestly look forward to seeing more content and on Samus no less? Bring it on! I'm sure the visual aspect of simulated examples would do the explaination more justice. Sometimes I have a lot to say in a comment, but come back and be like "I forgot to talk about x and y!"

    I personally have a lot of trouble against Yoshi with Dorf and Ike. I'm not sure how to approach the dino at all. It feels like Yoshi's aerials beat out everything and his double jump having armor makes it so hard to punish bad spacing.

    • @Dr.Jay.
      @Dr.Jay.  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Leerimius I think you already figured out why you’re having trouble, both Ike and dorf need immaculate spacing and yoshi is great at punishing whiffs. I’m not the best dorf, but Ike is basically fairs, nairs, and tilts in just about any matchup, especially yoshi. You do anything with a lot of lag like a smash or dash attack and it’s not gunna work out well. Use that big sword to basically control a short zone around you mostly with aerials. Ike’s Nair doesn’t care about Yoshis air speed, and his fair doesn’t care about his aerials or or armor very much. Honestly unless yoshi is zoning you out with eggs, you should wait for him to approach. If he is egg spamming smack through them with a nair or something to approach. Good luck bud, cheers!

    • @HypnotiKSykotiK
      @HypnotiKSykotiK 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your best option for dorf is nairs and Uairs. Their quick enough and do enough damage to be useful. Dorf is scary of the ledge but just gets dinked by yoshi so its best to wait til around 60% before trying to edgeguard hard.

      also it doesn't do damage until you touch the ground (using friction as an excuse for this mechanic im guessing) and so that plus its horrible arial movement only made it a bad recovery option but with all of yoshi's other options its understandable imo

    • @reedceniviva5756
      @reedceniviva5756 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      dair is a solid recovery option because of how long it is out and will usually win against other char up airs unless its a sword wielder, it also maintains areal movement and control so you can we've between platforms or fade away to mix up landings.

    can we talk about how you can’t shield poke Yoshi?

    • @Dr.Jay.
      @Dr.Jay.  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Gill Tibber it’s always been that way, and it’s always been the weirdest shield too. Back in melee you still couldn’t get shield poked, you could instantly drop through platforms while shielding, and light shield lets you slide away when you get hit. My least favorite thing about current yoshi is that they took all that and double jump cancelling away in favor of straight up mobility and recovery which, despite making him easier to pick up than before and arguably much better, I do miss his shield shenanigans. Still best shield in the game tho since nobody can shield drop through platforms anymore (yoshi was the only one who couldn’t in smash 4) and way back in melee and brawl yoshi couldn’t jump out of shield but now his oos options AND shield are bonkers

      @zetton1374 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ThatOneScienceGuy I think it's because her matchups are very dependent on your opponent, for example if ganon goes off stage you can usually gimp him to death while staying safe with fair and bair but a character with good recovery can easily bait an attack, air dodge and still recover, so that's one of her kill options almost thrown completely out the window. Besides that well placed fishing rod casts and down air into smash attacks are her only good kill options, which, if the opponent has high air speed they can punish you hard for even trying the fishing rod and down air isn't safe on shield, so for both of those you'd have to set up from tumble and ledge recoveries. I will say Isabelle is one of the best jab reset combos in the game, her nair makes people tumble on frame 1 of the hit for a pretty long time and the delayed double neutral A combos into smash attack with ease.

    What are your thoughts on options for Yoshi after trying to down air someone and they shield it? So let's say you try to approach with a short hop down air as Yoshi, and your opponent shields it. They will wait for your down air to end so they can punish but you can sometimes avoid being punished by mixing things up. Usually, you can choose which side you land on while using down air, and sometimes you can get far enough away that they can't instantly punish. So is it best to just try to back away after they shield your down air, or are there any other options?

    • @Dr.Jay.
      @Dr.Jay.  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey, I love this question because it brings up an important topic so excuse my very long response lol. So very very few moves are truly safe on shield in this game. Down air (especially short hopped) is generally not safe on shield, unless you move away from them while it’s hitting. You can certainly choose which side to land on and you should usually try to cross up to behind them, unless they have a great back air out of shield. For example I always crossed up marth in melee with doc or yoshi because his back air can’t hit a moving target as easily as his forward air, but not against Mario because Mario’s back air oos is better than fair oos.
      Now while moving away is the short answer to your question, another option you have is to full hop down air. It can auto cancel (i believe, if I’m being dumb and it doesn’t I’ll let you know when i play yoshi tonight and test this out later but it’s def less laggy) so depending on if you fast fall or the positioning you can do a Dair onto shield much safer by following with a Nair right before you land, or landing into a jab, tilt, or grab as mixups. Even if your opponent has a super fast oos option, a falling nair after full hop down air will at least trade or parry in most situations. Honestly approaching from above with yoshi is not the best, so try to use dair less for approaching and more for tech chasing or when you get a read. Yoshi’s nair, bair, and tilts I find much more effective in neutral than dair.
      Also for shield pressure, or really any neutral game pressure, you should always be moving in quickly and drifting away with aerials with yosh. By far his safest attack on shield (imo) is spacing back air. I wish I talked about it more in this video because back air is so incredibly good as a neutral game tool, it’s just not filthy for starting combos like a lot of yoshis other moves.
      Hope you got the info you wanted out of this, cheers!

      Hmm fluid yes, mobile no. Movement is closer to melee now, which is jerkier and involves more darting back and forth. Yoshi is way faster now than before though that’s for sure. I still miss double jump cancelling from 64 and melee, but compared to smash 4, SSBU yoshi is def more mobile. Just takes some time to get used to the new mechanics

Falco is so weird to me idk, he was my secondary in melee along with shiek (they dealt with Docs counters and such) and I loved him but he’s just... mushy now. Like if you took fox and pit and put them together but just weirder. It’s a personal opinion thing, but I think the other spacies are better and I’m not a good fox so if anything i’d do wolf, but there’s tons of material on him out already. ‘Wins or goes even in almost every matchup’... yeah but he loses hard where it counts. Solomaining yoshi is not viable imo. He just loses to ever sword + he loses on fd to almost every high and toptier.
    Yoshi is in the same spot in ultimate as in smash 4. Everybody used to say yoshi was a secret toptier in smash4 but at the end nobody got the results to back it up.
    Sadly it is just not worth picking up yoshi if you wanna win. You would need to have a secondary for sword characters which would have the same matchups as yoshi against the rest of the cast if not better. And at that point you can just drop him and focus on the other characters.
    Also yoshi is so unique that it is hard to play a secondary. It really just slows down your progress.
    Yoshi is so cool but has sadly no place in ultimate aka sword heaven...
