    I think what adam said about reading cues is at least somewhat what they are going for. shirabu says "if tendou picks up on footwork, cues, or timing you are finished," suggesting he is reading cues and using that to supplement his read blocking.
    that being said i think tendou's style here is mostly to foil Tsukki's style of "I only believe what my eyes can see" (as his brother stated last episode.) Tsukki also mostly focuses on touches and setting up the next play as opposed to Tendou's focus on kill blocks

      @@SarahPavanVolleyballyes, the name is misleading but Ukai did say “it’s not just guessing, is reading and intuition, in this case to guess means to assume something”; if it was just guessing it would be instinct, but intuition presumes noticing something and “guessing” what that something means for the play. Again I used guessing but a better world would be intuition. I hope I made myself clear enough.

      and the main difference is that he makes a decision to block before the set, so that he can try and kill all the spikes, since if he waited for the toss to go up, he would have to soft block a few of them (as you can see by his phrase at the beginning saying that the block is a way to score points or smth like that)

      @@SarahPavanVolleyball I am honestly not sure but I think it might have been lost in translation in this two styles of blocking. What they deemed as read blocking, I think, should've actually been *lead* blocking, like they're blocking where the ball leads to after being set. Tendo's style, on the other hand, feels more suited to being called *read* blocking since he's reading the other team's body language to inform his blocks more than he is guessing where to block.

    I love how the intensity and hype of your commentary are also going up alongside the events of the game. S3 is a treat in so many ways, and it’s really cool to see you both getting so much into it. Sarah’s reactions to plays are at least on par with if not more invested (at least visually) than before despite the fact that it’s her second watch-through (and sure, I understand you don’t remember the result of all individual rallies, but still :D)
    33:58 I probably commented on it before, but the subs got it wrong; Semi tells Shirabu to think hard about set distribution, instead of “don’t forget to set to Ushijima”. If anything, he might be suggesting the opposite

    As someone who is bilingual in English and Japanese, I feel qualified to say that the word "guess" doesn't have the same connotation in Japanese that it does in English. Ukai wasn't saying that Tendou was just getting lucky, which is what it sounds like in English. He was giving full credit to Tendou's skills.
    There are a lot of loan words from English to Japanese where the meaning got sliiiightly lost in translation, so it's always jarring swapping between the two for me. Another example I always think is funny is that "sabotage" somehow became a loan word for "playing hooky".

    • @YoonbeenPark
      @YoonbeenPark 15 วันที่ผ่านมา +49

      Agreed. Ukai calling it 'guessing' isn't entirely unfair, but the translation does preclude the 'guesswork' part of it. I think he recognizes that Tendou is both making an educated guess AND directing opponents into his traps.

    • @mauer1
      @mauer1 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +28

      The phrase people would rather understand is "educated guess". Although guess should be good enough, as randomly guessing would leave it up by chance, there aren't actually that many people anymore that do educated guesses and if they guess it's more or less by chance.
      The main difference between guess blocking and read blocking is when he commits.
      So basically he is commit blocking but not onto a player but onto his read and thus is a tempo faster than other read blocks that need to wait until the ball left the setters hands.

    • @withxoutxlife
      @withxoutxlife 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +10

    My interpretation of Tendou's "Guess Blocking" is that he's not making random guesses, but educated guesses. For me, the most important part of Ukai's explanation is "He reads the attack before the toss goes up, and then jumps mostly on instinct." As you saw, he's able to pick up on even the slightest visual cues, and he also takes the current game situation into consideration when deciding where to go. So as others have said, it's not that he's "just guessing" where to go as much as it is him reading the situation and trusting his instincts which are VERY sharp.

I don't really know much about non-anime volleyball but this moment is really inspiring.

    Tendou's style of blocking that is more individual and about scoring points as opposed to taking options away from Karasuno adds to Ukai's earlier statement about Shiratorizawa being an "incomplete" team that uses addition of individual strengths as opposed to multiplication.

  • @FuFightersStudio
    @FuFightersStudio 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    So... Tendo is not just randomly jumping - as they said in the episode, he is reading the footwork, technique and habits of the player - the difference is that instead of waiting to see if its correct he just goes for it. He will say to himself "Well when he is distraught this setter will go down the middle" and just jump on the middle no matter what.
    The reason why his team is fine with a guy just not blocking in any sort of system is that this is the Shiratorizawa philosophy - they dont work on complex teamwork based techniques like 3-man readblocking or narrowing down the course or combo plays - the do everything to limit the necessary player coordination as much as they can and winning through superior athleticism and technique. I actually think its a very smart way to do things at a High School level. It allows players to develop as much as they can for future play and avoids the issues of "well we finally managed to get the third years to do this really nasty combo...and they are graduating" - it would be a lot more consistent.
    I would also say that this philosophy is way more pronounced for a massive school with dozens of players like Shiratorizawa. The chance of a player being on the court before third year is minimal so the chance to coordinate and match dozens of complex plays is nearly impossible if consistency is expected.
    Shiratorizawa is just a rich private school in general - they have great sports programmes, the are also one of those schools with really rough academic side of things - Kageyama got completely wrecked when he tried to take the entrance exam

    As I have in general seen in other comments I think Tendou basically does "prediction" blocking, he doesn't try to read the toss he predicts it instead. I definitely don't think it is an example to follow or a widely applicable style. However I think you can see it as a "special ability" that he can use here. In a way similar to how Grandpa Ukai described Hyakuzawa(2m tall) as that at the high school level, both physical growth and skill level are not complete yet. Because of that a very strong or tall player can dominate more "skilled" teams and here I think you can say that his unorthodox blocking technique can really work well if he is at that high of a level.

    The meaning of the word guessing is not the same you guys understood, it is not random choice, it is picking up cues and processing the thru subconscious mind, the concept of intuition or gut feeling where the “knowledge “ is processed faster than it can surface to the conscious mind and acting on it before it does.
    It is the next level of read block basing the decision on more subtle cues and acting on that on the instinctive level.

    At 14:23 the mangaka is doing an homage to one of the great sport manga's of previous generations. It is a comic "technique" of the genius Hanamichi Sakuragi (from the basketball manga Slum Dunk) that he uses at some point to block. Of course is not a realistic way of blocking even in basketball, but that is how it get's depicted and is hilarious when he does it.

      Regarding the "Guess block" of Tendo, it's more like explaining the difference between read block and a more committed block to me. Rather than waiting the set to see where it goes and moving after that, Tendo uses small cues to predict where the setter will set and starts moving BEFORE the set is done, the thing is he is gifted in how good of a cold reader he is to get information from every aspect of the setter and the spikers formation to make a decision. In spite of how good he is on those predictions, this style is more prone to get lured away with a decoy like Hinata (on the other hand, against Date Tech they mention that is not as easy to trick blockers who read block since he normally wait for the set to move)

    I still love the joke of tendo getting called out by reon and in the dub he says”guess so” just for ushiwaka with his dead monotone voice”puns are the lowest form of comedy” cause he’s the guess monster

    There is a video where Ayumu Murase (Hinata's voice) is singing Tendo's song.
    He sounds so cute when he does which is funny considering who sings that originally.

    I feel that I understood Washijo better when I read the manga, he specifiacally talks about a high school team, a japanes high school team, very few years with a constantly changing team, sometimes it changes in the same year because the third years retire, so he isn't too wrong that with so little time it's better to polish diamonds
    33:59 this makes me angry because it's a translation error, there are huge ones this seasons, he actually said the opposite: that he shouldn't just give everything to him, Semi is a setter but like Suga, got replaced, in his case not because he wasn't talented but because he tried to stand out to much (ironically he had more "screen" time in the manga, so again he was cut out)

    • @ladybookworms
      @ladybookworms วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Yeah that one and the one where Ohira says that Tsukki aimed at the center instead of what he actually said "On the spur of the moment he aimed at the setter" makes one miss the nuance that Tsukki aimed right at Shirabu so he wouldn't even get the chance to set the ball. Damn these silly mistakes, I don't understand why they can't just give the translators the original Japanese script instead they make them translate off what they hear!!

      @@bella-je5yc omg, yesss, Taichi especially, but the rest as well, Shirabu also turns out looking like someone who just knows one move and doesn't think (whenin the manga he was even the only shiratorizawa player we clearly see next to Ushiwaka at first), I'm sure we won't get his future analysis of games to show how smart he is. With Washijo we still have the, ughhh, movie, but I doubt they'll "waste" time for his character

    Their use of “guess” is not in the sense of a blind guess, but more like “intuitive.” He’s reading the offense, like he did when he caught Kagayama’s too-obvious fake, and the “guessing” where to block based upon his instinct. So it’s not so much being incredibly lucky as having great confidence in his subconscious perceptions.

  • @TheAnanthvarma

    i think what they're trying to say with the word guessing is that he is making a targeted guess and choose a spot to block rather than waiting to see where the set goes and doing traditional read blocking

    To your point in the beginning of the episode, when you’re discussing covering a lefty, I’m curious if you know of a current player in professional volleyball that sets a good example of how to make these adjustments defensively? Maybe someone you’ve played against Sarah? (Also if comments have suggestions)

    i feel like most people take the name of Guess Block too literally. theyre really just saying that he is prioritizing the information before the ball rather than the ball itself. they mentioned that its footwork, eyes, body language, and even what someone is "likely" to do such as kageyamas failed fakeout. its not like Read block means you pick up the script and actually read ahead to see who the setter is going to set. its an informed decision thats filtered through intuition.

    Ukai does say that Tendou is using intuition and information, but I think what he means by 'guessing' is your intuition can be completely off - which we see later in the episode. He's watching eyes, hands, feet, taking in a bunch of information, and making a quick decision. When it works, it's killer. When it doesn't, he's a mile away from the ball.

    Note: Satori is a mind-reading youkai in Japanese folklore. Tendou's first name is Satori. His zombie-like mannerisms are basically a big nod to that alongside his ability to guess to the point of almost reading minds. It's a pretty cool characterization.

    for 11:50 To add to what @t3cchan said about English words and foreign language loan words getting imported wonky into Japanese. The Japanese don't just import the words with their popular meaning in the language they are importing from, but the use it in the sense, meaning and nuance that is popularized when that word was imported. Guess is by no means simply guessing as we say in English, but carries the nuances of taking in information and then reasoning, deducing, inferring and then making a presumption or an estimation, basically making educated guesses and taking calculated risks knowing that they are risks.

    The Tsukki-Tendo interaction here has to be one of if not my favorite trash talk moment in the whole show, always makes me laugh so hard and Sarah's and Adam's reaction did not disappoint hahaha
    It always remind me of how Kevin Garnett, one of the greatest trash talkers in NBA history, has said multiple times that he stopped trash talking Tim Duncan cause he couldn't throw him out of his game and Tim's "trash talking" replies were so simple (and kind of polite lol) that it was Garnett who ended thrown out of his game instead.
