I"ve seen this episode at least 30 times now. I tear up every time to Tsukki's moment getting hooked on volleyball. Tsukki sure was misunderstood at first but also mixed in with a healthy portion of growth from his side as well the past 2.5 seasons. His whole character development is so well written. Moments like this are what help me fall in love with the sport of volleyball as well. What a great show!

Tsukki used the step that Kuuro taught him, the block technique of moving the hand at the very last moment...
the moment when Tsukki falls into volleyball,
which Bokuto advised /predicted. This is the best episode of many Haikyu fans out there,
and it's a day that fans have been waiting for years for Sarah to review. Thank you so so much sarah!!
And IMO, Eita is 'what if' version of the character of 'Oikawa in Shiratorizawa' .
His hairstyle reminds me of Oikawa, but his hair color and position as the 2nd setter is like Suga,
and his serve, which is also as Powerful as Oikawa...
Even if Oikawa entered Shiratorizawa, as Ushiwaka said,
Oikawa may have been the 2nd setter in the team like Eita
because coach who prefers the setter who uses Ushiwaka a lot.
I love this show, it enables various imaginations.

fun fact from behind the scene in this one! i saw in an interview with Tsukki's voice actor (Uchiyama Kouki) that everytime there was a scene where all the Karasuno players were cheering, the voice director told Uchiyama to sit it out. for 2 whole seasons. Uchiyama didn't get to cheer with the other actors for 2 whole seasons. so Tsukki's cheer after blocking UshiWaka was built on 2 seasons of the voice actor being told to hold back, then letting 2 seasons worth of emotions out all at once

26:50 That Hinata line "that point was worth 100 points" has much more weight in the manga. When they were at the training camp and Bokuto was giving his inspirational speech, Hinata says something in the likes of "sometimes you score points that are worth 100 points" and Tsukki, just being Tsukki replies like "that's impossible, one point is always worth only one point". That smile shows that he finally understood what Hinata was saying back then. Absolutely beautiful

First, I gotta say Shirabu's "Huh?!" at 14:18 will always be one of my favorite reactions in the show.
And I think my favorite aspect of the show is the character development. The mangaka showed so much patience in giving Tsukki 3 seasons to gradually and naturally grow until finally he truly became hooked on volleyball. It still makes me teary-eyed.

I love how you praise Tsukishima as a resource for his mind, immediately reminds me of how Takeda was calling him "Karasuno's voice of reason", which is so fitting! It's also really nice to see Asahi encouraging him to accept praise, because Tsukishima deflects it very often :")
And Hinata too! Well, he tried anyway, that's what matters :"D By the way, "1 point worth a 100" was a reference to something Kuroo said during the summer training camp; that scene was sadly cut from the anime. Kuroo was talking about how if you pull off a good play when the team is in high spirits or hopeless, then that 1 point would feel like a 100. Bokuto didn't get it, Kuroo realized he blurted it out without giving it much thought, but both Hinata and Tsukki were there listening, and Hinata brought it up again here!

I think for so many of us, we always want to see what we will get for it before start trying to do something. It is what Tsuki thought at the beginning- he couldn't really figure out what he can get from volleyball so he didn't try hard. But bokuto's "that moment" speech motivated him and now the moment finally arrives, Tsuki now can 100% devoted to volleyball because he feels it, he knows what he is fighting for. he will never in doubt again!

One thing I finally understood about the significance of this episode, as Tsukki opens up more to his team, he opens up more to us. We open each season with Hinata's monologue because he is the most receptive to us and the team, and this episode him speaking to us and letting us into this world, is a subtle reflection of him becoming more of a teamplayer, leading, cheering, and playing with them.

I remember sobbing uncontrollably at that scene. I think that's the moment I got hooked completely on Haikyuu!. What I love so much about this moment is that it not only demonstrates Tsukki's growth as a character, it shows how important mentors can be. Bokuto and Kuroo may mess around a lot, but they are the best mentors in the series, and the way they take Tsukki (and Hinata) under their wings makes me appreciate them so much. Furudate-sensei's narrative payoffs are beautiful and top-class.

  • @zze86

Tsukki's moment is widely considered amongst the top 5 moments of Haikyuu and IMO, is probably one of the best character arcs in all of anime. Tsukki is introduced in S1E3 and doesn't fully culminate until S3E10. Almost three whole seasons for his character arc to complete! And yet there's been subtle clues from the very first match against Tanaka, Hinata and Kageyama that despite what he says, Tsukki is a serious competitor.
Also want to point out that despite being a tertiary character with a childish streak, Bokuto (who is depicted like a owl) gives wise and sagely advice to those that come to him. 🤣🤣🤣

What a fun video to watch at the end of the day while having dinner. Loved your reaction, I loveee Tsukki's moment so much. His scream, he got lost in the moment and expressed himself. What a character development!!! One of the "moment"s of Haikyuu for sure.
Fun observations: (Brandon already mentioned this in another comment) We get hints of when Tsukki started planning this, he was ready to give up the first set but seeing Nishinoya's determination woke him up, then in ep 3 we see him trying to figure out Ushiwaka and then Shirabu comes into picture and then something clicks in him, he figured out we need to pressure the setter. Then in ep 4, when Kageyama did that revenge setter dump, he compliments Kageyama because it perfectly put lot of pressure on the setter like he wanted, then again with hinata's freak quick, he enjoyed it and said go wild you weirdo duo, adding pressure again on the setter. He earned that block and then the celebration, was pure joy, the moment he got hooked on volleyball.
after that when nishinoya and tanaka come to celebrate with him, Nishinoya bites his shoulder in excitement, haha.
A question to Sarah: Could you please teach me some indoor rules here on subs and pinch servers. How many times can a pinch server be used? multiple pinch servers in a single set? how many substitutions can be done? same player substitution multiple times? I guess there is no restriction on libero substitution?

For the other players, there are only 6 subs allowed per team in a set. A player can enter the match and exit the match (2 subs used) but once that happens, they cannot re-enter. Technically, 3 different pinch servers could be used to enter and exit the match, which would use all 6 subs. Does that make sense?

    • @girish2754
      @girish2754 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@SarahPavanVolleyball yes, thank you. Interesting, I wonder how they came up with "6" ? hmm, 1 pinch server, 1 sub takes out 4 subs. Maybe they thought let's give them one more chance

Tsukishima is such an interesting character. No one really likes him in the beginning. But slowly the audience understands him and sees his character growth. Even though he is the biggest smart-ass in the show, he really grows on people.
This moment is one of the best in the series. And that's saying something.

In the beginning, I also thought "oh here comes the typical stoic/salty/mean character" when tsukki was first introduced. I still started to like him pretty early on though starting from when they had the 3v3 and he got into it, had to take off his sweater lol. That scene changed my opinion like "oh he's getting into it after all. he might just be a tsundere type" 😆

    • @SpringStarFangirl
      @SpringStarFangirl ปีที่แล้ว +15

You're right. Hinata's weird ass bouncy bounce aside, Daichi is Karasuno's shortest hitter. His block height is quite short compared to everyone else, Noya aside. We actually see the same thing happen with Suga, who also has a shorter block height compared to everyone else, except in that case Tsukishima had that in mind and swapped positions with Suga in order to surprise the attacking team (I think it was Seijoh) and block them.

This scene never fails to make me emotional and tear up. The analogies of him feeling like he can only shine due to Hinata's sunlight (the moon only appearing due to it reflecting the sun) but then also coming into it and recognizing that's something only he can do and coming into his own, and allowing himself to commit to something after the trauma of his past just cumulates so beautifully into his yell of celebration. He tries so hard for the first 2 seasons to deny himself to fully dive into volleyball or anything out of fear of being disappointed from his own expectations and then deciding to go for something that was made out to be a nearly impossible task (block scoring on Ushiwaka) and actually rise up to his own expectations is just so so powerful. I definitely think this is the most explosively memorable moment in Haikyuu and it's really hard to top. But there's some AMAZING scenes in the second-half of season 4 that almost don't get the amount of recognition I feel like they deserve; but probably would get more attention from people that actually play volleyball and can personally attest to the experiences the characters go through in said moments. I'm not going to spoil; but I'm excited for when you get there! Hinata has one moment that's so unbelievably powerful but I think the star is really Tanaka (you'll see when you get there...)

This moment, for me, is in the top moments of Haikyuu, really. To see someone connect with their passion and realize that moment for them, it was everything. I mean, how can it not be? A moment like this might not always be dramatic, it can come in quietly or it can be realized over some time, but when we do, it gives us life, once again. Giving us a purpose and hope and a future.

Tsuki's scream is definitely one of the best moments in the whole anime.
They showed us how he is extremely calm, realistic and we could say kind of a turn off for anyone who gets excited about anything.
He's not the kind of guy that would smile or be happy to win something.
    He doesn't really like anything.
He goes from "It's just a club activity" to finally understanding what being passionate about something is, in just a few seconds. And I like to think he didn't even notice he was going to scream like that until he is already doing it.
I've felt like that only a few times in my life, but it's the best feeling ever.
You just want to scream, run, punch, jump, or even cry. Anything to release the pressure as you finally managed to do what seemed to be so hard or "impossible".

I am pretty sure the author of the Haikyuu manga did that on purpose to have Semi and Sugawara as both 3rd year setters who are pinch servers, and will play setter as well when needed, and also looking like long lost twin brothers.
