Before playing beach volleyball, Sarah Pavan was one of the world’s top indoor volleyball players. She had an impressive professional career in Italy, Brazil, South Korea, and China, and represented the Canadian Indoor National Team.

I really appreciate that you guys have a keen insight into Ushijima's personality and intentions! Most people would just quickly and automatically put him in the "arrogant prick" box and leave him there without genuinely thinking about how Hinata's actions look to someone as experienced and skilled as he is.
I also like that you acknowledged that Hinata isn't quite there yet, and honestly, I'm proud to say that, in general, the Haikyuu fandom would agree with you there. It's just simply facts! Yes, he's the protagonist, and yes, we're seeing this story through his point of view, but I think it's good to acknowledge that, as of now, he's not that good yet, but he has a lot of potential and room to grow. That makes Haikyuu so exciting to watch - seeing how they all grow and achieve their maximum potential!

For Ushijima, yes, he is not that polite but also he is not trying to be rude. For him, it's all just a matter of fact.

After two seasons of the show building up Ushijima to be almost an inevitable force of nature, it's crazy how when we finally get to see him play he manages to EXCEED all of the hype.
I am a person who likes the opposite pattern filled by players who are very good at defense
and then i can see adams gonna like tendou for next episode😂

To answer Adam's question, at this point all we know is that Shiratorizawa made the semifinals at nationals last year
And that they absolutely dominate.
During tsukki backstory they mention karasuno is a team that could rival Shira. So they kinda hint how devastating their team has beeb

I know Sarah thinks of herself as an Aone-type, but matching blond eyebrows and height aside, I really think she's more of an Ushijima, with little bits of Kageyama & Kurō.
Naww, from her first reaction Sarah has definitely said that she identifies with Ushijima cause she was more of the point scorer ace type. She identifies with Aone too but from the simple fact that they both have white/blonde eyebrows and are super tall lol

I love ushijima so much, he's just so simple, he's an absolute embodiment of pure strenght (I mean I know he worked hard on his technique and all too). Where Okaiwa was a pure strategist Ushiwaka is the simpliest kind of warrior going in an swinging until there is only one person left standing.
I absolutely love the comments from the stands. Yachi, Tsukishima’s brother and the alumni guys explain very well and Saeko is such a refreshing touch on the episode!
Ushiwaka serves and spikes like his wife left him for a Mikasa ball.
a refernce to Ushijima is Yuji Nishida or Kento Miyaura from the Japanese National team both are left-handed Opposites ( I think)
Japan's best hitter -- a generational talent for sure, there's so much to appreciate about Ushiwaka which the manga only deepens. I love Shiratorizawa, coach Washio, everything about them is a perfect foil for Karasuno, their whole ethos, and the character arc of Hinata in general. Nekoma is the situational and sentimental rival, but it's truly Shiratorizawa at the most fundamental and philosophical level.

Good observation , Adam!! The Shiratorizawa volleyball team are "big boys" because of the head coach's approach and mindset to the game.
MINOR SPOILERS IF YOU CONSIDER HISTORICAL DATA SPOILERS:
Ushijima's ranking is as follows:
Miyagi Prefecture: he's the number 1 ace
Japan: he's the 3rd best ace.
As for his team's ranking, the anime never explicitly says, and I don't know if the manga ever says. But I'd wager that we're supposed to infer that Shiratorizawa is among the top 10 high school teams in japan, but that they're not expected to reach National Finals...
This is a bit of a misconception. We are never actually made aware of any order of ranking between them. All we know is that Ushijima, Kiryu and Sakusa are top 3, and that Bokuto and the other guy are both described as being "just outside of the top 3" or "top 5".
Also, according to Tanaka, Shiratorizawa has ranked among the top 8 in Japan for several years. Meaning they at least make it to the Quaterfinals of Nationals regularly
I love how they just get the show so much better, or rather differently, than the average viewer 😭
Like I know it's to be expected, but the difference in approach makes it so interesting for us viewers
I agree with Sarah about unfounded confidence. I have seen too many times when high confidence from a newbie backfires. Mostly I don't have a problem with that, let them do their mistakes and learn from it. But sometimes things end up in a disaster for everyone.
Also, Shiratorizawa reaches at least quarterfinals at nationals. That was mentioned before.

Even though Shiratorizawa is an enemy team, I just loooove the way Ushiwaka's strength is portrayed. It gets my blood pumping with how epic it is!
I love this episode. Hinata is far and away my best beloved character and I will defend him to the death, but my lil son deserved to get ROASTED this episode and he got it. Poor chicklet, give him time. Also love how much Adam loves Shiratorizawa already. I hope you guys enjoy the theme songs, I love them so much! Hikari Are (let there be light) is so epic and the ending song is such a bop, I sing it to myself quite a bit.

Tendou has to be one of my favorite characters. He's just so much fun to watch.
Ushijima is the best. I wonder who is going to pick him in the draft at the end of the season. Imagine Wakatoshi and Iwaizumi together.

Ushijima is too good of a draft pick. Whomever chooses him would need to let the other person pick the next 3 or 4 players.
I think everyone agrees that at this point Hinata is above average only because of Kagayama. Bad on D and without the super quick he'd be an ok hitter.
Ushijima is right that Hinata has too much confidence based on his level of play.
Oh Adam is into seeing some trash talk. This is going to be a fun season. LOL

You are 100% correct when saying Tendou reminds you of Ryuk huahauha I even think the author took direct inspiration from him. The hair, the quirkiness, the creepy vibes and the sense of humor, even how they both like saying "Omoshiroi" for amusing/interesting! I wonder how Sarah will perceive him on the second watch now that she knows about Ryuk as well 😂😂
Soooo….. this isn’t really a spoiler. Shiratorizawa does pretty good at nationals. Over the last three years, they have represented Miyagi on the national stage. Usually placing top 4, or top 8. Been Ushijima a constant member of the U19 Youth Team, which made him a top 3, and top 5 ace alongside Bokuto, and a few other players you will get to know soon, alongside their schools.
Alongside Kanto/Tokyo Region, Miyagi is one of the “powerhouses” that stay on the top. Eventually, we could talk over THE Seeded teams, which Shiratorizawa tends to be a part of when it comes to the national competition. This time though, they weren’t as prolific as other years, such as the Inter High competition where they managed to represent Miyagi, but fell to other teams, who we may see soon, and some who haven’t been animated yet!

@@smashbrandiscootch719 coach Donny is a volleyball coach who watched the show as well. He mentions very often the amount of steps that servers use for their approach. He mentions people doing 6 step serves are uncommon, to practically non existent. He's a blast to watch, definitely recommend

chaotic suga has always been a thing :)) sure he is a team player, very kind and understanding of everyone but he's also chaos hidden under a mask of angel. I knew this boy was all degrees of silliness the moment he greeted everyone violently when he subbed in for kageyama in that first math with seijoh. or even earlier, the first time hinata and kageyama met kiyoko when they were banned from the gym, suga let kiyoko in before instantly slamming the door in their faces with the derpiest look on him.
4:12 This may have been mentioned, but the author said that at the beginning of the manga, Suga was made out as a kind, beautiful, almost ethereal being. He felt like he needed to change that and brought out other sides to him as well, as we see here when he yells at them😂
