If you are looking for historical places I suggest you to go to Anuradhapura and Pollonnaru area. Where you can find lot of ancient historical sites.

@@GabrielTravelerVideos it's fantastic, we spent a month there in early '91 Try to find that benedictine monestary that was the ex mansion house of lord vickers in the tea growing highlands, you have to walk a mile or so to it along a railway line i remember but well worth it & the monks are very freindly & will show you round. Have a good xmas wherever you are mate.
So nice to see a little part of Dodanduwa. I became good friends with a family living by the lake in the jungle there. I really to go back and see if they are still there.
Hi Gabriel, Beautiful episode! Srilanka and Kerala landscapes are very similar. Also from what I saw from some Srilankan food blogs the food is also very similar.

Hi Gabriel, very nice riding around on a bike to visit beautiful locations looks very mellow a place where can unwind and relax. It will be nice to see the interior of the island, like most islands, that's where you are going to see mountains and caves.

Gabe, to see the older Buddha statues that are a few thousand years old you need to go to Anuradhapura and/or Polonnaruwa in central Sri Lanka. You wont find much in the South or West.

@15:40, He just wanted to tell you that in Hikkaduwa, Full of Russians and Ukranians and American are hardly visit this place which is true. In Hikkaduwa, Mostly a tourist area with Russians and Ukranians.
I've been hearing lots of Russian being spoken. I wonder how the Russians and Ukrainians get along while on vacation?

Nice to see you in a fresh, new place! I have been 4 times to Sri Lanka.You're right, much cleaner than India. How does it compare to the Phillipines? I haven't been there yet but all the travel blogs seem to suggest it's pretty filthy!
I'd say the cleanliness in the Philippines is a bit lower than Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is more similar to Indonesia in terms of cleanliness. The cleanest in Asia are obviously Japan and Singapore, while the least clean is obviously Bangladesh.

Thanks. The problem is then I can't change the direction of the camera to show what I want to show, it's stuck just facing forward.

There's several cave temples on the Wikipedia list of Sri Lanka caves. Some have some great stories associated with them.
Aluvihare Rock Temple was the historic location where the Pāli Canon was first written down completely in text on ola (palm) leaves. Many monastery caves, some of which exhibit frescoes are situated near this temple.
Golden Temple of Dambulla is a World Heritage Site (1991) in Sri Lanka, situated in the central part of the country. This site is situated 148 kilometres (92 mi) east of Colombo , 72 kilometres (45 mi) north of Kandy and 43 km (27 mi) north of Matale.
Dambulla is the largest and best-preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka. The murals cover an area of 2,100 square metres (23,000 sq ft). Human occupations here may date to pre-history.
Batatotalena Cave, also known as the Diva Guhava in Buddhist literature, is a cave system in Sudagala, 8 km (5 mi) away from the town of Kuruwita, in the Sabaragamuwa Province of Sri Lanka.
Batatotalena Cave is believed to be the cave in which the Buddha spent the day after placing his footprint on Adam's Peak, from where he supposedly proceeded to Dighavapi.
And, also linked to Batatotalena Cave is Adam's Peak, a 2,243 m (7,359 ft) tall conical sacred mountain located in central Sri Lanka.
The mountain is also seen as the abode of the deity Saman.
Access to the mountain is possible by 6 trails: Ratnapura-Palabaddala, Hatton-Nallathanni, Kuruwita-Erathna, Murraywatte, Mookuwatte and Malimboda. The Nallathanni and Palabaddala routes are most favored by those undertaking the climb, while the Kuruwita-Erathna trail is used less often. These trails are linked to major cities or town BY BUS, accounting for their popular use.
Deeghawapi (Pali, "long reservoir") is a Buddhist sacred shrine and an archaeological site in the Ampara District of Sri Lanka, boasting of historical records dating back to the 3rd century BCE. Water reservoirs, called "tanks", were an important feature of the hydraulic civilization of ancient Sri Lanka, and temples and cities were built around them.

16:14 There was Sri Lankan Civil War from 1983 to 2009 there. during this time at least 70k(up to 120k) Tamilians have been killed. in the over 1 million tamils ran away from Sri Lanka to India to escape persecution. India gave free shelter and food for decades. after the civil war stopped they are going back to Sri Lanka. still at least about 125k Sri Lankan Tamilians living in India .

Sri Lanka has many ancient temples and ancient cities dating back to the 4th century BC. There are 8 UNESCO world heritage sites in total

The google map for Sri Lanka railroads shows at least 6 color coded routes with overlapping highways and cities marked. There must be some good geological maps that show where the limestone might be. Isn't that where caves could be expected? 🌴😎🌴

Howdy man, I'm just holding the camera in my left hand and driving one handed with the right. I can actually keep my left hand on the handlebar while still filming, so it's fairly stable. Awesome that you're getting ready for another trip. Which places are you most interested in going to? I saw in the news that passport renewal times are back to normal now, so it shouldn't take too long.
With your years of handlebar prowess I will just yield my caution flag. Jan25 is when I can apply, uggg ,or too early. I will deep dive VN first, then Laos/ India. Still too cold in the Mtns for long stay further north. How about you ? hate to leave the warm now I bet?@@GabrielTravelerVideos
Why do you have to wait until a certain date before you can apply for a passport? Never heard of that restriction. I'm planning to head back to the US next month to take a break and ponder my 2024 plans. I'm actually considering some winter weather destinations such as Canada and Iceland, but will see what I feel like after some down time for a little while.
I still don't understand why the gal at JRC in the Philippines told me I had to wait till the end of Jan with an AUG 2024 expiration. After the first I think I will try to clarify. Will let you know what I find out. @@GabrielTravelerVideos
Right on. As far as I know there's no rule about waiting to apply for a new passport, you can renew it whenever you want. I got a passport in 2014, filled it up with stamps in 2018 and then applied for a new passport that year, which is the one I'm traveling with now. The reason it filled up so quickly was I didn't get the passport with extra pages, so I recommend going with that. Probably you already know about that option.

While a lot of the scripts in South and South East Asia (Sinhalese, Thai, Burmese, Javanese, Balinese, Tamil, Malayalam, Khmer, Telugu, Kannada, etc.) do indeed share common roots, they are very different.
