    Really clear presentation. Have spend several days trying to find a way to have the instrument panel always readable, especially the speed at a glance at a sufficient level of zoom and this looks a very good option. Thanks so much for your putting this out there.

    Thank you for your explanation. I keep an eye on it. With the support of FS2020 and a Knobster DIY, it should be a good investment in a small home cockpit.

    Thank you Russ, this is perfect to get me started.
    Got 2 kids 10yrs old, I will be learning to fly over the coming 24 months, and I'm part of EAA Chapter 406 in WA state where we started building an electric-powertrain equipped Sonex 2-seater motorglider (Xenos).
    I wanted to dive into Sim because, oh well, because it's great, and Im going through some of your videos to guide my escalating involvement into all this. I might buy XP12 when it comes out, but for now I'll try FS2020 with the setup you propose here.
    Anyway. Thanks for the inspiration and keep on trucking !

    In the process of building a SimSamurai home cockpit at the moment and Air Manager is the way I'd like to go. I have today purchased a Planer Systems PCT2235 22" touch screen from BHPhoto for just over US$200, before I saw your video. Recommended to me by a fellow simmer, so hopefully it's as good as this one. Waiting for the sales before purchasing my third LG 27" monitor, so hopefully it'll be up and running by December. Subbed to your channel and very much looking forward to future updates.

    Hi Russ, Thank you for the panel! I just downloaded the Beta and trying Air Manager for the first time on an Ipad. Works great! I just wanted to note that the OAT gauge wasn't appearing on the runtime panel so I took a look at it in the lua code viewer and noticed it was missing a parens on line 82 of the 'else if' statement. Once I added the missing parens the gauge ran in the debugger and on the panel. I am looking into purchasing a larger touch screen monitor as I would also like to have radios accessible on the touch screen. Thanks again for all of your useful videos, I really enjoy them. Looking into purchasing the Knobster as well. Take care!

    Hi Russ. I set up a G1000 Panel for the C172 in MSFS following the instructions in the video by Ivansky. I am using AM 4 and I used your G1000 bezel. My main screen for cockpit view is a large display running at 2560X1440. I am trying to use my Winmaxit screen (1920 X 1080) for Air Manager. The Winmaxit gets the video signal from an HDMI cable connected to my video card. I also have a USB C to USB A cable plugged into the Winmaxit and my computer. The USB C end is plugged into the "Type C" port on the Winmaxit and the Type A end of the cable is connected to my computer. I went through the touchscreen calibration procedure in Windows and I calibrated the Winmaxit touch screen. My problem is that when I scroll on let's say the Baro knob, the cockpit view on my main monitor zooms. When I click on any of the buttons on the Air Manager overlay, nothing happens. When I touch the Back button on the G1000 bezel (lower right next to Alerts) I notice the right yoke turn blue on the main large screen (cockpit view). The touchscreen is configured properly for the Winmaxit, but my key presses are not translating properly over to the large screen. Do you have any idea what I can be doing wrong?
    Thank you!
    Andy

    • @rbarlow
      @rbarlow  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Two separate issues:
      To eliminate the zooming look at your MSFS mouse control settings and remove the zoom in ans zoom out that is default set to use the scroll wheel.
      The touch screen issue is that you may not have correctly calibrated the touch screen so it thinks your touch grid is over the other monitor and is transferring the touch inputs to that other screen.

    Somebody needs to develop a VR glove and knobster for VR. That would REALLY bring VR flying forward and more practical. Because the problem for VR now, how do you interact with the controls? The way this could work would be, you have a VR glove. The glov detects you grab/touch something. The knobster could be made to work with the knobs in VR. So if you had a glove, you can always interact with the panel, run the knobs with the knobster by just touching them, and easily interact with radios, then grab your physical controls no problem. It sure would make paying the difference for VR worth it, and turn the sim to a training aid.

    This is the only way to make home simulators work for pilots that already hold their IFR ratings etc. All the VR stuff is useless . The little knob you use and the touch screen that allows for keeping displays as if in a real plane. I´m very excited about this path into useful home simulation .

    Thanks for that. I was thinking of a touchscreen for Sim use and on researching, found your video. The touchscreen would be epic with the GTN 750 (FSX for the moment) but the options with knobster are intriguing. I am thinking about making a cheap panel with one screen and also a good android tablet as screen 2 (this works wonderfully with the GTN via Spacedesk) and for FS2020, the TBM or CubX could be a good mix. Certainly, the options for G1000 with knobster are going to have me thinking here. Again, thanks for the video. I enjoyed it immensely.

    Hello, Russ. I truly love your instructional videos and are the "go to" when I'm wanting to know something about flight simming and Air Manager.
    In trying to make my own home cockpit I am needing to know if the 15.6" screen will show Air Manager instruments true to their size (in regards to actual instrumentation gauges) or if a larger screen would be needed.
    Thank you for all that you do.

    • @rbarlow
      @rbarlow  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      the view area on a 15.6" monitor is 13.6" wide and 7.6" high. Standard sized instruments are about 3.5" diameter including bezel so at full size( use 3.25" as close enough, keep the bezels small) you can place 2 rows X 4 columns. That's a six pack( with HSI for VOR 1) plus a second VOR and Tach. This calculator will help you figure screen sizes screen-size.info/ , Remember the as the screen gets bigger an HD monitor is still 1920 X1080 pixels even though larger on a larger monitor and you can fit more life-sized instruments on it, they may not be as sharp as the pixels get bigger.

  • @GodzillaGoesGaga
    @GodzillaGoesGaga 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Neat. What would be perfect is if you could get 2 of your touch monitors side by side and then split them horizontally 1/3, 2/3. And then be able to put the dash on the upper 1/3 and all the instruments on the lower 2/3's. It would also be better to have the bar on the window panels disappear but that might be a windows/Asobo thing. The reason I was thinking of this split is so your main monitor can be outside view only.

    • @rbarlow
      @rbarlow  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure I follow you. What do you mean Dash? Instruments? The bar on the windows panels?It may just be me but I don’t quite understand the big picture on what you’re writing maybe you could try again please. Thanks

    • @GodzillaGoesGaga
      @GodzillaGoesGaga 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rbarlow The part above the 6 pack and below the window. The idea is use the big monitor for looking outside and then split up 2 monitors below for instruments and the dash.

    Russ, Thanks for parenting Knobster into existence. Why don't you do the same with the aluminum panel? There must be a lot of folks wanting to set up your rig as shown in the videos but who have no access to the tools required to cut, bend, and drill that panel. I'll have to find a machine shop willing to do a little one-off job like that, something I'd rather not do during the pandemic. However, you could persuade Sim Innovations to get them made in batches of 100 (just for example) and sell them at a profit. Call it the "Barlow Knobster Bracket."

      True. They are fabricators by trade. Have you approached them about it? If not, there's no time like the present! Meanwhile, I'm happy to learn that you've considered getting the panels manufactured for sale. There's a great need, and with the introduction of MSFS, a rapidly growing market.

      To be honest, honeycomb aeronautical has announced that they have a somewhat similar product on the roadmap. But I think it comes after the rudder pedals they have planned after the throttle quadrant is yet to be released. I have spoken with him about another project and he has built a couple dual monitor cockpits using Knobster, so I’ll give him a call tomorrow and see what he thinks. Thanks for giving me a nudge. I’m retired and trying to make any money off of this it’s just not worth it because I really value the freedom to go and do what I want and simulation.

      That's interesting. If you look at the Bravo, it appears that they've made it the same height as the Alpha so that a panel can be made to span both adjacent units. Honeycomb would be a natural partner for this project, although I sense that they wouldn't be as agile as Stay Level in producing prototypes.

    Hi Russ,
    First of all congratullation for the good work you are doing.
    I build a sim panel with two monitors Wimaxit model M1560CT2 to work with a FS2020 and I'm also plan to incorporate a Knobster. Althought the monitors are, so they say, touch screen type, I only manage to make it work on one of them if it's choosen as a main monitor. If the main monitor is the wall one, the touch function is there but the buttons and switches on the panel are not sensitive to the touch.
    My question is, are there any setting or adjustment to be done on the computer graphics to allow the touch function to be fully active and the wall monitor to be the main monitor.
    Thanks in advance for your help...

    • @rbarlow
      @rbarlow  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Victor it sounds like you haven't calibrated your monitor's touch system. If windows senses a touch monitor it assumes the touch grid is located aligned with the upper left corner of the main monitor. If there is more than one touch monitor you need to calibrate the touch system. Go to settings and search for "Calibrate" and you will see a choice "Calibrate the screen for pen or touch input" . Select that and follow the directions. It will cycle through each monitor ( the screen will turn white with text directions). It will tell you to touch each monitor if it is touch or press ENTER if not to continue through the monitors. After you are done it will know how to correlate touches with the correct monitor. The following video will demo the process starting a timestamp 0 :33

    • @rbarlow
      @rbarlow  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      In order to use Air Manager with MSFS you need to download the beta version of the program from the same innovations wiki. You also need the new plug-in which I called the bridge application which will be installed automatically when you run the plug-in installer. You will need to use the username/password given in the instructions to activate the beta version of Air Manager 4.0 The beta should continue to work until the version 4.0 is officially released. Then I think it is a 50% price discount to upgrade.
      I am afraid a 22 inch monitor would not fit onto the bracket that is being sold by several vendors but you could easily make your own following the instructions that I included in my first video when I was building a do it yourself version. It’s a simple design made of a sheet of aluminum that has been drilled in mounted onto the honeycomb yoke. You might look for a mounting bracket that has the ability to adjust up and down so that you could set the top of the monitor to match the glareshield of different aircraft. That is one drawback with it mounted onto the yoke is that it cannot be adjusted in on some airplanes the instrument panel is partially visible above the top of the monitor.

    Hi Russ. I use air manager but lm wondering why there is not and option to use head tracking without the main screen panel, lm talking about the simulators.You have the separate monitor with air manager but having the main display with the cockpit is a litle redundant. I understand that is the way to have a 3D capabilities. I found one unfinish plane in xplane10 list that doesn't have a cockpit but surprisingly the panoramic view works with head tracking. I just want to bring the option in order to avoid using three monitors for the center and lateral panoramic views.

    • @rbarlow

      Yes it could work but two things are holding me back. First FS2020 doesn’t support multi monitors except with Nvidia surround which stretches the image badly on the outer edges and looks terrible after XP multi views. Second, it doesn’t support key events yet so many Air Manager instruments won’t work completely. When either of these are fixed I will install FS2020 on this simulator

    I'm holding out till i see a good 3 panel nVidia surround and fourth panel for instruments. (as i have now in FSX 3x 720p tv's plus one 24"monitor).
    Air manager seems a way to go. Can the we get rid of the 3D cockpit in external views?
    Does 2020 allow panels to pop out or is that Air manager process?

    • @rbarlow
      @rbarlow  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I want three unique views to each of the three visual monitors that allow setting offset angles and field of view on each. The surround creates a virtual single wide monitor on the three and the stretching of the image toward the outside edges is a dealbreaker for me. So far MSFS doesn’t allow a scenery only view. It does allow popping out the NAV display screens but so far the Asobo SDK hasn’t added all the Events that are needed to control them from an Air Manager bezel. Hopefully soon.

    Hi Russ, I went looking for the monitor with VESA mounts at Amazon but it was out of stock last week so I picked up one of these intead:
    Planar Helium PCT2235 Touch Screen 22"
    It's heavier than the model you have, coming in at around 8 lbs. Do you think the Honeycomb will have any issues with this extra weight? I'd like to take a similar approach with the aluminum and knobster. This is my 4th knobster, I bought two of the originals and now two of the Sim Innovation models with usb C. Love them!

    • @rbarlow

      Alt V7 since the concept is to simulate the selected knob from the panel I can o lay think of one triple knob in my experience. I flew a B737-200 that had an ADF with triple knobs for the frequency in kHz. One was the lowest ones digit. The second the tens digit. And the third went from 17 to 10 for the hundreds digit. I think a triple encoder would be hard to find too.

    Hello Russ, I am spending the day consuming many of your setup videos. Just got done watching the one showing how you have the 2 computers setup, one with Air Manager and XP the other more powerful with the 3 monitors. Now I have a question on how this MSFS is set up as you are only running 2 monitors. Are you still using the 2 computers? And when pooping out the panels from MSFS, are you able to make setting changes to the MFD or PFD? Knobster only works with Air Manager correct? Thanks

    • @rbarlow
      @rbarlow  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I only had one monitor for scenery in MSFS so all three were on a single computer. It isn’t possible to network computers in MSFS yet. Knobster only works with Air Manager and I would create a overlay bezel for the popped out displays but the SDK doesn’t support Key Events yet so it really can’t be done yet. I am afraid despite the beautiful scenery in MSFS that the same just isn’t ready for home cockpit use yet. It may be a while as I think their main focus is getting the VR stuff going as soon as possible. Also, for me until there is support for three monitors with geometrically correct views it’s just not quite worth the trouble.

      Actually the Knobster uses a proprietary microprocessor but there is a DIY version based on a Arduino Nano that you can build. The software and encoder arrangement is on the sim innovations wiki under Knobster. Cheap to build if you have basic soldering skills and a nano and dual push button encoder. • @rbarlow
      @rbarlow  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 2560 has 54 digital input/output pins. A simple two position switch or momentary closed push button needs one pin. Each dial needs two pins, one for each direction of rotation. So the dual knob encoder with push button on the G530 would use 5 pins. You can do the math but I would guess(only a guess) 2 megas would do it.

    My air manAgee beta 4 kept on searching for fs 2020 and not connect. Can you help? I am a brand new to this. Must I have something else installed to make them connect. I am trying with their demo panel for now.

      Look on the Sim Innovations wiki above where you downloaded the beta for the simulator software. Get the beta version. Just run the installer and it will put the bridge software on your FS2020

    Hi Russ... Where is the best option to purchase MS 2020... At the Microsoft store or on Steam... Thanks....

    • @rbarlow
      @rbarlow  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on whether you sim on multiple computers. If you do maybe Steam is the best option. To my knowledge the actual game is identical on both. I purchased from MS but if it is like FSX on steam you vacant log in from any computer to play

    Russ, thank you for all the info. I got my system running!
    Do you know of any way or systems that allow you to pop out the Bezels as well as the screen? is there a software overlay that you can use as a G1000 of g750 bezel overlay? I didn't see it on air manager yet.
    thanks

    did you find that the USB type C video input supports touchscreen, and the others do not?

    • @rbarlow
      @rbarlow  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      On mine I use HDMI for the video and USB for the touch grid connection to the computer. You definitely need a power connection to the monitor because the USB bus just can’t handle running the monitor.

    Hi Russ. Is it possible to send different air manager panels to two different monitors?

    • @rbarlow
      @rbarlow  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes no problem . You can run 9(I think but usually the limitation is the number of monitors you can run.

    You said Air Manager works with FS2020. But according the website, “Buying a Air Manager V3 license now will give you a free upgrade to Air Manager 4.0 once it has been released (late 2020/beginning 2021). Please note that the current V3 version does not support FS2020.” What did you do to get AM to work with FS2020?

    • @rbarlow
      @rbarlow  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The public beta version of 4.0 is a free download during testing and is fully functional but no paid panels. Obviously it is beta sot it may have bugs or incomplete features but you can use it now if you like. I used it in all my FS2020 videos of late.

    • @rbarlow

      Look on the Sim Innovations Wiki. Under “Air Manager for desktop” there is a Beta link. The version 4.0 public beta can be downloaded there and is free until it is released. The username and password for the beta are in the instructions. It is beta so there may be bugs or incomplete features but it works with FS2020

      yes Air manager and MSFS are all Windows 10 compatible. Not sure what you mean. Air manager 4.0 which is only in free public beta is not released yet is that's what you heard as not ready yet?
