The middle part with the horn section. Apparently, there was a Salvation Army band nearby at the time and Syd asked them to play. When asked what they should play, Syd simply said "Just play anything"

Believe it or not, there were actually two more Syd Barrett songs written for the album "Vegetable Man" and "Scream Thy Last Scream", but the other band members went against the advice of their managers, and vetoed them for being too dark. They finally got released almost 50 years later on The Early Years boxset. Please react to them, because they are essential Syd Barrett songs, as far as I'm concerned. Make sure it's the 2010 remixes on the official channel. and not the bootlegs. The sound quality is much better on the official release.

@@Voodooing It seems that gilmour and waters made Syd look worse than what he really was like (one of the madcap laughs producers, Malcolm Jones seems to think so too). An example of this is their production on that record, as said by Gilmour on how they handled it ""Perhaps we were trying to show what Syd was really like," "but perhaps we were trying to punish him.", by using some worse takes on that lp and putting some weird studio banter of Syd that points towards him being a lunatic I suppose, and thinking of punishing a guy that is going through a lot of tough shit is really cruel, maybe even the lyrics to "wish you were here" feeds that point of view. At the same time, both of them have made efforts to make sure that the royalties reach Syd's family, and Gilmour has expressed quite a bit of admiration for him, so the situation is not completely bad.

I take this song as a Syd Barrett Self portrait. His mental state was uncertain...The lyrics speak of confusion, loss, disassociation, and care-free madness. Brain Damage/Eclipse, at the end of Dark Side feels like a parallel song about madness, but from an outside perspective from the rest of the band. In Jugband Blues, we hear The Madcap himself describing his state. He took concept this even further with song "Vegetable man" where he described himself even more literally.

There were two more Barrett songs recorded in the same session called Vegetable Man and Scream Thy Last Scream. The two disturbed the band so much they constantly vetoed their release up until 2016, when they had to officially release them or else they'd enter public domain. Give them a listen when you can!

This was really all Syd had to do with this album of any consequence. Yes he played kazoo on Corporal Clegg and some guitar noodling on Set The Controls and possibly Remember A Day, but Jugband was his only real contribution. He had a couple tunes the band turned down but this was it for Syd on this album. And I don't look too deeply into the meaning of Jugband Blues as having some kind of poignant meaning, I think its just Syd being Syd.

Syd Barrett himself Said that he is not on "corporal clegg", there's a possibility that he could have contribuited with something in "See-saw" and that he could be playing the guitar solo at "Let there be more light" that's because one their managers at the time (Andrew king) Said that he played, maybe not playing but composing some parts of the solo
