    Nice.
A simple, sincere, and minimalistic video made by a guy, driven by his enthusiasm for the subject matter, and narrated by himself. Despite not being the usual flavor of heavy/slick editing and overflowing with effects and visual condiments (and of course, sponsors), it is honest. And possibly/sadly....an endangered species of content. If things continue to progress the way they have been, that is. AI and CG narration, along with content created for a single purpose, profit, might make these types of videos rare in the future. At least in the sense that, though they still might exist in the future, they certainly won't be recommended, and therefore go mostly unseen. Some think that is what's headed our way. Let's hope they are wrong.

"It's awfully considerate of you to think of me here. And I'm most obliged to you for making it clear that I'm not here." And... "I'm grateful that you threw away my old shoes and brought me here instead dressed in red. And I'm wondering who could be writing this song."

Saucerful of Secrets, the title track really is a stepping stone that was the perfect term to use for it. There’s a psychadelic and emotional experience in the studio track, and the live versions like Pompeii and from Nick Mason’s band of the same name, are a different experience that resonate with the Pink Floyd sound more people are familiar with.

I agree about Corporal Clegg to an extent - it consistently lands near the bottom of my comprehensive song ranking, but as I have become a bit of a scholar on the band's history and discography, I've come to appreciate that the lads always had a wicked, deadpan and sardonic sense of humor, and that comes through in some of their joke tracks, of which CC is one. It counterbalances their more heavy statements on the human condition, and also further proves my claim that "Pink Floyd tried nearly every musical genre, and every instrument at least ONCE in their career". That versatility and adventurousness is a big reason why they are my fav band of all time. Good review, glad to have stumbled across your young channel!

@@philipditchfield439 I also adore AHM, the suite and the whole album! I can kinda see it from Rog and Dave's perspective, especially Dave considering the main melodic motif was his idea. The end product just didn't achieve the heights they - in their perfectionism - were reaching for. With them being a little distracted by constant touring at the time, the backing track they handed Geesin was quite shoddy w/ off timing and rough tape splices, so Ron had to do quite a bit to make it presentable. On the other hand, having heard several live versions where the band is more in the moment, it sounds amazing...so Rog and Dave are just wrong. lol j/k

I had a British import vinyl copy of "Saucerful Of Secrets" back in the late 1970s, I liked it as much as "Piper At The Gates Of Dawn", which is quite a lot. "Ummagumma" & "Meddle" are also big favorites, I think they hit their peak with "Meddle" & maintained it up through "The Wall". They never really put out a bad album, but "The Final Cut" lost something with the absence of Rick Wright, but I did like the post Waters releases as well, it helped that Rick was back in the band. I thought your video here was pretty nicely produced, I liked the old video footage of the band.

Nice work on the video, it's refreshing to see someone else's take on classic Pink Floyd. As for earlier albums to listen to, I can generally go as far back as Meddle, but if I listen to earlier Pink Floyd, it's usually individual pieces I like, as the earlier albums just don't do it for me. Examples of great tunes for me are (of course) Echoes, Atom Heart Mother and the opening riff to Interstellar Domine. I'd have a very hard time picking between Echoes or Wish You Were Here as my favourite tune of theirs. Weirdly, though people prefer the Pompeii concert for Echoes, I have a very fond spot for the album version on Meddle instead.

Floyd fans who were around when Floyd released this album, Umma Gumma and Atom Heart Mother tend to rate them far higher than those that weren't. There are exceptions on both sides, but thats what I've generally noticed. There was something very, very different about Pink Floyd compared to all the other bands during their experimental days that people either loved or absolutely hated. I was around then and I loved them but I had plenty of mates who didn't. I would say that Pink Floyd, particularly during their experimental period are one of the most devisive bands ever.

I was late in discovering Pink Floyd and got swept away by the phenomenon that was The Wall, but I initially only found the use of sound effects more interesting than the nusic itself. But today it's the album I listen to the least and cannot recall the last time I listened to it from beginning to end without skipping some tracks. When I Roger Waters live about 25 years ago he must have played at least three quarters of the album. It was tedious and not a particularly memorable concert. After The Wall I started buying their older albums and was attracted to the darker themes that defined them from Dark Side to The Wall. I still don't consider The Final Cut as a full-fledged Floyd album. When I got older and started to outgrown these pessimistic feelings I started to look to that period from Saucerful of Secrets to Obscured By Clouds. There are so many beautiful gems to be found that will never get there proper respect and remain close to the heart of many hardcore Floyd fans. Even Roger Waters contributions to the soundtrack to the film The Body are hauntingly beautiful. Sadly the pessimism has eclipsed his mind and the band became his mouthpiece for his own hang ups and neurosis. It's only gotten worse with the years and now he sounds like a nut. But songs like Green Is the Colour, Cirrus Minor, If, Cymbaline, and even the bizarre Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast will always be among my favourites.

Cool topic. I agree that “ Piper “ is definitely the best of the more underrated albums. But “ Saucerful “ is special as well. “ Set the Controls “ is deep, strange and was absolute vintage Floyd. It’s another one of their earlier tunes that sounds even more ancient than it actually is. They were masters at doing that. And just like Obscured By Clouds, this album has always been overlooked.

The era before their "Golden Era" is one of their most interesting moments. I totally agree that A Saucerful of Secrets is an underrated one but I'm not entirely sure if it's the most underrated one. From this era, everyone points to Piper (i'm not talking about what's the most underrated one rn, if it sounded confusing). More is an interesting project featuring some really unique songs that nothing in their discography sound quite like them, but I do think that overall it was their weakest work. I feel like people completely misunderstand Ummagumma (in a similar way to how most people misunderstand The Final Cut and The Endless River) and completely forget about its importance, how all this experimentation helped to push the band into their new identity after the departure of Syd, an identity that they'd forge with the sounds of Atom Heart Mother (which is a top 3 PF album imo) and Meddle. I think AHM also deserves a spot for one of their most underrated works, but I think their true hidden gem is Obscured by Clouds, it's honestly incredible, they didn't need to go this hard for a soundtrack album to a film that hardly anyone knows about, let alone if they've even watched it, but it's completely obscured -pun intended- by the two albums before and after it which are obviously some absolute beasts.
Also, while yeah, probably Corporal Clegg is the weakest of the LP, I wouldn't say it's bad, it's a pretty fun one... for a song about war...
Something random, about Rick, while it's true that he slowly gets overshadowed for most people by David's guitar play and Roger's visions for the band, he was always my favorite from the band, he is their soul, he is Pink Floyd, he is the one who elevated their sound, what made them sound so unique and special and how there are basically no other bands like them, the closest I can think of would be Alan Parsons Project. Btw, his solo works are phenomenal and both of his albums are on the same level as PF's very best.

The Wall takes so much $#!t. It's a very solid album for where they were at the time. It was ambitious and exhibited extraordinary songwriting. That three note guitar motif that shows up all through the album that's just rocking in Another Brick part 2 but it's downright malevolent in Hey You. Then in The Trial it somehow gets even more malevolent when the judge starts singing. It's really brilliant. That's the type of thing you hear in Wagner and people like that. Re emerging motifs. It's f***ing brilliant. Some of Dave's best guitar solos are on The Wall. It's a damn good album. But I'm curious. How could they have improved it?

They were a cult band before Dark Side of the Moon, probably why the younger generation don't listen to the early albums, to me they're the best, I don't play the later ones 😊

Personally, I think Atom Heart Mother is way more underrated, especially considering how completely the band has criticized it since it came out, the suite in particular. Perhaps if the suite had been mixed better and the strings weren't so overpowering, and didn't essentially cover the actual performance of the guys, the whole album would be better appreciated. As far as Saucer goes, any album that features both Remember a Day and Set the Controls For the Heart of the Sun is a winner...And Jugband Blues is heartbreaking, especially since Syd outright admits "I'm not here..."

You could argue that any one of the pre-Dark Side albums are the most underrated just as you could argue the same for the post Roger Waters albums, but they all come up fresher for me than the ones I became over-familiar with. By a small margin, I think Saucerful of Secrets was the better of the 2 Syd Barrett albums.

While I appreciate A Saucerful of Secrets a lot, I do not think it is their most underrated album. After all, Nick Mason has literally named his new band after it, and they only play songs from before Dark Side.

Meddle is one of the best albums. But trying to compare Floyd albums to Floyd albums, is like trying to hold a candle to the Sun to see it better. All that needs to be said….Fact, Pink Floyd. Fact, the Universe

It’s great but could have been so much better if they didn’t keep a bunch of Syd tracks off it because they didn’t want him to get more credit just as they kicked him out

I THINK SAUCERFUL OF SECRETS IS BY FAR THE BEST. THIS WAS MY FIRST HEARING OF PINK FLOYD IN 1968 A YEAR AFTER THE FIRST LP PIPER AT THE GATES OF DAWN WAS RELEASED. MUCH BETTER. FOR SOME REASON ALL THE FOCUS IS ON THAT FIRST LP AND THE ONES THAT FOLLOWED SAUCERFUL IN PARTICULAR MEDDLE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON WISH YOU WERE HERE AND THE WALL. SAUCERFUL WAS THE LAST LP WITH SYD BARRET OUTGOING AND DAVE GILMOUR. A TRANSITIONAL WORK BUT DEFINITELY ONE OF THE BEST AND MOST OVERLOOKED.

Underrated is the most overrated word on TH-cam. Can’t you people think of something else to say? Anybody who follows Pink Floyd knows that nothing they ever did is underrated. People like myself who was around when these albums were contemporary knows that they were absolutely stunning and breaking new ground. The mystique that Pink Floyd had during this period was anything but underrated. They were a phenomenon. Just because they weren’t The Beatles doesn’t mean they were some blip on the radar. Even the Beatles thought they were fantastic.
