Not profitable? Yeah right! You mean not making enough profit..
We had similar at Lynemouth in the NE of the UK. Lynemouth had its own dedicated power station that was fed by its own dedicated coal mine(s). The site was so efficient that it had surplus power and that went to The National Grid.
Why did Lynemouth go? Well it was immensely profitable and very much its own site - fuel, electricity and nearby shipping terminal for feed products for the aluminium process. Heck it even had its own railway link. Owners could find no reason to close Lynemouth and so they forced closure - Rio Tinto (the owners) actually sabotaged the electricity feed at a main substation on the site - it caused the kilns to cool down and solidify. Once set, it was deemed too costly to remove the hardened aluminium and restart the production there!
Lynemouth Power Station now burns American biomass - shipped from the USA and deemed to be green energy FFS! Seems we don't have trees here for biomass.
The aluminium smelter is demolished and gone. They propose an eco park there too and housing - it will never happen.
Rio Tinto really are an awful corporation.

I understand why it might seem like a joke. It's a misconception that more horsepower means more force and more strength. Horsepower means the AMOUNT of energy you spend per unit of TIME, or how fast you apply the force, if you like. Heavy machines like this don't have fast moving parts and they don't need a lot of horsepower, but more force and more torque. On the contrary, fast and high accelerating vehicles like sport cars need more horsepower.

You thinking of car horse power, totally different, a big tractor of ours, gave 250 bhp, but it's how the horse power is applied. It's all pure grunt and its alot believe me

Having worked in an aluminium smelter, it’s much easier to demolish the building and rebuild, then to attempt to clean it. We wore full face respirators for a reason.
