This is the removal of the Sutton Place HOA (Garland Texas) pond dam on September 28, 2015.
For those wondering why the dam was removed. The Board for the HOA decided to have it removed and I am not on the board. But here is what I understand was the situation (may not be totally accurate).
The pond is essentially a settling pond for a large portion of the streets of northern Garland. It is feed by 2 storm-water culverts feeding in storm water from the west. Over the nearly 40 years of its life, it has silted up and is now so shallow, that it weed up and look terrible most of the year (spring thru fall). The large rain this spring actually washed a large amount of gravel and rocks (probably concrete) out of the storm-water sewers and into the headwaters of the pond nearly blocking the storm-water drains. And there was always a large amount of trash washed down the storm sewers and into the pond with every rain.
Dredging turned out to be to expensive to be funded by the HOA, when the sediment came back as contaminated. If removed, the sediment would have to be treated as toxic waste (lot of money). It is a drainage easement for the city, so attempts to block the flow would result in fines. For 10 years many efforts were made to get the city to pay for the cleanup and where never successful.
Recent attempt switched from cleanup to drainage to improve the looks and smell. After much work by the Board with the city, the city approved removal of the dam, letting the sediment dry, and the storm water drainage creating it own channels through the old sediment.
The HOA still had to pay for it. So the job went to the lowest bidder. The company hired chose the least expensive way for them to remove the concrete dam (which no one was sure how deep the concrete went).

Note: Several comments have been left about letting contaminated soil go downstream. From my limited understanding, the contaminates where fairly low, scattered, and settled deep in the sediment. As you can see in the video, the dam released the water. Very little sediment was released. What little was release, was from the top. The concrete of the culvert is still in place holding back nearly all the sediment.
A sad but true fact, probably 95% of the surrounding urban area doesn't have their insecticides, fungicides, herbicides, leaking car fluids, and liter end up in ponds on private property. It all ended in Lake Ray Hubbard directly. The same place this pond drains into (about 5 miles down stream).
6 months later, grass & other vegetation have covered and secured most of the sediment. 2 narrow areas of drainage have formed, but due to the height of the culvert apron (acting as a sediment dam), the channels have very little dept and are very narrow.

Watching that wrecking ball and water drain was oddly satisfying.
The HOA built the dam. They don't want to pay for the dredging of the pond. It's a collection basin for rain runoff from the streets. They damned it, they should be responsible for the clean up of the toxic sludge.
What a sad bunch of experts commenting on how they would have done this. The reason he didn't hit it harder is because that sends shit flying everywhere, causing damage, and costing money! The reason he used what he did is because it is most likely what he already had. Why spend thousands on an attachment to do what was probably a one time job. They got it done, made a paycheck and moved on!
Every one in the comments saying that theyre weak hits obviously doesn't realize there is a reason why he's doing it like that
1. To maintain control of the weight
2. To not damage anything else

Save your own time. All you need to know 2:30 - 4:00 smasked cracks in dam ; 13:05 removed the big pieces; 21:00 broom and dust pan.

Can't believe the stupid comments here. Keyboard construction experts. Excellent equip. operator. Used us little force as possible, caused zero damage to surrounding worksight, and was on ,gone ,and done in an hour.
Looks much better now! They even made like a small swamp!

The problem is that a real estate put this in to increase property value by selling lake lots. The result was poor drainage in the surrounding area causing some flooding. Another problem was that the dam was high enough, that in a heavy rain, it caused water to top over the culvert. That caused traffic problems on a major highway. I am sure the HOA is not happy, property values just dropped. Another issue is mosquito control. This mess looks like a disaster of mosquito borne diseases to come.
Dams and waterways are generally controlled at state level, even this far upstream. TVA and Colorado river are some larger examples.

That was strangely satisfying to watch.
I see a lot of folks here didn't read the dam video description. (see what I did there lol) It is an old, man made storm water retention pond that had filled with sediment. They removed the dam to allow the water to flow through without causing flood issues as more sediment comes in basically. This way, the water can just pass through.

Excavators must be some of the most flexible working tools ever made. Those and forklifts. Both can change the working "attire" or whatever you call it. And they look big, rugged and hardy, but from experience (at least with forklifts), i know they can be precise to the millimeter. Simply marvelous. There must be so much hydraulics, electronics and stuff being worked into each of those machines.
That first crack in the concrete was very satisfying

Looks like he just bought a brand new cat machine (very nice small excavator) that probly has less than 100 hours on it, printed up.some business cards and is getting paid on the job training.

I dont get why people are saying it could have been done better or faster. The entire project took 24 minutes.... lol Thats pretty quick if you actually think about it instead of just babbling.

It seems everyone here complaining about the operator is forgetting that the HOA had to pay for this themselves and used the lowest bidder. You get what you pay for! You want top shelf work, you pay top dollar.
When I saw the first hit that's when I realized it was a 20+ minute video
I always marvel at how easy the operators of these machines make it look, when I know for a fact it is not easy! Used to watch the operators on our construction sites, before I retired. Well done!!!

Branden Trowbridge After reading the description they didnt want to fund the dredge. This explains the lack of attachments. City didnt want to pay the extra cost of a breaker attachment.

Should have used a removable gate.
That way the heavy flows could be allowed to wash the sediment out and the gate used when you want to store more water.
Operator was cheap and successful. No one was injured. No equipment was damaged.

That operator was really good. Smooth, careful, easy on rigging.

if the contamination was too bad the city would not have ok'd the dams removal knowing the sediments would go downstream. that is monitored very closely by several agencies.

Why is this recommendation to everyone
I bet they started out with good intentions when they put in that dam. Then they realized it took on sediment so it spread out way past their original intention, became stagnant and increased the mosquito population 20 fold.

All of you need to just stop commenting. The operator did a pretty fine, professional and clean job. To those complaining about no hard hats, a hard hat wont protect against a bump from that machine and concrete wasnt going high enough. Quit trying to look and act professional when we all know youre nothing more than the dude on the side of his bosses truck throwing everyone under the bus for a promotion youll never get.

So... a poorly planned pond turns into a virtual cesspool and then a poorly planned solution is devised.... which will have to be corrected again in about 10 years.

Wrong tool for the job, should have used a pecker attachment and remove the rear of the block then even than small excavator could have pulled the remainder of the mass, I mean there is at the most a tonne of concrete there and the majority of the mass is behind the damm, these guys just made it look like much more of complex task than it was

Overthinking the equipment needed, 3 attachments to tear that out? Joke of an operator, and grinding debris hanging out of a bucket? Just get a bucket with a thumb already.

Aside from that ... HOA's costed me nothing but utter misery when I owned a home that was part of one! I cringe thinking of the "assessment" residents received to pay for this :/

I find this video satisfying. By the way the old water looks dirty, can be home for many mosquito eggs and gross stuff, water system should always be clean and flowing.
