MC Lyte | Hip Hop Icon, Beef With Another Female Rapper & Those Rumors About Her Sexuality

  • She was the first female solo rapper to release a full studio album, score a gold single and be nominated for a Grammy. Iconic hip hop pioneer MC Lyte took the rap world by storm upon her debut in the late ‘80s and immediately commanded respect from the male dominated industry. She also dealt with her fair share of professional and personal issues from a major beef with another female rapper to battling for the rights to her name and people constantly questioning her sexuality.

I once met her at a club. I stood way to the side of her as I did not want to invade her space. Her publicist approached me and asked if I wanted to meet her, MCLyte, I almost fell out and start rolling on the floor like Ms. Pattie Labelle in concert. She was the nicest, kindest, and warm, and made me feel like I was the only person in the packed club. MCLyte !!

@@TheLovesnowangel The same way you say "male nurse;" "male model;" "male ballet dancer;" "male gymnast" and even within musicyou hear things such as "male (AND female) opera singer and "male harpist" etc. When certain professions are so heavily dominated by a particular sex that the other is a rarity that differentiation will typically be highlighted.
There is also the fact that male & female artists are not marketed in the same way in any genre. Usher was not marketed like Brandy, Aaliyah and Monica. The Backstreet Boys and NYSNC were not marketed in the same was the Spice Girls, Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera, and so on.
However, when in comes to things like rapping, I personally think that in a situation where the best rappers of all time were being ranked based on abilities there should absolutely be no need to distinguish between the two because rapping is not like singing. But for everything else, sexism has nothing to do with it.

Antoinette was like a female Rakim; as in lyrical, similar in flow but not someone who wants to be in the spotlight like that. Lyte should be able to keep her personal life to herself and I hope she doesn't feel pressured to display any relationship....

I just wanna say MC Lyte is a beautiful sister and she isn't brought up enough! She deserves her recognition! Whenever I think of late 80s/early 90s female Hip-Hop, she's one of the very first to come to mind along with Queen Latifah, Salt n Pepa, and YoYo.

Kind of a random rant related to this idea, but for some reason people have stopped believing in the concept of tomboys, to the point where "professionals" will tell you you probably need to transition to the opposite sex or the internet tells you you are probably neither male nor female if you're a girl who likes androgynous fashion and has a masculine energy. And then of course the general public assigning a sexuality to you. It's so sad, I hope tomboy types aren't erased entirely because of new ideologies
