      By the way, NRF2 can be activated by sulforophane from what I hear. I didn't get the name of the hangover medicine. Also, I am not so sure about Pclutozoine. Was that an actual recommendation or rather just part of a mechanism discussion?

    I take an amino acid formula with leucine as the 1st ingredient. I maintain good muscle mass even though I don't work out alot. I am 63.

    Magnesium breakthrough was great for me in the beginning, but ultimately only taking capsule in the evening, the benefit was dismissed and I had no energy, I was dragging and had to stop. I now use Mitopure and NMN +, Resveratol. So far, so good. Oh, can't forget Turmeric with Xanthanthin

    The thing that jumped out at me in this video was that, though Dr. Kaufmann prioritizes muscle building - or at least maintenance - she still takes Metformin and Berberine, which, as I understand it, activate AMPK, which is antagonistic to muscle-building MTor. I just received a supplement from Renue by Science called Defender, which has CaAKG, Berberine and HLA, and I was starting to think I shouldn't have ordered it because of the Berberine, since I do a lot of muscle building and certainly would not trade muscle loss for longevity. Since Dr. Kaufmann doesn't seem to worry that Metformin (which thumbing through her book, I see she mentions though she doesn't seem to mention Berberine) will deplete muscle, I feel more confident that I can take Defender without worrying, either. Berberine has its benefits (especially for diabetics like me), so I'm happy I can take it without, presumably, suffering muscle loss.

    The fat redistribution property of Pioglitazone sounds brilliant. I immediately looked it up on the internet, and unfortunately, found quite a few contraindications. Sounds tempting, none the less. Excellent video interview. I learned a lot.

    @omvilla7469 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Oh... and Yes, Leucine does boost NAD precursors, together with Resveratrol, don't take too high of a dose, and it will not activate mTOR...
    I take them all 3 at once...😉

    This is the most valuable video I have watched in a while (and I watch a lot of anti-aging/health/body building videos). I too am into stimulating mTOR for my body building goals even though it is supposedly not good from an anti-aging perspective (my strategy is 3 days a week mTOR stimulation and 4 days focus on autophagy and DNA repair). I knew about NMN and Leucine but was unaware of Melatonin's activation of the sirtuins and had never heard if ursolic acid. I have just ordered some ursolic acid and will also add melatonin to my supplement regimen.

    @4:30 referring to ellagic acid, she says "...as you break the pieces up they become the urolithins..." Well, isn't Uro-A made in part, in some people, by gut bacteria consuming ellagic acid (and other polyphenols) and making Uro-A? Julie Anderson PhD (Buck) and Dr. Singh former guest on MH are just two relative experts on Uro-A.

    • @ModernHealthspan
      @ModernHealthspan  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Peter, thanks for your comment. That is my understanding as well. Dr Kaufmann did not go into how ellagic acid was broken up into the urolithins so the two are not in disagreement per se. Though if you don't have the right microbiome, according to Dr Singh, you won't get any urolithin A from taking ellagic acid.

    HMB is an anti-catabolite for muscle, it is a metabolic byproduct of BCAA but not in sufficient quantity so a supplement is suggested. It prevent the breakdown of muscle and promotes muscle healing.

    • @markfischer3626
      @markfischer3626 ปีที่แล้ว

      @amma Lea laura chemically I don't see why it matters. However I think in capsules it's easier to control the dosage. I also take so many supplements at the same time I find it more convenient to swallow capsules. I probably take over 60 kinds a day with more coming.

    Is there a transcript of this show? That would be very helpful. Is she saying that keeping blood sugar down is good for mitochondria? So wouldn't simply following a low GL diet do the trick? A low glycemic load diet also gradually rejuvenates the pancreas. Seems to me that a low GL diet is fundamental to health span.

    I am waaaaaaaaaay too tired to go on trying to make heads or tails of all this info. I understand it's important but frankly I am burnt out trying to figure out exactly WHAT I should be taking, WHAT I should avoid, HOW MUCH of what substance is good/bad etc etc. PLEASE PUT IT IN LAYMAN'S TERMS. TELL ME WHAT TO DO. I DON'T NEED ANY MORE STRESSING ABOUT WHAT WORKS AND WHAT DOESN'T.

      I understand, and granted, there's certainly a lot of information to sift through concerning health in general. But it's definitely worth the time and effort invested. Any beneficial changes in your health, however small, are still a win and will enhance the quality of your life in some way. Keep going in your search to improve your health. It's all worth it. Best of health, be well.

    5:48 - BEWARE - the product Richard is promoting has a product information page that is not scientifically sound. There are five main problems:
    1) It lists all the forms in the product, but the first one: “magnesium chelate” isn’t an ingredient in the way the other 6 are.
    Chelation is how some organic molecules bind to metal ions using ligands to form stable complexes that are different to salts.
    In other words, there are only 6 forms of magnesium in Bioptimizers formulation *not* 7 and most of them are magnesium chelates.
    2) Magnesium sucrosomial is a proprietary compound and I was unable to determine its structure. The issue with this are safety and efficacy concerns, because any new compound requires rigorous testing followed by a long period of post-marketing surveillance before it can be deemed ‘safe’. I’m not convinced this has been done with sucrosomial.
    3) With so many different ingredients going into this product, maintaining quality control is a problem, because it only takes one dodgy batch from just one ingredient to void the entire batch of Bioptimizer Mg…but just how good are their quality control processes? I could not find any kind of third party quality assurance nor GMP accreditation…does not inspire confidence that they’re producing a high quality product.
    4) There is no information about the absolute amounts of each magnesium compound in their product, so you’re getting a cocktail and you don’t know how much of any ingredient you’re getting? Dovetails with (3) to not inspire confidence.
    5) It talks about getting *all* 7 forms of magnesium in one capsule, but what does it mean by *all*?
    It seems to be making the claim that these are the *only* forms of magnesium you can buy. Blatantly not true, but even if you limit their claim to just organic chelates of magnesium, then what about: acetyltaurate, L-threonate, or lysinate?
    Lastly, I’ve been a subscriber of Richard since his channel was called: Modern Healthy HK. You would’ve thought he would have learned the basics of longevity by now, but I’m sorry…no way I can trust the judgement of someone who still can’t pronounce ‘mitochondria’ after all these years.
    Richard, it’s ‘mite’-o-chondria, not ‘meet’-o-chondria!

    Hi Richard, agree with a lot of what she says, but saying SIRT3 is the most important sirtuin is controversial and I believe untrue. Sinclair, Gorbunova, and many other leading researchers all agree SIRT6 is the most important sirtuin for longevity. Would be happy to speak to Sandra and see what data she is looking at.

    So im confused... Can we fast with leucine and stimm stimulate ampk or not?
    After watching this and dr zemels intervew Im now confused about leucine. Does it stimulate mtor by itself or not? From dr zemels interview it sounds like leucine is more of a mediator that can power either ampk or mtor depending on what its paired with. And also that leucine wasnt powerful enough to spike mtor without a large amount of protein.
    Im fasted today(or at least i thought i was) hoping to stimulate ampk. I dont usually take leucine until the evening with my first meal when im fasted. After watching dr zemels interview a couple days ago. I took it with my niacin this morning. Did i end up stimulating mtor and breaking my fast?

    • @jefflittle8913

      You don't burn brown fat. Instead some white fat cells start to have a high mitochondria population, which turns them brown. They are still burning white fat *molecules* but they are doing it faster.
      Dr. Greger has a long list of foods and spices that help turn fat cells beige (adult cells probably don't go full brown) in his book "How not to Diet".

    Hi Richard - this dr sounds smart but then not up to date on rapamycin with her comment that not good for muscle growth. Much testing over past couple yrs with use of rapamycin once ever 7 to 10 days then not detrimental effect on muscles and probably even some benefits to muscles and then too the biggest benefit for autophagy for one day taking drug. Too, much research from the NIH testing program (ITP) on really only several supplements with any real benefits for mice longevity and the dr having many recommended showing no benefits here with ITP for mice. If no benefit in mice for longevity then unlikely to benefit humans. Too the doctor mentions she eats junk processed foods and needing several drugs from her health issues with potentially some from all the junk food. After listening no desire to get her book. Thanks for the interview though and always looking forward to your new interviews and updates. Mike

      Hi Kristi thanks for your comment and question. So, two parts: Do I agree? I guess I view it this way. I make calculations of risk/reward all the time. I could eat cleaner, avoid all alcohol etc. but I enjoy these things and consider the trade off worth while. Dr Kaufmann makes an informed choice as to what she likes and takes measures to mitigate the outcome. I think this is a valid choice for her to make.
      With respect to whether I should push back on people. There are a couple of things, 1) in general the people I interview have a much deeper knowledge in the topics than I do and I may ask for clarification or or raise questions but it is not a debate . 2) I don't agree with everything that people who come on the channel say. For diet for example, I have had vegans, keto diet proponents and people in the middle. It would be impossible for me to agree with everything all of the say as they don't agree with each other!
