The thing that jumped out at me in this video was that, though Dr. Kaufmann prioritizes muscle building - or at least maintenance - she still takes Metformin and Berberine, which, as I understand it, activate AMPK, which is antagonistic to muscle-building MTor. I just received a supplement from Renue by Science called Defender, which has CaAKG, Berberine and HLA, and I was starting to think I shouldn't have ordered it because of the Berberine, since I do a lot of muscle building and certainly would not trade muscle loss for longevity. Since Dr. Kaufmann doesn't seem to worry that Metformin (which thumbing through her book, I see she mentions though she doesn't seem to mention Berberine) will deplete muscle, I feel more confident that I can take Defender without worrying, either. Berberine has its benefits (especially for diabetics like me), so I'm happy I can take it without, presumably, suffering muscle loss.

Hi Peter, thanks for your comment. That is my understanding as well. Dr Kaufmann did not go into how ellagic acid was broken up into the urolithins so the two are not in disagreement per se. Though if you don't have the right microbiome, according to Dr Singh, you won't get any urolithin A from taking ellagic acid.

Is there a transcript of this show? That would be very helpful. Is she saying that keeping blood sugar down is good for mitochondria? So wouldn't simply following a low GL diet do the trick? A low glycemic load diet also gradually rejuvenates the pancreas. Seems to me that a low GL diet is fundamental to health span.

At min 11:35 she mentiones a supplement for boosting pcg1a and lowering glucose level. I understood smthg like piaglutazion.. Can someone pls tell me tge exact name? Thanks!
5:48 - BEWARE - the product Richard is promoting has a product information page that is not scientifically sound. There are five main problems: 1) It lists all the forms in the product, but the first one: “magnesium chelate” isn’t an ingredient in the way the other 6 are. Chelation is how some organic molecules bind to metal ions using ligands to form stable complexes that are different to salts. In other words, there are only 6 forms of magnesium in Bioptimizers formulation *not* 7 and most of them are magnesium chelates. 2) Magnesium sucrosomial is a proprietary compound and I was unable to determine its structure. The issue with this are safety and efficacy concerns, because any new compound requires rigorous testing followed by a long period of post-marketing surveillance before it can be deemed ‘safe’. I’m not convinced this has been done with sucrosomial. 3) With so many different ingredients going into this product, maintaining quality control is a problem, because it only takes one dodgy batch from just one ingredient to void the entire batch of Bioptimizer Mg…but just how good are their quality control processes? I could not find any kind of third party quality assurance nor GMP accreditation…does not inspire confidence that they’re producing a high quality product. 4) There is no information about the absolute amounts of each magnesium compound in their product, so you’re getting a cocktail and you don’t know how much of any ingredient you’re getting? Dovetails with (3) to not inspire confidence. 5) It talks about getting *all* 7 forms of magnesium in one capsule, but what does it mean by *all*? It seems to be making the claim that these are the *only* forms of magnesium you can buy. Blatantly not true, but even if you limit their claim to just organic chelates of magnesium, then what about: acetyltaurate, L-threonate, or lysinate? Lastly, I’ve been a subscriber of Richard since his channel was called: Modern Healthy HK. You would’ve thought he would have learned the basics of longevity by now, but I’m sorry…no way I can trust the judgement of someone who still can’t pronounce ‘mitochondria’ after all these years. Richard, it’s ‘mite’-o-chondria, not ‘meet’-o-chondria!
Richard, You and some of your followers have some expertise on magnesium supplementation. Do you have an opinion on taking magnesium L-threonate before bedtime? It is supposed to penetrate BBB better without overloading your intake. Thanks.
Hi Richard, agree with a lot of what she says, but saying SIRT3 is the most important sirtuin is controversial and I believe untrue. Sinclair, Gorbunova, and many other leading researchers all agree SIRT6 is the most important sirtuin for longevity. Would be happy to speak to Sandra and see what data she is looking at. Keep the good interviews coming!
What they said is that SIRT3 is the one we know most about, and Sinclair and company have said it is the most important one, and SIRT6 might be more important, but we don't know much about it yet.... But, who cares?? Take the "stuff", live healthy and happy... oh, and longer...🙂👍
@@omvilla7469 well then she is wrong. Direct quote from David: "SIRT6 seems to be the most potent/important because when you turn it on you get a robust lifespan extension."
Hi Alan, thanks for sharing and great to see you! Certainly I have heard more about SIRT6 in longevity and it is the one I believe has the most research behind it.
So im confused... Can we fast with leucine and stimm stimulate ampk or not? After watching this and dr zemels intervew Im now confused about leucine. Does it stimulate mtor by itself or not? From dr zemels interview it sounds like leucine is more of a mediator that can power either ampk or mtor depending on what its paired with. And also that leucine wasnt powerful enough to spike mtor without a large amount of protein. Im fasted today(or at least i thought i was) hoping to stimulate ampk. I dont usually take leucine until the evening with my first meal when im fasted. After watching dr zemels interview a couple days ago. I took it with my niacin this morning. Did i end up stimulating mtor and breaking my fast?
You don't burn brown fat. Instead some white fat cells start to have a high mitochondria population, which turns them brown. They are still burning white fat *molecules* but they are doing it faster. Dr. Greger has a long list of foods and spices that help turn fat cells beige (adult cells probably don't go full brown) in his book "How not to Diet".
Hi Brandon, thanks for the question. I thought that the one she mentioned was a supplement (Dapagliflozin) but it is drug. Looking around I cannot find any supplements that have this effect (unfortunately).
It is taken to repair liver mitochondria. But how do u take it? Its not soluble in water or fat. Its only soluble in alcohol. If someone is not drinking alcohol, what is the best time to take Dihydromyricetin? Is it better to take Urolithin A instead of DHM for non drinkers? Can someone please answer?

Hi Richard - this dr sounds smart but then not up to date on rapamycin with her comment that not good for muscle growth. Much testing over past couple yrs with use of rapamycin once ever 7 to 10 days then not detrimental effect on muscles and probably even some benefits to muscles and then too the biggest benefit for autophagy for one day taking drug. Too, much research from the NIH testing program (ITP) on really only several supplements with any real benefits for mice longevity and the dr having many recommended showing no benefits here with ITP for mice. If no benefit in mice for longevity then unlikely to benefit humans. Too the doctor mentions she eats junk processed foods and needing several drugs from her health issues with potentially some from all the junk food. After listening no desire to get her book. Thanks for the interview though and always looking forward to your new interviews and updates. Mike
Taking drugs to lower bloodsugar??? Cheeting your system (= your body) with medications??? Would it not be more logic to NOT eat sugar and fast so now and then? More natural. I will never take medications for this. Richard, do you agree with this practice? Why didn't you object?
You’re wrong here. I take vitamins and supplements also Dr Ken Berry agrees with taking them same with Dr Eric Westman. Along with my cardiologist. Down 87lbs in under a year, my labs are perfect my bone mass is fine through a dexa scan I had. Don’t knock what you don’t know.
You dont argue with a guest you are interviewing. It isnt a debate, you asked to get the guests view. She said she never recommends her own diet. She was honest
Hi Kristi thanks for your comment and question. So, two parts: Do I agree? I guess I view it this way. I make calculations of risk/reward all the time. I could eat cleaner, avoid all alcohol etc. but I enjoy these things and consider the trade off worth while. Dr Kaufmann makes an informed choice as to what she likes and takes measures to mitigate the outcome. I think this is a valid choice for her to make. With respect to whether I should push back on people. There are a couple of things, 1) in general the people I interview have a much deeper knowledge in the topics than I do and I may ask for clarification or or raise questions but it is not a debate . 2) I don't agree with everything that people who come on the channel say. For diet for example, I have had vegans, keto diet proponents and people in the middle. It would be impossible for me to agree with everything all of the say as they don't agree with each other!
@@ModernHealthspan Hi Richard! Oké I understand your point. Just one thing: When it comes to advice to take drugs, you and your guests should warn people for the possible side effects. Many people follow the leader, follow you and your guests, without critical mind. You have to protect them from side effects and point out that a healthy lifestyle is always better than hacking your system with drugs.
I mean, this female doctor is brilliant. But she totally lost me when she said “I take lots of drugs to lower my blood sugar “I mean we’re all trying to get off of medication not add more. I just don’t understand that unless she has a familial history of major, high blood sugar

Hi Gary, thanks for sharing. Always good to get your nutrients from food.
Astaxanthin, Magnolia... very interesting, I was dismissing their importance to a secondary or even tertiary category, but now bumping them up on my list...
- Though I think we need to take all this "stuff" intermittently... the body needs to do its part as well...🤔😎👍
Hi Om, thanks for sharing. I agree, I tend to have a core set of supplements that I take everyday and then others which I rotate through.
Would adding tiny amount of a GLo1 work as opposed to metformon
Is there a transcript of this show? That would be very helpful. Is she saying that keeping blood sugar down is good for mitochondria? So wouldn't simply following a low GL diet do the trick? A low glycemic load diet also gradually rejuvenates the pancreas. Seems to me that a low GL diet is fundamental to health span.
I am waaaaaaaaaay too tired to go on trying to make heads or tails of all this info. I understand it's important but frankly I am burnt out trying to figure out exactly WHAT I should be taking, WHAT I should avoid, HOW MUCH of what substance is good/bad etc etc. PLEASE PUT IT IN LAYMAN'S TERMS. TELL ME WHAT TO DO. I DON'T NEED ANY MORE STRESSING ABOUT WHAT WORKS AND WHAT DOESN'T.
I understand, and granted, there's certainly a lot of information to sift through concerning health in general. But it's definitely worth the time and effort invested. Any beneficial changes in your health, however small, are still a win and will enhance the quality of your life in some way. Keep going in your search to improve your health. It's all worth it. Best of health, be well.

At min 11:35 she mentiones a supplement for boosting pcg1a and lowering glucose level. I understood smthg like piaglutazion..
Can someone pls tell me tge exact name? Thanks!
Hi Justus, thanks for the question. The substance was Pioglitazone. Unfortunately now I look it up, I see that it is a drug not a supplement.
what you have to tell us about PQQ !???
Checkout methylene blue for mitochondria
She days something like "sirt 3 is the only sirtuin known to be associated with longevity"..?
That seems pretty dubious.. What about Sirt 1 & 6?
You guys ever hear of melatonin supplements causing damage to the eye ? Thanks
Thanks Richard.
Hi Ron, thanks!
5:48 - BEWARE - the product Richard is promoting has a product information page that is not scientifically sound. There are five main problems:
1) It lists all the forms in the product, but the first one: “magnesium chelate” isn’t an ingredient in the way the other 6 are.
There is no general manager on a job site. there is a general contractor
Richard, You and some of your followers have some expertise on magnesium supplementation. Do you have an opinion on taking magnesium L-threonate before bedtime? It is supposed to penetrate BBB better without overloading your intake. Thanks.
And Im getting closer to 70
Methylene blue + sunlight + transdermal magnesium chloride is the best for mitochondria.
Direct quote from David:
"SIRT6 seems to be the most potent/important because when you turn it on you get a robust lifespan extension."
@@alangraves1189 with emphasis on "seems to be"...🙄
Hi Alan, thanks for sharing and great to see you! Certainly I have heard more about SIRT6 in longevity and it is the one I believe has the most research behind it.
She said Sirt 3 was the most important sirtuin related to mitochondrial health.
Nice .. very interesting… with humor .. a rockclimber … Well pity i just gave up my Amazon Account … Now i cannot get to the books. 😢
Hi thanks for your comment and yes she is great. I am sure you can get her book from local bookstores as well😁!
I am in Europe … difficult . But you asked some nice questions and she gave a good overview.
i couldn't make out the supplement that Dr. Kaufman said to take for burning brown fat~is that different than solid fat? Within your organs?
You don't burn brown fat. Instead some white fat cells start to have a high mitochondria population, which turns them brown. They are still burning white fat *molecules* but they are doing it faster.
Dr. Greger has a long list of foods and spices that help turn fat cells beige (adult cells probably don't go full brown) in his book "How not to Diet".
@@jefflittle8913 Thanks for replying. Yvisceral fat?
the last portion , she mention natural ingredients , but never say the exact ones.
Type phlorizin SGL2 into Pubmed. The flozin drugs are derivatives of phlorizin. Phlorizin is not a practical solution as it is not available retail.
Hi Brandon, thanks for the question. I thought that the one she mentioned was a supplement (Dapagliflozin) but it is drug. Looking around I cannot find any supplements that have this effect (unfortunately).
This is discussed in Yaribeygi 2022, Naturally Occurring SGLT2 Inhibitors: A Review , I found citations 35 onward interesting.
Dihydromyrecetin
Hi Julia, thanks for sharing. I had not heard of that supplement before. It is also called ampelopsin.
Thnx! What was that one for?
It is taken to repair liver mitochondria. But how do u take it? Its not soluble in water or fat. Its only soluble in alcohol. If someone is not drinking alcohol, what is the best time to take Dihydromyricetin? Is it better to take Urolithin A instead of DHM for non drinkers? Can someone please answer?
@@ModernHealthspan can u please answer above question?

@@ChillFantasticFive Well I think a debate would make it even more interesting.
Vitamin e tocotrienols
I mean, this female doctor is brilliant. But she totally lost me when she said “I take lots of drugs to lower my blood sugar “I mean we’re all trying to get off of medication not add more. I just don’t understand that unless she has a familial history of major, high blood sugar

For mitochondrial health eat beef and/or liver.
Melatonin makes me nauseated bigtime.
red / IR light therapy and / or good sun exposure will produce melatonin directly within the mitochondria, within the cells , where it is needed and during the day when oral melatonin is going to disturb your sleep cycle. At night the brain produces melatonin not just for sleep, but for the cells as well. This video by a licenced physician will explain in more detail, with a summary @22 th-cam.com/video/2Zzo4SJopcY/w-d-xo.html

Meat for Meatochondrial health. 😀 Seriously, keto diet and fasting are the best ways.
Depends on what you're dealing with. If you have autoimmune stuff or APOE4:gene or MS food alone is not working. Your body is not using some things correctly so some supplements are helpful. I lost all excess weight to BMI 21 and insulin resistance is still there. I'm transitioning to anti inflammatory diet but energy is getting bad. Researching takes so long too. But glad to get the info and comments and sift through.

The three best supplements for mitochondria are 1.Sunlight 2. EZ water 3. Native EMF
