Carl was the most musical of the great bone players. He knew how to throw unbelievable chops into his beautiful phrases. I remember Phil Woods of all people telling me in the 90s 'Carl Fontana, the greatest trombone player in the world'.
Agree with all of the comments, nobody like him really on any instrument, endless ideas and chops to pull them off, and makes you smile all over. Was this released commercially? Would love to hear the rest. I wondered if that was McKenna, fine player, but didn’t remind me so much of him.

nice to hear. I know that J.J. was a big admirer as well- too bad they never did a cd together ( except the porgy and bess bigband)
