Carl Fontana was my private teacher from 1979-1983. Prior to that I studied with Frank Rosolino from 1973-78 until he committed suicide. What amazing influences they both were in my playing!!

Scott Bliege What did you take away from each that still sticks with you today? Are they any tapes of clinics on these 2, anywhere?

I played with Carl for a solid 4-5 months every Monday night in Las Vegas in the late 90s. I took a semester off from Berklee to play with him when he invited I stay in the band. I learned more in that few months then I ever did at Berklee, and I'm a saxophone player. The people who stopped in to play with him from LA or wherever were immense. We never knew who would walk through that door. Watrous arrived more than once and Carl called him 'Mr. Chops' back then. Carl had a few quotes he stuck with and I heard them constantly. Very quiet tone, but brilliantly musical. Constantly changing mouthpieces too, when I asked why, he told me he lost the piece he really liked. Hilarious

Gotta love those quotes. The first one Peter and the Wolf Suite by Prokofiev and then some child's rhyme that I forget the name of. Look at his lips! They look perfect for playing high.

Actually, you missed his first quote at 1:00, Lullaby of Birdland. Then at 2:00, what is that? Mexican Hat Dance?
