I don't think I'll ever understand their reluctance to bring DQ10 offline here. I get not doing the MMO version with the cost for servers and stuff but they could easily pay a team to translate it if they didn't have the resources to do it in house. It wouldn't print money for them, but it would absolutely be profitable for the amount of work needed to let us play it. Blows my mind.

For me, I think some of the reasons DQ 10 Offline is still not localized yet is because of the following:
    1. DQ 10 Offline's chibi graphics for the characters. The entire world was changed into a small diorama style, with the characters also being small as well. I remember that in one of the comments that talked about the DQ 10 offline livestream for the DLC, there were Japanese fans who said that they disliked the style of the game. This could evoke the same feelings on what happened with the graphics of Pokemon BDSP, where fans were also diverse on its chibi characters. I think SE began to realize that it may harm sales of the game if it is brought to global audiences, especially when they would compare the graphics to DQ 11.
    2. They are still thinking of ways to replace some aspects found in DQ 10 offline. One example is the ability to move most of your data from the offline version to the online version. While they could easily remove that, they still need some way to add some aspects in the global release to make the game more appealing, such as when DQ 11 got some additions when first brought to the west.
    3. How the story and gameplay would be like. I don't know how better the story of DQ 10 (for Ver. 1 and 2) is compared to DQ 11, but gameplay seems to be similar to 11, except it lets you customize your main character's class and side quests that are similar to DQ 9's focus on sidequests (it also has some kind of online interaction). Maybe the story would be fine on its own, but western people may think that the game lacks innovation since its mostly reusing those two games main mechanics for gameplay.
I still believe the game could be released outside of Japan, but those factors could potentially harm its sales, though the DQ 9 aspects may seem new to western gamers who haven't played 9 yet. I think making Ver. 2 as part of the base game instead of DLC is the way to go, but SE still needs to invest ideas and money in order to make the game likeable for western gamers and still earn some profit as well.

That and when you BEAT the OFFLINE version of 10 you CAN convert the SAVE file TO the Online version and since the ONLINE version is likely to NEVER leave Japan in the first place theirs really no point in releasing the OFFLINE version outside of Japan because of the Offline to Online conversion.

Everything here is very well said. I'm fine with spin-offs as long as the main series is accessible, but it's not. That's the problem. As far as mainline games, here's what makes most sense to me:
I-III - Offer optional sprite swaps from the Super Famicom remakes. This would be a simple way to make the visuals less gaudy and would please purists. Also, fix the choppy movement if possible. (And most importantly, don't use the HD-2D Remake of III as an excuse not to offer simple tweaks to this trilogy in its current state.)
IV-VI - Offer simple ports of the mobile versions. They would obviously need to be reworked to fit 16:9, but that seems very achievable. Of course, I'd be quite happy with bigger remasters or remakes, but for time and efficiency's sake, let's do basic ports for now.
VII and VIII - These are trickier, but reworking the 3DS versions to modern platforms seems like the most obvious thing. Rework for a single screen, clean up the menus, upscale, and bump to 60 FPS if possible.
IX - This is the trickiest. I think a full-on remake would make the most sense, especially given IX's multiplayer angle. I'm in no rush here. Squeenix should take their time with this one and prioritize the easier, more obvious mainline DQ port projects for now.
X - Gee, if only there were an offline version of this Japan-only online game that could be translated for a global audience.

My current theory is they released a bunch of spin offs in two years knowing the bigger games like 3 HD and 12 would have nothing to show in 2022-2023. This isn’t me thinking that development for those is trouble but rather I think they rushed out the spin offs to avoid a two year drought.

The monsters games on the 3ds should have been released in the West. 10 definitely needs to be translated and brought over. Square Enix needs to be more supportive of tradition also. Like Final Fantasy getting a pixel remaster. The first 6 games of Dragon Quest should as well. Monsters needs to stay a staple of the series as well to compete with pokemon. They also need to stay away from mobile games as well.

I'm hoping Monsters does decently cause it does hurt on how Dai is doing and I enjoyed the anime myself which I would get that when it's on a nice sale. As for other DQ games the only ones that are even out is 1-3 on switch which is based on the mobile ports, tho the graphics are not my favorite, functionality is decent but 3 I would hope the remake takes in more of the SNES or also the GBC content cause the one on switch/mobile is a far cry from that. But would be a pleasure if they can bring the Zenithian trilogy especially 4 since the best version of that is the mobile since that has party chat when the ds removed it to get it out quick, and they learned that lesson thankfully with 5 and 6 on ds.

The Zenithian Trilogy is on the phone iirc? I know IV is better on the phone because of added back banter, but it is a sort of accessibility since everyone should have a phone and it's not demanding. Spinoff is just not gonna do well in the west, due to poor marketing and people don't really like DQ as much over here. I think Monster should do well, considering the anger at pokemon and its bad performances as of late, so that could be a strong contender as a good side game to throw out every 2 years. So yeah, cut down the spin-off to monster and the main game would probably help the brand name a bit, since the developers for treasure/monsters are not the same ones doing the mainline games so they can do more than one game for the series.

    • @ThatsRoyo

What you just said about the zenithian games being on mobile is the problem, not everyone wants to play mainline games on a phone, many prefer to play on either their pc or console of choice. It’s just a matter of options SE is not willing to give to dq fans when they are more than willing to offer older titles from their other franchises on modern platforms. Ie. Mana, final fantasy, star ocean

  • @plasmaaxis356

Totally agree with your point of making the older DQ games accessible, sad how that’s a still problem years later and everything in that video applies to this day still. Sucks that new DQ fans are forced to buy old consoles and buy super rare expensive copies of games, or emulate them on pc, or just play the mobile ports which not everyone is a fan of.

Bad take, the spinoffs are being worked on by other studios and most likely are not hindering the development of mainline, I’d rather have spin offs or ports of the first 9 mainline gamesthan some lame octopath style remake of 3.

About that ONCE the 3DS shuts down ITS Servers the DLC content from its Dragon Quest 7 version will shut down WITH IT hence the 3DS version of DQ7 really needs a PS4 PS5 Switch port BEFORE March or April of NEXT year due to the Server shutdown.
The DLC content Dragon quest 8 3DS version however was completely worthless.

Gotta hard disagree with the dropping spin-offs part, especially since Dragon Quest Monsters 1 & 2 were what got me into the franchise in the first place. Played the demo on switch and freaking loved it. The only reasons I've yet to pick it up are because: 1 I hate using the switch, and 2 recent shenanigans from moving to a new place drained 2k out of my bank account, got no money for new games anymore. Even if I hate the switch, it would've been a day one purchase if I could've managed it.
I started playing Monsters 1 again somewhat recently, and found that it still holds up. Better than I remember in fact, now that I'm old enough to understand more of it. Heck, those two GBC games have more depth, freedom and adventure than modern pokemon games.
The problem is shit spin-offs. A lot of the one's I've heard about where sub par or, in the case of that anime tie-in game, overpriced fluff. I have no problem with spin-offs to help hold fans down in between releases; in fact, I think franchises should do exactly that in order to buy more time to work on the core games. Thing is, you need quality control and no high up wants to spend time or money on that when they could be shipping the game and making a potential morbillion bucks.
I was actually looking to try and finish that dynasty warriors one on PS4 (save file is on my brother's PS, back where I moved from and sharing won't let me access a game I freaking bought under my own account) and then move on to the sequel. I want more crazy stuff like that. If I heard today that Enix was axing all future DQ spin-offs, I'd honestly shed a god damn tear, because that'd be a travesty.

    • @ThatsRoyo
      @ThatsRoyo  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

I don't necessarily mind spin off games as I get it sometimes you need something to filled with void, though my point in the video was, with many people who's only mainline game they played being Dragon Quest XI, the solution to keep them around was not low quality spin offs, it was to get the other mainline titles widely available on modern platforms

    • @ClydeJHatbird
      @ClydeJHatbird 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@ThatsRoyo Absolutely, I agree. I just didn't want people to get the idea that spin-offs in general where the problem.
There was a steady push back in the day to get them all on various hand held systems, but that comes with issues as you get further down the line, as well as the technology (DS/3DS) used to house them. It wouldn't be too difficult to fix up and build off of, say the DS versions of 4-6, but then there's 9, a game built for the DS that suffers when removed from it.
The preservation of long running RPG series becomes a bit of a difficult thing, when you have to balance when and how they came out, any additions from previous remasters, and the appropriate cost for modern hardware. Not to mention the dev time spent figuring this stuff out. It's reasons like that that have me saying that spin-offs have a place. Something to keep the franchise relevant and experiment with, while all that background chicanery is tooled around with.
I mean, it's kind of a moot point, now that they've announced remasters of 1-3. 4-6 could easily follow in slower released installments, since they're bigger games, but I wonder about what happens beyond that. 7 has, from what I've heard, a notoriously huge script. It's already been given a modern translation, thanks to the 3DS version, but what about the style? Is that a game that could be done in HD2D?
This does set the pokemon like expectations of seeing your older games constantly getting remastered. Perhaps something like an interactive compendium might be a quicker and more reliable solution? Like a $30 "History of" museum-esque game, with playable elements.

The reason why SQEX will not release the older DQ games on modern platforms its because Yuji Horii has full control and greenlight of those games and as we see recently, he is pretty busy with his hands full on other DQ projects with the big one DQXII so I don’t expect a volume collection of DQ games to be released on modern platforms.

😂 its so ironic when you said about fans excited for XII with its gameplay changes all i see is doomposting saying “this will not be my DQ or DQ is dead, etc” when we even have a gameplay trailer yet for god’s sake!
I also do have a fair share of fear cuz this is SQEX we’re talking about. This is the same company who doesn’t have a long attention span on when to keep certain traditional elements of its golden goose(FF) and when to innovate for the modern era. My biggest fear is that DQ after XII is gonna be melodramatic like FF and all its charm would be sucked out of the series plus the dark/mature themes the series is known for would be replaced with emotional drama, nonsensical violence, and swearing. That is not how you make a mature and poignant storytelling!

@@kpsk8031 SQEX and Horii realized that when XI came out, the franchise has acquired a large amount of new fans getting into the series(not as big as the mainstream games but still). And Horii has said in DQXI interviews that DQXI is the sendoff to classic DQ and XII is going to be a new era for the franchise.
      My biggest concern is:
      1) if they go for a dark/mature tone, they have to make it as authentic and not shoehorned as possible. And not make it as melodramatic as Final Fantasy is. FFXVI proves that FF doesn’t know how to tackle real mature themes and instead manipulate its fans by emotionally manipulating them through melodrama.
      2) if the combat is changed(they didn’t say it will be action based that’s the mainstream gaming media talking not Horii) they need to create something original combat system that is a true balance of action and turn based and not camouflaged version of it like FFVII Remake.
      3) how they are going to handle between balancing traditional elements of the series while innovating at the same time and not do the way of FF of “we can do anything we want with it at the riskof alienating our fans” doing things. Like i said they need to strike a balance.
And my hope is that the Squaresoft side of the company is not corrupting the Enix side of the company.
