Playing 2008-2009 this was a pinnacle of LFS. I remember those old good days. And those CTRA servers... So addicting, full of people, great racing... Haven't experienced anything like that ever since in other sims.
It needs support for VRS DDs! The wheel has negative values turning left and positive values turning right. The force feedback is reversed only when turning left. I miss this game so much having raced on it a ton in 2014 with a G27, but I can't with my VRS. Edit: OH MY GOSH IT WAS FIXED IN THE APRIL UPDATE!!!
Was a huge part of my life in the early 2000s and, like Will, spent a lot of time learning how to race on it. For sure it helped with my real life racing career and I still keep in touch with Will after we met through the game all those years ago!
One thing I absolutely love about LFS is how much nicer it feels to drift than in AC. That might be because I've only got a very low horsepower car that I can drift with, but it's just so nice
LFS still holds up and can compete with the best in the sim racing world. If the devs had fully allowed mods from the beginning, LFS would have been today's Assetto Corsa.
Still racing. They have so many community organized races happening every week. I race Formula XR series every friday for 15 years now. Still going strong with 25-50 people on the server every Friday.
It was the first time I'd seen Autocross in a simulator and the online was great. It had a great community and feeling like you were getting in on something early was definitely fun. The driving felt great as well.
IMO The most ORGANIC racing sim on the market! All others are feel/sound/look synthetic. -Best physics. -Best FFB. -Best online experience. -Best VR experience. -Best dynamic environment reflections with no delay. -Best sound model that act naturally (not just a pre-recorded at certain 1000's RPMs engine sound as in other sims, but you can actually hear an each combustion in LFS). -Best wheels rotation. (wheels rotation blur is live, not just a blurred rim texture as in other sims). -Best optimization. It runs on a calculator from 2007. These are the strongest parts IMO. Yes, it has a weak parts: -Lack of pilot reputation points/penalties (some assholes will ram crash and push you off the track intentionally, but depends of server). -Lack of visual effects, such as sparks, exhaust fire and smoke. -Lack of realistic visual damage system and debris. -Lack of ambient sounds. And the car sound system really need to be upgraded while keeping the same idea. -Lack of track mods (yet). -Lack of weather conditions (yet).
Still one of my favourite sims. When I open the game, it always makes me feel home, nothing is weird. Easy to set-up, fast, advanced, realistic... What could you want more? Everything about and in this game is awesome. The settings are awesome, the little details that the developers put into the game to help you in some cases are awesome, the optimization is awesome, the physics, tracks and online experience to this day is still awesome. Definitely a gem.
Love this review. I'm very nostalgic for LFS and it's great to see it getting that recognition still. There's more to simulation than track layouts and brand names. "Real content" quantity is overrated.
Absolute gem of a sim. Grandaddy of them all. The updates are mega slow, but none other than LFS and GT7 give me that pure rubber feel that I so crave. They are the only two sims that feel rubber is pushing the car instead of it being a floaty block with some fake physics. LFS physics are not top notch anymore and it lacks licenced cars, but it still feels the most real to drive, and I have no idea why. I cannot express how happy I am to soon see the new massive update to the tyre model, physics and graphics. Long live LFS!
This thing is beautiful even more so after 20 years later. Literally the best driving simulator. Looking forward for more improvements from the devs. TraxionGG, thanks for covering LFS in this video! LFS ProTweaker is an awesome piece of software by the way. Broadens all the horizons
Couple of days ago was the 20th anniversary for LFS.. I joined back in 2018 i think.. I never looked away. It has the best community, made such great freinds and almost every day i play and enjoy like it's the first time.. I've proudly made 10 mods (muscle cars buses trucks suv's sedans.. Even the peel p50 😂) since the mod system came out and I'm still planning to do more and more.. It's a blessing that i knew lfs and I'm a part of this awesome sim ❤️
The tracks have such lovingly crafted and balanced detail that they still hold up against even the very latest modern sims! Most modern sims still seem to spend far, far too much of their graphics budgets on the cars instead of the circuits (iRacing being the lone exception, though they craft very unevenly detailed tracks, for example only doing 3D trees in their very latest updates almost two decades behind LFS).
About the sound system, even back in the day, you didnt use the sound system in the game. There was an app you would connect to the game that would take telemetry from the game and output extremely detailed and realistic sounds. You could barely distinguish that from the real thing in videos.
Car sound remixer or something like that. mostly used for the slow people in drifting :D but yeah even back in the day you still could use lfs sound editor. as the tweaked sound would not let you onto every server. idk why people rather use some other app than the actual game. but yet i see it all over the place. now what have we. teleport mods, grip mods etc. thing with all that is. its updated by users who mostly update maybe a year or so and then they stop updating because lfs did. making every sound made back then obsolete anyways unless saved within lfs too.
@@THEWIZARDDK3 well, I didnt even know you could mod the sounds now. Must be a new thing (as in post 2006 haha). Did a quick search on that app, thats a newer app, we used to have one that was really complex. Or maybe it was an earlier version of that, i dont remember. At one point you had 2 or 3 sound apps that each was good at one thing.
Great video guys, and great to see LFS continuing to get love after all these years! Can’t speak highly enough of this sim, the community and the devs ❤️
LFS always had a killer physics model, but the historical lack of support for modding (in fact active opposition to it) coupled with excrutiatingly slow development really killed it over time. The recent addition of mod support for cars (FINALLY) was long overdue. There's a reason games like AC have remained popular for so long--fans are able to continually produce new content, keeping the games fresh and relevant.
My greatest sim racing memories are with LFS. What a great sim and community it had back in the STCC/CTRA days. Just watching this vid brought the memories flooding back.. Simply some of the finest online racing i ever experienced, with some of the best people i've met in online gaming. So glad to see the old girl is still alive. Might have to reinstall for burst of nostalgia !
I have a terrible, low end laptop that could barely play modern "simracing" games like Assetto Corsa. Even then, I can't play over 6 drivers, because it'd literally be powerpoint presentation. Meanwhile, LFS is super smooth here, even with 20 people, even at night. Very recommended if you're a peasant.
LFS is so much fun to play or hoon around in. I started playing it back in 2006, it was my first experience with a proper simulator. I got it for the drift servers, but the community was so strong in those days I met many people, and hung out in other servers using mods like the drag racing insim and I even started doing circuit races for fun when my LFS buddies weren't online. I played it for a good 5-6 years before moving away but still checked in from time to time maybe once or twice per year. When the vehicle mods update came out it made me upgrade my license to S3 and I enjoyed those for a bit, some drift cars, F1 cars, etc. but it's just not the same anymore because pretty much all of the community are gone. Maybe if they let people make circuits/locations like they do cars it could improve even more, because I feel like tracks are the weakest link of LFS.
Live For Speed is simply still unmatched to this day. No sim has ever made me feel as good as this does with regards to tyre physics. I started playing in 2007 and bought S2 in 2008. It thought me literally everything there is to know about car control, especially when I got my G25. The mods have completely revolutionized the game. LFS 🥰
LFS is what started my sim racing addiction. I remember sitting at the pc for hours on end with my home pc and keyboard using the asdf keys for control was the worst I couldn't wait to finally get a wheel which was along time after that. When I did get a wheel it was all iracing from there on
TNice tutorials was a fantastic beginner's guide, straight to the point, very clear. As a long-ti teacher I can tell you are quite apt at teacNice tutorialng!
I still love LFS, although I don't play it enough. I use it primarily when I have an autocross jones or I can actually make a local event and need to get some practice in. Like you said it has the best VR experience with the stereoscopic mirrors and driver head movement mirroring your own, a little dash of realism that's forgotten about in other sims. You also failed to mention that the AI learns the track the more you race and gets faster in each car track combination. It would be an impressive effort made by a full studio of creators, but that it's just three guys is amazing.
One thing I love, and I mean absolutely love, about LFS is the way online racing is setup. Persistent lobbies, join in progress, and very little downtime between races makes for nonstop fun which is something most other racing sims really struggle with. Then you have optional 3rd party ranking systems and vote-for-track cycling which keeps things constantly fresh in a way a lot of other games seem to miss out. I feel like we have really moved in the wrong direction in this respect, across the industry. Now it's all about set times for races and ELO ratings which look great on paper but IMO really just dilute the entertainment in most cases. It's like simracing has found a way to simulate the shit parts of actual racing/track driving (lots and lots of waiting for questionable value) and I would much prefer we go back to the old way of just letting people race and having the fun come organically.
Loved the ability to switch any 2+seater to either LHD or RHD (even if textures were just flipped :p) Many good memories racing and drifting with a mate using a DFGT. This, GP Legends and Netkar pro really taught us a lot about handling and especially race etiquette back in the day
@@TraxionGG aah yes, I missed the original and went to rfactor 2 beta when it came up. Then gave up on sim racing until a couple of years ago. Loving your videos anyway, keep up the good work!
My first online race was using LFS. Still have it installed. The UI instantly takes me back. It had/has such a unique look and feel. I loved the cars some of which were almost exactly unlike cars of the time. Good to see its still being developed.
It's not that forgotten. I remember participating in this event. I was giving my best, spent numerous laps trying to be consistent and fast until I discovered I was 3 years too old to compete. It was that moment I realised I can only dream of average things. I won't forget it.
I ordered a pico 4 VR today to try with LFS. I am hoping my AMD Radeon pro w5700 and AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 6-Core Processor will be able to give me a reasonable experience
I always have phases playing LFS, started about 2008 and today I´m still playing with my 10 years old son. I love this sim so badly, Blackwood is a magnificent track, very very well projected. Everything in the game is delightful. I would love to learn to proper drive the RWD cars, I always let their tires hot as hell :( Tk you for this marvelous video. Tk you LFS!
LFS is still one of the best feeling sim out there, not much content and a lack of updates but i've started playing it around 2005 and it was THE game of my life and still is, played many years and couple hours everyday from 2005 to 2015 and had it back on my computer since 2019, such a great game, community, online, editor mode, everything was ahead at the time and still is in some ways. i remember playing with great drivers on those servers and maybe have played with him also ...
The other area that LFS shines: they have an actual driver rulebook that explains the overlap rule, racing room and all the other stuff needed to educate new drivers and develop racecraft, while other sims just assume everyone knows all that stuff already and then wonder why people complain about poor driving standards in their servers. That's why you almost never see LFS clips on simracingstewards.
Good old days , best sim ever ! 2005-2007 simply awesome time and a huge aktive comunity back in those days. Great racing, bloody fights for WRs in the Hotlap section and also the photoshop guys had their playground. Just thank u to everyone who was part of it =D Its really sad if u take a look at it today , about 30 drivers online worldwide on a good day and the half of it stuck on cruise servers.. =/ R.I.P. LFS ,=(
I cut my teeth on LFS back in my teens and I still return to it on occasion and it never fails to be an entertaining simming experience, with some of the closest races I’ve ever had.
Oh, I remember LFS fondly. On our first PC, my dad somehow got a demo of the game installed. no idea when and why, but it had only one race at one track (rallycross in hatchbacks I think?) but I played the life out of it. Also had GP4 and Toca Race Driver 3, which I loved, but LFS always hads something that struck a nerve that had me coming back and back again.
I had so much fun on LFS. I excelled in the FBMW, my friend was slightly faster in the GTI, but it always produced such great (short!) races! And for a bit of fun, blackwood in reverse with the XR GT Turbo, with my G25 and 6 speed at the time, it was amazing!
LFS was my first sim. Last time i popped into it was several years ago but just popped on their website and sure enough my account is still there. pretty impressive. might pic it up and get the VR out as i see they have added VR support.
I had a feeling it would be LFS :D I used to play it a lot back in the day (late 00s). I love FMB but I never really got hang of it, always burn clutch after 5 laps.
I played it in the early days. It was free and I couldn't afford buying games. So I downloaded it and it was soo much fun. One could also design their own livery, that was sick! Happy to see it still exists
I am brand new to sim racing. I just installed this today and it seems like a lot of fun. I love the concept. I definitely think the price is a little steep.
LFS was the first sim i have every played and it the one that convinced me to get a wheel. LFS does regular road cars much better than any other sim, only close one is beamng drive but it still feels inconsistent in that regard. Even after 3 years of simracing, LFS still feels like home to me. I can jump in any time and slide the cars around or get close to my best lap times. AC or AMS both drive differently, and whenever i jump from AC to AMS i always struggle. I wouldnt say LFS is easy, its just intuitive.
For me LFS has the best feeling of the car. Ive tried some other simracing games, and I dont know why but LFS was the best for me. I always really enjoyed also to see, how setups can make car much faster! Oh and those battles wheel to wheel with XFG... ;)
Because its not realistic, you push the car and it almost always goes into a sort of drift, never seen so many drifts through the corner in any other sim.
Also, the demo is ironically all you need to feel the best of the game, becuase BMW formula on Blackwood is literally epic with good competition online.
I first downloaded lfs in 2010 I think. I've played it at least once a week ever since, getting myself up to a very high level, and eventually, i managed to become a Part time driving trainer (not instructor for your license, but driver experience trainings)
Indeed, the best sim I ever played and my favorite so far. Amazing FFB I can't get anywhere else I've driven.. and the software itself is just so functional and clever..anything is a couple of clicks away, fast and reliable.
It is 100% the greatest recommendation of a game for anybody on low end hardware. I mean, midrange stuff could run it in VR with full sim racing peripherals.

It needs support for VRS DDs! The wheel has negative values turning left and positive values turning right. The force feedback is reversed only when turning left. I miss this game so much having raced on it a ton in 2014 with a G27, but I can't with my VRS.
Edit: OH MY GOSH IT WAS FIXED IN THE APRIL UPDATE!!!
iv been driving with my G25 then G2 ever since the wheels came out and still do and never had a problem :)
@@Boemel yep my G27 never had issues, I was talking about the VRS DD which is now supported
I still remember racing a full grid with my dial up internet connection. No issues and fantastic racing. Good times.
Any trick to drifting on LFS mate?
LFS still holds up and can compete with the best in the sim racing world. If the devs had fully allowed mods from the beginning, LFS would have been today's Assetto Corsa.
only one is programming (Scawen)
Still racing. They have so many community organized races happening every week. I race Formula XR series every friday for 15 years now. Still going strong with 25-50 people on the server every Friday.
1:12.98. I remember how long it took me to lap under 1:13 in the FMB at blackwood, so much memories from this game
Im stuck at 1:17 :P
Yes, it has a weak parts:
-Lack of pilot reputation points/penalties (some assholes will ram crash and push you off the track intentionally, but depends of server).
Nice memories!
There are many more professional drivers whose played LFS a lot, like R. V. Buren or Nicky Catsburg. Or amateur racer like me :D
Couldn’t agree more!
Love this review. I'm very nostalgic for LFS and it's great to see it getting that recognition still.
There's more to simulation than track layouts and brand names. "Real content" quantity is overrated.
Best mirrors in any racing game or racing simulator.
Amen!
This thing is beautiful even more so after 20 years later. Literally the best driving simulator. Looking forward for more improvements from the devs. TraxionGG, thanks for covering LFS in this video!
LFS ProTweaker is an awesome piece of software by the way. Broadens all the horizons
Played it for years since the first betas. A lot of memories.
I was astonished when I played it for the first time more than 15 years ago.
Still has a better tyre model than iceRacing or ACC.
Only true car enthusiasts played this game. End of story.
I'm lucky enough to be one of those drivers who learned it all on LFS and now I'm racing in real life. Love the video!
That's awesome!
i love when people talk about lfs it gives me hope for faster development
The absolute #1 racing sim for me! Played it long before the S1 release, all the way up until S3.
Great video guys, and great to see LFS continuing to get love after all these years! Can’t speak highly enough of this sim, the community and the devs ❤️
❤️
LFS will be in a heart of any simracer for ever...
Yet if you miss it's pleasant handling and tyre model - it's better to go for rF2 this days.
I play lfs every day. I rarely race though. I just drift 98% of the time except I use a wheel setup and not a mouse.
Runs perfectly on a low end computer aswell
100%!
I raced the FBM on Blackwood for some few years, so many epic battles. My name was ‚operative‘ if anybody remembers, greetings to all of you
Holy shit, Vale? I remember him! I had no idea!
LFS is definitely worth it especially for new sim racers.......just the basics
3:27 not even MENTIONING the fact someone is going around on a MOTORCYCLE? That's how you know LFS is special.
No other game since those old Geoff Crammond F1 games has such fantastic support for keyboard steering... reason enough for me to not let it go. :)
I still have this for Rockingham. The only laser scanned version. AND ITS NO LONGER A CAR PARK!
I heard this a few days ago! Will be interesting to see what happens next 👀
I just installed today and I swear I read about a track editor but maybe I'm wrong
Totally agree! Amazing effort all round.
I went from LFS to AC and Iracing. I was so disappointed to find out I couldnt use the mirrors as well as in a real car like I could in LFS
Yeah the lobby system was amazing and smooth. Surprised nothing's come along to try and clone it or come close to this experience.
Loved the ability to switch any 2+seater to either LHD or RHD (even if textures were just flipped :p) Many good memories racing and drifting with a mate using a DFGT.
This, GP Legends and Netkar pro really taught us a lot about handling and especially race etiquette back in the day
Couldn't agree more with that last sentence! I would throw original rFactor in there as well.
@@TraxionGG aah yes, I missed the original and went to rfactor 2 beta when it came up. Then gave up on sim racing until a couple of years ago. Loving your videos anyway, keep up the good work!
Great to hear, thanks very much!
LFS Was super fun back in the days, some unforgettable moments with GT2 and FOX ^^
You should rejoin, man!
@@kaipuro9221 Maybe sometime :D Last few years have been racing in Rocket League and Turbo Sliders unlimited 🏎 How have the mods been, and you also :)
@@Frozeni Really good, really good! Btw, 13th of January we have 3,5 hr endurance FOX Friday, join us!
1:57 , Mazepin was already in the sim when he was only 3 years old, what a GOAT
I learned drifting on LFS back in 2009 while drinking vodka in my small student apartment. Good times.
Soon LFS will be getting its 20 year anniversary update hopefully. With new track and new tire physics. i've been driving for 17 years now.
I ordered a pico 4 VR today to try with LFS. I am hoping my AMD Radeon pro w5700 and AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 6-Core Processor will be able to give me a reasonable experience
Played this before S1 game came out. So many good memories. Even have a LFS tshirt somewhere lol
It's more than a SIM. It also offers fun editing of the track and much more.. It's so much fun !
I remember the LFS drifting videos all over original youtube, that and GTA:SAMP drifting lmao, this was back in 2006. Time flies.
LFS my Childhood, made many friends racing and cruising on LsC. Good Times, never forgetti
I always have phases playing LFS, started about 2008 and today I´m still playing with my 10 years old son.
I love this sim so badly, Blackwood is a magnificent track, very very well projected.
Everything in the game is delightful.
I would love to learn to proper drive the RWD cars, I always let their tires hot as hell :(
Tk you for this marvelous video. Tk you LFS!
I've been playing since 2011. The best racing simulation you can play.
Just thank u to everyone who was part of it =D
Its really sad if u take a look at it today , about 30 drivers online worldwide on a good day and the half of it stuck on cruise servers.. =/
R.I.P. LFS ,=(
Couldn't agree more!
that little? right now there are 40 ppl in just a ride, 30 ppl in tc city 1, and like 30 others spread other s3 servers
Nearly cried watching this video
🥹
The game that got me back into gaming.
Will always love LFS!
damn, its centuries since i played this ...
I only have two game/sims in my PC BeamNG and LFS, playing it sice 2007
We used to load this to flash drives and play in middle school all the time.
What a timeless gem.
Wow, I didn't know this was still being in active development! I played this in what, 2005?? It was amazing!
Many don’t, I’d recommend fishing out your old login details and giving it a whirl!
@@TraxionGG Sure will! Can't wait to experience this with VR :)
Epic racing guaranteed 😄
Would love to see track modding in LFS.
I love LFS, I started on 2007 and I played for years after I switch to rFactor 1 for the mods mostly!
Also, the demo is ironically all you need to feel the best of the game, becuase BMW formula on Blackwood is literally epic with good competition online.
Still #1 for me 😎👍
I’m sure you are not alone!
I first downloaded lfs in 2010 I think. I've played it at least once a week ever since, getting myself up to a very high level, and eventually, i managed to become a Part time driving trainer (not instructor for your license, but driver experience trainings)
That's amazing!
It's a good option for practice car experiment and also good tho for the throwing stress out.
Look at those lfs fans :D , this video blowed up than your recent ones, A good video too!!, Keep it up
Thanks! Great to see the love for this epic sim❤️
Indeed, the best sim I ever played and my favorite so far. Amazing FFB I can't get anywhere else I've driven.. and the software itself is just so functional and clever..anything is a couple of clicks away, fast and reliable.
Love it!
It is 100% the greatest recommendation of a game for anybody on low end hardware. I mean, midrange stuff could run it in VR with full sim racing peripherals.
Absolutely agree, the driving experience is super value considering the requirements!
LFS is god tier. Any simracer worth their salt has to test themself here.
I learned how to drive in LFS, went on to pass my test first time.
