I've been shooting the 5dmk3 for years and looking to upgrade to the R6 to up our quality of our TH-cam videos. I've always used native to edit and I'm not looking forward to using proxies. Its just adding hours and disk space to my workflow which living in a tiny house space is always at a premium. Thanks for the walkthrough of this and for the R5 and R6 reviews also. Has helped me immensely with making my camera upgrade decision. Future video idea: Archiving footage. When these drives eventually die, and they will, how do we hold on to that footage or maybe its for how long do we hold on to it.
Really useful real-world advice. One question; have you noticed increased heat and reduced recording times when dual-recording for the purpose of shooting proxies internally?
I actually never tried that :/ The problem with Canon proxies is, that Canon names the proxy files different which causes the NLE to not recognize them as proxies
@@nirwin The Ninja 5+ was just announced, consider that external recorder as it handles RAW output from the R5 and the R5's 8K can be recorded externally too
Why i still shoot 1080p, on social media, no one can tell the difference. So why create all that work and quality when it gets compressed massively when uploaded.
Why didn't you start transcoding to proxies right before you go to sleep or a dinner or something in that nature? I think I would do that when I get my R5 which is still in backorder.

He already has the latest 2020 iMac which is a beast and no, a "threadripper" computer isn't going to do any better (I think Maxtech did this already). There is no hardware encoder for these types of files yet.
Have you noticed the color difference between R and R6? Potato jet noticed extra warmth on r6. So did camera conspiracies guy. I’m wondering if there is a difference between the Rs???
Camera Conspiracy shoots auto modes like a soccer mom and though entertaining, nobody should ever take his videos to be informative reviews. He was using auto white balance which probably caused the difference (vs the R5). Potato Jet is only slightly better and likes to often speak in hyperbole in his videos to get views based on the latest craze. I would definitely like to see somebody with actual experience and a good eye, like Monkeypixels, to compare this.

Hmmm, I'm thinking seriously of buying the R6, mainly for stills, but I'd like to be able shoot saleable video too (probably just interviews and short clips). A couple of questions please: 1) Do you need to create proxies even with the All-I compression, available on the R5? 2) What factor in the the R5/R6 files necessitates the use of proxies? Is it All-I vs IPB (seems not since you mention needing it for the R5 which offers All-I), is it that you must use (or much prefer to use) the H.265 rather than H.264 codec? Or is it that the files are10-bit rather than the 8-bit? Thanks for any info you may have on this.

My R6 makes files I can't view in fcpx. They come up black with no sound. When I try to make proxies it just makes a proxy of the same black file with no sound. VLC can almost play these but it stutters a lot and freezes so I think there really is an image there. But when I do anything in the editor, I can't see anything. I am on an older machine but this is my first real problem with footage. It only happens when using C-log. Any suggestions?
2.18 final cut only runs on Mac . So even the h.264 proxies will be for final cut. Great video I didn’t know about that proxies preferred excellent . For working with titles and motion gfx 🙏

I learned today, that on recent Intel CPUs, quicksync accelerates HEVC 10 Bit 4:2:2, however, NVIDIA doesn't do so and it's unlcear if and when they'll support it. I also tried decoding using quicksync, but even that was stuttering. So, gotta use proxies like it's 2001.
Does the R5 still get Image Stabilization when recording in 8K RAW? If so, which types of stabilization can remain active? Lens IS? Sensor IS? Digital IS?

Why not export 422HQ to store for use in your bts instead of trying to manage linked proxies for so long? I generally try to clear my proxies every month and keep log or req709 files for future or long term use
@@damiencooper I feel your pain. Always avoided proxies until GoPro switched to h265, when I was forced to embrace the workflow. I will say dealing with them was always great in Premiere - takes longer but feels more automated and lighter. I just switched to Resolve and that's one of the few things I miss
@@damiencooper man...anyway for the moment I tend to shoot ewith clog in HD these days as it's not so bad, but ill use the 4k in CLOG only when I have to, but keeping to HD for casual daily stuff, to save on storage , and CLog in HD is pretty good and that laggy in edits I guess
What a pain in the buttockular area! I know the flat-earth/camera-conspiracy people like to think that Canon cripples their cameras to protect the cinema line (which is asinine) buy purposely causing them to "overheat". The thing they don't get is that one of the huge issues with non-cinema cameras are the codecs (for many camera types). Canon has talked about Clog3 and lower bitrate options coming to new firmware and I have really been hoping they do add lower bitrate options that are much easier to work with. Btw, doesn't the R5 automatically generate proxies for 8K to the SD card if you set that up?

I found that the 4k 60p ProRes LT, recorded via the R6, onto the Atomos Ninja V, plays back beautifully in FCPX on my high-spec 2015 iMac - which I think is amazing.

Yes, it took me 18hrs to make proxies on my 2014 Lenovo Y50 but it makes editing R5 footage a joy. Haha.

You can also create proxies internally for the 8kraw on the R5 in setup menu under the record func+card/folder set.
Whenever I create proxies I just transcode before bed and it’s done by morning! And Thx for walking us through your flow as always helpful.

If you are on youtube then shooting 1080 and upscaling into 4k is the way to go. TH-cam will boost the quality and won't compress it as much.
I’ve heard the new macs coming out shortly will use ARM that can edit the R5 footage.

Great points but I found a good workflow for creating proxies is doing so before bed and you’ll have proxies ready when you get up. I
When shooting on the R5, I record 24, 30, and 60fps to the Ninja V in ProRes. 120fps internally, and of course 8K internally. Saves time!
Was just looking into the Ninja V. Wondering if it's worth it. Not sure for the type of stuff and how often I'll be shooting...

In FCPX...why not check the “proxy’s” box on import so it creates them as it imports the footage? Saves you a little step at least.
because I don't want proxies for all my footage. Just the R5 for example. And I don't import through the final cut importer but through drag and drop

They’re almost impossible to edit right now. But the Sony might suffer from the same issues

Ian McDonnell I do often want clips to be longer or do before or Afters. And transcoding all clips to prores takes forever and is tedious too
