    Just bought a R5C and tried to define a CLog workflow. Well... After two hours of watching TH-cam stuff from people who have no idea of what they're talking about I found this video. Thank you so much for this great and professional insight 🙂

    Excellent info for Canon R5 users, not much other material around on how to shoot correctly and if you don't set it up right before the shoot it might be unrecoverable afterwards.

    Hello mate, very useful video thank you! Just trying to get my zebra % set right for my r5 for skin tones. I thought most people recommended 70% as a general norm. But are you suggesting that when shooting in CLog that it should be 60% instead? Why is that?

    When talking about the Canon Log in the R5, you mentioned it wasn’t like the original Canon Log. Is that the Log that what was in the Canon 1DC?

    Hi Sareesh. I think H265 has great intent for capture and distribution. As you say it is the editing that's a pain. Latest Intel QuickSync can now edit Canons 4:2:2 implementation, or as I'm sure you know the M1 and up Apple Macs - apparently not much good for grading as yet though. I'm not sure about the Quick Sync transcode quality yet. Have you looked at Resolve colour managed work flows? (Resolve 16 and greatly enhanced in 17. I got the Studio 17 dongle with a free speed editor!). I think that colour managed may avoid the need for LUTs but have yet to try it myself - got other problems at present. For direct to HDR TV there is the HLG gamma, or for graded work the PQ one which are now available in some cameras. I appreciate HDR displays may not be a big market for you as yet - I've only just seen one in action here (bought it for son and daughter in law) but I think it is the future - much more impressive than the move from HD to UHD. Might make a useful USP for your marketing so I thought I'd mention it. Now to watch the rest of your very useful looking video. Cheers. BobUK.

    I really appreciate this video. You noted that an overexposure of 1.5 stops, in general, is recommended. I always get a bit confused when I hear things like overexposing to get the proper exposure, so I assume that the overexposure is relative to a measure like the camera's light meter. Is that what you mean? In my testing, to get an approximately 33 IRE for 18% grey, I was reading approximately 1 stop overexposed on the meter. That setting appeared to yield the best result but I need to do some further field testing.

    • @JamesLima
      @JamesLima 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Since the R, I always overexposed 1 stop using the camera's light meter and got good results, and I'm getting the same results with the R5 overxposing 1 stop. I would like to hear other people experiencies

    Super disagree with the Rec709 advice. The Canon technical LUT that converts CLog Rec 2020 to Rec 709 results in better looking Rec 709 (than the in camera 709). Rec 2020 also color grades better (can be pushed farther). If your only problem is you don’t have a Rec 2020 monitor yet just buy one. The Atomos monitors are affordable and reliable. Up your game to Rec 2020!

    Nice vid... when testing the canon i found the highlight rolloff quite harsh in log tho. Especially in outdoorshots the skin clipped really fast and ugly at base iso 10 bit all-i log. Unless i have full control over the light, this just isnt practical for me (mostly run and gun shooting 50% in sunny outdoors). Not sure its the dynamic range either, as this seemed much better on the gh5 even in non-log. Dont know what is the case with canon log, but no matter how much i bring the exposure down and do every soft-rolloff trick in post, the rolloff is just quite harsh...sony slog performs much smoother there... really wish they wouldve put clog2 or 3 in there, another canon cripple-hammer move to save the c70?

    • @tazzamund
      @tazzamund 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You mention you’re at base iso. If you mean you’re at the base iso for the R5 - iso 100 - then I expect your highlights will be clipped, and light skin could be clipped the way you described. If you mean you’re at the base iso Canon designed for clog (iso 400) or clog3 (iso 800), then it sounds like you’ve overexposed, and need to close your aperture down, or use an ND filter. Perhaps a variable ND filter would shoot your run and gun style? Sorry if these are basic points for you - I see you’ve shot log on Panasonic & Sony, so you probably know all this already.

    • @m0nztam0nk
      @m0nztam0nk 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tazzamund hey, thanks for the pointers and constructive ideas. Yes, i was at the intended optimal iso (400) at the time but no matter the over/under/middle-exposure, in bright direct sunlight i either had really underexposed subject or harsh clipping highlights…sonys slog3 on the a7s3 or panasonics vlog behave much better here. I will however add, that the recent samples ive seen with clog3 seem a lot better. In fact i just ordered an r6 (for rent) to try clog3 once more and am quite interested to see if it makes a major difference.

  • @petrub27

    Bullshit camera. Rec709 color space? Is that a joke?
    Also, canon applied zebra in a strange way. On my bmpcc 4k the monitoring lut won't change the false color or the waveform. I have to bake it in for that. On canon is the opposite
