  • PhD student from MIT’s Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Liang Shi said people once believed that with the existing consumer-grade computer hardware, it’s impossible to do real-time 3D holograms. It’s going to take decades before it would be viable, but he figured out a way to cut that time.
    Holographic image is not just made up in the movies, it's being created as we speak. Shi’s team took a different approach from what was first developed in holograms, where laser beam would split, half the beam is used to illuminate the subject and the other half used as a reference for the light waves phase.
    Then we had computer-generated holograms, it would avoid these difficulties by simulating the optical setup, but this would slow the computation to a crawl. So what did he do to prevent this problem, he let the computer teach physics to itself.
    With this breakthrough the performance only took mere milliseconds when crafting holograms from images with depth information. With LiDAR sensor, from iPhone 12 Pro can produce real-time 3D holography, what is even better is the tensor network requires less than 1 MB of memory.

    Much hype speeche, nearly no content. Conclusion of the video: AI learns physic, Holograms still out of reach till we have a projector that is safe and in a small formfactor.

      SK Telecom did an amazing job bringing a dragon to life in a baseball stadium. It was 2019. You can search it on TH-cam. Was explaining holographic tech's utility of perception control to an acquaintance, they were sceptical. I told them to search "SK Telecom dragon" on TH-cam and he asked me, "How did the dragon break the screen!?" Lmao.

    • @rizzo-films
      @rizzo-films ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd say it's the next stage in AR. For now, AR is only possible to be viewed through a device, like glasses or a phone. Highly developed hologram tech would be able to project those same visuals and the same data in front of you but instead of using an interface, you could see it with the naked eye and possibly interact with it, also without an intermediary. It wouldn't be private, so it wouldn't fully replace AR, unless it included some kind of refraction tech with an eye or face sensor that blocks the hologram if viewed from a different angle than the user's.
