  • Proto Hologram is betting that companies will view their 7-foot-tall holographic projection boxes as an alternative for in-person meetings. At least a half-dozen startups and giants like Google and Microsoft already are.
How can you be somewhere without actually being there? According to Proto, the answer lies in "holoportaion." Proto devices are life sized high definition hologram projection boxes with shadows that can operate in brightly lit rooms giving the illusion of lifelike human imagery. Founder David Nussbaum has a long history with hologram technology and is known for controversially bring Tupac back to life in digital form for a Coachella performance in 2012. With Proto he hopes to expand this technology from being able to diagnose patients in real time, to avoiding business flights for in-person meetings.

Its not a hologram its a giant phone with a big screen

Yeah, I'd say it's only a 'hologram' if you see different sides of the person when looking at the hologram from different angles. If you see the same image no matter where you stand, you're looking at a flat image.
Given that they appear to only have a camera filming the person from one direction (and talk about people being able to film using an app on their phone, implying you only need to be filmed from one direction for the hologram to work), it would seem you only actually see a 2D image of a person made to look 3D by casting their shadow onto the back of the box. $65,000 is a lot to pay for that parlor trick.

It is literally just a shoddy and severely expensive version of a phone...? Why would you ever get this? A large tv screen will do the same thing without needing to really learn any new skills, taking up tons of space, not even mentioning what this will do to your electrical bill and how this thing costs more than a brand new car or a small house...
Edit: oh. It's an NFT ploy. Got it. Makes sense. That's all I needed to know.

The whole point of having this is to have the effect of an "illusional hologram". With a TV it would be obvious that the image in coming from within. This device makes it seems like it is "floating or magical".

Did anyone else catch the fact they wanted holograms from cars. Anyone else get any warning signs that it might create distracted drivers. Let me 'try' to give them the most favorable interpretation of how that line got said. The most innocent reason one might advertise specifically that aspect of their product might be their overexcitement over their new techno-toy that they fail to see the broader implications of what they suggest I.E., distracted drivers. What I think is more likely is probably that they just hope you don't notice the obvious safety hazard. Also, anyone notice that they mention NFT's in the same ad that later pitches rather abruptly toward emphasizing that one of their primary markets would be CEO's. It kind of feels like their trying to crosswires between NFT bros to make them assume they might have the capital to make an 'investment' in this product. Following the previous line of questioning they have yet to mention how much power the thing uses. Based on the scale of what they display in the ad I can't imagine that this 'new' technology is very power friendly. I can guarantee that any business worth its salt would be shouting from every rooftop they can reach the amazing feature of their product, like for example not being an expensive overhead cost due to power requirement. In addition, they mention 7-foot-tall holographic image and they really didn't discuss the downsized consumer friendly version for very long. I can't help but to notice that 7-foot-tall is somewhat of a societal standard for how tall men should be. Now I'll admit right here might be a total coincidence, but it is none the less still suspicious that they mention an image of that scale when surely their own more cost-effective hologram would take advantage to use it for smaller scale and shrink in size to limit the overhead cost of its power requirement, it almost seems like they want people to find the smaller version less palatable. It just doesn't make sense unless you're trying to advertise this as a replacement for zoom unless you were actively trying to advertise product as not simply communication equipment but more like as a vanity/status symbol. I also noticed that they were showing off the ability with their technology to show adjusted images of yourself and wow a whole new way to expensively apply a filter on yourself to catfish another wave of rich people. Are they trying to advertise to people that don't like the way they look subconsciously, if it is I don't see why they wouldn't say that unless they were trying to keep certain stigmas away from them. Which fair play on advertising wise but still looks super shady. I just noticed while re watching that they just offered it as an alternative to mirrors to avoid actively trying to wear the cloths your trying, half the point of trying on cloths is seeing how it feels to wear it and that's without mentioning that they already showed the technology's capability to apply filters to a person in real time possibly distorting your image in a way that might make you look 'better' than how the outfit would actually make you look. The applications of manipulating a customer are there and actively by the implications that the scenario implies that could be an intended use case. The amount of faith in a company to never manipulate the way you look to get you more likely to buy something is actually absurd. Now I'm going to be clear the product obviously has a use case, but it has a dozen cheaper options that don't actively deteriorate your own faith in the reality you see. Also, to reiterate, they mentioned the downsized consumer friendly version once and proceeded to not use it in the proceeding examples of use cases for their own product like they wanted to have the sole focus be on the most expensive version which as a reminder was 65K+ to buy and 15K-25K to rent for one event. They don't even mention the price for the "Proto M". Also comparing NFTs to museum art is not a good look but a good reminder for all that both are used to lower the taxes of the ultra-wealthy. Also, it is an extremely optimistic statement that "Holograms are going to be commonplace" 4:30 given that only the more expensive version has had its price range revealed. Also, he insinuated that you can't see a shadow in a zoom call which is both odd and false. Finally, I apologize for how many times I used also but the more I watched the video the more. though at the end of the day this is all conjecture, I'm sure generally we'll find our way in life. I wish all who see this a pleasant day.
    Sincerely
    -The Void

Man, you really have a lot of free time. Just chill and appreciate the efforts and advancements in technology. Expensive/ cheap, high/low power consumption etc are relative to ones needs and pocket size. It differs from individual to individual. I liked the concept, maybe you didn't, its OK.

@@007theluckyboy Wow didn’t exactly expect a reply to this one. Much less a year later. I’ll keep this one brief. I never said I was against the idea however I saw several warnings signs and thus I wanted to advise people should they still be interested to approach with caution. My primary goal was for comment I made a year ago was to give a measured response to help people see any potential obstacles that might be deal-breakers to them. I don’t have anything against the advancement of technology however the concept alone isn’t exclusively a good thing. Better facial recognition technology isn’t always used to better unlock your phone but also to better surveillance on you from the state or corporation if they can get away with it. Also the statement relative in terms of the price point might need some extra context as I want to give you the benefit of the doubt. Regardless of disagreement I wish you nothing but a pleasant day.
      Sincerely
      -The Void
