Enjoyed your discussion re: Trouble shooting during the keep and it brings to mind ideas and experiences that we evolve through our time with the dogs. A dogs diet is a mix of Protein, Fats, Carbohydrates and mineral and water, most of which can be provided by the premium high performance kibble available now based upon research on canine performance. An over reliance on supplementation outside of what's listed as the essential necessities can cause an onset of undesirable setbacks in a dog's health and performance. A dog may need up to six weeks for it to start to "learn" how to use fats like coconut oil as a fuel source. Efforts to build a dog's red cell count by going overboard on iron supplements can have dire effects on a dog. Adding more carbohydrates than necessary can contribute to what we see as "overheating". In the past, fanciers subscribed to the notion that "carbohydrate loading" was necessary for peak performance, when much research has shown it is the utilization of fat that allows a dog to extend its capacity for extended extreme energy expenditure over the course of a contestual situation as well throughout the duration of his conditioning period or keep. We need to understand the bioavailability of performance enhancement nutition that we can squeeze out of 4 oz of meat and the amount of time it takes for the dog to digest and use in its maintenance and overall conditioning. Can two hard boiled eggs and some added egg whites provide the necessary boost in protein over and above the 30/20 performance dog food we use as our feed base? What about using whey protein. What about the use of two handfuls of oatmeal or rice or two slices of bread. Should we use kale or collard greens as some have done. What are the effects of Siberian ginseng, or what was known as DMG-15, of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) to restore a dogs pH balance and help stave off cramping and muscle soreness due to lactic acid buildup. Can a pinch of corn starch give a much needed energy boost or Karo syrup or Vertex and its accompanying hydration product by CPN. Can ZMA supplements make a dog incredibly powerful? What are the effects of Azium if it is employed in the last days of a keep. I'm glad that you both stressed the importance of rest for rest, recuperating and rejuvenation. I've departed from the six-day work one day rest week and was fortunate to have the encouragement from an old timer to rest my dog 10 days prior to the event. My opponent's dog had three days to do all that resting, recuperating and rejuvenating while mine had ten days to do so. The term hyper-compensation or peaking occurs during the tapering period of the keep as Schoolboy mentions, the cutting back off work and allowing the dog to store energy that will be used in it's athletic event. I don't mean to sound as if I'm a know it all but we learn through our inquiry into such things. The burden of bringing a dog to "making weight is greatly enhanced by knowing how to find a dog's pit weight. I was taught to cut a dog's feed in half for a month while handwalking as the dog loses its gut fat. Attention must be paid to ascertain at what point is the dog at it's lightest yet remaining strong. Keeping a dog two pounds over the weight through the larger part of the keep along with the careful monitoring of its weight on a daily basis should tell you if you need to adjust your feed. Weighing a dog several times a day with a hanging scale and a shoestring will give you idea as to where a dog's weight will be when its empty. Knowing what his morning weight is will show you if the dog weight is over fluctuating and knowing what his empty weight tells you if you are within striking distance of the contractual weight. Again, my apologies for jumping right in on your discussion, but after listening to your presentation I couldn't help but feel that excitement of getting one ready for a show. Historically speaking, as always. Yours in sport. ♥️
No apologies necessary and the information you gave is valuable and comes from experience. What you wrote should be written down by others and tested because it can help youngsters and older dogmen may adjust what they do to get better performance out of their dogs. I've always stressed when adding new products to their feed to give the dog three months to adjust. May seem like a long time but it worked best for me. What I did was feed the same thing in keep that I did in daily feed so there was no adjustment needed and the supplements I gave were less than the recommended dosage because most of what I supplemented was in their food already. More rest does not hurt them but not enough can. I didn't keep my dogs heavy before keep because I'm building them up,not cutting alot of fat. Thank you for your input. It's greatly appreciated. Respect to you
I've listened to the hunterman series at least 30 times and I catch something new ever time If only pet dog owners knew dogs like the dogmen of days gone by
Thanks this video has helped a lot much respect . I'm a young buck with a high dive chocolate bulldog. He has finished and eaten his trophies, groundhogs rabbits and cats despite not having his papers. He is also very smart & In tune with me. I'm learning a lot from you and other legendary dogmen He is my boy. I look forward to your videos and knowledge. Much respect.
You're welcome and your support is greatly appreciated. Your dog is proof that good dogs can come from anywhere and the proof is in his results. It's great having a dog like that and we wish you all the best. Salute to you. More vids on the way.
24 hours out for me. I work and feed them to the time of the show. If you're on a multiple card show and you're not the first one up then you have to guesstimate it.
I fed adults once a day. Some people fed twice but I could monitor their weight better and have them empty out at the same time feeding once a day. 24 hours out meaning I fed 24 hours before each workout.
Im an avid follower of your content richard like i said its absolute gold especially these qith hunter man the combined knowlege of both of you is outstanding 👌👌 in learing something new every video , would it be possible if you could put a video up of how you used to rub a down down after every workout ???? Could you show it on a dog as iv never been shown my friend and mentor passed away before i had a chance to ask him iv a thirst for knowledge and want to do things correctly , keep up the great content much respect
I appreciate your support and the Hunterman vids are special to me. I has a rubdown video but not with a dog but I'll try and make one in the future using a dog when I visit a friend.
Hunterman has to be a veterinarian or one of his family members is. He has so much scientific info on these animals
He's very knowledgeable and a protégé of Mr Bill. Hunterman can break conditioning down to a T.
Thanks I just learn alot from my mentor who's a vet and as a young kid I studied veterinarian ins and outs in school
Thanks to both of you guys
