Jacob deGrom has been the best pitcher in baseball for quite a few years now. Unfortunately, recent injury problems has hindered his full potential. The biggest example of this was in 2021, where deGrom started off the season on a path towards the greatest season ever.

It’s really tough not seeing Jake in a Mets uniform he was my favorite starter on the team back in 2015 by far and watching his ascent to being the best pitcher in the league was awesome. I hope he can have some good seasons with the Rangers but injuries seem to just plague him lately.

One of the craziest parts of this stretch was that he also was hitting really well.
Consider this: 12 starts in Degrom had given up 7 runs total (4 earned). He had produced 10 runs as a hitter. (RBI+R-HR)

The funny thing is with most pitchers the concern of getting hit hard is making a mistake to a good hitter, that wasn’t really the case with him. DeGrom in 2021 didn’t make mistakes and wasn’t even trying to fool hitters all that much, in most of his starts he basically threw nothing but fastballs and sliders and always in pretty much the same location (just below the batter’s chest, edge of the plate on his glove side). The thing was even knowing that, most hitters just genuinely couldn’t catch up to it.
He did all this and blew his arm out and stealing money

The interesting thing is, according to tread athletics, DeGrom actually felt more mechanically smooth after adding velo to his pitches. He reportedly stated that he was not trying to throw harder, rather he was focused on optimizing his mechanics.
Same thing happened to Harvey.
Saw him at Citi Field for his first home start last season. I must say, he’s one of the best athletes I’ve ever seen play live. Utterly dominant.

Can we stop comparing degrom 2021 to Gibson 1968. Nothing against degrom, great pitcher and I felt terrible for him that he couldn’t stay healthy for the rest of the season and 2022. But Gibson was never taken out of a game in 1968, 34 starts, 28 complete games/ 13 shutouts. And he was pinch hit for the rest of the time. A 1.12 era in over 300 innings. Degrom was 1.08 in 92 innings and he didn’t pitch after early July. They are not the same.
Once again not hating on degrom, or acting like a boomer, but the facts are the facts
different amounts of strain on the body in today's game than in the 60s. deGrom averages 100 on is FBs and 91 on his slider. Gibson's average velo was around 91-92 and definitely wasn't spinning it as much as today's pitchers do. He also had a SO/9 six points lower than deGrom meaning he was striking out less betters per game and therefore threw less pitches per game. The league was also heavily in pitchers favor back then. Gibsons 1.12 was iconic but if you put that against the league average of 2.98 (The best since the deadball era) it might not stand out as much as deGrom's 1.08 with a league average of 4.26. Not trying to make any objective statements just offering another perspective.

But you still had the Gibson, Koufax, bunning, and young seavers, Carlton, Ryan and Sutton. I know I missing out on other great power pitchers then but those guy still get their strikeouts. But ok if Gibson avg 91-92 on his fastball, what wrong with that? He know how to pitch and stay feel. If degrom throw 100 but can’t go more than 5 innings without get hurt, I don’t want him. His velocity want up and his injuries want up as well

i was at that game! 15 strikeouts and degrom got two hits. even though the stadium was about 20% capacity, the place was electric. very grateful to have seen one of the greatest pitching performances of recent years

Hated having him leave us but can’t deny he always have peak performance when he could on the Mets
I can say i grew into baseball watching and idolizing degrom and it kills me that hes no longer a met. Even if the injuries make sense for the mets looking the other way, i wish him the best and i know he’ll have a return to form sooner or later.

He is the definition of the term in sports. He just needs to dial it back one tick for longevity’s sake.
Not sure I'd call him a glass cannon, per se. What he was doing was just not physically sustainable IMO. I don't find it a coincidence that he added 5 mph to his fastball and then got hurt. Is it reasonable to ask a pitcher to do his best Aroldis Chapman impression for 6 innings a night and expect him to make it through the season?

@@mrmacross yup, it was fools gold. I think a lot of elite pitcher would have been able to do what Degrom did, if they went 100% every innings, but thats not sustainable
In the end, de Grom's greatness will always be remembered as a Met because there's no way he is doing in Texas what he ever did in New York. de Grom at his best was insane and this is coming from someone who saw Doc in the early years and knows full well about Seaver. Glad I watched it in person and as a fan.

The difference is that Gibson had a 1.12 ERA and pitched over 300 innings. No way deGrom or any other pitcher will ever pitch 300 innings in a season, let alone have a 1.12 ERA.
Great video. It's such a shame he's run into health issues like this. Who knows what kind of numbers he would have pulled off. Easily a HOF talent but won't get in. I don't think a lot of fans realize how ridiculously dominant deGROM was for those few seasons. It was so tough watching as a Met fan and holding your breath every single pitch he would throw

Best pitcher to ever pitch when healthy
He will be on the DL every year for Texas. He's already 34 or 35. His elbow Is fried.
From 2017-2020, DeGrom was a reliably excellent and dominant Cy Young winning pitcher who was metrically the best in the sport. In ‘21 he was inhuman….his starts resembled 6 innings of outrageously dominant closer style performance. Seeing an all world relief pitcher look untouchable for an inning is expected, seeing the same thing for 5-7 innings at a time start after start was unreal.
i miss degrom sfm. I cant wait for his return and see how he adapts and continues to tear through batters.

Was forwarded here after commenting on the SRS Todd Frazier video, very good video, though one thing was missing, it has to be more so talked about how deGrom also had an insanely good season on the batting end along with the insane pitching. He had a .500BAbip in 2021. It would be interesting to see a part two of this that focused on the batting and how insane this could've been as an overall season.
Anyways, LGM, let's see what the future holds for this team!
It is too bad he didn't stay healthy. At his peak, he was the best starting pitcher I ever saw. Magnificent.

True, but you do have the factor in that other pitchers in that season were also pitching 300 innings and average ERAs were also very low. It was the dead ball era.

@@panner11 No, Gibson did not pitch in the dead ball era. The dead ball era ended in 1920, 15 years before Gibson was even born.
In 1985 Dwight Gooden was more dominant than Degrom's best season. Gooden went 24-4, 1.53 ERA, 268 SO, winning the pitching triple crown and with 16 CG. The game has changed but Degrom unfortunately could never pitch beyond the 7th inning consistently and be dominant. His ERA would balloon if forced to pitch more innings.
It’s crazy how Jacob deGrom was literally a shortstop
Jake’s rise was really incredible to watch. Dude was drafted as a shortstop in some throwaway round. Came up around the same time as guys like Harvey, Wheeler, Syndergaard, Matz and Montero. All guys who were top 100 prospects, a few of which were top 20.
DeGrom’s minor league numbers were OK. Nothing special. I remember him being viewed as a throw-in candidate for trades to bring in offense. Guys like Nick Franklin lol.
It’s crazy that when you fast forward to today, not only is he better than all of those guys, but he’s possibly the most dominant pitcher the Mets have ever had. Definitely the best Mets pitcher I’ve seen in my lifetime.
It's pretty silly to say he "nearly" pitched the best season ever when he had 92 IP. Obviously, he was great, but the actual greatest season candidates pitched more than twice as many innings. It's also incredibly unlikely he would have been able to maintain his pace for the rest of the season. In Pedro's 2000 season in which he set the ERA+ and WHIP records, he had an ERA of 0.99 in his first 91 IP. deGrom's 1.08 ERA may qualify as the best in a player's first 15 starts, but Pedro's was better in the same number of innings, he just needed 12 starts to reach that IP total instead of 15. It's hard to find mid-season ERA+ numbers from the past, but given the offensive environment (2000 was the highest scoring season in the past century), his ERA+ at that point would have logically surpassed deGrom's 373. Pedro fell off a bit in his remaining 125 IP, but he actually had another 125 IP unlike deGrom and still finished the single season record for ERA+ and WHIP. deGrom didn't "nearly" do anything. He had a good first half, but in the end his season ended up fairly comparable in ERA and IP to some of the great closer seasons of all time, nowhere near the greatest Starting Pitcher seasons.

As a Mets fan who watched his entire career, there was something almost unnerving about how dominant he was in ‘21. He had legitimately added velocity for 6-7 consecutive years and was suddenly throwing 102 as a minted multiple Cy Young winner approaching his mid 30’s. It seemed too good to be true. Of course, it was.
This season from De Grom was what actually brought me back to baseball, so I thank him for that

Yeah when he was first injured back in 2021, at that point he wasn't seen as an injury prone player, but when he kept getting pushed back in 2022, and then even in 2023, I think at this point it's always going to be a concern.

That’s what Kershaw been doing last couple years I know he’s older but then Degrom but if only making 22 starts keeps you healthy then I’m all for degrom only making that many. I just want to see this man dominate in the postseason again he is electric!

Unreal that after the Mets winning the NL Pennant in 2015, the Mets no longer have Degrom -Harvey - Noah - Wheeler - Matz after the 2022 season.
Those starting pitchers were supposed to create something special in the future for the Mets.
Mets made wildcard game and lost it in 2016, and then that was it in terms of postseason appearances, until the 2022 season.
And also, I just never imagined that Degrom would have become the best pitcher out of all those Mets pitchers, mainly since Degrom was an infielder before being converted to a pitcher
2:41 just to clarify, tunneling means throwing the pitches in the same trajectory most of the way to the plate, and then having them diverge at the last second. jomboy has some great overlays of degroms fastballs and sliders looking identical until 10 ft from the plate, and then zooming in opposite directions. tunneling DOESNT mean releasing everything from the same armslot, though that's important too
That start in Colorado was the best stuff he ever had. Maybe it’s the thin air and elevation but his fastball had more ride than any other time.

The problem is, Major League Baseball didn't start in 1947. It started in the 1860s/70s. I realize segregation was bulls***, but that doesn't erase the accomplishments of those who played before '47, which just happens to be when some of baseball's most elite flamethrowers took the mound. If you're going to say "greatest season ever", it should be just that -- the greatest season *ever*.
Wait, you're talking about it like he threw three games or had a perfect preseason and then was out. He made 15 starts, threw 92 innings. Why does every pitchers performance have to lead the league in ERA, stirkeouts, games started, saves, innings pitched, most positive comments by your father in law, etc. to be considered great?
I probably watched almost every pitch he threw from 2017-2022. Same with Kershaw at his prime. It kind of spoils you. This is Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel - everyone else starts to look like a house painter.
He is the single greatest pitcher to ever live no one has better anything than him. I hope he comes back and is back to form but that prob won’t happen and that’s sad cause he doesn’t have enough innings or seasons to realistically make the HOF

I'll never get over how many Mets fans trashed DeGrom during the off-season.
It was just a bunch of children and fake fans. Every met fan I know wants him to do good and misses him. I understood why the Mets let him go because of the salary but still most mets fans still root for him. But yea just sucks that people were hating on him for no reason after he was the only bright spot on the team for years. But just know most mets fans do still love him it’s just those idiots who are clearly not real fans of they are hating on one of the best pitchers in franchise history 😂
It still makes me sick to see many Mets fans trash him after all he accomplished with us. He gave us wonderful memories and amazing baseball to watch during some very forgettable years. Fans really should be more grateful. I really do think they're in the loud minority though. I get why the Mets let him go because there was no way they were gonna sign him for the amount Texas did and I also get why he had to jump at the offer immediately. Baseball is a business and many fans don't get that aspect of it. It's a lot more complicated than we think. I root for our guys first, but I still keep up with deGrom in Texas and I hope he does well. We'll see him in the Mets HOF someday.

All I gotta say now is that the baseball world better watch tf out for DeGrom, he joined the Rangers for a ring to be scorned for it, but now the naysayers get to watch him return to a team who won it all WITHOUT him. DeGrom is going to add 10-15 wins to their record by himself next year, and more rings are likely in their future.

Whatever method he used to increase his fastball speed for three straight seasons might well have ended his career.
deGrom was great when he was out there, no question about that. But consider that he only pitched 92 innings in 15 games; that's only 6.1 innings per start. I don't like comparing his ERA, pitching when he knew he had a short leash, against guys who were expected to go 8 or 9 innings and conserved energy.
Also, deGrom's increased four-seamer velocity and his recent spate of injuries doesn't seem like a coincidence at all. Why should anyone feel surprised that a guy throwing six innings and throwing as hard as Aroldis Chapman got hurt?
So yeah, he was amazing on the mound, but he had an unsustainable pitching style. From my perspective, it isn't that he was having the greatest season ever and then he unfortunately got hurt. He was pushing his body beyond its limits, making his stats in the short run good, but making him due for injury.
Mets were honestly smart letting Degrom go...

Yankee fan here. Degrom had the greatest pitching run I’ve seen since Pedro. He was ridiculous. Sad he’s not retiring a Met but they never gave him run support.

Not really sure you can really say Dedrom was a "sure win" when the Mets usually couldn't score many runs to support him. The Mets were just as likely to loss 1 to 0 or 2 to 1 or whatever as they were to win when he pitched.

A guy could have a 4.00 era and have 15-20 wins vs a guy with a 2.50 era having 10-13 wins because of a lack of run support.
History is filled with great players on subpar teams, I.E..Trout, Ohtani, Ernie Banks, etc..
I've seen Halladay, Kershaw, Verlander, Scherzer, P Martinez, and Bumgarner play at their peaks. I'd take DeGrom over any of them. Never seen a more unhittable pitcher, just wish he had more opportunities to pitch in October

His peak is absolutely first ballot hall of fame worthy. But he probably needs a few more healthy seasons so he doesn’t get left out like Lincecum

He's at least 1k more innings away from consideration and at that rate it would be at least 5 more years. To put into perspective, he's only thrown 60 more innings in his career than Mariano Rivera. If he could get into the range of Lefty Gomez for starts and innings pitched, then possibly yes.

He's the most effortless hard thrower in the game though. The problem is he's built like a twig and he's in his mid 30s. The hard throwing relievers that usually have very short careers typically have a very violent motion. In DeGrom's case its age and his build -- and the fact he's a starter the end result in injury plagued. I will say this though. Players today get hurt way more often and IMHO it has to do with excessive non-baseball specific workouts so they pull muscles and get hurt a lot more.
