    • @benikenbenniken760
      @benikenbenniken760 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@joshuahogan3475 Absolutely! B5 from its 2nd season onward is phenomenal! Star Trek: Next Generation, for example, took several seasons to get its footing, but B5's first season, in my opinion, is one of the worst first seasons of a Sci-fi show I have seen. It was too campy, corny, awkward, and an extreme amount of exposition dump that bogged everything down. The visuals, props, and prosthetics were abysmal. The actors/actresses were also still figuring out their characters (which is normal and fine) and I instantly enjoyed certain characters like Lando, Vir, Lennier, and Garibaldi. Though I was very glad when Sinclair was replaced, and that Delenn and G'kar character types shifted in the seasons after.
      All of this to say, that B5's first season was horrendous but what the writers, cast, and crew did with it is astounding! To date, B5 is my absolute favorite sci-fi show when it comes to story, world building, and closure.
      I am very glad to be able to share my love for B5 with all you. :)

    Ahh, superweapons. Where would fiction be without them? (Props for the Dakara Superweapon, too - always nice to see Stargate get a mention!) Here's another handful to add to the pile...
    *Xenomorphs,* _Alien_ _universe:_ One common theory behind the origin of the Xenomorphs is that they were designed as self-propagating scorched-earth bioweapons. Seed a planet with a cargo ship full of eggs, and within a few years, it's as good as depopulated - or requires so much investment by the defenders to clear out that they'll be focused on that instead of fighting the Pilots/Engineers/Space Jockeys that dropped the eggs in the first place. Alternately, one short story suggested that they might have also been used _defensively:_ rather than infecting and ruining enemy civilizations, they might have been seeded to form a perimeter of dead worlds around their master's last-stand planets. Creepy.
    *Celestial* *Orrery,* _Necron_ _Empire,_ _40K:_ A relic of the War In Heaven between deathless robots and reptilian overlords in the time when dinosaurs still ruled the Earth, this stunningly detailed model of the Milky Way galaxy recreates every single star in miniature, and tracks their conditions and movements in real time. As magnificent a work of art as it is, and as useful in navigation as it might be, its military value is impressive as well: one of its functions is to cause stars to go into a supernova state, practically with the push of a button. No need to send warships like the Andromedan nova bombs; the Celestial Orrery works completely remotely. It has some drawbacks, in that blowing up stars this way is messy and ruins a lot of real estate for light-years in all directions, but if you're looking for area-denial weapons, this one is pretty impressive.
    *Molecular* *Disruption* *Device,* _Ender's_ _Game:_ A remarkably powerful little gizmo, this weapon touches off a small energy field that breaks the electron bonds that hold molecules together for everything within its blast radius. That's pretty impressive on its own, but what makes this weapon really powerful is its secondary effect: each molecule that gets broken this way sets up its own energy field that does the same thing. This field weakens as it spreads out, but strengthens when it encounters another molecule to break, causing a chain reaction that will spread to everything nearby. It will one-shot a starship if it hits the hull anywhere, regardless of armor hardness or material: if it's made of _matter,_ the MD Device will eat it. This gets terrifying when you start dropping these things on planets: if even one gets through to the atmosphere, then the chain reaction means the entire planet is doomed.
    *Project* *Pluto,* _real_ _life:_ Yes, really. This doomsday weapon was an unmanned nuclear-powered bomber, designed as a revenge weapon in case of a successful Soviet first strike. It used a fission-powered ramjet engine to fly at supersonic speeds along a pre-programmed route, dropping its payload of atom bombs on designated target cities along the way, and was designed to fly racetrack patterns over the Russian heartland at extreme low altitude until it either crashed, or its nuclear fuel decayed to the point where it couldn't sustain the ramjet anymore. Potentially, that could take *years,* with this thing zipping around laying waste through radiation and sonic booms in giant ovals of flattened, glowing screw-you the whole time. They actually tested the engine back in the early 1960's, though the Pentagon decided to call off the project shortly afterward. (My theory is they'd hired a supervillain to head up the design team, but he retired in the late '50s when NASA didn't go for his orbital-bombardment side project.) It's not as world-ending as the other superweapons on this list, but it gets a mention because _IT_ _WAS_ _A_ _REAL_ _THING._

    • @gregorygreenwood-nimmo4954
      @gregorygreenwood-nimmo4954 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      And the Xenomorphs have also inspired other such species that are either dedicated biological weapon creatures or who possess such a function as a side effect of their nature or other agenda. An obvious example would be the Tyranids from 40K, who destroy biomes as they feed and consume all biological matter on planets, and can even burrow into a planet's magma mantle to extract biologically active minerals from bedrock and lava, which can cause so much disruption to a planet's structure that it breaks apart. Planet killing is more the side effect than the intent here, but the result is the same and the Swarm feeds on the scale of entire galaxies, which I think should allow them to qualify, unclean Xenos scum that they are.
      The Zerg are a similar case, though on a smaller scale.

    • @jamoecw
      @jamoecw 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      nice list, here's some more:
      *Y22A-1 Temblor Bomb* , _Wing Commander_ : The Y22A-1 Temblor Bomb was designed as a high tectonic-frequency weapon with a 267.5 megaton yield. Its projected aim was to destroy planets by means of triggering earthquakes. It was designed so that if delivered with absolute precision to an active fault line, the resulting sonic waves would be powerful enough to destabilize the tectonic make-up of the planet's surface. The resulting earthquake would spread across the planet and rip the planet apart as its surface was ravaged by the extreme seismic activity. The Temblor Bomb could be deployed on virtually any planet, but it was most effective on worlds with an unusually high level of tectonic instability. It could be fired like a torpedo from heavy fighters whose payload allowed for such valuable cargo.
      *TCS Behemoth* , _Wing Commander_ : The Behemoth took the form of a super dreadnought, and by the time of its completion was one of the largest vessels in the Confederation's arsenal. The vessel was designed as a large series of superconducting energy amplification conduits, focusing 500,000,000 gigawatts against a single point of impact on any target. The target at the end of that point, be it a warship, space station, or even a planet, would be utterly destroyed.
      *Tiberium* , _Command and Conquer_ : Silicon based life form that 'eats' a planet and reproduces itself, slowly turning a planet into tiberium. Tiberium is a valuable tool for mining which makes extraction of resources easy and has many beneficial properties as well. The substance is a silicon based life form similar to fungus, and can be gathered and processed into usable material. It is so useful that only this substance is needed to produce anything, as it has essentially all the resources of the planet within itself in an easily extracted material.

      Star Wars galaxy also has more doomsday devices than showed:
      - Sun Crusher, called also "doomsday Mary Sue" - light freighter sized, nearly indestructible (to get rid off that, they had to toss into a black hole) ship, capable to cause and survive effects of supernova. Responsible for destroying Carida system
      - Tarkin station - essentially lightweight DS-1, blew up world of Aeten II in order to quickly harvest all stygium crystals
      - Centerpoint station - ancient (created about 35k-40k BBY) giant space station in Corelian system, capable of reshaping or destroying entire systems (it created Corelian system, as well as Maw - cluster of black holes near Kessel). Before 18 ABY station was dormant, allowing for colonisation. During the events of Corelian insurrection station was accidentally activated, what caused destruction of settlements inside. Station was destroyed during Second Galactic Civil War, allowing Abeloth to leave her (?) prison
      - Mass shadow generator - possibly one of first attempts to use FTL interdiction technology. Created by the Old Republic during Mandalorian wars, it destroyed Mandalorian and Republic fleets. Moreover, it effectively destroyed place of its deployment, Malachor V
      - Alpha Red virus - biological weapon, created to kill Yuuzhan Vong and their creations. Used only once - while it was sucessful in killing Vongs, they tried to use it against Zonama Sekot. After signing peace with YV, all data and samples were destroyed to prevent Bothans from using Alpha Red in their holy war
      - Darksaber - even more lightweight DS-1. This superweapon was just main weapon of DS-1, reactor, basic engines to move around and hyperdrive. Created for one of the Hutts by designer of both DS. It failed to even fire once due to low quality of components and labour
      - Galaxy Gun - the sniper among imperial doomsday weapons - it can destroy distant target with hyperspace-capable projectiles while staying in Byss system. Rammed by (reborn) Palpatine falgship Eclipse caused destruction of Byss and his final death
      - While not strictly doomsday device, Eclipse-class dreadnought and Sovereign-class were capable of rendering planets uninhabitable with their spinal weaponry (and if that's impossible, they can still perform Base Delta Zero order)

    Kremin timeship. Removes your entire species from having _ever existed._ (could use that against Skaro and no Daleks…)
    Species 8472 planet destroying single seat ships that cross the beams and kill a Borg planet.
    A bunch of supernova causing trilithium based compact warheads, from Soran's in Star Trek Generations to the Dominion one that a changeling jury rigged in a roundabout in DS9.
    Q Continuum flintlock rifles that cause novas in normal reality.
    Heck, biogenic weapons from any old ship could wipe out all life on a planet (Klingons - TNG The Chase).
    Red Matter from the reboot, otherwise known as "J.J. didn't do as much damage as he did to Star Wars".
    And from The Original Series there was the _Planet Killer,_ see if you can guess what it does? Free upvote to the first correct answer.

      To save you and some salty Whovians time, google Daleks and the "Time War". Daleks are no where near that strong now and they can no longer build the reality bomb because fixed point in time logic. However, they probably wouldn't get blindsided by a time travel event to the past and prevent from existence cliche as several of their 'everyday' enemies have basic time travel (Sontarans, Cybermen, The Doctor, etc). It's very circumstantial and honestly a toss up if the Kremin timeship would be successful like the Borg's attempt with Earth.

    Stargate also accidentally blew up a planet. Well, it was all the plan of the Ori. They wanted humans to try to destroy the gate with a Mark IX naquadah-enhanced nuke, but the blast ended up not only wiping out the planet but creating a black hole.
    And let’s not forget Carter causing a nova with a stargate and McKay accidentally destroying 9/10 of a star system. And McKay did blow up the Asuran homeworld.

    The troubled with picking a planet killer for 40K is that 'Exterminatus' is something of a catch all term. The guys at Generation Films picked single stage Cyclonic Torpedoes (a classic to be sure), but there are also two stage Cyclonic Torpedoes that are designed to penetrate the planet's core and blow the world apart entirely.
    Then there is the Life Eater virus that is a planetary scale bioweapon (but is rarely used in the current continuity since it feeds Nurgle's - the Chaos God of Plague's - power).
    There is the bloodtide; a self replicating nanite weapon.
    The Imperium is loath to use them, but there are also Warp tech planet killers, like planetary scale Vortex weapons, and psychic weapons that fry the minds of all sentient creatures on a planet without the Pariah Gene.
    And then of course there is good old fashioned massed orbital bombardment by the Imperial Navy and/or Astartes Strike Cruisers and Battle Barges, ongoing until the planet breaks apart, and this is far from a comprehensive list of Imperial planet killer tech. Species like the forces of Chaos, the Orks, the Tau, and especially the Necrons all have their own versions, and the Tyranids kill worlds on a galactic scale as a side effect of their feeding process.

    • @jlokison
      @jlokison 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Life Eater was usually followed by an atmosphere burner once it reached 90 to 100% propagation anyway.
      The Imperium of Humanity believes in recycling after all, so you need a way to cleanse a planet so its usable later.

    Always nice to see Stargate on a list, to maybe add some honorable mentions:
    The black hole supernova gate technic where you connect a gate to another gate next to a black hole, through the first gate into a sun, reduce it's mass, cause it to pseudo supernova taking the solar system with it.
    The alteran device. All versions of project arceturus with especial interest in the McKay Carter bridge connected version since it can easily destroy a reality by releasing massive amounts of particles which do not follow the local laws of nature at all.

The German series Raumpatrouille (Space Patrol) made parallel to and independent of Star Trek had the Overkill weapon. In the series itself we see the effect of just the first prototype blowing up a planetoid.
    Btw, the series may have been also the first to use a hyperspace collision to get rid of a planet-sized object (turned into a mini-sun) on collision course with Earth (send there by the hostile aliens referred to as Frogs).

Wolfe) - effectively, it used dark energy to temporarily cancel out gravity / create whitehole to destabilize stars and trigger them into nova/supernova. SImilar technique was improvised in Stargate SG-1 with stargate. This was Exterminatus on solar system scale! Still, more powerful bomb from series was Lexa Doig herself :D

    Figured I'd mention some I feel you missed:
    *Angel Halo* - Victory Gundam: A massive space station that is designed to scour the surface of the Earth and basically make use of the so called Newtypes to cause all intelligent life on the surface to regress to an infantile state while leaving infrastructure intact. It also carries a secret second weapon called Angel's Call, a set of microbes which would basically mutate humanity into nondescript black mass of matter.
    *Moonlight Butterfly* - Turn A Gundam: A weapon used by the Turn A and Turn X which releases a huge amount of nano-machines that would break down all technology caught in it into sand. At it's most powerful, it has a range that would extend all the way out to Jupiter. The one time it was used it basically knocked the human race back to the stone-age.
    And since you included the Infinity Gauntlet, I figure I'd include this one as well even though it technically isn't Sci-fi.
    *The Throne* - Shinza Bansho Series: A powerful device created in ancient times that would basically allow the user to rewrite the very laws of nature across the multiverse with it's use. While not destructive on it's own as most past users (known as Heavens) used it to recreate everything in their own image, Hajun made clear of the absurd destructive potential it carried. If he had successfully activated it and spread his new law, then all living beings, regardless of their scale and family relation, would spontaneously begin to kill each other. From humans, to animals and even insects. And it would all continue until only Hajun himself would be left.

    What about the Wormhole Weapon from Farscape? This thing was the size of a large cupboard and required as much power as an average FTL jump, and It ate up an entire star system in a matter of minutes via creating an unstable black hole

    You didn't mention the Arcturus project from Stargate Atlantis. Not exactly intended as a weapon, but once activated, it created explosion that destroyed five sixths of a solar system.

    The Crucible was built by Protheans but destroyed before they could use it against the Reapers, however its design and schematics were created in parts by several extinct galactic civilizations that lived and died by the hands of the Reapers throughout millions of years.
