The story is far more internally consistent than one would expect from it being someone's guided tour of their descent into madness. If Tetsuo were taking refuge in delusions and paranoia, the side plots we see where Tetsuo isn't directly involved would have gone very differently, but they support the main story of a psyker spiraling out of control. Some might argue this is the "unreliable narrator" approach and claim those side plots were simply what Tetsuo speculated was going on elsewhere, but I don't buy it: Tetsuo generally doesn't act like he knew what was going on in those other scenes, which conflicts with him imagining what others were saying and doing behind his back. You'd have to expand it to an "unreliable author" - and if you're assuming the _author_ is lying to you, then the whole story is just flailing nonsense. The idea that Tetsuo is simply reacting in self-defense to an uncaring world also doesn't really square with how he treats his friends once he realizes the power he has (or thinks he has) at his disposal: once he figures out he can pop people like meat balloons with his mind, he immediately becomes a terrifying bully in the film and a would-be warlord in the manga. All that said, I think the film does show an important psychological idea: that getting power before you're ready to handle it generally ends badly, and not just for that individual. Regardless of whether it's through carelessness, naivete, or simply not thinking things through, if you don't know what you're doing with power, it can blow up in your face and take everyone else in the blast radius with you.
I've always viewed tetsuo as an entitled and envious little brother of a king or crowned prince. Who, when given the chance will back stab his way to the top, which he then abuses the power and turns everyone against him. Kinda shared the benefits of being the boss and even went out of his way protect and rescue someone who really doesn't appreciate the privilege he never earned himself. Even in the end kineda had to reconcile with himself for making life too easy for tetsuo. At 10 I watched this and a couple years later I seen a few more times. This movie really imprinted a 'get it out of the mud' mindset. I quit team sports. Stayed with wrestling, muay thai and skateboarding. I did end up becoming a Marine. But it only worked out for me because everybody plays by the same rules and standards. I never let friends or family get their butts whooped but they better be ten toes down before I help them.
I've owned this film across different formats for decades of my life. I don't watch it often, but when I do... Still provoking and beautifully drawn and coloured
Totally agree. I've had this across VHS, Laserdisc, DVD, Blu-ray and 4K. And every time I watch it new depths are found. I would love to see the full manga adapted.
It's a very nice theory you got there, but it would only be applicable if Tetsuo was the only point of view character. And it is not the case in either the movie nor the comics... Therefore, I love the idea but it is not applicable to this story in the narrative sense :-)
Akira might have been the first movie I ever saw while tripping mushrooms. I had no idea what to expect, it was just an animated movie my friend said we were going to watch. I was holding on for dear life as Tetsuo started to go insane at the same time I was peaking. When his guts fell out on the road, I felt that shit.
The thing with analyzing art such as movies is that you must put yourself at the time that the story was written and not use contemporary settings as a base…as seemingly done here.
Are you aware that, because you're content is listed as "made for kids", subscribers can not recieve any alerts when you post new videos. Given your current view-count on this video ~3.5k vs subscribers 340k ... you might want to reconsider this decision. Its clearly impacting your numbers. This is not exactly a Paw Patrol video I think you'd be safe focusing on advertising to a slightly older audience.
Get this is an opinionated review, but i strongly disagree with some of the things said in this video, that not once is anything shown of sexual frustration, nor do I believe that it's about paranoia and descent into madness because of such , there are clear plot lines about the events that play out considering Akira ,and the government hence the outburst of power from Akira from government experimentation on him. In in all reality most of the perspective is from kaneda and friends, or government officials. To me Akira is much more a story of a boy finding out he has the power of a god and dealing with that. It's a coming of age story about a boy that's the runt of the group that's always wanted to be more and suddenly is and more. To me it seems as if this TH-camr subconsciously put more of himself in the video and strayed from the subject matter.
It came out on the big screen at the same time my crowd were experimenting with drugs and riding motorbikes. Which is the best way to experience for the first time … slowly melting into a cinema seat going _"Whoa!"_
Hey man, I really enjoyed this vid. Sometime around my third or fourth viewing of Akira, I actually started thinking about some of the things you explored here - though, to be honest, with much less scrutiny and depth as you have done. Anyway, I found this to be a thoroughly considered and frankly excellent reframing of the story in Akira. Admittedly, I had not previously considered looking at the narrative through the eyes of Tetsuo and his descent into madness rather than the more obvious, straight-forward interpretation of the events as seen by Kaneda, as he witnessed his best friend's mental deconstruction and eventual psychotic break. If nothing else, I think this means I need to watch the film yet again. Not a big deal though as Akira is one of those films that rewards multiple viewings with elements often missed on a first or even second watch.
Not for nothing, but props for your pronunciation of Akira. Most people insist on saying it in the same way white people order items at a sushi restaurant: that is, by emphasizing the middle syllable (i.e. "uh-KEER-uh").
Ik this is a year later but I see a lot of ppl disagreeing w u as is their right and I don’t entirely agree either but this movie to me is truly a work of art and art is subjective. I feel the author wrote this to have these varying types of meanings and perspectives and that not any single one is right or wrong but rather a version of what u personally developed thru nature and nurture urself. I def agree that mental illness seems to be a huge part and I love ur interpretation on the movie although as u said at the beginning there is so much more to it. In the end I would say though that it is instead a cumulation of the different aspects of society the movie looks that rlly makes the movie so great. It is the ability to argue debate and create ur own ideas on the movie that make it such a masterpiece.
Small note: the English dubbed version has differences in dialogue with the Original Japanese with subtitles - and a Japanese speaker sitting next to me giving me notes.
Ya know, the idea of Shima Tatsuo having a psychotic break after undergoing a debilitating physical (and psychological) trauma has some merit. The search for Akira as a means to obtain external culpability for his actions, the death of Gouri[sic] an aspect of guilt for leaving her behind, his interactions with Kaneda and The Colonel as debates between his id, super ego and ego, it has merit. It could also explain quite a lot of the madness that occurs during the Manga. (I should note, I haven't finished the Manga yet. It's on my bucket list.)
I stopped when he said that all the stuff happens after Tetsuo crashes his bike, but before that they are trying to get the lil guy and he destroys a building with his psychic powers (Sorry I forgot all the names, it’s been to long)
Focusing on a Tetsuo Dream Theory misses the entire metaphysical and philosophical focus of Akira. The story was a trendsetter for its time and still does Cyberpunk storytelling and concepts brilliantly well. I think this is a fine forum theory though its presentation is a little insulting.
ufff so in real life your cellphone cant be tracked and jeffrey epstein actually killed himself? lmao what a crappy analysis... your in for a huge dose of humblingness.... kek gl
Tetsuos psychology is an interesting topic but no it's no Shutter Island. This whole video begs the question, did you read the manga? Lots of things happen when he is not around, and parts of the story are told from other perspectives. It's not nosensical, wacky... whatever, Akira takes place in a world where Buddhism is the true metaphysical reality, it's not random nonsense. You seem to just need to vent about how you think people handled covid lockdowns, fair enough, but it doesn't have anything to do with Akira.
If you liked Akira, why would you be here, check out the 1998 anime film Spriggan. Its not as deep but very similar from the same director. There is a recently released Netflix series but not as good.
I enjoyed your video, but strongly disagree with your analysis. The events were real in the story, and serves as a caution to the dangers of the military industrial complex and scientific progress without caution. Like the atomic bomb, and the Manhattan project. Which was a collaboration between government and top scientists, and also done in secret. Akria is a metaphor for atomic warfare and presented in an abstract way with a sci-fi horror film. Mental illness is a theme though too, Kanadea and Tetsuo are both abandoned children and disillusioned with the world they live in. One can cope with it and the other can’t, and the one who can’t cope becomes the weapon to bring down the system that hurt them both so much. He’s a Frankenstein’s monster in a way.
Ngl, this is a lot of projection from the youtubers perspective, the topic of mental illness of a struggling adolescent in a chaotic world is far less interesting than the actual themes thats being pushed by the story itself. Good clickbait tho.

You have a mean freind lol. 😂 Akira is tough enough to watch sober. 🤣🤣

Where is the part where we've been misunderstanding Akira? These are just obvious themes from the film.
I rarely downvote anything but this is just pedantic filler masquerading as "deep." Very frustrating to listen to.

100% agree
Although Akira 1988 is a great movie, I recommend everyone to read the original manga. It's even better.
Thank you
Just in time for Magneto to kick his butt next week in DeathBattle
Tetsuo woke up in hospital after his bike crash… it had all been a horrible dream.
This is my head cannon 😊

Excellent video Ben, as always
*Ben shows his face
Me: “Look how they massacred my boy.”
The little green kid from the begining shows that the supernatural was there and those endowed where indeed kidnapped.
Tetsuo also drapes himself in red. A hero color in Japan.
Nice.u made me look at this in different way and I have to say u made it better. U done well. Thanks.

The only thing I got from the movie was that ultimate power ultimately corrupts and destroys you in the end

I've been watching this movie for over 30 years on VHS I'm not misunderstanding it
Suffer is Pleasure, Heaven is soon
It's Tetsuo's story and Akira just lives in it
But Akira isn't about that at all. It's about Japan and nukes.
please make an analysis and explain video about vladilena milize from 86

Shouldnt this be on the Ochi channel and are you going to do Steamboy next
El Benito, while I loved this video… WHERE IS THE MANDATORY 40K NEW CONTENT?😂
I remember watching this movie. I was at an age when I probably should not have been watching it.
Which may explain why I so messed up now 😐
I think that applies to most of us lol
Hotl take premise.
I was looking for an explanation of Akira and I got a Biden support that believes the moon landing happened. What a bummer.

Wrong.
19 minutes of pure babling and soup letters.
Had to stop watching this..... Couldn't handle how he pronounced "Akira". I'm an old man. I have never heard it said that way.....
I just saw your video on Spider-Man No way home and I agree with you because it makes him look interlay stupid.
Terrible movie.
