    Superman is a great study in what influences us to be who we are. He was raised by a good family, who taught him to use his power justly. By the way he choses his secret identity, he sees humanity as weak, bumbling beings; yet he sees himself not as someone to dominate over them, but as their protector. It's a study in the question of, does power truly corrupt us; or is it our own level of corruption that influences that power? Batman could be killing criminals left and right. Being he had his parents killed in front of him, he could have turned that way. Because of how he was influenced, first by them, then by Alfred, he chose to act not as judge and executioner, but as a glorified detective with the superpower of lots of money. He catches criminals, but only after he has the evidence of their corruption.
    Homelander was just raised in a lab. He never had that moral compass of an ever-present family to guide him. His true father was just some supe who jerked off in a test tube. The way he sees the world is just through a superior being with no moral compass, which is more like a predator over its prey.

      Superman doesn't see humans as weak or bumbling, he sees them as humans. The way he sees humans is the way a powerlifter might see a normal guy, or a literal genius sees the rest of humanity, maybe they don't have the same skills and strengths, but they have their own value separate from their own. He protects them because he has skills and powers that no human has, not because he thinks he's stronger and smarter. It's no different than a smart person becoming a doctor because it's a good use for their abilities.

      Superman does NOT see humans as weak bumbling beings. He protects humanity because in his heart, he is a human. He's just a dude with powers who wants to help. A man who represents the best values of human decency, hence the name superman. Him choosing to keep his identity secret has nothing to do with some underline superiority complex. Its just the classic "hero wants to have a normal life too"

  • @iancorder6133
    @iancorder6133 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Nah, people should not have to suffer a narcissist like him, no matter the benefits he brings. If he causes that much chaos while defending humanity when there isn’t a threat that requires his presence then you have to ask whether or not he’s needed. There are other heroes that could do his job. The chaos he brings is too much a price to pay for his “protection”. There are better ways to act even if he wanted to rule over humanity. Even if the world treats you bad, it’s on you to not react and change to that. You have to be better because you choose to be, not because you were raised into it. And it’s not that hard to know what to do if you take a good year to look at what is good and what is not. He’s had like what, at least his whole life?

    Honestly the most evil bastard, just a great character. haven't seen the show yet just going on the comic. The best thing about him in the comics is that he is entirely manufactured to be the perfect product of Vought from his manufactured Superman origin story all the way up to the Huey timeline. I have no idea if they included the whole September 11 plot line in the show either way the way the comic spears both political ideology and celebrity worship was very gripping. It did fall apart in the end and the less said about Highland Laddie the better.

      Butcher is only "right" because there is the difference between humans and supes in capabilities; but his argument is flawed in that hes basically wishing the destruction of those with both the will AND ability to be more than ordinary, which applies equally as it would with human to human interactions. like saying the only thing stopping you from killing someone you abhor, is a lack of the ability to do so. The Supes are inherently "good" because they have the ability to be worse, but not the will or inclination to be worse.

    Butcher and Homelander are opposite sides of the same coin. Both thinking little of the other side cause of the trauma they suffered. Maybe that's homelands endgame. He knows the only way to bring everyone together is by "scorching the earth". He and butchers final battle being the thing that brings both sides together.

    Whether it's good on balance to do the right thing for the wrong reasons is a reasonable question to ask, but it's one that centuries of history, warfare, and philosophical debate have given a fairly consistent answer of "no". Adopting a "might makes right" outlook instead leads directly to untermensch being enslaved to pick cotton or build pyramids.
    More practically, I would rather take my chances without someone like Homelander, because while powerful, he isn't _reliable._ I mean, in the aliens-invade scenario, what makes us sure he wouldn't see _them_ as the more-evolved beings? After all, if they're an existential threat to normal humanity, but his superpowers allow him to hold his own, then wouldn't that philosophy of "survival of the fittest" mean there's a good chance he might side with the aliens over humanity?
    Machiavelli covered this about 500 years ago. ...Well, not Homelander specifically, but in _The Prince_ when he discussed how mercenaries are dangerous to their employer. His view was that mercenaries _might_ be decent enough on the battlefield, but 1) there's no guarantee of that, 2) they make too many of their own rules to be reliable anyway, and 3) their only loyalty is to their paychecks, not to you as a leader or even to your country in general. If they decide they don't feel like fighting a critical battle (or if someone else outbids you and the mercs turn on you), then that's pretty much Game Over. Relying on mercenaries is an incredibly risky plan for no real benefit beyond what you could do by raising your own forces.
    WRT Homelander, he's a sociopathic narcissist. An extraordinarily powerful individual, but about as reliable as a wild animal. If he can't be relied on to perform, then he is not fit for purpose as a defender. He still has value as a person, of course, and everyone in the show seems to be doing their level best to push him into embracing his worst tendencies, so there is a hefty element of tragedy to him. It's just, his philosphy is flawed and his capricious nature makes him unreliable as a lynchpin of mankind's defense.

    You cannot make the argument that Homelander is anything but a monster and horrible person, or that he would be a good or even partially worthwhile defender, without completely ignoring all those murders that he's committed (and it's a lot) or the fact that every single time he tries to save people, somebody dies, and it's pretty much always civilians because he has no interest or concern whatsoever for collateral damage. Also, he's only a caring father in any regard or at any time because he sees Ryan as essentially an extension to himself. If he believed that Ryan was lost to him and would never be willing to see him as his father or be his legacy again, he wouldn't care about him at all. Sure, he'd be sad, but not because he can't spend time with his son, but rather because that would be the equivalent of losing his legacy.

    Homelander, if he is so superior to us that he is essentially a different species is quite sad for him. We are just smart enough to understand life is meaningless and violent, imagine how painful it would be for a being that has the power to best every obstacle and hindrance that stop us, yet is stuck in this valley of tears. We are natural beings, we know we have a primordial purpose: being hunter gatherers in the grassland. We are biologically programmed for this task and many of our caracteristics are adapted to that purpose. Imagine being a superior being that met its creator and knew his purpose from birth and is far too sophisticated for this crude task.

    I've not seen the latest season, yet. (Ironically, I've been touring the US on an extended vacation).
    However, I believe this one has been overthought.
    Superheroes are a product of their generation and Homelander is in a long line of anti-heroes that have spawned over that period.
    One of the real differences here is that The Boys is toying with the differences between gen y and z and, in fact, everything that came before them.
    There's a point; I forget the exact episode, where it was obvious Homelander (gen Y) was going to be eclipsed by the gen z newcomers and we know how that went down.
    Furthermore, the series dropped the idealistic view of superheroes and simply asked the question, "If superheroes were assholes too, what would happen?"
    Obviously, when the facade dropped, hell broke loose and I'm really hoping S3 lives up to the expectations I have, let alone the hype 😁

  • @whodatboi2567
    @whodatboi2567 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Regarding your last question, I would personally get rid of Homelander. The main reason being that he represents and excessive force that is not really needed in the world of The Boys. If anything, having all supes on fairly equal footing would represent a better system as no one hero could muck things up on their own and thus would have an element of fear for their lives and livelihood that would allow them to be more humane.

    The point of humanity being superior is not being the best in dominating others. Humanity being superior means having higher moral and ethical sense and using the resources at our disposal to help the others around us reach the best version of themselves.
